We're back again, this time with a shorter episode than normal - Montreal? Not a fun match to talk about, and the boys were social-ing a LOT more quietly this week than normal. Also, we're off to Dragon Con in Atlanta this weekend, so we didn't quite have as many days of content to plumb through as normal. That said, we do talk a bit about the match, about the fits, about the socials, and about some dogs, so definitely give it a listen and we'll talk to you next week!I wonder, does anyone else notice that when I (Mike) write the show notes, the photo I have saved of the Swoontower logo is slightly off-center? Or is it just me? Did I just ruin it for you?!Support the show
In this episode, Robert 'Big Shot Bob' Horry kicks off the weekend with a discussion about college football and the excitement surrounding Dragon Con in Atlanta. The conversation shifts to B-Dog visiting family in San Antonio, sharing laughs over Dragon Con costumes, and reminiscing about Jenners’ cousin, a professional stuntman. The crew also dives into some intriguing travel stories, the unique and intense pre-game rituals of MLB's Tyler Phillips, and a debate on NBA legends. Wrapping up with a fun Start-Bench-Cut that puts Tony Parker, Steph Curry, and Kyrie Irving head-to-head. 00:00 Introduction and Weekend Plans 00:27 Dragon Con Excitement 02:47 San Antonio Adventures 08:13 NBA Players Overseas 08:52 Travel Bucket Lists 11:01 Exploring the Kremlin's Rich History 12:29 WNBA Stars with Their Own Logos 14:14 Tyler Phillips' Intense Bullpen Routine 16:34 Comparing Michael Jordan and LeBron James 18:54 Game Seven: Start, Bench, Cut

✦ Brunching in Atlanta is practically a sport, and many of us don't know how to play. There are strategies involved—arrive early to beat the rush of a crowd, or maybe you're a diner that prefers to make reservations. BUT in this economy, who has the money to drop $80 to $100 on breakfast food and drinks every weekend? In our new mini-series, "Brunchin' on a Budget," we look at several delicious AND affordable brunch spots in Atlanta. On today's installment of "Brunchin' on a Budget," WABE Arts Reporter Summer Evans heads to Memorial Drive to highlight Homegrown. ✦ City Lights Collective member Shane Harrison spends his days at Arts ATL looking for cultural events to share with readers. He joins us weekly to share highlights, and today his mix includes House in the Park, The Atlanta Black Theater Festival, and a preview of Dragon Con. ✦ Dee Dee Bridgewater embodies jazz. She takes jazz standards and makes them her own while being true to the original composition. This is something she's done before and since releasing her debut album in 1974. No stranger to Atlanta, Ms. Bridgewater returns to the Rialto Center for the Arts on September 6 to the delight of all. Ahead of her concert, City Lights Collective Co-Host Jon Goode sat down with Ms. Bridgewater to discuss her new album, her return to Atlanta, and to share a laugh or three. ✦ Get ready for some cinematic chaos, VHS Deathmatch is coming to Monday Night Garage on September 26th. Part screening, part comedy showdown, the event takes the best (and worst) of B-movie VHS tapes and pits them head-to-head for ultimate bragging rights. City Lights Collective producer Josh Thane spoke with organizer Kristopher Bolz about the madness audiences can expect at the Deathmatch. ✦ Kosmo Vinyl is a visual artist and lifelong music lover. He bought his first LP when he was just nine years old and went on to spend decades immersed in the world of music. He got his start at London's groundbreaking indie label Stiff Records, and in 1979, he began working exclusively with The Clash—staying with the band until they disbanded in 1986. Today, Kosmo's legendary record collection fuels his social media series Kosmo's Vinyl of the Week, and he joins us every Wednesday to share the stories behind the records he treasures. Today, he tells us the story behind Creedence Clearwater Revival's 1969 hit, "Born on the Bayou." ✦ Ebony magazine debuted in 1945 and quickly became an inspiring celebration of Black life, culture, and achievement. The monthly magazine thrived for over seven decades, and within its pages lived the iconic column, "Fashion Fair," created by Eunice W. Johnson. "Mrs. Johnson," as all reverently called her, is the subject of the children's book, "Miles of Style," Eunice W. Johnson and the Ebony Fashion Fair." The book is the first by Atlanta author Lisa D. Brathwaite, and when City Lights Collective co-host Kim Drobes spoke with the author last year, Brathwaite explained how she first learned about Mrs. Johnson.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
I will be at Dragon Con in Atlanta on Labor Day Weekend, moderating Dragon Con's first ever Speedrun Showcase, speaking with the Dad of Boy himself Christopher Judge, and moderating a panel with the cast of SYFY's The Magicians! (Sadly, the Mortal Kombat panel was dropped from the schedule the day after this was recorded!) Sony has raised the price of all models of the PS5 by $50 in the USA due to the tariffs. Gamestop made a PR move saying they would cover the difference if you traded in a last gen console - but that deal was only for 24 hours. Steam now calculates the review score based on reviews in your spoken language to prevent review bombing from other territories - but they give you the option to go back to including all reviews. Then we talk about games that people were excited for at Gamescom, and to Rob about Dragon Con.
DragonCon is now starting to feel like it's here.

There you will find standing stones. Not one or two, but many laid out like a memory. Kilmartin Glen is considered to have one of the most important concentrations of Neolithic and Bronze Age remains in Scotland. There are more than 350 ancient monuments within a six mile radius of the village, with 150 of them being prehistoric. In the glen that we visited, we got a nice sized taste of those monuments. If you stand still long enough, you might be able to look back into time, like the TARDIS from Doctor Who. But these time machines don't fly, they stand cold and alone, watching everything, never blinking. Count the stones in the cover image and let prime numbers guide you to unlock your first Quest. These stones watched lovers part and children grow old. And in their stillness, they remember everything. They carry the weight of forgotten voyages. They are beautiful. And they are a little bit sad. That sadness seemed appropriate in 2022 when I led my Celtic Invasion of Scotland to Kilmartin Glen. The group was shrinking due to Covid. The feeling as people left the group. This song, ‘Blink,' was born of that fear, the fear of blinking and losing something beautiful. Of falling in love with someone so radiant, so unique, that you fear time itself. But also… It's a love song for the moment. It's for every second you choose to stay present, even when it hurts. Learn more about my song #277 “Blink”. Unlock the secret page. 22:31 - Marc Gunn “Blink” from Come Adventure With Me That's the end of today's tale, but the song lives on. Come back next week as we sail the Calf of Man through loss and resilience. Until then, don't blink. Don't look away. And may your memories always sing. 26:04 - CREDITS Thanks for listening to Quest & Chorus. This episode was edited by Mitchell Petersen. Blizzard's Story and Franchise Development team successfully formed a union! Gamescom is bigger than it ever has been before, and it's a model that ESA should have tried with E3. We're joined by Dungeon Crawler Carl creator Matt Dinniman and legendary audiobook narrator Jeff Hays! From self-publishing to bestsellers, TV adaptations, Dragon Con, and the voices behind Carl & Donut—this is the definitive DCC interview.
Tonight, Joe's out—so the cryptid chaos begins. Charles takes the captain's chair with Phil Keating and Bob McGough, and the result is equal parts comedy, fandom, and questionable uncle energy. From debating which fictional character you'd trust to babysit your kids (Mary Poppins? Kratos? Lisa Simpson? Definitely not Jared from Subway) to wandering into stories about abandoned luggage, Pokémon nannies, and cosplay so niche only three people will ever get it, this episode doesn't walk the line—it stumbles over it with a beer in hand.Bob dives deep into his love for cryptids (Mothman supremacy forever), Phil nerds out on Nintendo and Final Fantasy while accidentally admitting anime is growing on him, and Charles celebrates a proud dad moment with a side of Demon Slayer hype. Along the way, the trio tackles failure, imposter syndrome, and the power of showing up—even if only three people do.Of course, no “drunk uncle” night would be complete without dad jokes, hot dog confessions, and wild Dragon Con plans. This isn't your average nerd talk—it's family, fandom, and foolishness rolled into one chaotic ride.Highlights you'll hear:The great “fictional babysitter” debate (spoiler: Bulbasaur has vines for a reason)Cryptid confessions and why Mothman wins every timeTrying new things, failing gloriously, and finding joy anywayNintendo loyalty vs. PlayStation bullyingHot dogs, Gizzy Stations, and other unholy obsessionsGrab a drink, roll some dice, and join the madness—because tonight, the dads are nerdy, the uncles are drunk, and nothing is sacred.
Jon and Leigh chat with Liz, the director of the Alternate & Historical Fiction Track, where imagination collides with history. From dissecting the historical accuracy of Outlander, Bridgerton, and The Gilded Age, to celebrating 10 years of Tea Duels and the delightfully absurd Splendid Teapot Racing, this track is a fan-favorite blend of fact, fiction, and fun. 'We added historical fiction so it's not just history that never happened - it's also real history you might not know. And then, of course, we throw in tea duels, catillions, and teapot races. Because it's Dragon Con... why not?' - Liz The post 50 Days of Dragon Con 2025 – Day 44 – Alternate And Historical Fiction first appeared on The Unique Geek.

#outlander #bloodofmyblood In England 1917, Julia Moriston's job at the Redactment Office during World War I changes her life when she comes across a letter from a troubled soldier. The resulting correspondence with Lt. Henry Beauchamp becomes a lifeline for them both as they try to hold on to hope amidst death and destruction. After a whirlwind courtship, marriage, and parenthood, they are on holiday in Scotland when a car accident puts them on a life-altering path. When Julia - and then Henry - each stumble through the stones at Craigh Na Dun and arrive in the early 1700s, each must figure out how to navigate through this strange time, while also figuring out how to get back to each other and the daughter they left behind, Claire. (In related news: Dragon Con is eight days away and Hanako will be discussing both Outlander shows in two separate panels; details can be found at this link: https://www.fandomhybrid.com/blog/were-headed-back-to-dragon-con-2025/
If Dragon Con is your kind of happy chaos, Disability Services is the part that keeps it manageable. In this episode, Alex and Todd explain how to get an assessment, what the sticker system covers (seat‑in‑line/end‑of‑row, wheelchair seating, proximity, sightline), safe‑spaces for service dogs, and the medical tag. They also outline realities in the big rooms: line caps with tickets, one companions, and a focus on getting you in the room. ✦ Break out your Flux Capacitor because when this show hits 88 miles per hour, you're going to see some serious…. stuff. That's right, “Back to the Future, The Musical” is coming to the Fox Theater this September. Bob Gale, co-writer of the original movies who helped bring to life Marty McFly and Doc Brown, has adapted the story for the stage, giving these beloved characters a whole new dimension. City Lights Collective producer Josh Thane sat down with Gale, along with Atlanta native and cast member Cartreze Tucker, to talk about translating this cinematic classic into live theater magic. ✦ Quilting has a long, rich history that crosses many different cultures and eras. For African Americans, creating quilts served not only as a means of survival and communication but also as a tool to share stories and showcase their artistry. O.V. Brantly created the Atlanta Quilt Festival 17 years ago to preserve and promote African American quilting and textile art. The juried exhibition has grown to over 100 quilts on display at the Southwest Arts Center and is on view through September 6. WABE arts reporter Summer Evans went down to check out these vibrant pieces of artwork. ✦ City Lights Collective member Shane Harrison spends his days at ArtsATL looking for cultural events to share with readers. He joins us weekly to share highlights, and today his mix includes The Weeknd at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, A Strange Loop at Actor's Express, and two shows that highlight the silver screen at The Booth Western Art Museum. ✦ Visual artist and music enthusiast Kosmo Vinyl bought his first LP when he was nine. He spent the next several decades immersed in music and began his professional career at London's pioneering indie label, "Stiff Records." In 1979, Kosmo started working exclusively with "The Clash," who were once billed as The Only Band That Matters, and stayed by their side until the punk icons disbanded in 1986. Over the years, Kosmo's record collection became legendary. In 2014, he began posting about his favorite releases on social media for his series, "Kosmo's Vinyl of the Week," and he joins us weekly to share the stories behind the records he treasures. This week, he shares the story behind "Roadrunner" from The Modern Lovers. ✦ Known for his vibrant, retro-inspired illustrations, Atlanta-based artist Derek Yaniger's work is a delightful blend of mid-century modern aesthetics, vintage comic book style, and rock 'n' roll culture. His art often features bold lines, striking colors, and a playful sense of nostalgia, making him a standout in the world of contemporary illustration. Yaniger's journey has taken him through a variety of creative industries, from ad agencies to Marvel comics to Cartoon Network. He has a special place in his heart for Atlanta's pop culture convention Dragon Con and has collaborated on artwork that combined the ethos of the convention with his signature style. You can see Derek and his art next week in the Comic and Pop Artist Alley at Dragon Con, and he recently joined City Lights Collective Co-host Kim Drobes to discuss his artistic process, influences, and his attachment to our city's longest-running fan-based convention.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

With a free week before we start like eight months of nonstop Dragon Con coverage, Kevin and the Mayor are trying something new: We're recording the show from outside Chickentown Studios, in the great and filthy outdoors. Hopefully this will provide a more festive summertime atmosphere, until the mosquitoes and bats and angry villagers show up. Known for his captivating voice, insightful conversations, and passion for all things pop culture, McFall is a podcasting pioneer who has become a beloved figure in the digital media world. He's not just a voice, but a force shaping the conversation around fandom and entertainment. In a recent discussion, McFall offered a glimpse into the incredible plans for Dragon Con 2025. This year, fans can expect an even more immersive and engaging experience, with a focus on expanded gaming, a deeper dive into literature and science, and a star-studded guest list that includes actors from hit shows like The Magicians and Supergirl. McFall's role as the Director of Digital Media at Dragon Con means he's at the forefront of amplifying these voices and bringing the magic of the convention to an even wider audience. Web: https://www.dragoncon.org/ About: Dragon Con, a titan of pop culture conventions, has a rich and fascinating history that reflects the evolution of fandom itself. What began as a small gathering of enthusiasts in a single hotel has blossomed into a multi-venue, multi-genre extravaganza that draws tens of thousands of attendees each year. The Origins: A Small Gathering of Fans (1987-1989) Dragon Con's story begins in 1987 in Atlanta, Georgia. It was founded by a group of local science fiction and gaming fans who were part of an organization called the Dragon Alliance of Gamers and Role-Players (DAGR). The convention was initially a project of this group, with a board of directors that included John Bunnell, David Cody, Robert Dennis, Mike Helba, Pat Henry, and Ed Kramer. The name "Dragon" was inspired by Kramer's home computer, a Dragon 64, which also hosted a bulletin board system that served as a central hub for the group. The inaugural Dragon*Con (as it was originally stylized) was held at the Pierremont Plaza Hotel and attracted a modest 1,400 fans. It featured notable guests like author Michael Moorcock and Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Gary Gygax, and even included a performance by Blue Öyster Cult's Eric Bloom, singing songs inspired by Moorcock. This early convention established a key tradition: a big-tent approach that brought together different facets of geek culture. The event grew quickly. By 1989, with Anne McCaffrey as the Guest of Honor, attendance had more than doubled, prompting a move to the Omni Hotel and Convention Center to accommodate the swelling crowd. Rapid Expansion and Diversification (1990s-2000s) The 1990s and 2000s saw Dragon Con's explosive growth. The convention became known for its "big tent" philosophy, bringing together fans of everything from sci-fi and fantasy to comics, gaming, and anime. Key milestones during this period include: * Move to multiple hotels: As attendance soared, the convention expanded to encompass a cluster of downtown Atlanta hotels, including the Hyatt Regency, Marriott Marquis, and Hilton Atlanta. This interconnected "campus" of hotels, linked by skywalks and bridges, became a hallmark of the Dragon Con experience. * The Parade: The annual Dragon Con Parade down Peachtree Street, a showcase of elaborate and creative cosplay, was first held in 2002. It has since become a beloved and widely recognized part of the convention, drawing thousands of participants and spectators. * Charitable efforts: Dragon Con established a strong charitable component, raising money for various causes. The annual Robert A. Heinlein "Pay It Forward" blood drive, which began in 2002, is consistently one of the largest convention-based blood drives in the country. * Programming: The number of programming tracks and events expanded exponentially, covering a vast range of topics from writing and alternate history to robotics and space science. A New Era: Growth and Refinement (2010s-Present) In 2013, the convention officially dropped the asterisk from its name, becoming "Dragon Con," following a legal restructuring that severed ties with one of the original founders. This marked a new era of management and growth. In recent years, Dragon Con has continued to thrive, reaching a pre-pandemic attendance of over 85,000 in 2019. Post-pandemic, the convention has implemented attendance caps to ensure a safer and more manageable experience for all. While still a massive event, the focus has shifted to maintaining a high-quality experience, with an emphasis on unique programming, engaging workshops, and a strong sense of community. Today, Dragon Con stands as one of the world's premier pop culture conventions. It's a place where fans can not only meet their favorite celebrities and artists but also connect with fellow enthusiasts, celebrate their passions, and immerse themselves in a vibrant, inclusive, and unforgettable weekend of geek culture.
