Ordinally Recorded on Wednesday March 5th and Sunday April 13th, 2025 Hey there, fans! That Horror Show Podcast brings you the second part of their Coffin Joe retrospective. Lovable show hosts Timothy Kazda and Chris Koenig continue further into the Coffin Joe lore conceived by Brazilian director Jose Mojica Marins, and the two films they review are so wild, so bizzare and so downright absurd they can't wait to tell you about them! First up is "The Bloody Exorcism of Coffin Joe" (1974), which features director Jose Mojica Marins playing himself battling against his cinematic alter ego, WWExorcist-style! After that it's "The Strange Hostel of Naked Pleasures" (1976) as Coffin Joe portrays the ultimate embodiment of evil: a manager who stands behind a desk and welcomes clueless patrons into his nondescript hostel! Hey, Eli Roth it isn't, but so what? And lest we not forget, Nate from 'Kids Corner' jumps in to give his own review for "Halloween 3: Season of the Witch" (1982).
Originally Recorded on Sunday January 26th, 2025, and Sunday February 2nd, 2025. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Hey there, fans! That Horror Show Podcast embraces the new year with a brand-new episode featuring the return of Brazilian filmmaker Jose Mojica Marins' iconic character Coffin Joe (or 'Ze do Caixao' in his native Portuguese language). Show hosts Timothy Kazda and Chris Koenig reviewed three official Coffin Joe movies back in 2017 (memories!) and thought that was the end of the long-fingernailed, top hat-black wardrobe wearing coffin maker-turned-evil madman. But, as fate would have it, Coffin Joe showed up in a few "unofficial" movies, so it was inevitable the hosts would tackle them for review. So, for Part 1 of this episode: Coffin Joe goes 'Crypt Keeper' in "The Strange World of Coffin Joe" (1968) featuring three tales of bizarre terror, while "The Awakening of the Beast" (1969) is a "shockumentary"-type feature in which Brazilian society is going down the tubes and it all in some drug-induced way involves good ol' Joe! And for a bonus: Nate from 'Kids Corner' gives his take on "Halloween Kills" (2021). So what are you waiting for, fans? Give this episode a little spin!

We're going to the crossroads by the graveyard. This week, Joe and Rob check out the big daddy of gialli, Dario Argento's Deep Red (1975), and follow it up with At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul (1964), directed by Jose Mojica Marins (a.k.a. Coffin Joe). Italy's maestro of horror and Brazil's most famous horror icon together in one double feature! This is essential cult cinema, folks. We will be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for each. For Deep Red you can then skip ahead to the 1:13:37 mark, and for At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul, potential spoilers end at 1:45:21. Theme music: "The Cold Light of Day" by HKM. Check out HKM on #SoundCloud or Bandcamp

Jonny and Aileen head to Brazil to meet the infamous Zé do Caixão! Hear them practice different Brazilian accents (yes, Jonny and Aileen speak Portuguese!), talk about men with long nails, and discuss how this movie gave José Mojica Marins a lifelong cult following.
After too long a delay Cort Psyops returns to The Bloody Pit to dip back into the Brazilian madness of the second Coffin Joe film - THIS NIGHT I WILL POSSESS YOUR CORPSE (1967)! As I admit in the show, I was hesitant to go back to this series because I felt that Cort and I set a pretty high bar with our discussion of the first of Jose Marins' horror epics. That film forced us to examine our own moral precepts and how humanity's cruelty can easily form a philosophy of life twisted toward nihilism. We touched on the various topics of Marins' obsessions as we went through that film using it as a jumping off point for probing the darker aspects of our own psyches. With this second discussion, we do the same thing but - because all sequels have to go further to shock their jaded audience - we aim to dig a little deeper. Listen in and see if we manage it! We do slip down a few odd side roads that were not on the original map. Besides a brief discussion of Dario Argento's late trilogy wrap-up MOTHER OF TEARS (there's a good reason) we also find creative new ways to relate the tale of Coffin Joe to modern stories of note. In fact, I'm pretty sure that this will be the first podcast to ever link the horror output of Jose Mojica Marins to the TV shows It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia and Better Call Saul. Visions of monsters might be universal across all cultures in some surprising ways. We do our best to not lean too hard into the Catholic criticism that seems such a vital part of the subtext of the world of Coffin Joe. We get a few Mormon jokes in there to level things out a little! Sorry. If you want to contact the podcast the email address is thebloodypit@gmail.com or the FaceBook page is still a thing you can join. I try to post things of interest there and keep the talk fun. Thanks for downloading and listening!

This week, we go south of the border to sunny South America! A true pioneer in outsider cinema, Jose Mojica Marins fought both poverty and governmental censure to create and release his homegrown cinema of philosophical and literal transgression, using throwaway celluloid short ends and scratching "special effects" directly on the emulsion to bring his uniquely Nietzchean anticlerical Xe do Caixao (better known on these shores as Coffin Joe) and faux-messianic madman Finis Hominis to an outraged (but fascinated) citizenry! Allegedly (re)discovered by and granted his English language moniker by none other than Something Weird impresario Mike Vraney, their VHS reissues of these forgotten early 60's-mid 70's pieces of art maudit brought what had been an exclusively South American boogeyman (complete with a series of horror comics hosted by and featuring him) to a somewhat controversial international attention! We'll also be moving further south to chat about free spirited zaftig Argentinian hot tamale Isabel Sarli and her enabler Armando Bo (Fuego), and the quirky sex-horror of Emilio Vieyra (Feast of Flesh/The Deadly Organ, Blood of the Virgins, Curious Dr. Humpp)! It's a party down South of the Border, only here on Weird Scenes Inside the Goldmine! Week 34 Cinema South of the Border - Coffin Joe, Emilio Vieyra and Isabel Sarli
