Juan Camilo Garzon is the Founder of Kickbite and an entrepreneur with a passion for analytics. His purpose is to level the playing field for small and medium companies by providing them with tools to compete against big corporations. His company Kickbite is an analytic platform that empowers small businesses to improve their return on investment by measuring the customer journey accurately and identifying the touchpoint that drives the most value. KEY TAKEAWAYS It's really important to know when to start your global journey as well as where. Expanding too early or too late both have their consequences. You need to be open-minded about your new export minded as it might cost you a different amount of time and money due to the difference in customer journeys. Having a data-driven mindset and making use of the existing analytics can and will carry your business so much further. Understanding the different metrics of your target market and making use of the data at hand can bring you as much success as you have in your core market. BEST MOMENTS "First of all, you need to be aware that everything you're going to be testing is going to take at least a couple of weeks in order for you to see the results. For one, it's patience. Second of all, it's also more expensive. What I mean is that you may be used to some metrics in your core markets. In your new markets, because the customer journeys are longer and because you have lower brand awareness, there might be completely different values. You have to be open-minded that new metrics in the new markets might be different." "Timing, in my opinion, is everything. Especially for a small or medium-sized business with limited resources. Because expanding too early might result in pure execution and expanding too late might be very costly because you have already more competitors established. So normally I look at 3 factors; resources timing, market timing, ecosystem or economy timing." "I have seen many cases where expansions fail because they underestimate the amount of work that needs to happen." "The main question is: Is the market ready for your product? Because markets can be at different stages. It could be your core markets where the customers are already ready to buy your new idea while your target markets could be at a slower stage. So making sure that the market that you are moving on to has a similar timing as your current market is definitely a good tip." "Localization is fundamental for success. So having localized content would make your entry into a new market easier and also cheaper." El Adios a CNET en Español junto a JUAN GARZON. Ya hace tiempo quería traerte a este colombiano
Today, Juan Garzon jumps back on the Charlotte Angel Connection – his second time and first since his appearance as the 4th guest (listen to Juan’s first podcast here). Juan is the Executive Director at Innovate Charlotte. Most of us have known Juan, or known of Juan, for nearly a decade now as he has been an integral part of the startup ecosystem. Between his work over the years with Pitch Breakfast, launching the Start Charlotte newsletter (now Charlotte Inno), or any number of other things Juan has done to help startups over the years, Juan has been a tireless advocate of all things startup related in Charlotte. We wanted to catch up with Juan to discuss his new role as Executive Director at Innovate Charlotte. We’ve spoken with Walt Frye and Keith Luedeman as they lead the organization in the past and wanted to hear from Juan how it will expand/grow as the ecosystem continues to build up strength and momentum. As you may know or recall, Innovate Charlotte is a nonprofit organization with a mission to enhance, elevate, and accelerate entrepreneurial success in the greater Charlotte region. Their focus is on cultivating an intentionally inclusive and high impact ecosystem that stimulates innovation, economic growth and societal change. Juan explains the VMS and Navigator Program along with other initiatives they offer to the Charlotte’s startup ecosystem. We discuss the growth of entrepreneurship making Charlotte a destination as well as creating more opportunities for home-grown entrepreneurs. We also dive into how the City of Charlotte is getting involved to help grow entrepreneurship – with a goal of building a more diverse start-up community. Juan shares opportunities for other non-profit organizations. NCIdea, which supports entrepreneurs/mentor programs throughout North Carolina. Pitch Breakfast, which is a platform for companies to practice their pitch, has continued to operate throughout the pandemic and is waiting for guidance and when and how it can get back to being an in person event. At the end of the podcast we talk what it takes to have entrepreneurs stay engaged. It’s a great podcast. QC Fintech Class 9 is getting ready for its demo day which coincides with the Southeast Fintech Venture Conference on November 14. In preparation, we had the opportunity to talk with three different founders companies who are part of Class 9: iTrust – (www.itrustinc.com) - Trevor Horwitz Mimble (www.mimble.co) – Chad Huber AMUS (www.askmyunclesam.com) – Busayo Ogunsanya After getting to know each of the companies and their founders on the podcast, we dive into the topic of what allows them to come back to Charlotte in 5 years and celebrate their success as entrepreneurs. After all, every startup city is littered with great ideas which never gained traction, found investors or made it through the difficult path of success. We also dive into the discussion of investors. What’s it like to talk with investors as young companies and how soon is too soon to start the discussion. One interesting topic we discuss is what success means for each founder. Is an IPO the only way to go for these founders or is there something before? Local notes and thoughts: Thank you to Dan Roselli and his team at Packard Place for our first sponsorship. They have hosted more than 2 dozen of our interviews over the last couple of months and have offered one of their used Yeti’s for us to use with guests when we go offsite. They are a great community supporter for all things startup in Charlotte. NC IDEA recently issued two $100,000 grants to Charlotte entities – StartCharlotte (led by Juan Garzon) and Innovate Charlotte (with Keith Luedeman currently serving as interim leader of the organization). It should be very exciting for the Charlotte Startup community that both of these local organizations have some fresh capital to continue serving the ecosystem? Go support high school area entrepreneurs at the Techstars Startup Weekend Charlotte Youth. It starts on Friday November 2 with the demo day on Sunday afternoon at Johnson C. Smith University (Stem Hall). Collective Hustle is an investor and startup coalition looking to improve the Queen City’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. They meet monthly and their next event is coming up on November 7 – you can register by clicking here. Juan Garzon is the Co-Founder of Pitch Breakfast where entrepreneurs pitch investors over coffee while everyone is listening. I had the honor of pitching at a Pitch Breakfast here in Asheville last week and carved out a little time afterwards to talk about Juan's passion for connecting entrepreneurs with a good story for investors
You are in for a real treat today with Erica Madden who is now the Executive of Launch LKN – an initiative started by Mark McDowell and brothers Chris and Jon Boggiano to bring founders, mentors and investors together in Lake Norman area. While new to the Startup and investment world, Erica has spent years working with non-profits who also display a high level of passion and run on a tight budget. Once it was announced that Launch LKN was getting off the ground, I thought it was important to do a podcast with Erica for several reasons. First, she’s becoming a fantastic resource for entrepreneurs in Lake Norman – and broader Charlotte. Next, Lake Norman looks to have a huge untapped talent pool to help entrepreneurs and investors and I wanted to get Erica’s sense on how it develops. Finally, due to her involvement with Launch LKN she’s started to work with a local Charlotte area startup – meaning local startups are in the market for top talent. Highlighting all three of those while letting you get to know Erica seemed like a win for listeners. What is Launch LKN (www.launchlkn.org)? Building a community in greater Charlotte and Lake Norman to match the members – founders – with mentors who are serial entrepreneurs and executive leaders. The ‘hidden talent’ in the Davidson/Lake Norman area is largely untapped. First event was held in late January and more than 60 or 70 people attended and since that time even more people are visiting the website to sign up as mentors or offer to support. Why is now the time for the Lake Norman community to develop and flex its entrepreneur community? A very beneficial plug for Start Charlotte (www.startcharlotte.com) – an initiative by Juan Garzon – as the resource or central location for all things startup Charlotte. Listen to Juan’s podcast here on the Charlotte Angel Connection. What is the future or vision for Launch LKN? What role is Davidson College having in the startup and entrepreneur scene in Davidson? One big initiative is being led by brothers and serial entrepreneurs Chris and Jon Boggiano. Jon was on Episode 3 of the Charlotte Angel Connection. What are the similarities between the non-profit space and startups – including Erica’s first introduction to the startup/venture capital space, working with Brandon Shelton of Task Force X (www.tfxcap.com). An introduction to a young startup in Charlotte – Fit to Rent (www.fit2rent.com) – which is designed to benefit both renters and landlords through an interactive and thought providing course. Be on the lookout for a podcast coming soon with Founder of Fit to Rent, Sean Healy.
Juan Garzon weaves in a great history of how he got involved in the Charlotte startup scene and how you can too with a great breakdown of the resources behind Charlotte's growing startup scene. If you are interested in learning more about what's going on, this is a great place to get started. Juan is a business strategist & marketing coach who helps entrepreneurs and small business owners craft their story and build a system to grow their own business. He is also the founder of the marketing and sales communication firm, the Garzón Company, as well an organizer and mentor/advisor for a host of other entrepreneurial organizations in Charlotte. Once you are done listening, head over to learn more about the things we discuss like StartCharlotte (http://startcharlotte.com/), Pitch Breakfast (www.pitchbreakfast.com/), and QC Fintech (www.qcfintech.co).
We were joined by Juan Garzon to discuss Charlotte's startup scene. Juan has his fingers on the pulse of all things startup and updates John and Miller on Pitch Breakfast and Start Charlotte. He also answers some rapid fire questions and listens to some half-baked pitches. John later gives Miller a priceless gift and update us on banking history in Charlotte.
