Courtney Joyner and starring the one and only Tim Thomerson, and co-starring Megan Ward, Helen Hunt, Melanie Smith, Stephen Macht, Andrew Robinson, Telma Hopkins, R.A. This week, it's Charles Band's 1989 PUPPET MASTER, the dawn of a franchise that helped build Full Moon Features. With this being the first entry, our batch of antiheroes is relatively small, but they're still devious, murderous, and resourceful as hell. The year of the stitch up has had a couple of misfires for Dave's picks, with Chris unfortunately declaring Cloud City's for both sword and sorcery adventures - Gor and The Barbarians. So this is the time to roll out the cult classic sci-fi movie from 1984, Trancers.Trancers was a low-budget sci-fi film produced by Charles Band's Empire Pictures, a company known for its B-movie output during the 1980s. Directed by Charles Band and written by Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo, the film was conceived as a time-traveling noir with a futuristic twist, inspired by Blade Runner and classic detective stories. The production had limited financial resources, so the filmmakers cleverly set much of the movie in present-day Los Angeles rather than the distant future, allowing them to save on costly futuristic sets and effects. The film starred Tim Thomerson as the grizzled, time-traveling cop Jack Deth and a young Helen Hunt in one of her early roles. Despite its modest budget, Trancers managed to craft a unique cyberpunk atmosphere using creative cinematography and neon-lit cityscapes.Empire Pictures, known for churning out cult classics, ensured the movie had a quick and efficient production, utilizing familiar locations and a mix of practical effects to bring its sci-fi elements to life. The film's pulpy, hard-boiled dialogue and time-travel premise helped it stand out in the crowded landscape of low-budget sci-fi, leading to a small but dedicated cult following. Trancers performed well enough on the home video market to spawn multiple sequels, solidifying its place in the annals of ‘80s cult cinema. The movie's mix of noir and sci-fi influences, along with Thomerson's performance, kept it alive long after its initial release, proving that even a low-budget indie film could leave a lasting impact on the genre. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where the future is on the brink of collapse, one man must travel back in time to stop an unstoppable evil. Jack Deth is a hard-nosed cop on the hunt for Martin Whistler, a madman who turns people into mindless, murderous Trancers. But when Whistler escapes to 1985, Deth is forced to follow, leaping into the body of his own ancestor. With the help of a fiery young woman, Leena, he'll have to fight his way through an army of mind-controlled killers, stop Whistler, and save the future… before time runs out!thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

While Yuzna was keen to do a direct sequel to Re-Animator (which he would later direct himself), Gordon and the rest of the team wanted to do an original story, piggy-backing off what they had previously learned and delivering something fresh and new. Unfortunately, despite a sizeable investment from producer Charles Band, the film failed to recoup it's $4.5M budget, largely due to the fact that in addition to tepid market, the film failed to receive an R rating from the MPAA, who insisted on labeling it NC-17 and thus drastically lowering its distribution potential. Thankfully, the film became notorious on the VHS Video Nasties circuit, and later in 2013, the film received it's much needed restoration, restoring it to it's full run-time by adding every available scene that had been cut (sadly, there are still some sequences that were lost to the annals of time). Join Jason Peters and Ryan Seybold as they analyze what makes this movie such a fun, slimy, gory classic of mid-80's body horror filmmaking, right here on Esoterica Cinema.

Starring Gary Graham and Anne-Marie Johnson as the brave robot jockeys and Paul Koslo as their ruthless enemy, Robot Jox could be the brightest and breeziest dystopian action movie ever made. It was also one of the most ambitious film Charles Band's mini-major studio ever attempted, and may have precipitated the fall of his Empire! But does it live up to our childhood memories? Or is it as cringe-inducing as a fondly remembered Saturday morning cartoon? Find out! Follow us on Tiktok, Facebook and Instagram. Welcome to another episode of The Video Store Podcast. Are you ready for some recommendations? This week, I am focusing on films that are perfect for anyone looking for some Dungeons & Dragons inspiration. I have got four fantastic picks: "Hawk the Slayer" (1980), "Dragonslayer" (1981), "The Sword and the Sorcerer" (1982), and "The Dungeonmaster" (1984).First up is "Hawk the Slayer." This 1980 fantasy film directed by Terry Marcel is a great watch for those who enjoy classic sword and sorcery adventures. The story follows Hawk, played by John Terry, on his quest to defeat the evil Voltan, portrayed by Jack Palance. The film stands out for its creative use of special effects, particularly for its time. It's a cult favorite and a prime example of low-budget fantasy done right. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support our work.Next, we have "Dragonslayer" from 1981. Directed by Matthew Robbins, this movie features groundbreaking special effects that earned it an Academy Award nomination. The story revolves around a young sorcerer's apprentice, played by Peter MacNicol, who sets out to slay a dragon. The dragon, Vermithrax Pejorative, remains one of the most impressive and realistic dragons ever put to film. The combination of practical effects and CGI was ahead of its time, and it's one of my favorite fantasy movies."The Sword and the Sorcerer," released in 1982 and directed by Albert Pyun, is another gem. Lee Horsley stars as Talon, a mercenary with an AMAZING three-bladed sword on a mission to rescue a princess and reclaim his kingdom. This film has some action-packed sequences and impressive low-budget practical effects. Lastly, we have "The Dungeonmaster" from 1984. Directed by several directors, including Charles Band and Dave Allen, this anthology-style film follows Paul, a computer programmer who must face various challenges set by the evil Mestema, played by Richard Moll. The film's blend of fantasy and sci-fi elements makes it unique. Each segment of Paul's journey showcases different styles and imaginative scenarios that keeps it fresh. These four films offer a great mix of fantasy adventure, imaginative storytelling, and unique special effects. They're perfect for anyone looking to get inspired for their next Dungeons & Dragons campaign. So, grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy these classic fantasy films. Then go roll some dice.Subscribe to the Video Store Podcast* The Video Store Podcast* Apple Podcast* RSS This is a public episode. Last year we accompanied our Doug Jones Day episode with a review of the cult classic SPOOKIES, featuring an ensemble of characters under siege from an evil sorcerer and his peculiar assortment of supernatural minions. This year we're following a similar pattern, but swapping out the Jay Estate in New York for Castello Di Giove in Italy, a locale that will be familiar to fans of the movies of Charles Band and Empire International Pictures. For our latest episode we're reviewing SPELLCASTER (filmed in 1988, but not released until 1992) from director Rafal Zielinski, featuring Adam Ant, Bunty Baily and KROQ-FM's own Richard Blade. We do start the episode with a bit of sad talk about recent life events for our hosts, but we had a tremendously fun time discussing the movie afterwards and we hope everyone enjoys the episode. If you want to skip over the sad bits, the movie discussion begins around the 13:30 mark. As of this release, the movie is free to stream on both Tubi and the Youtube channel for Full Moon Pictures, and absolutely recommend checking out the movie before listening to this review. And also be sure to see SPOOKIES if you haven't already, as it comes up a LOT in this review and is becoming an oddly integral movie for our pod. Getting any film finished and released is truly a minor miracle. There are so many stages of film production where projects fall apart. From financiers backing out at the last minute to a star quitting 2 days before production is set to begin. Most films take approximately 3 years from inception to completion when they do survive the Squid Games like survival test of getting a movie done. Our guest take has just completed his 400th film. To put it plainly, he's unstoppable. The Godfather of B movies, the Puppet Master and a true master at reinventing himself time and time again… in this episode we welcome one of Spill your guts favourite guests, Charles Band. Now, Charlie has created a new line of films titled Pulp Noire and with it, Charlie is setting out to show fans a whole new side to Full Moon films. Surrealistic, trippy, raw, and bleak… and nary a diminutive creature in sight. This new line shows Charlie reinventing YET again. The first film in the series is titled “Quadrant” and is directed by Charlie himself (all the Pulp Noire films will be directed by Charlie who generally prefers to take the producing helm) . It's a typically crazy Full Moon film that involves virtual reality, monsters and Jack the Ripper. Just see it. I can't even begin to describe this gonzo head trip.Quadrant releases on nearly all platforms as well as being available from fullmoonhorror.com on August 23Charlie sat down with me to discuss the response to the recently released David Allen masterpiece “The Primevals”, to talk about the inception of Pulp Noire and why he chose to direct all the films himself and also to share his greatest fear. Which I'm sure you'll find is so very Charles Band appropriate.Let's strap on our VR helmets and be weary of the ripper as Spill your guts welcomes back the one and only Charles Band! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
