Another of Nick's old friends, Enver Gjokaj - pronounced "Joke-Eye" - (Marvel's "Agent Carter" & "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.", Joss Whedon's "Dollhouse", Emergence) visits the studio, and almost instantly we're swept up in not only Enver's journeys abroad, but the deeply mindful journey he's embarked on over the last handful of years since he bottomed out with depression.  Enver's story is a story of resilience - from being raised at times by foster parents due to his mothers' drug addiction, to achieving nearly all of the life goals he has so far set for himself, to finally choosing a path of health, happiness and gratitude after years spent in an unhealthy mindset and self-abuse.  Enver speaks openly and eloquently about his struggles both personally and professionally, and how he works to overcome these struggles by devoting himself to his community of loved ones and serving a purpose higher than himself.  We're catching Enver at a beautiful and inspiring stage in his spiritual journey, and I know I walked away much better for having heard him tell about it.    Here's a link to the camp where Enver and his brothers spent part of their youth: Golden Valley Camp... Thank you to our Co-producer patron Kevin Wetter for selecting this week's topic! This 2009 TV show, helmed by Joss Whedon, was meant to be a thematic exploration of identity and sexuality but many have argued about its problematic story. Was that because of corporate interference or Whedon's own issues with feminist representation? Interested in the media we discussed this episode? She also discusses some of the difficult things about the series and why it's still a solid show to watch and re-watch over and over again. Oh, and you'll get some nerdy news and recommendations too! In our twenty-eighth episode of the SciFi Diner Classic, we interview Tahmoh Penikett (Karl "Helo" Agathon in Battlestar Galactica, Paul Ballard in Joss Whedon's Dollhouse, Nick Salva in Arrow, and Emerson in Man of Steel). This ep[isode was recorded at Farpoint and the room noise does make the interview sound rough. Since we do a news and interview show, it goes without saying that the news portion of our episodes often date themselves fast. And while the interviews with the people that make Science Fiction happen remain relevant and in our opinion important, most listeners will not listen back 150 episodes and wade through old news just to get to the interview. So what the SciFi Diner Classic aims to do is to share these interviews with you. If you have been with us from the beginning, then bear with us as we introduce some of our newer listeners to voices from the past. We're bringing you just the interview and nothing else.

Now that the DVDs are finally here, I resume commentaries for season one of Joss Whedon's Dollhouse. In the sixth episode "Man On The Street", Paul Ballard comes face to face with Caroline for the first time, sort of. During this particular engagement, she takes on the personality of Rebecca Mynor, wife to wealthy internet mogul, Joel Mynor (played with heartbreaking sincerity by comedian, Patton Oswalt). As soon as Boyd takes Echo away, Paul and Joel have a meeting of the minds about the need to pursue a fantasy and the justification for that need.Back at the Dollhouse, someone is abusing Sierra, sexually. An investigation leads first to Victor, but then down a more disturbing path. Meanwhile, Agent Ballard retreats back home to lick his wounds, after having come so close to rescuing Caroline, but failing to keep her within his grasp. Luckily, his friendly neighbor, Mellie (the delightful Miracle Laurie) is there as a willing consolation prize. If you can't be with the one you love, then love the one you're with. Please join me for this jam-packed, game-changing episode written by Joss Whedon. I discuss obsession versus nobility, the importance of geography and physical space within a fight scene and Patton Oswalt's truthful, satisfying brand of stand-up humor. All this and more as I try to fight off drowsiness from painkillers, while recovering from Kidney Stones. From this point on concerning Dollhouse, please listen for my preemptive countdown before starting the episode on your DVD.
