In this episode Brian does the unthinkable and finally picks the Original 1977 "Suspiria". This Italian horror classic has been on the list for an episode since the FM3 started this podcast many many moons and meatballs ago. After last week's episode "Inferno" which is the second of the 3 Mother's Trilogy by Argento, Brian needed to go back and start at the top with what is his personal favorite Italian horror film. There are so many reasons why this one floats to the tippy top of the heap of mediocre Italian horror and if you have not seen it yet, you are truly missing out. Argento is a master and nobody's movies look like early Argento horror. Brian, Jef and Josh were really happy to just watch a few decent movies after a long list of duds. It's a Nice! But do not fret dear listeners, Josh's pick is coming soon and the guys will be right back on the Charles BAND wagon! So enjoy it for now!
Eliminators (1986) Director: Peter Manoogast Cast: Andrew Prine, Denise Crosby, Patrick Reynolds, Roy DotriceRobots. Cavemen. A ninja who shows up two-thirds of the way through for absolutely no reason. A mandroid who can't stay on a boat. This is Eliminators, and it is exactly the fever dream you're hoping it is.This week, John and Sean dive headfirst into the 1986 Charles Band-produced sci-fi action romp that somehow got a PG rating despite side boob, constant explosions, and a villain who gets yeeted 100,000 years into the past by a random keyboard punch. It's stupid. It's charming. It almost works. We love it.In this episode, we discuss:"Bubblegum, Paperclips, and Tank Treads" — The plot holds together by vibes alone, and that's somehow fine. The mandroid falls off the back of a boat mid-river, John rewinds it twice, and we break down why this movie's relentless, logic-free momentum is actually its greatest asset."The Sandbox Theory of Screenwriting" — Robots, time travel, Neanderthals, a ninja who materializes from the woods two-thirds in — John's thesis is that this script was written by handing kids a box of action figures and transcribing the chaos. We make the case for why that works here when it absolutely shouldn't."The Mandroid Disguise Industrial Complex" — A fedora, a tarp-cape, and a giant red flashlight bolted to his head. Incognito. We also settle the tank tread debate: hyped in the trailer, used for five minutes, abandoned, brought back only to fall over. A true cinematic crime."PG? Are You Sure About That?" — Wet T-shirts, a bar brawl led by someone named Bayou Betty, laser violence, side boob. Apparently all fine in 1986. We dig into what the ratings board was and wasn't paying attention to, and what it says about this gloriously unhinged era of filmmaking. We Also Talked About:Mr. Inbetween (Hulu) — An FX series Sean fell hard for: 26 half-hour episodes about an Australian hitman balancing contract kills with single parenthood. Dark, funny, completely addictive. The Magician (2005) (Tubi) — The Scott Ryan mockumentary that originated the Ray Shoesmith character before Mr. Inbetween existed. Essential context.WWE Biographies: Legends (Amazon) – The Von Erichs — Three hours of documented tragedy covering the same ground as The Iron Claw but with more Kevin, more Sportatorium, and more time to sit in the sadness. Sean watched it. He reports back.Video Vixen (Bloodstream) — A shot-on-video indie slasher streaming on Bloodstream (free, but they want your email, which John resents) about a cam girl with a snuff fetish that eventually stops being a fetish and just becomes murder. The most interesting thing about it is the intentionally chaotic camera work — 1080p to vertical phone shot to Super 8 grain, switching based on which influencer is on screen. Cool concept, largely forgettable execution. John supports it on principle because indie filmmakers need somewhere to put their stuff, but he's not going to pretend it's good.King Kong (1976) (Pluto) — John revisited the Jeff Bridges-and-Jessica-Lange remake. Practical effects, a worthy successor to the original, and a soft spot for a giant ape that never fully goes away.SNL on Peacock — John went back to episode one and kept going. What he found: a legitimately fascinating variety show buried under 40 minutes of content per 90-minute slot, missing skits, and enough '90s-era comedy choices to keep a content moderation team busy for years. Some of the above links are affiliate links — if you purchase through them we get a small kickback, and it's the best way to support the show.New episodes of the Dewey Pod Monster podcast drop every week. They told me. I listened but never internalized it. Saturdays at Texas Frightmare Weekend are a madhouse. You can't fart and someone be unable to recognize what you've had for breakfast. The line to ride the ESCALATOR winds around like at Six Flags (The escalator actually broke halfway through the day.)Naturally, this day was the most packed. I and my producer/cameraman/best friend Dakota traversed like sardines through vendors, met Steve-O of JACKASS fame (who signs ass cheeks and regales curious onlookers with tales of his fake tooth that's removable at will) and checked out some decked-out hearses.Once the sun set, the convention kicked into high gear. First, the world premiere of Full Moon Features' MODELS VS. WEREWOLVES (AI slop). The movie wasted no time in contextualizing producer Charles Band's claim that Full Moon would release 10 films in 2026. How? AI. AI slathered on the screen like dirty Vaseline. There's no visual language developed, no direction, just the vomiting of pre-existing assets. I'd even grant it the moniker of 'collage' if I believed the placement of said elements extended beyond a Copy-Paste prompt.Operating as a salve to MODELS VS WEREWOLVES was the Fake Horror Trailer Showcase, presented by "Bloody" Bill Pon and Kelley Wilson (CIRCUS OF THE DEAD 1 & 2). Here is where anyone, of any skill level or experience, can submit a trailer for a fake horror movie. It flexes creative muscles and made for a riotous celebration of scrappy independence. Mixed in with the fake trailers were real trailers for GOLDILOCKS (twisted fairytale masked slasher)---Texas Frightmare Weekend's websiteFollow The Movies on Instagram & LetterboxdThrow a couple dollars in the tip jar!

In this episode, I chat with creature effects artist, puppeteer and digital pioneer Craig Caton-Largent about a career that arguably traces the entire arc of modern visual effects — from foam latex and animatronics to motion control, performance capture and full CG animation. Craig talks about growing up on a sheep and cattle ranch in Washington State, being captivated by the 1960s Batman TV show and then Planet of the Apes, and teaching himself prosthetics from Dick Smith's Monster Makeup Handbook. After tracking down Dick Smith's address in Who's Who in America, he wrote a letter that led to a year of mentorship over cassette tapes and ultimately introductions to Rick Baker, Stan Winston and Tom Burman. We get into his first job on Charles Band's Metal Storm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn, working on the Olympic alien for the 1984 closing ceremonies, sculpting barnacles on Cocoon, building Spock's seamless silicone ears on Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, undulating menacingly under shaving cream on Larry Cohen's The Stuff, and puppeteering Slimer's mouth on the original Ghostbusters. A big part of the conversation focuses on Jurassic Park, including the design evolution of the T-Rex, the helicopter convention moment that led to the McFadden motion base, the logistics of moving the full-size animatronic across the San Fernando Valley at night, and Craig's work as the Raptor puppeteer, including the now-legendary "head tilt" at the kitchen window that earned an on-set "It's like Alien, I love it" from Spielberg. We also talk about Craig's twenty-year stint as the caretaker, or "doctor", to the original ET puppet, including the time the LAPD turned up at his garage door thinking he was running a crack lab while he was actually repainting ET. Plus the story of how Stan Winston handing him a couple of SGI machines led, almost overnight, to him becoming one of the eight co-founders of Digital Domain alongside James Cameron and Scott Ross. Later in the conversation we move into Craig's animation career as a final layout artist and character TD at DreamWorks and Disney, with credits on Tangled, Rise of the Guardians, How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Turbo, and stories from working with Guillermo del Toro at DreamWorks. We finish on Craig's current role as Creative Director of the 3D Animation and Visual Effects department at the New York Film Academy in Burbank. Re-Animator (1985) was chosen by new show supporter Rhys — and what a debut pick it is. Directed by Stuart Gordon in his feature film debut, the movie became one of the defining cult horror films of the 1980s. Based loosely on H.P. Lovecraft's serialized story Herbert West–Reanimator, Gordon initially envisioned it as a stage play and later as a television series before realizing it would work best as a feature film. Shot on a modest budget of around $900,000, the production was backed by Charles Band's Empire Pictures, a studio known for embracing the stranger side of horror and science fiction. The creative team leaned into excess and black comedy, pushing the boundaries of gore and taste in a way that both shocked and delighted audiences.Filming took place over 18 days in Los Angeles, with Gordon assembling a cast of relatively unknown actors — including Jeffrey Combs, Bruce Abbott, and Barbara Crampton — who would go on to become icons of cult horror cinema. The movie's practical effects team, led by John Naulin, worked wonders with limited resources, creating gruesome yet inventive visuals that defined the film's enduring reputation. Upon release, Re-Animator was met with controversy and acclaim in equal measure, with critics alternately praising its audacity and condemning its extremity. Despite its low budget and NC-17-level violence, the film became a sleeper hit and helped launch a wave of splatter comedies that blended horror, humor, and outrageous imagination — ensuring Re-Animator a permanent place in cult movie history. If you enjoy the show, we have a Patreon, so become a supporter here.Referral links also help out the show if you were going to sign up:NordVPNNordPassTrailer Guy Plot Summary.Fun FactsThe green reagent serum used in the movie was made from fluorescent green glow stick liquid mixed with food coloring, giving it that unforgettable neon look.Director Stuart Gordon claimed he was inspired to make the film after watching Frankenstein with his wife and wondering what a modern, more extreme version would look like.Jeffrey Combs' portrayal of Herbert West became so iconic that he went on to play the character again in two sequels — Bride of Re-Animator (1989) and Beyond Re-Animator (2003).The film's most infamous scene was so shocking that it caused walkouts at its first festival screening — and immediate cult status among those who stayed. To achieve the movie's outrageous gore effects, the production used over 24 gallons of fake blood, much of it homemade from corn syrup and food dye.Barbara Crampton later revealed that she was hesitant to take on her role due to the film's extreme content, but she has since embraced its legacy in horror history. The film's composer, Richard Band, intentionally modeled the score after Bernard Herrmann's music for Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960) — a choice that added a darkly playful tone. The severed head effects were created using a combination of latex prosthetics and reverse photography, which gave the film's shocking visuals their uncanny realism.Re-Animator was banned or heavily censored in several countries, including Germany, Singapore, and Australia, due to its extreme violence and sexual content. The movie's success helped revive interest in H.P. Lovecraft adaptations, paving the way for later films like From Beyond (1986), The Resurrected (1991), and Dagon (2001).thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

In this episode it was Josh's turn to pick a movie for the guys to watch and chat about. He got so excited that he completely forgot about the ban on Charles Band movies that the FM3 made a blood oath on just mere episodes ago. But instead of choosing something else Brian, Jef and Josh dive dick first into the deep dark dumpster that holds The Charles Band Archives and resurfaced with "The Dungeonmaster" from 1984. Listeners you too can play at home in the Chuck Band Dumpster and watch Richard Moll and the Fondacaro brothers get horribly underused and at the same time see some of John Carl Buechler's Troll and Ghoulies puppet rejects, and really what more could you ask from a "horror" movie?

It's a "lost" film starring Tony Todd that Charles Band has "graciously" dug up and finished in the wake of the actor's recent passing. We'll also meet Slinky, the two-hearted cat, the dreaded Weas-odile, and Two-Head the guy with two heads (surprise!)Please rate, review, and tell your fiends. This week, it's Charles Band's 1989 PUPPET MASTER, the dawn of a franchise that helped build Full Moon Features. With this being the first entry, our batch of antiheroes is relatively small, but they're still devious, murderous, and resourceful as hell. Join us as we watch them dispatch of a group of questionable characters spending the night at an oceanside hotel. The William Hickey cameo alone makes this one worthwhile.
Horror Weekly Episode #326 We've got some classics and not-so-classics this week from Charles Band and Full Moon Entertainment. We'll then fast-forward a bit and watch the very odd “Meridian: Kiss of the Beast” from 1990, and then the very recent “City of Demons” from 2025. The latest issue of “Horror Monthly” is now on sale! The year of the stitch up has had a couple of misfires for Dave's picks, with Chris unfortunately declaring Cloud City's for both sword and sorcery adventures - Gor and The Barbarians. So this is the time to roll out the cult classic sci-fi movie from 1984, Trancers.Trancers was a low-budget sci-fi film produced by Charles Band's Empire Pictures, a company known for its B-movie output during the 1980s. Directed by Charles Band and written by Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo, the film was conceived as a time-traveling noir with a futuristic twist, inspired by Blade Runner and classic detective stories. The production had limited financial resources, so the filmmakers cleverly set much of the movie in present-day Los Angeles rather than the distant future, allowing them to save on costly futuristic sets and effects. The film starred Tim Thomerson as the grizzled, time-traveling cop Jack Deth and a young Helen Hunt in one of her early roles. Despite its modest budget, Trancers managed to craft a unique cyberpunk atmosphere using creative cinematography and neon-lit cityscapes.Empire Pictures, known for churning out cult classics, ensured the movie had a quick and efficient production, utilizing familiar locations and a mix of practical effects to bring its sci-fi elements to life. The film's pulpy, hard-boiled dialogue and time-travel premise helped it stand out in the crowded landscape of low-budget sci-fi, leading to a small but dedicated cult following. Trancers performed well enough on the home video market to spawn multiple sequels, solidifying its place in the annals of ‘80s cult cinema. The movie's mix of noir and sci-fi influences, along with Thomerson's performance, kept it alive long after its initial release, proving that even a low-budget indie film could leave a lasting impact on the genre. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where the future is on the brink of collapse, one man must travel back in time to stop an unstoppable evil. Jack Deth is a hard-nosed cop on the hunt for Martin Whistler, a madman who turns people into mindless, murderous Trancers. But when Whistler escapes to 1985, Deth is forced to follow, leaping into the body of his own ancestor. With the help of a fiery young woman, Leena, he'll have to fight his way through an army of mind-controlled killers, stop Whistler, and save the future… before time runs out!thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback
Full Moon Entertainment and comic book films are two subjects that fit together like a round peg in a square hole. After all, Full Moon was known for schlocky horror properties like the killer doll series Puppet Master, the vampire series Subspecies, and many others. So why the hell would studio head Charles Band try taking on the Marvel property Doctor Strange only to switch gears (and the name) in the midst of production. And the main question, was this ever intended to be Doctor Strange to begin with? Dig in with Matt, Adam, and Garrett as they review one of the Three Men and a Retrospective Podcast's most bizarre ‘Marvel' entries, the 1992 Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator) starring film Doctor Mordrid.
.Talking Trash is a show to discuss movies that some people deem to be garbage, mediocre or just one that people never knew existed, we talk through the plot in spoiler fashion while asking "is this a bad movie?" And if not "what is the worst movie ever made?"It's February, which means we are doing friends and listener suggestions. This month we are checking out 4 suggested by a friend we've made on our journey's. This week we watch another Charles Band film, but hey, its from the 80s, so there's hope. In the early 90s, "HOME ALONE rip-off" was a legit genre, and there's no way Charles Band was going to let a zeitgeist go unexploited. This week we're talking about the 1993 Moonbeam romp REMOTE, where a resourceful young kid and his remote control toys take on a trio of bumbling burglars. We're joined this week by one half of Video Villa Entertainment, Logan, who helps us explore this odd little subgenre of 90's nostalgia. It's that time of year again, the time that our faithful heroes Jef, Josh and Brian put their lives on the line to celebrate "GNARVEMBER"! The time of year to choose a film that fully emcompasses both hard rock and horror! This time around the FM3 find themselves elbow deep once again in a Full Moon Production, Produced by good old Chuck band and directed by his accomplice Ted Nicolaou. On paper this movie screams "GNARVEMBER", however in execution there might be some debate as to how much this movie actually shreds. Do yourself a favor, hit play and get ready for a spirited chat about this year's hard rock hullabaloo 1992's "Bad Channels"!
