He's toured as a drummer with bands India.Arie, Victor Wooten, Randy Crawford, Joe Sample, TLC, Ray Parker Jr., The Crusaders, Fifth Dimension, and Arrested Development to name a few. He has also performed live on “Saturday Night Live,” “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Good Morning America,” and many more. Forrest is also the drummer in Phil Collen's (Def Leppard lead guitarist) blues-rock-n-soul band Delta Deep. This included his music studio, revered drum set ‘Gretchen,' all his musical instruments, and vital computer equipment. Forrest and Paige evacuated their home the evening before, as directed, wearing only the clothes on their backs carrying their small pup. 'The Shoutout Music Appreciation 101', a weekly radio program on the Stationhead music platform and it's dedicated listening family, the TSO Audio Crew, have unified with the creation of this GoFundme to get the attention of many to help us assist Forrest who has been a dear friend, thoughtful person and masterful musical talent. Email overload! This week's quiz: On 13 July I asked you yet another question about France's snap legislative elections. As you know, the left coalition New Popular Front won the most seats, followed by Macron's centre-right alliance, with the far-right National Rally in third place. None of the parties have an absolute majority. There's been something of a “cease-fire” during the Olympic Games, so not much has been done. However, the French constitution sets strict deadlines for when key positions must be filled; one of these is the appointment of chairs for each of the eight standing parliamentary committees. That was your question – what are those eight standing committees, and by which date must the chairs of each committee be decided? The answer is: Finance, foreign affairs, defence, economy, social affairs, culture, sustainable development, and law. The date for deciding the chairs was 20 July. So that has happened: six of the eight committees are headed by the centre-right coalition, and the other two were taken by the left coalition. The centre-right and the left coalition joined forces and no position was allocated to the far-right National Rally. In addition to the quiz question, there was the bonus question: “What was your biggest life-changing decision, and how did it change your life?”Do you have a bonus question idea? Send it to us! The winners are: RFI English listener Malik Allah Bachaya Khokhar from the Sungat Radio Listeners Club in Muzaffargarh, Pakistan. Malik is also the winner of this week's bonus question – congratulations, Malik! There are two winners from India this week: Nafisa Khatun, the president of the RFI Mahila Shrota Sangha Club in Hariharpara, and Mousumi Khatun, a member of the RFI International DX Radio Listeners Club in Murshidabad. Moving over to Bangladesh, there's Shrabonty Shermin, a member of the RFI Surfers' Society Bangladesh in Rajshahi, and RFI English listener Rowshan Ara Labone from Dhaka.Congratulations winners! Here's the music you heard on this week's programme: “Pendulum” by Eberhard Weber, performed by the composer and Paul McCandless; “Contrapunctus 1” from J.S. Bach's The Art Of Fugue, BWV 1080, performed by the Emerson Quartet; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “The Cakewalk” from Children's Corner by Claude Debussy, performed by the composer; “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, and “Street Life” by Joe Sample and Will Jennings, performed by The Crusaders.Do you have a music request? Episode 115. Join host Troy Saunders as he chats with writer, producer, multi instrumentalist, pianist, Jesse Thompson!Born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, known in music circles as the land of funk, Jesse Thompson couldn't help but be influenced by the city's great R&B pioneers – including Slave, Ohio Players, Lakeside and Zapp featuring Roger Troutman. For the past 20 years, the multi-talented composer, pianist and keyboardist manifested these inspirations – and helped bring the legacies of these legendary bands forward – as a former member of the popular and prolific, constantly gigging Columbus-based R&B/jazz ensemble NexLevel.Unlike many longtime band members and sidemen who work towards someday expressing themselves as solo artists, Thompson was content with his existing whirlwind of activity playing with others. But when the pandemic hit, he instinctively used his down time to, as he says, “sow a seed of happiness” to create “Weekend Groove” – an irrepressible Next-Gen disco vibin' house beat driven track featuring flutist Althea Rene and a horn section by Kelly O'Donohue that ultimately became the lead single to his uniquely titled debut album The Inauguration of Jtjazz (Jesse Thompson the Man Behind the Keys). Though its dance floor ready lead single “Weekend Groove” will immediately spark excitement and lift the spirits just as Jesse Thompson intended, there are a multitude of other pleasures to experience on The Inauguration of Jtjazz (Jesse Thompson the Man Behind the Keys) – an album which truly rolls like an autobiographical blend of his many influences, from those Dayton funk legends to George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Joe Sample and Brian Culbertson. The album's latest single “It Doesn't Matter” is a sensual, easy grooving romantic joint featuring Thompson interacting with #1 Billboard charting trumpeter Lin Rountree – who he connected with via mutual connections at the individual HBCU schools they attended. As a showcase for Thompson's great talents on Fender Rhodes (creating a moody effect and his sparkling acoustic piano, the song taps into Thompson's love of Joe Sample's vibe both with the Crusaders and as a solo artist. The elegant funk ballad “The Right One Baby” offers a similar seductive duality. Troy highlighted three song from this incredible project "Weekend Grove", Obsidian, and "It Doesn't Matter".Being the son of a father who was a professional jazz drummer and a mother who was a church organist/pianist, Jesse Thompson – aka “JTJazz” came by his musical gifts naturally and started playing the drums as his first instrument at the age of five. By the time JT was twelve years old, he played a total of thirteen instruments, the piano being one of them. In addition to his parents, he was influenced by his oldest brother Marvyn Wheatley, who recorded and played with Parliament and Slave. Thompson spent time with his brothers in the studio hanging out with Slave, Roger Troutman & Zapp, Steve Arrington and othersThese experiences truly fueled his musical passions and ambitions. While he studied manufacturing engineering and IT at Central State University (in Wilberforce, OH), he played in the school's marching band and jazz ensemble and joined the national honorary band of the Kappa Kappa Psi fraternity. His other influences include Alex Bugnon, Jimmy Smith, Billy Preston, Jeff Lorber, James Lloyd and Bob James.Troy and Jesse discusses Jesse's musical bucket list, future endeavors giving back and more.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. David Fleming speaks with Charles Kelly - a professor on the campus of San Bernardino Valley College and a musician whose past includes working with say, Stevie Wonder, Joe Sample, The Pointer Sisters, Sister Sledge, the TV show Fame... He was on the program a little over a year ago talking about a single which had JUST come out called "Endangered Species." That single opens the now complete disc, "You're Not Alone." Contemporary jazz with a funk and drive through and through. We'll hear about the disc - and some of the ideas behind it... and we'll hear FROM it here and there.Great music and QUITE a few laughs. Get Funky with The Gap Band, James Brown, Patti Labelle, Allen Stone, Paloma Faith, Maxwell, Joe Sample, The Black Eyed Peas, Beck, Earth Wind & Fire, Lenny Kravitz, L.T.D., and M.C. Hammer. Funky Funky.
It's Monday, October 17. Today, a North Dakota man is charged with storing hundreds of pounds of homemade explosives, Democrat Monica Tranel makes a bid for Montana's new western U.S. House district, and we pay tribute to Joe Sample, who died last week at age 99.
World-renowned percussionist Wally Reyes Jr's love for music stemmed from his early childhood experience with his father buying him a new drum set. Though time and passion have been a driving force for Wally Reyes Jr's mastery of his craft, they have also honed his creativity and innovation in the most unexpected times – whether at home or in the studio. Touring and performing live with the most established bands is a team effort, he fondly retells. He shares never failing to show appreciation for the staff as “without them, we're just musicians that play, but there's nothing on stage.” Sacrifice, the humility to learn, and the heart in doing the best show for the audience are how Wally Reyes Jr. taps his foot to the rhythm of life as a musician, producer, teacher, and father. Join me in this episode of Someone Gets Me — How to Find your Rhythm with Wally Reyes Jr. ▶️ Key point covered in this episode: ✔️ Intuition is part of creativity. Wally Reyes Jr compares the team effort in performing in a band to a school of fish. It takes a unique type of intuition for fish to swim and look out for each other, just as how experienced musicians learn to react appropriately when things go awry. ✔️Always improve the vehicle that takes you to your creativity. A sudden burst of creativity can come when you're making your morning coffee or spending time with loved ones. Wally Reyes Jr. recommends heeding that call to practice your craft and keep you in tip-top musical and mental shape. ✔️Ask for help. Fear is the biggest hurdle to improvement. Surround yourself with experts who can further enrich your skills. And don't be afraid to ask even the silliest questions. What's the worst that could happen? ✔️Put yourself in a position to receive the blessing. If you're not prepared and you miss your chance, rewrite your plan. You may be in a place that hinders your growth. Go where the experts and students in your field thrive. This opens you up to endless opportunities. It's not enough to be talented to stand out either. Learn to collaborate with your peers and mentors, and foster strong relationships. ✔️You deliver what you need to deliver. As a musician playing for big names like Chicago and Santana, Wally Reyes Jr. explains that improvisation should be left in your alone time. Audiences flock to shows to hear the soundtrack of their lives – untouched and unchanged. ✔️Go to your grave with nothing left inside you. Give it your all until your tank is empty. Don't leave this world filled with regret about the amazing things that you could've created. This is the ultimate goal. ✔️Being a master of something takes sacrifice. The greatest, most talented artists spend most of their days in isolation – practicing, creating, and honing their craft. Reaching the highest level of mastery requires a period of focus and work before fame and recognition come. Few drummers playing today can successfully combine the rich history of Latin, Afro-Cuban, and World Percussion with the drum set. For Walfredo Reyes, Jr., fusing the two disciplines has been his driving passion. In fact, by blazing this path, Reyes has challenged the technical levels of our instrument. Born in Cuba, raised in Puerto Rico, and culminating his musical style in the U.S., Wally (Walfredo Jr.) learned the traditions from the master, his father Walfredo Sr. He married those principles with his love of the drum set, coming up with his own truly global rhythmic style. Simply put, Wally is able to sound like a drummer and a percussionist at the same time. Add blistering chops and a penchant for playing unusual patterns to the mix, and you have only a small idea of what this man can do. Not surprisingly, this “one-man percussion show” has gathered an impressive list of gigs over the years, including touring and/or recording with: Carlos Santana, Traffic, Steve Winwood, Jackson Browne, Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, David Lindley, Ricki Lee Jones, Richard Marx, Sergio Mendes, Smokey Robinson, Robbie Robertson, Joe Sample, Boz Scaggs, Christina Aguilera, Ricky Martin, Johnny Hallyday, Khaled, Lindsey Buckingham, Chicago, and many others. Because of his versatility, Walfredo is one of the most in-demand musicians in the world today. He continues to expand his talents to recording, producing, composing, education, live performance, and touring.” Bio written by Rick Van Horn. Walfredo is currently touring with the world-renowned Classic Rock band, Chicago, playing drumset. EPISODE 4 - Welcome back to Living The Next Chapter, the podcast! We are pleased to introduce you to an author in the making, Tony Saunders!ABOUT TONYTwo-time Emmy Award winning bassist, composer, producer and son of legendary San Francisco Bay Area keyboardist, Merl Saunders, Tony Saunders' life has been infused with one musical adventure after another. As an arranger, producer, composer and performer, Saunders has conquered the worlds of jazz, gospel, R&B, pop, rock and world music. He earned the first of his two Emmys at age 14 for collaborating with his dad on the PBS documentary Soul Is and by 17 was playing with Merl and Jerry Garcia on their collaborative projects. The second was earned for his contribution on the TV show, Digital Journey, on the episode, “China: Their New Digital Economy.” Though he took one of his first musical lessons on piano from Herbie Hancock, the bass he received from John Fogerty's brother Tom – and watching recording sessions with famed bassists Anthony Davis and Lee Miles - sparked a lifelong passion for that instrument that now, 50 years later, has led to his emergence as a major independent force in contemporary jazz. After launching his career with his dad Merl and Jerry Garcia, Saunders embarked on a diverse career that has found him playing and recording with a virtual who's who of popular music and jazz – including Eric Clapton, David Crosby, Dave Liebman, Les McCann, Dr. John, Joe Sample, Chaka Khan, Ringo Star, Bo Diddley, Mavis Staples, John Lee Hooker, The Hawkins Family, Jeff Lorber and Paul Jackson Jr. Over the years, Tony has scored films, corporate videos, TV shows and commercials, and produced many artists out of his own studio, Studio 1281. He's written the music and been musical director for stage musicals, including Rock Justice, which was co-written by Jefferson Starship's Marty Balin.Hear about the upcoming book Behind The Bass Lines due out early this year, Tony Shares some great stories and we talk about February as Black History Month and what that means to him and where are we headed in the future.Visit: https://www.tonysaunders.com/ for more about Tony, his upcoming book and the music
