If you want to get leaner and live longer, check out https://milliondollarbodylabs.com/   What if your body could warn you about burnout or illness before you even feel it, possibly even days before it happens?   In this episode, I sat down with Dr. Torkil Færø, a Norwegian doctor and author of The Pulse Cure, to talk about heart rate variability, or HRV and how it can give us early warning signs about our health. He shared how he got into HRV tracking while on a sailing trip, and how it opened his eyes to how much stress and recovery affect our bodies.   We talked about what HRV really tells us, how wearables like Garmin, WHOOP, and Oura can help track it, and how small daily habits, like what you eat, how you sleep, or even when you work out, can change your HRV. Dr. Færø also told stories of real people who've used this data to catch serious health issues early, like cancer.   Key Takeaways:   It's personal, track your own trends instead of comparing numbers with others. HVR It's like having your own early warning system for stress and health. Garmin gives more detailed stress tracking, while Oura and WHOOP are great for sleep and tagging daily habits.   Resources:   Dr. Torkil Færø is a Norwegian medical doctor, emergency physician, and bestselling author of The Pulse Cure. In this episode of the Admittedly Podcast, host Thomas Caleel dives into one of the most misunderstood parts of the college application: the Additional Information section. With the word count now reduced from 650 to 300 words, this section is no longer a free-for-all—it requires strategy, clarity, and discipline. Thomas breaks down what this section is actually for, who should use it, and how to avoid the common mistakes that can hurt your application more than help. He also explains how to think about resumes in the context of your application and how the smartest students use every part of the application to support their overall narrative. Key Takeaways: It's 300 Words—Use Them Strategically: The Additional Info section is no longer a backup personal statement. It's for critical context only. Don't use it to repeat your resume or cram in extra accomplishments—use it to clarify, explain, or add value. Framing Matters: Ask yourself—what am I trying to communicate? Does this support my overall application strategy, or distract from it? Resumes Are a Separate Tool: Many schools allow uploads in their supplements. Keep it clean, relevant, and under two pages. A well-structured resume can fill in the gaps—but only if it's thoughtful and well-organized. Less Is More: The strongest applications are curated, not crammed. This is your chance to be intentional and show maturity in your self-presentation.  Are you addicted to “more” and missing your life? I brought Courtney Carver on not just for you, but for me too. Because if you're like me—a climber, a high achiever—you probably feel that slowing down means you're falling behind. But what if I told you that you're not broken, and you don't need “more” to be enough? In this conversation, Courtney and I get honest about what it really means to rest first, to stop chasing a finish line you can't even define, and to start living here instead of waiting for “there.”  We talk about the moments when your body starts rejecting your pace, your aggression, and your addiction to constant movement. I share what it felt like to sit by the ocean yet never look at it because I was glued to my phone, and how leaving that phone inside during a cigar break changed everything for me. Courtney shares the small, practical shifts that allowed her to simplify her life without blowing it up—and why rest isn't just sleep, but the small choices that allow you to reclaim your energy without guilt.  We also get into why so many of us—especially achievers—avoid slowing down, and how we attach our identity to “more.” Courtney's take? You're not broken, you just need to redefine what enough looks like for you. We also talk about the hidden cost of constant advice-giving and how letting go of regret can unlock the energy you're leaking into the past so you can move forward with more clarity and peace. Why rest should come first—not last—and how this fuels better performance. How to take small, practical steps to simplify without losing your edge. Why your addiction to “more” might be stealing your peace and focus. How leaving your phone behind, even for an hour, can transform your presence. Letting go of regret so you can move forward without dragging the past with you.   Listen, I know you're busy. I know you've got goals. I do too. But what if you could climb without burning out? What if you could actually enjoy the life you're working so hard to build?Key Takeaways:It's time to stop living for a “someday” that never comes. This conversation will help you create space to enjoy the life you're fighting for. Share this with someone who needs it—and as always, MAX OUT.

What if your home had a soul—and a story that's quietly shaping your life behind the scenes? In this powerful episode, I'm sharing the truth about Feng Shui that most experts don't talk about. I'm Patricia, and after years of helping thousands transform their homes and lives, I've come to realize something big: Feng Shui is not just about moving furniture or placing lucky symbols—it's about understanding the energetic blueprint of your home. If you've ever wondered why things in your life feel stuck—or why everything flows in some homes and not others—this episode will shift your perspective. This isn't about perfection. It's about creating a space that truly supports you. If you're ready to tune into your home's wisdom and invite more abundance, clarity, and calm into your life, I invite you to take the next step with my Feng Shui 101 Mini Course. Your home holds magic—let's unlock it together.   Key Takeaways:  It's not a one-size-fits-all approach. Your home's energy depends on its unique shape, location, orientation, and the year it was built—just like an astrology chart. Just like people, homes have their own “birth date,” which impacts how energy flows within them. This influences everything from wealth and health to relationships and opportunities. Some homes are good for people, some for money, and others can actually block success or abundance. Understanding your home's type helps you work with the energy instead of against it. What were the key challenges and breakthroughs that shaped the BC and Ontario wine industries in the 1980s and 90s? What makes or breaks a new wine project, and why is finding the right vineyard often the most time-consuming step? What made Peter believe that Niagara-on-the-Lake could produce exceptional Chardonnay? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Ann Sperling & Peter Gamble. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Highlights What was Ann's best memory from growing up on the farm? When did Ann and Peter know that they wanted to work in the wine industry? How did Ann and Peter meet? What was the first bottle of wine Ann and Peter shared? How do Ann and Peter navigate their interwoven personal and professional lives? How do they negotiate professional disagreements, and who chooses the wine for dinner? What were the major challenges and opportunities in the BC and Ontario wine industry in the 1980s and 90s? In the early days, how did Peter envision the future of Ontario wines? What are some of the reasons certain vintages almost didn't make it into the bottle? What do you look for when considering a new project? What makes Ann and Peter different from the stereotypical flying winemakers? What were the signs that Niagara-on-the-Lake could produce exceptional Chardonnay? How has working on a small, focused vineyard impacted Ann and Peter's winemaking choices? Why must you suffer to make top-notch wines?   Key Takeaways It was in the early 80s in BC and maybe slightly before that in Ontario, that estate wineries became a thing. Prior to that, that meant there were a few really large wineries, not really making estate or single vineyards. Vineyards were a source of bulk wine for the most part. The hunt for the vineyard became a very important one. We looked at over 230 vineyards before we found one. I think everyone there was on the verge of giving up on this, thinking “Well, they're not really going to buy anything.” Because we'd get it to a certain stage, then we do soil analysis, and we weren't quite happy, or we talked to people who had made wine from the vineyard or something would come up, and we just wouldn't quite be where we wanted to be with the quality of the vineyard. I often work on the basis of paradigms, where I'll take a look at a wine sold throughout the world and say, you know, I think this could be done really well in this area. You know what it is you might be able to accomplish within the parameters that you have - the obvious things, the terroir, the exposures to soils, the temperatures in general.   About Ann Sperling & Peter Gamble Often referred to as the “power couple” of the Canadian wine industry, Peter Gamble and Ann Sperling have long pursued the pinnacles of wine quality in Canadian vineyards and wineries. Following her upbringing on her family's Okanagan Valley vineyard, Ann turned to the soil for the character and complexity of her wines. Acknowledged as a Canadian pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture, ‘terroir' was at the centre of her philosophy and she is renowned for her head winemaking roles at Malivoire, Southbrook, and Sperling Vineyards. Peter, a lifetime wine industry professional, has worked alongside Canada's most passionate winemakers to achieve greater heights with our finest appellation wines. Since 2000, Peter has provided expertise in ultra-premium winemaking operations, including: Stratus, Ravine, Benjamin Bridge and Lightfoot & Wolfville. With the purchase of a top-flight ancient Malbec planting in Mendoza, Argentina, in 2008, Ann and Peter broadened their winemaking activities, but Niagara remains their cherished home base. Current focus is on these Niagara projects: On Seven, Lailey and Stonebridge Vineyards and Dobbin Estate.         To learn more, visit https://www.nataliemaclean.com/342.

In this illuminating episode we speak with Dr. Filippa Juul. An epidemiologist and leading researcher on the impact of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) on human health. Together, we unpack what ultra-processed really means, why it's not just about calories or macros, and how these foods are stealthily contributing to the global rise in obesity, chronic illness, and food addiction. Dr. Filippa Juul is a nutritional epidemiologist and Faculty Fellow at the Department of Public Health Policy and Management at the New York University School of Global Public Health (NYU GPH). She earned her PhD in Epidemiology from NYU GPH in 2020, following a MSc in Public Health Nutrition from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and a BA in Nutrition and Dietetics from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in Spain. Dr. Juul's research focuses on improving cardiometabolic health outcomes at the population level, with a particular interest in the role of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) in diet quality, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. She utilizes large U.S. population studies to examine these associations and is also exploring the biological mechanisms underlying the impact of UPFs on cardiometabolic health.  Dr. Juul explains the NOVA classification system, dives into recent groundbreaking studies, and offers insights into why UPFs are so difficult to resist—and what we can do about it, both individually and at the policy level. Here you go friends for a Monday evening. First of all I have a celebration day and it's always nice to be able to share a happy day. But I also have decided that because so many things are changing in my life that we all need to get used to not only changing things but also changing names.  So I have a little 12 minute story that I think will be amusing and possibly helpful to you and I know that if you want to excell and do well in the challenging times before us you're gonna have to take one of my suggestions quite seriously. And here is what STOSH the robot has to say Could Everything You've Learned Be Wrong? Why I'm Changing the Name—and What That Might Mean for You Hi, I'm Stan—the Radio Man—and I've been hosting a podcast called Interesting Ideas. But here's the big news: it's time to change the name. And no, this isn't just a branding decision. It's something deeper. Something more personal. Something that might matter to you, too. Let me tell you why. A Personal Moment Sparks a Shift Today is my daughter's birthday. My youngest is turning 50. And as I reflect on that (with a bit of disbelief), I realize that life constantly changes—whether we're ready or not. Back when I was teaching high school history, I overheard one of my students tell a classmate, “It doesn't matter what the course is—it's always Husted.” That comment has stayed with me. It reminded me that no matter what label you slap on the work, if I'm involved, I bring a certain way of thinking, a certain voice, and a certain personality to the table. So when I change the name of this show, it's not about erasing the past—it's about aligning with the present. Because I've changed. The world has changed. Maybe you have, too. The Drucker Moment That Changed Everything Years ago, I read a Forbes article featuring the legendary management consultant Peter Drucker. It was the October 1998 issue. The cover headline jolted me into a new awareness: “Everything You've Learned About the New Economy Could Be Wrong.” I kept that cover. Blew it up into a poster. Used it as a constant reminder in my coaching and consulting work. Why? Because that sentence hits hard. It dares us to consider that our cherished assumptions might no longer apply. And in today's world—where everything is accelerating—this kind of thinking is more vital than ever. Why the Name Must Change The name Interesting Ideas has served us well. But now, I'm searching for something more fitting. Maybe something like: • Instigating Ideas • Innovative Ideas • Inconvenient Ideas • Irritating Ideas • Inspirational Ideas I want a name that reflects not just curiosity, but courage. Because that's what it takes to admit, “I was wrong.” It takes maturity to grow up, not just grow older. And if you've ever changed your mind, you know what I mean. When we realize that what we used to know might no longer be true, we're not falling apart—we're waking up. And that's where real wisdom begins. What This Podcast Is Really About Here's how I see the journey: • Ideas lead to • Insight, which leads to • Influence, which creates • Impact, and if you're lucky, • Income—not just financial, but relational, spiritual, and personal wealth. We're entering what I call The Impact Zone. If you don't make an impact today, you may already be invisible. And I believe we were made to leave an imprint—to leave behind more than we take. Key Takeaways • It's okay to change your mind. Growth means rethinking what we thought we knew. • Impact matters. In this fast-changing world, we must move from ideas to action. • Names are not sacred. What matters is the substance, not the label. • Humility is power. Saying, “I was wrong,” might be the wisest thing you'll ever do. • Wisdom is the goal. Not information, not even knowledge—but wisdom. A Red Plate Day—and a Call to You When our kids were young, we had a tradition: on birthdays or special occasions, we'd bring out a red plate that read, *This is your special day*. It was a way of saying, “You matter.” Today, as I honor my daughter's milestone, I realize that this is my red plate day, too. And maybe yours. So here's my call to action: • Rethink something you've always believed. • Be willing to be wrong—so you can become wiser. • Give me your thoughts on what this new name could be. • And above all, aim to leave a legacy of impact, wisdom, and blessings. Because as much as everything may change, one thing doesn't: our calling to bless others at every turn. Thanks for listening. Let's continue the journey—under a new name, but with the same spirit. Until next time… from whatever this show will soon be called. Blessings always, Stan the Radio Man

He discusses how word of mouth and a strong brand has allowed them to become a leader in their space and also gives insight into Sift's top source for demand generation.Key Takeaways:It is riskier not to take risks. Marketers need to be willing to try something unconventional. If it fails, the world goes on. Giving your customers access to your data, if it answers important questions for them, can be a key driver of demand. Understand what your customers are curious about and what questions they are asking. If you can find a way to provide answers, the ROI will be significant. Quote:  ”Those that aren't taking risks are the ones taking risks, is the way I would look at this. Like we have to take risks -you know, it's gotten so noisy and some of the tried and true tactics like organic search, right, which is completely flipped on its head right now. Every CMO has a responsibility, anyone in marketing really, has a responsibility to really rethink the logic for what they're doing and take some risks.”Episode Timestamps: *(02:29) The Trust Tree: 10 years of CMO experience*(09:19) The Playbook: Answering your customers biggest questions*(38:24) The Dust Up: To create a category or not *(42:32) Quick Hits: Armen's quick hitsSponsor:Pipeline Visionaries is brought to you by Qualified.com. Simon discusses the concept of ethical property investing, emphasising the importance of creating a win-win situation for both investors and motivated sellers. He highlights the various reasons why individuals may need to sell their properties at a discount, such as financial difficulties, medical issues, or personal circumstances. Through real-life examples, Simon illustrates how understanding the seller's needs and providing genuine solutions can lead to mutually beneficial outcomes. KEY TAKEAWAYS It's crucial to recognise that motivated sellers often view their property as a burden rather than an asset. They may be facing financial difficulties, personal issues, or deadlines that make selling their property a priority. Successful property investing should focus on creating a win-win situation where both the seller and the investor benefit. This involves genuinely helping sellers solve their problems while also achieving a profitable outcome. Engaging in open conversations with sellers is essential. By asking the right questions and listening to their needs, investors can better understand the seller's situation and provide tailored solutions. There are unethical practices in property investing that can harm sellers. It's important to maintain integrity and avoid taking advantage of vulnerable individuals, ensuring that all transactions are fair and transparent. Building trust and providing genuine help can lead to referrals and future opportunities. Positive interactions can create good karma, which may result in more business in the long run, reinforcing the idea that ethical behaviour in investing pays off. BEST MOMENTS "We need to ask great questions, listen to what they say, respond and have this conversation... finding out what's most important to them." "If we can find people and prevent them from being repossessed... then that's much better than facing the inevitable of being repossessed." "We want to have this win-win, where we're helping them and also we're benefiting as well." "If you put some good karma out there, the good karma will come back to you many, many times over." In the world of professional sports, athletes face the constant fear of injury. While the physical impact is clear—strains, tears, and breaks—the mental and emotional effects can be just as severe. The fear of never returning to peak performance can cloud an athlete's confidence and mental health, making recovery a long, challenging process. Injury not only disrupts an athlete's career but also challenges their identity. The road to recovery requires physical healing and emotional resilience, as athletes wrestle with frustration and self-doubt. However, many emerge stronger, learning to push through both physical and mental barriers. Overcoming the fear of injury means accepting it as part of the journey. By confronting and working through this fear, athletes can return to their sport more prepared, confident, and focused on what lies ahead. Jency Riley Jr. is a student-athlete and passionate storyteller majoring in Sports Media and Journalism. With a strong background in sports and a deep love for media, he is dedicated to blending his athletic experience with his skills in journalism to offer fresh perspectives on the sports world. Lyn welcomes back Byron and Margaret McKie, a couple known for their candid discussions about relationships. Together, they delve into the complexities of resolving conflict with your partner, sharing insights from their 27 years of marriage. The McKies emphasise the importance of viewing conflicts as challenges to be tackled together rather than battles to be won individually. They explore the differences in how men and women typically handle conflict, highlighting the need for effective communication and emotional understanding. KEY TAKEAWAYS It's essential to approach conflicts with the mindset that it's not about winning or losing but about resolving the issue together. When only one partner wins, both lose; true success comes from tackling problems as a team. Different communication styles can arise from gender differences. Men may prefer directness, while women might seek emotional safety. Recognising these differences can help couples navigate conflicts more effectively. Past experiences can influence how individuals react during conflicts. One partner may project emotions based on their history, while the other may not relate and so respond in a different way. Understanding each other's backgrounds can foster empathy and improve communication. When verbal communication becomes heated, writing letters can be an effective way to express feelings and thoughts without provoking an immediate emotional charge. This method allows for uninterupted clearer communication and helps prevent misunderstandings. BEST MOMENTS "When only one of you wins, you both lose. If you solve the problem together, you both win." "I need to say the same thing I said to my friend, but just in a different tone or a different way." "A lot of times, we found that we're saying the same things just in different ways." "You have to utilise more of your feminine energy." "Conflict is good. That's where change comes from. That's where growth comes from." He explores effective email strategies, emphasizing the power of short, curiosity-driven messages over long, detailed pitches. He also discusses pricing from the buyer's perspective, highlighting how perceived value—rather than just function—drives purchasing decisions.   Why you have to check out today's podcast: Learn proven strategies for grabbing attention in cold calls and emails, using brand credibility and psychological triggers like FOMO. Discover how to price based on what buyers truly value, rather than just cost or features, using real-life analogies. Get practical tips on structuring sales conversations to keep prospects engaged without sounding like a typical salesperson.   “Try and understand the value in the eyes of your buyer. I think far too many times as vendors, we think there's intrinsic value because it costs us much to produce or we think it looks like that. It's trying to understand from a buying perspective, what is the value you're providing.” - Mark Herring   Topics Covered: 01:29 - How his journey from development to product marketing led him to pricing 03:41 - How his early pricing research focused on how customers would use a product rather than explicitly asking about the problem it solved 04:59 -  To what is the short tenure of CMOs in B2B and consumer goods attributed to 06:25 - Explaining what a pipeline is and how pipeline generation involves value demonstration 10:38 - Comparing pipeline to running a marathon, emphasizing that while MQLs and SQLs are useful stepping stones, the ultimate goal is generating real sales opportunities 12:02 - Differentiating a pipeline from a SQL 14:18 - Demonstrating how a successful cold outreach combines multiple touchpoints 18:57 - How to make prospects more receptive in a cold call  21:13 - Why he uses big brand names as conversation openers in cold calls rather than starting with a value statement 22:27 - What an effective cold email should be 24:42 - Highlighting  the importance of A/B testing cold emails and continuously refining outreach strategies to improve open rates 25:55 - Mark's best pricing advice   Key Takeaways: “It's cold because you've never had the interaction, but usually they've interacted somewhere with you. It's like they might have seen you at an event, or they might have seen some of your outreach to you already and going, ‘Okay, I'll give this guy a bone.'” - Mark Herring “One of the sales guys was talking about this [cold calls] at the conference we were at together, and I just loved it. And he is like, ‘Don't over research, because there's never a good time to know everything.' Because you got to keep on dialing.” - Mark Herring “You can't stop doing it [cold outreach] because it's like getting dice and trying to get the six, the more you throw it, the better chance you're going to get to the six.” - Mark Herring “I lead [cold call] with brands, not with value. And when you do that type of thing, they're then shocked going, ‘Oh, he didn't do a sales pitch on me. He's asking me about these companies. Well, maybe it is something interesting.'” - Mark Herring   People/Resources Mentioned: FedX: https://www.fedex.com/en-us/home.html UPS: https://www.ups.com/us/en/home   Connect with Mark Herring: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/herringmark/ Email: mark.herring@hivemq.com   Connect with Mark Stiving: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stiving/ Email: mark@impactpricing.com

In this episode, we chat with James Fryer, an experienced mining underwriter for Inigo, who are global specialists in high-risk, high-capacity insurance and reinsurance lines – serving some of the world’s largest commercial and industrial enterprises including the mining and resources sector. James explains more about the insurance industry, what mining companies could do better from a risk prospective, how insurance companies can improve their negative reputations, what are the current risk challenges in our industry, and what makes a good mining client from an insurance perspective. KEY TAKEAWAYS It's crucial for mining companies to fully understand the details of their insurance policies, including what is covered and what is not. Misunderstandings often lead to conflicts during claims. Insurance for mining companies should be bespoke, as each mining operation has unique risks and challenges. Insurers work closely with mining companies to develop tailored insurance products that meet their specific needs. Insurance companies need to adopt a more proactive approach to risk management by learning from past losses and providing clarity in policy wording. This helps ensure that mining companies have certainty in their coverage when losses occur. The mining industry faces new risks due to technological advancements, such as automation and electrification. Insurers must adapt their policies to address these emerging risks while also leveraging technology for better risk assessment and monitoring. A successful partnership between mining companies and insurers is built on trust and transparency. Long-term relationships allow both parties to better understand each other's risks and needs, ultimately leading to more effective risk management and support during claims. BEST MOMENTS "Insurance is just another method of risk management. It's that transfer of risk from the company to a third party, in this case being the insurance company." "Not every mine is the same. Our job is to work with insurance brokers and the mining companies to develop something that is suitable for them." "Insurance is very reactive. There are those losses that will occur that a 60-page insurance wording contract just isn't able to respond to." "The best insurance policy is one that you will never have to claim on because it means that you haven't had that financial loss." Understanding HMO Licensing and HMO Planning Requirements

Simon delves into the crucial distinctions between HMO (House in Multiple Occupation) licensing and planning conditions, emphasising their separate roles in property investment. Simon highlights the importance of creating high-end co-living spaces to attract better tenants and maximise income. He explains the licensing requirements for HMOs, including the number of unrelated occupants and room size regulations, while also addressing safety standards that must be met. Additionally, Simon discusses the complexities of planning permissions, particularly in areas with Article 4 directions, and offers insights on how to navigate these challenges effectively. KEY TAKEAWAYS It's crucial to differentiate between HMO licensing and planning conditions, as they are separate aspects of managing HMO properties. Licensing pertains to the number of unrelated tenants, while planning relates to the classification of the property. Generally, a property needs a license if it houses five or more unrelated individuals, but some councils may require a license for three or more. Always check local council regulations for specific requirements. Minimum room sizes for licensed HMOs vary by council. The national guideline for single rooms is 6.51 square meters, but some councils may require larger sizes. It's essential to verify these requirements to avoid issues when applying for a license. In areas with an Article 4 direction, converting a C3 residential property to a C4 HMO requires planning permission. However, if the concentration of HMOs is below a certain threshold (e.g., 20%), it may still be possible to obtain permission. BEST MOMENTS "If you're going to do HMOs, it's very important to make sure you do high-level, co-living HMOs." "A lot of councils interpret the HMO licensing rules in their own way... some councils take the strict definition of an HMO." "If you have an en suite where the room has its own private shower, toilet and hand basin, the space for the en suite does not count towards the floor space of the room." "In many areas, there is an oversupply of the very average HMOs I talked about earlier on." Thanks for tuning back in to Leaving the Nest, dear listeners! Of course, I am not actually setting you up for failure; instead, we will focus on what NOT to do when starting a new job so that you can avoid making costly mistakes right out of the gate. It's so important to make a positive impression, and I am using this episode to share some practical tips on how to do just that! From being punctual to managing breaks, I highlight the key factors that can either make or break your success in those critical first days. Showing up to work on time is more important than you might think, and I explain why those extra few minutes could set you apart. I also discuss reliability and the importance of communicating openly with your employer if something goes wrong, whether it be a family emergency or a sick day. (Trust me, employers absolutely notice these things!) Dr. John Hutton: Reading to Babies Helps Their Brains

Critically Speaking

In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. John Hutton discuss the impact of early reading exposure on brain development in infants and young children. He explains that babies are born with 100 billion brain cells, each with around 1,000 connections and that these connections are shaped by experiences. Dr. Hutton emphasizes the importance of a nurturing home literacy environment, which includes regular reading routines and interactive reading. He also addresses the negative effects of excessive screen time on brain development, particularly in preschoolers, and advocates for reducing screen usage to allow for more real-world engagement. Additionally, he highlights programs like Reach Out and Read and Dolly Parton's Imagination Library that aim to increase access to books for children from underprivileged backgrounds.    Key Takeaways: It takes a long time for the human brain to develop compared to other animals. Humans are uniquely more sensitive to experiences in their environment than other organisms because of this long development process. The Home Literacy Environment can be divided into quantitative (such as the number of books and amount of time spent reading) and qualitative (such as questions asked, format of books, interest in reading, etc.) components. There is no “reading network” built-in to the brain. If kids aren't taught to read, they are not going to just magically know how to read. Do your best to form your own routines, and try to make reading fun, enjoyable, and nurturing.  Kids want to emulate their parents. If we want them to use less screen time, as adults, we must also have less screen time.    "Books, more than anything, are a catalyst that brings grown-ups and kids together to exchange language, to exchange emotions, to show love and affection, and that can be a source of nurturing for all these different aspects of development that are related to that experience." —  Dr. John Hutton   Episode References:  Read Aloud 15 Minutes: https://readaloud.org/  Reach Out and Read: https://reachoutandread.org/  Dolly Parton's Imagination Library: https://imaginationlibrary.com/usa/  Dr. John Hutton Introduces the SHARE STEP Method for Reading with Young Children: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuQhnbrwutw    Connect with Dr. John Hutton: Professional Bio: https://profiles.utsouthwestern.edu/profile/226447/john-hutton.html  Twitter: https://x.com/drjohnhutton  Books: https://www.bluemanateepress.com/our-authors#/dr-john-hutton/    Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net   Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Adrian Mendoza, founder and general partner of Mendoza Ventures, whose inspirational journey sees him go from first generation Mexican-American who turned a successful tech-exit into a platform for empowering others. He's a living embodiment of the power of perseverance and vision. On this episode, Adrian shares his insights on everything from pitfalls to how to deal with corporate life, and building corporate innovation lab to the art of securing strategic investments. KEY TAKEAWAYS It was very rare to find an operator/founder that was also an investor in 2015, but we had a lot of experience meeting people with domain expertise who would come to us because they'd invested in us through funds. VC was a black box that would never connect to founders. We theorised there was incredible potential success in breaking that black box open and connecting incredible investors that had operational and domain expertise with founders. Venture has been very localised. When we first looked at the landscape we realised there was an opportunity to find incredible talent that wasn't the kids that went to Oxford or Stanford because you're missing out on everything in between. One of our first investments was two Latinos that were working at RSA security and left because they had an idea, they didn't have Ivy League educations, they were domain experts. That company returned 10x in 5 months back to us. For us, DE&I is not just black, brown and female, but also age diversity, veterans, those coming from rural areas. If you're going to look at equity and inclusion it can just be within a sub-segment because then it's incredibly hard to find talent. We want to find talent no matter where it is and what it looks like. In order to create the best outcomes you cannot be a passive investor, you have to help find customers, investors, help mentor these individuals because they've never run a company with 80-100 people before, help them find the talent and the ways into mainstream financial institutions or corporates.  BEST MOMENTS ‘No one looked like us, there were no women or Latinos writing venture cheques, we didn't know that we were one of the first Latinx Venture Funds on the East Coast until individuals in private equity told us.' ‘There's incredible talents at corporates in rural areas in middle America that no one's touching that is out there having ideas and building companies. We invest in this talent because we look like that talent.' ‘60% of California is Latino, if we're looking at being representative of that area then 60% of the capital should be going to Latinos. Most states are 50% women, 50% of capital should be going to women.' ‘Our references aren't just the investors, they're the founders that we backed and those that we've had exits with.' ABOUT THE GUEST Adrian Mendoza is the founder and general partner at Mendoza Ventures which is both Latinx and woman-owned and the first Latinx-founded VC fund on the east coast. His firm focuses on investments in Fintech, AI, and Cybersecurity, with diversity playing an important role in their investment decisions—about 80% of their portfolio consists of startups led by immigrants, people of colour, and women. Since its founding seven years ago, Mendoza Ventures has raised two funds and had two successful exits. The firm is currently raising its third fund, a $100M fintech fund anchored by Bank of America, focused on early growth funding rounds. In 2022, Axios Magazine listed Adrian as one of the five most influential people in Boston and the LA Times honoured Adrian as a DEI visionary as one of California's most prominent game-changers and thought leaders in the business world today. Adrian is also a regular contributor on CNBC on the state of Venture capital in the US and the firm has recently been covered in Forbes, Bloomberg, and The Boston Globe.
