Tar éis bás a athar, gheall Séamus Ó Tuama go gcríochnódh sé féin an leabhar a bhí tosaithe ag a dhaid, Diarmuid. Leabhar ar stair Bhéal Feirste atá ann ó pheirspictíocht phoblachtánach, le scéal muintir Uí Thuama féin agus an t-eispéireas a bhí acu féin fite fuaite le stair chorraitheach na cathrach féin. Leanann an leabhar turas na clainne, ó fhear óg Corcaíoch a bhog ó thuaidh i ndiaidh an Ghorta Mhóir, tríd na pogroms le linn na 1920ídí, agus na Trioblóidí a lean, go dtí Séamus agus a hathair Diarmuid agus an ról a bhí acu i réabhlóid na Gaeilge sa chathair. Bhí an-aithne ag Gaeil Bhéal Feirste ar mhuintir Uí Thuama, go háirithe mar gheall ar obair Dhiarmuid mar phríomhoide Bhunscoil Phobal Feirste, an chéad scoil lán-Ghaeilge i dTuaisceart Éireann. Ar Seachtain, labhraíonn Séamus Ó Tuama faoina leabhar úr ‘Béal Feirste: Belfast' agus faoin saol sa chathair a mhúnlaigh a mhuintir. Cé gur scéal é atá lán de choimhlint agus de thráma thar na glúnta, feiceann Séamus toradh dearfach sa lá atá inniu ann i bhfoirm na hathbheochana cultúrtha agus teanga atá ag bláthú i mBéal Feirste. We've got some serious issues: Iran is too real of a country to ignore, and Saudi Arabia is becoming a real country in that it suddenly can't find $300m to fund the LIV Golf tournament in Louisiana. Because something happened regarding the thing that it uses to make all its money from? We also dig into Israel's occupation of Lebanon as “means of thwarting a peace deal” and as default function in a state run by people who need a war happening to stay out of prison. But don't worry, we keep it really optimistic. Get more from Séamus here! And also check out the Turbulence podcast here! Get more TF episodes each week by subscribing to our Patreon here! I'm delighted to speak with Dr Séamus Harvey and Dr Chin Wei Ong in this week's episode. We discuss a mental well-being screening process which was implemented at an elite youth football academy developed by Séamus, Chin and colleagues. Séamus is a Postdoctoral Researcher with the NetwellCASALA research centre at Dundalk Institute of Technology. Séamus researches digital health and health psychology as well as sport and exercise psychology. Séamus also lectures on Dundalk Institute of Technology's (DkIT's) Health and Physical Activity programme. Séamus completed his MSc. in Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology at Ulster University and a PhD in Sport Psychology at Bangor University. Prior to his PhD, Séamus worked as a Research Assistant with Liverpool John Moores University. Chin is a behavioural scientist and consultant with 15+ years' experience across elite sport, research, and organisational contexts. Chin's work focuses on how individuals and teams perform under pressure, and how organisations can design systems that enable sustainable performance. Chin previously worked across a global network of elite environments, designing systems that integrated performance, talent development, wellbeing, and risk. These are challenges that closely mirror those faced by organisations operating in complex, high-stakes contexts. Chin is particularly interested in helping organisations move beyond measuring talent to truly understanding it; using that insight to build stronger leaders, more effective teams, and resilient performance cultures.

Lucy Fenwick Elliott speaks to the team behind California Schemin' including director and co-star James McAvoy, as well as the films' stars Samuel Bottomley, Séamus McLean Ross, Rebekah Murrell and Lucy Halliday. Based on an outrageous true story, CALIFORNIA SCHEMIN' is a wild ride through ambition, identity, and the high-stakes world of musical make-believe. In the early 2000's, Dundee rappers Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd were talented, hungry, but dismissed for sounding "too Scottish" to make it in hip hop. So they hatched an audacious plan: fake American identities, re-record their tracks with Californian accents, and hustle their way into the heart of the UK music industry as “Silibil N' Brains”—childhood friends of D12 and stars-in-the-making. To their shock, the plan works. Record deals, media buzz, and gigs with hip hop legends follow. But as their deception deepens, the pressure mounts and cracks begin to show. How long can you live the dream when it's built on a lie? With bold humour, raw emotion, and a defiant spirit, CALIFORNIA SCHEMIN' is a love letter to outsiders, underdogs, and the pursuit of fame—but asks, at what cost. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Séamus begins by talking about his work, setting ongoing events in context, and reflects on the differences between public discourse in English versus Arabic-language spaces. Toggling between contemporary headlines and historical texts, Séamus, Abby, and Patrick reflect on how material realities and geopolitical antagonisms have interacted with competing fantasies, traumatic memories, and logics of identification to produce our current juncture. What ensues is an earnest and searching conversation about dynamics of family, ethnicity, religion, race, and nationality; intergenerational experiences of historical traumas; identification with the aggressor; repression, resistance, and enactment as material and libidinal concepts; nationalism, chauvinism, and settler colonialism; Israeli-US relations as a “feedback loop”; the politics of language; the advocacy of diaspora communities; the difficulties of talking about what's obvious; and much more.Have you noticed that Freud is back? Former FBI agent Séamus McElearney, author of Flipping Capo: How the FBI Dismantled the Real Sopranos, walks through the case that shattered the DeCavalcante crime family. He explains the mob's quiet tax on regular people via unions—no-show jobs, pension skims, and an asbestos local run by guys who couldn't pass the test (so they had someone take it for them). He also gets into the overlap with The Sopranos and contrasts real life with the one premise he says flatly wouldn't happen: a boss talking mob business to a shrink. Plus, the Renee Good shooting and the way "objectively reasonable" ends up riding on an officer's story; and in the Spiel, Iran's protests and "semi-official" media; and how the fake Fed investigation is Trump's own attempt at an autocrat-like crackdown. Welcome back, everyone, for the conclusion of my interview with Author and retired FBI Special Agent Seamus McElearney. Séamus McElearney began his distinguished career with the FBI in 1998, joining Squad C-10 of the New York Organized Crime Branch. Tasked with investigating the Bonanno and DeCavalcante crime families—infamously known as “the real Sopranos.” In December 1999, he was assigned to arrest Anthony Capo, a violent soldier in the DeCavalcante family, as part of a sweeping indictment. Not only did he safely execute the arrest, but he also achieved a historic breakthrough: persuading Capo to become the first made member in the family’s century-long history to cooperate with law enforcement. This unprecedented move triggered a domino effect of cooperation that ultimately led to the dismantling of the DeCavalcante family. In all, 71 defendants were convicted, and 11 murders were solved. Following this six-year investigation, Séamus was promoted to lead Squad C-38, overseeing the Colombo crime family. Under his leadership, the squad dismantled the Colombos through a series of operations—including spearheading the largest Mafia takedown in FBI history. As Supervisor, Séamus oversaw investigations that led to the conviction of more than 200 defendants and the resolution of 20 murders. Throughout his career as an Agent and Supervisor, Séamus helped convict ten Mafia bosses, recover five bodies, and solve the murder of an NYPD officer. He was part of historic FBI teams that dismantled three organized crime families—an achievement no one else can claim. Seamus is also the author of the popular book, Flipping Capo: How the FBI Dismantled the Real Sopranos. I’m a fan of the TV show The Sopranos, so it was amazing listening to Seamus explain how the “Real Sopranos” operated and how they were dismantled and brought to justice by Seamus and his team. Please enjoy my conversation with Seamus! In today’s episode, we discuss: · How he got Capo to flip. · Capo was a soldier in the mob. What is the rank system of the mob? · What is involved in a ‘made man’ ceremony? (Kissing rings, burning saints, etc...) · Why are we so fascinated with mobsters? · What is the FBI’s role in WITSEC? · How do you keep a rat safe if they are in jail or out on bail? · 9/11, how the FBI changed after that day. · How long did it take to put together the case against the DeCavalcante crime family? · How did the DeCavalcante crime family coexist with the five New York crime families? · Is it true that old-school mobsters didn’t mess with women or children? When did this change? · The Sopranos. What did Hollywood get right and wrong about mob life regarding The Sopranos? · The advice he would give to someone who wants to be an FBI agent. · Sylvester Stallone’s series, The Tulsa King. Denzember concludes as Journalist and host of the Turbulence podcast Séamus Malekafzali returns to the show to discuss Edward Zwick's 1998 geopolitical thriller The Siege, a film about a Muslim terrorist cell wreaking havoc on New York City, the resultant fear it stokes, and the vidictive results of martial law being enforced in an American city. Largely lost to time as an artifact of The End of History, the film nonetheless rings with a startling prescience as a pre-9/11 document of Hollywood's casual anti-Arab sentiments (even among well-meaning liberal sects), and trust in American institutions to disavow bad actors and preserve democracy. We begin by dissecting the films amorphous, byzantine, and *totally fabricated* understanding of Middle Eastern geopolitics, and how its obfuscations function as a tool of propaganda, making the threat of Muslim extremism feel omnipresent and unknowable. Then, we consider how the film contends with imperial blowback, individuating it as mistakes by discrete actors rather than the guiding policy of America's geopolitical meddling across the globe. Finally, we reckon with the film's countless contradictions, its liberal posturing toward the "right" kind of wariness toward extremism, and its unconscious buttressing of the same ideologies that lead to fascist persecution of The Other. Séamus - now host of the Turbulence podcast about the post-American imperial age - joins us to talk about the ceasefire in Gaza that wasn't, as well as the whole-of-government effort to rehabilitate football hooliganism. Also, we look at a fun new way to get carbon dioxide into your body. Check out Séamus's new show - https://turbulencepod.substack.com.
Séamus joins us to talk about Trump's proposed “Gaza peace plan” and what horrific policies it would actually entail in practice, as well as the Democratic Party's desperate attempts to triangulate on the issue. We also wade into the increasing possibility of regime change in Venezuela as well as ICE's pillaging of Chicago apartment buildings. On the lighter side, we talk about Bari Weiss being given the keys to CBS news and Tyler Cowen's Humbert Humbert-esque ode to an AI actress.
