On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with Mark Kibble of Take 6, a group whose music has been part of my life since the very beginning of my musical journey.   We start with a full-circle moment, me seeing Take 6 live as a teenager, and now getting to sit down and talk with Mark about his career, his process, and the music that continues to inspire him.We begin with his work on Pat Metheny's latest project, in which Mark contributed vocal arrangements that add an entirely new dimension to Pat's sound. Zijn oeuvre lijkt zich steeds te onttrekken aan elke definitie die men erop loslaat. Dat maakt zijn betekenis filosofisch relevant: Davis laat zien dat identiteit niet iets statisch is, maar een proces van voortdurende transformatie. Een van de opvallendste kenmerken van zijn muziek is het gebruik van ruimte. In albums als *Kind of Blue* wordt stilte niet als leegte ervaren, maar als een actief element. Deze benadering roept vragen op over de aard van expressie zelf. Moet muziek altijd gevuld zijn, of kan juist het weglaten een diepere vorm van communicatie zijn? Davis' antwoord lijkt te zijn dat betekenis ontstaat in de spanning tussen klank en stilte. Daarmee sluit hij aan bij een bredere existentiële intuïtie: dat wat niet gezegd wordt, vaak even belangrijk is als wat wel wordt uitgesproken. Daarnaast belichaamt Davis het idee van artistieke vrijheid als morele houding. Hij weigerde zich te conformeren aan de verwachtingen van zijn publiek of de industrie. Telkens wanneer hij succes bereikte—of het nu ging om bebop, modal jazz of fusion—koos hij ervoor om een nieuwe richting in te slaan. In die zin is zijn carrière een praktijk van wat de filosoof Nietzsche “zelfoverwinning” noemde: het voortdurend achterlaten van het oude zelf om ruimte te maken voor het nieuwe. Today on the show I speak with 'The Daywalkers' band leaders - Alex Harris MacDonald (vocals/washboard) + Janson Lohmeyer keyboardist/vocals.This was a tough interview for me to post because unfortunately Janson Lohmeyer tragically passed away, only a few days after we had this conversation. I wrestled with myself as to whether or not I should still put it out, but ultimately decided I would - as I believe it could serve as a nice reminder to all of us that knew Janson, as to what a kind soul he truly was. Over the decades 'The Daywalkers' (who fuse Louisiana Roots Music with Cajun, Pop and Zydeco) have developed a reputation as a high quality live band, attracting visiting from all over the world to see the group while visiting the city of New Orleans.Among many notable accolades, the band have released three albums of original material and individually, Janson has appeared on releases by Adam Duritz (Counting Crows), Lucinda Williams and Susan Cowsill. This week in the stack we celebrate birthdays of Joe Sample and Rick James. RIP Sly Dunbar. It's forty years since Janet Jackson's Control dropped, so that's in the mix too... Otherwise it's the usual - papering over the cracks between Brazilian boogie, Turkish psych, bit of Latin, jazz-funk, soul, whatever else made sense at the time. Ken Navarro began his recording career in Los Angeles as a premier session guitarist, performer and composer, performing and recording with artists as diverse as Doc Severinsen, Nell Carter, John Patitucci, Eric Gale, Vicki Carr, Dave Koz, Ann Jillian and Alex Acuna. In 1990, Ken established his own musical identity with the release of his debut album, The River Flows. With each successive album, Ken has received increasing acclaim and recognition as a leading stylist in Contemporary Jazz. Ken has made concert appearances at festivals, clubs, performing arts centers throut the world. Ken has shared the stage with artists such as Spyro Gyra, Chuck Mangione, Najee, Chris Botti, The Rippingtons, David Sanborn, Joe Sample, Jean Luc Ponty, Stanley Clarke, Larry Carlton, George Howard, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Keiko Matsui, David Benoit, Boney James and many others.  Ken's contribution to Contemporary and Mainstream Jazz goes beyond his personal artistry. Ken has produced successful albums for Narada/EMI recording artist Eric Darius as well as saxophonist Tony Craddock Jr. and pianist Jay Rowe to name a few. As founder of Positive Music Records, Ken is responsible for launching and furthering the recording careers of saxophonist Brandon Fields, guitarists Grant Geissman, Thom Rotella and Pat Kelley, and keyboardists Gregg Karukas, Jay Rowe and Marcus Johnson. Ken's vision of a musician's record label has enhanced the genre with over 35 new artists and 100 releases.

Michael Cates is a veteran saxophonist and composer based now in Dallas TX.Growing up in New Jersey,  Michael Cates found success moving to LA in the 90's where the music community quickly had him sharing the stage with Jennifer Lopez, Elton John, Barry White, Tina Turner, Joe Sample and others.He's released four full length EP's and many singles by now in 2025 and regularlycharts on various Smooth Jazz Charts. With seven Grammy Awards under his belt, Forrest Robinson has built quite the musical career for himself. He's toured as a drummer with bands India.Arie, Victor Wooten, Randy Crawford, Joe Sample, TLC, Ray Parker Jr., The Crusaders, Fifth Dimension, and Arrested Development to name a few. He has also performed live on “Saturday Night Live,” “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Good Morning America,” and many more. Forrest is also the drummer in Phil Collen's (Def Leppard lead guitarist) blues-rock-n-soul band Delta Deep.   On the night of January 8th, 2025, during the devastating California fires that ravaged tens of thousands of acres, including the entire city of Altadena, Forrest's home he shared with his wife Paige, was razed to the ground. This included his music studio, revered drum set ‘Gretchen,' all his musical instruments, and vital computer equipment. Forrest and Paige evacuated their home the evening before, as directed, wearing only the clothes on their backs carrying their small pup. For the past 20 years, the multi-talented composer, pianist and keyboardist manifested these inspirations – and helped bring the legacies of these legendary bands forward – as a former member of the popular and prolific, constantly gigging Columbus-based R&B/jazz ensemble NexLevel.Unlike many longtime band members and sidemen who work towards someday expressing themselves as solo artists, Thompson was content with his existing whirlwind of activity playing with others. But when the pandemic hit, he instinctively used his down time to, as he says, “sow a seed of happiness” to create “Weekend Groove” – an irrepressible Next-Gen disco vibin' house beat driven track featuring flutist Althea Rene and a horn section by Kelly O'Donohue that ultimately became the lead single to his uniquely titled debut album The Inauguration of Jtjazz (Jesse Thompson the Man Behind the Keys). In 2007 Alisha relocated to Houston, Texas to further pursue her musical career and became a major player on the blues and jazz scene. In 2012 Alisha released her debut CD “Along For The Ride”, in 2015 “Billabong Island Sound”, 2017 “H-Town Collective.” Houston also presented her with the opportunity to perform alongside national acts such as Portugal.
