This week marks the 25th anniversary of the 2001 Foot and Mouth outbreak, which caused devastation to thousands of farms across the country. Around 6.5 million animals were culled, with a cost to the UK economy of £8 billion. Charlotte Smith meets a farmer whose animals were destroyed in the outbreak, and speaks to UK Chief Vet Christine Middlemiss about the risk of another outbreak - and whether the response would be different. The issue of biosecurity at our ports has been in the spotlight in recent months. Dover Port Health Authority announced its highest ever monthly total of seizures of illegal meat - finding 34 tonnes of it in January. We hear from chair of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs select committee Alistair Carmichael MP, who gives us his reaction to the latest figures.Sheep shearing is an international business, with skilled shearers travelling the world to work across different countries. Many shearers who come to the UK are from Australia and New Zealand and have previously been allowed entry into the country each year via a special concession for highly skilled workers. This year, the UK Home Office has decided not to give this special temporary access. The National Association of Agricultural Contractors say these shearers are essential to the farming industry, and are warning that sheep welfare may be compromised without them.Farm vets are vital to any livestock business, but there's a shortage of vets wanting to work on farms. We join a cattle vet on a visit to a Wiltshire farm to hear about her role and Charlotte speaks to BVA president Rob Williams, who explains some of the reasons behind the shortage.Farming Today This Week was presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Jo Peacey. A BBC Audio Bristol production.

Novelist Eleanor Shearer joins co-hosts V.V. Ganeshananthan and Whitney Terrell to discuss her new novel, Fireflies in Winter, which depicts the little-known history of how the Leeward Maroons of Jamaica—a free Black community descended from formerly enslaved Africans and indigenous people—came to Nova Scotia at the end of the 18th century. Shearer, who is British and has Caribbean ancestry, explains the genesis of her interest in the Maroons as an example of successful resistance to slavery, since they fought the British in Jamaica, but also a kind of collusion with it, as they captured and returned runaway slaves to plantations there. She reflects on the connections between her Black heroines' precarious situation in historic Canada and the situation of immigrants in the U.S. and elsewhere today. She also considers her research process, depicting queer life in earlier periods, the importance of sensory and embodied detail in historical writing, and her choice to write about the past in the present tense. Shearer reads from Fireflies in Winter. To hear the full episode, subscribe through iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify, or your favorite podcast app (include the forward slashes when searching). “Captivating. Eleanor Shearer returns with a memorable tale of two young women yearning for home and love. I was drawn to the historical setting not typically seen in fiction – the lives of eighteenth-century Jamaican Maroons, removed to Canada, free on paper, yet still at risk.”—Charmaine Wilkerson, NYT best-selling author of Good Dirt In this episode Eleanor and I chat about her brand new book, Fireflies in Winter. We also talk about the Jamaican Maroon colony, queer love, her trips to Novia Scotia, her debut River Sing Me Home, and so much more. I loved this book, these characters, and the luminous prose. Fireflies in Winter is an excellent piece of historical fiction, that is not to be missed. In Episode 433 of Airey Bros Radio, we go belly-to-belly with Nate Shearer, Head Wrestling Coach at Washington & Lee University, for a deep dive into what it really takes to build a championship-level Division III wrestling program while maintaining elite academic standards.Coach Shearer breaks down his 13-year journey leading the Generals, how W&L climbed from small rosters and forfeits to becoming a conference champion and national contender, and why the ODAC's growth has made D3 wrestling in Virginia more competitive (and more fun) than ever.We also get into high-academic recruiting realities (early decision, fit-first recruiting, national pipeline), what W&L students actually study (business, engineering, health professions, CS), the culture shift that keeps athletes thriving, and the behind-the-scenes “CEO” side of running a program—travel, film, training, community, and consistency.Plus: Springsteen, the Stone Pony, coffee setups, saunas, vinyl, and the most dangerous guilty pleasure in America: ice cream.Follow Washington & Lee Wrestling:Website: generalsports.comSocial: @generalswrestle (Instagram/X)Support Airey Bros Radio (Value for Value):BuyMeACoffee.com/aireybrosTimestamp / Show Notes 0:00 ABR mission: shining light on JUCO/NAIA/D2/D3 opportunities + recruiting conversations we wish we had1:29 Intro: Nate Shearer, Head Coach at Washington & Lee Wrestling (Year 13)3:16 2025–26 snapshot: season context + ODAC dual stretch ahead3:52 Where recruits/parents should go: generalsports.com + @generalswrestle4:18 Through-line: ODAC talk + shoutout to Coach Nate Yetzer (Roanoke)5:05 Virginia D3 wrestling growth: from “only program” to a full conference6:43 Has ODAC expansion changed recruiting? Alison Shearer is a New York City-based saxophonist and composer. In October, she released her second album, In The Garden. Shearer performs live in our studio with her band, talks about the ideas behind the album and her relationship the saxophone, and her family connection to Civil Rights-era history: her father, John Shearer, was the second black staff photographer to work for Life magazine.
"In The Garden" The New York-born saxophonist/composer Alison Shearer's new album In The Garden is one of the most dynamic, stirring and altogether thrilling albums of the year. The follow up to her View From Above album, which was a moving tribute to her father John Shearer, the legendary civil rights-era photojournalist, In The Garden is a delicious blend of inventive time meters whose inspirations range from philosophy to children running through a Pakistani marketplace. Played with elegance and grace the compositions on In The Garden are a seamless collision of formalism and modernism and it's just exquisite work. Not only has Alison toured all over the U.S., Canada and South Asia, she's a touring member of Red Baraat and Sunny Jain's Wild Wild East, and she's on the faculty of Jazz at Lincoln Center's High School Jazz Academy. She's busy! But what's cool about Alison being busy is she's busy in her discipline and she's living the life of an artist with authenticity and joy. www.alisonshearer.bandcamp.com www.alisonshearermusic.com www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) IG + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

The Ohio Ag Net team wrapped up yet another successful year at the Farm Science Review. To all who stopped by to see us: Thank You! We're so glad we could share such a great week with you all. Till next year! This week on the Ohio Ag Net Podcast, we pulled together updates from across Ohio agriculture while at the Farm Science Review. Our own Dusty Sonnenberg caught up with State Director of Agriculture Brian Baldridge. The two discussed the latest happenings in the statehouse that impact Ohio agriculture; specifically, the recently passed budget bill. Director Baldridge also shared about his experience at the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture annual conference in Arkansas, the current status of epidural hematoma (EDH) in cattle, and everything in between. Ohio's Country Journal Editor Brianna Smith sat down with Luke Crumley, Director of Public Policy & Sustainability for Ohio Corn & Wheat. Crumley shared what they're focused on this time of year, the impact of vomitoxin on Ohio's corn growers, the state's gubernatorial race, and more. Lastly, Ohio Ag Net's Joel Penhorwood spoke with Dr. Scott Shearer, Professor and Chair of Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering at The Ohio State University. Penhorwood and Shearer talked all things agricultural innovation, especially what was on display at this year's Farm Science Review.

On this week's episode of That Peter Crouch Podcast, Pete, Chris, and Sids are all recording remotely – and it shows. With Chris juggling kids, a house move, and a wife in A&E after a freak avocado incident, the lads start with sincere apologies to our listeners. (Chris' audio improves after the 6 minute mark!)From there, it's classic chaos: Crouch's dodgy pink headphones, festival stories, and the announcement of Pete's a ridiculous forfeit…The football chat gets lively with breakdowns of Liverpool's comeback against Newcastle, predictions for Arsenal vs Liverpool, and reflections on stadium atmospheres – from dodgy sound systems to legendary announcers. The lads also go deep on traditions, Bovril vs modern food trends, and the unspoken bonds between fans who see each other every week but never exchange names.Expect tangents on circular beds, waterbeds, half-time Coldplay gigs, and even hypothetical transfer “sliding doors” moments like Shearer at United or Gerrard at Chelsea. It's loose, funny, chaotic – and feels like being back in the pub with your mates.Chumbawamba 00:00 – Lads open remotely, Chris apologises for chaos.00:01:36 – Chris reveals wife's avocado accident and A&E trip.00:04:05 – Pete talks about hosting Alex James' Big Feastival.00:07:16 – Forfeit revealed: mascot appearance at Farnham Town.00:12:07 – Liverpool's dramatic late comeback against Newcastle.00:14:05 – Chat on Max Dalman's debut and rising star potential.00:15:34 – Paddy Power predictions: Liverpool vs Arsenal debate.00:24:19 – Big shout: Burnley upset incoming?00:29:16 – Stadium acoustics and dodgy sound systems.00:34:14 – Fallen giants: Crouchy on quiet stadiums like Reading.00:36:10 – Pre-match hype: Chelsea's “blue carpet” and DJ.00:39:15 – Worst away days: QPR's cramped stands and pillars.00:45:10 – The underrated job of stadium announcers.00:55:12 – Mad idea: watching football from a stadium swimming pool.00:59:01 – Campaign to bring Bovril back for kids.01:03:27 – Fans who see each other weekly but never ask names.01:12:16 – Sliding doors: Shearer at United, Gerrard at Chelsea.01:16:25 – Chris' new bed arrives mid-recording.01:22:03 – Throwback to chaotic, boozy Covid-era pods.Follow our Clips page https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLNBLB3xr3LyiyAkhZEtiAA For more Peter Crouch: Twitter - https://twitter.com/petercrouch Therapy Crouch - https://www.youtube.com/@thetherapycrouch For more Chris Stark Twitter - https://twitter.com/Chris_StarkInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/chrisstark/For more Steve Sidwell Twitter - https://twitter.com/sjsidwell Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/stevesidwell14 #PeterCrouch #ThatPeterCrouchPodcast Hosted on Acast.

"This Is Spinal Tap" (1984), also known as "This Is Spın̈al Tap: A Rockumentary by Martin Di Bergi," is a mockumentary comedy directed by the legendary Rob Reiner in his feature debut and co-written with stars Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer, who play members of the fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap, hilariously dubbed "one of England's loudest bands." Satirizing rock star excess and the earnest style of classic rock documentaries, the largely improvised film earned critical acclaim, modest box office returns, and later a devoted cult following that cemented its status as a landmark of the mockumentary genre and the source of the iconic phrase "Up to eleven." Selected for preservation by the Library of Congress in 2002, the film will finally get a sequel, "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues," with Reiner, Guest, McKean, and Shearer reuniting for one last concert in September 2025. Director Rob Reiner was kind enough to speak with us about his work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out The Golden 41st Anniversary 4K restoration of "This Is Spinal Tap" (with a special intro from Rob Reiner) in theaters from July 5th-7th, 2025 (get your tickets here) from Bleecker Street and will feature the first look at "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues."
