Johnson C. Smith, which beat West Virginia Wesleyan 49-6 in its Sept. 2 season opener, last accomplished the feat in 2013. Head coach Maurice Flowers is using history as inspiration for the Golden Bulls, who haven't posted a winning record since 2012.
Carol joins us to talk about her unique path in the coaching profession. How unique? Not withstanding she grew up in Jamaica and attended New York Tech in the US, she wasn't a track coach for more than half her career as she focused on Information Systems, computer networking, and the like for such companies as ABC News and JP Morgan Chase. Her career path took a turn when she moved to Charlotte and walked into Providence Day HS and asked "Here's my resume, do you have any jobs?". She took this opportunity to coach Field Hockey and Track and Field which led to many state titles and successful athlete such as Anna Cockrell. Carol sits down to talk about recruiting, motherhood, program expectations, transitioning from high school to college coaching and more in this exciting fun interview on the Gill Connections podcast. Fans have to suffer the consequences of the HBCU Combine poorly promoting the results of the event, and Johnson C Smith defeating Fayetteville State is the first upset of the CIAA tournament. Howard's loss to Morgan State was irrelevant because Norfolk State also lost. HBCU combine has done a poor job of promoting the results of the event, and the fans are the ones who must suffer the consequences. I understand the point of the event is for the players, but fans want to feel included as well. There's no reason finding the list of participants or results should be difficult to find. Johnson C Smith defeating Fayetteville State is the first upset of the CIAA tournament. The Golden Bulls won because of physicality and a bizarre 4th quarter. Howard's loss to Morgan State was irrelevant because Norfolk State also lost. Still, this was a great game that saw MSU explode for 61 2nd half points. That's more than they scored all game the 1st time these teams faced off. Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

Benedict College QB Eric Phoenix has entered the transfer portal, and Alonzo Hampton has a track and field story that sets the tone for his era at University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Virginia State's defense has had 3 games where they didn't play to their defensive standard against Johnson C Smith, Virginia Union, and now Shaw. Benedict College QB Eric Phoenix has entered the transfer portal. His goodbye graphic was excellent because it showed gratitude while also showcasing what he's accomplished for the interested schools. Alonzo Hampton has a track and field story that sets the tone for his era at University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. The morale of the story is “find a way” and that's the attitude he'll bring to the team. Virginia State's defense has had 3 games where they didn't play to their defensive standard. Locked On Tar Heels - Daily Podcast On North Carolina Tar Heels Football & Basketball
The North Carolina Tar Heels dominated Johnson C. Smith last Friday evening in their lone exhibition game of the 2022-23 season. Caleb Love led all scorers with 20 points, followed by Pete Nance's 19. Armando Bacot had 20 rebounds in just 23 minutes of action. Four Tar Heels sat out the game, including RJ Davis, Puff Johnson, Jalen Washington, and Justin McKoy. Coach Hubert Davis expects to have his entire starting lineup of Davis, Love, Leaky Black, Bacot, and Nance ready to go for Monday's season-opener against UNC-Wilmington. Starting in RJ Davis' place was sophomore D'Marco Dunn who is showing signs of being a far-bigger contributor to the team than most people expected during the offseason. If Dunn and freshman Seth Trimble can provide legitimate, reliable back-up minutes in the backcourt, RJ Davis and Caleb Love should be all the more effective in their minutes. Coach Hubert Davis expects to have his entire starting lineup of Davis, Love, Leaky Black, Bacot, and Nance ready to go for Monday's season-opener against UNC-Wilmington.Starting in RJ Davis' place was sophomore D'Marco Dunn who is showing signs of being a far-bigger contributor to the team than most people expected during the offseason. If Dunn and freshman Seth Trimble can provide legitimate, reliable back-up minutes in the backcourt, RJ Davis and Caleb Love should be all the more effective in their minutes.Follow the show: Locked On Tar Heels (YouTube) Locked On Tar Heels (LinkTree) Locked On Tar Heels (Twitter) Locked On Tar Heels (Instagram) Isaac Schade (Twitter) Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!SweatBlockIf you or someone you love is experiencing embarrassing sweat or odor try Sweatblock. The Howard Alumni Movemakers Podcast hosted by Joshua Mercer
Gerald L. Hector, CPA is currently the Executive Vice President and Chief Business Officer for Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA. He has been in the role for approximately four months where he oversees a majority of all the business and administrative functions of the college to include, human resources, information technology, business office, student accounts, auxiliary services, and facilities. Prior to joining Morehouse, he was the Vice President for Financial Affairs and University Treasurer for Ivy League Cornell University. An institution that has an annual operating budget of $4.5 billion. There he was responsible for the controller's office, tax office, payroll, sponsored financial services, cash management, risk management, office of policy, and purchasing and procurement. While there he was also active in other groups around judicial mentoring, and race and diversity workshops and presentation to his division. His career as a financial and administrative executive goes back to similar roles as the Vice President of Finance and Administration at Ithaca College where he implemented a number of firsts for the college that included the implementation of the Zero Based Budgeting concept, along with creating a monthly CFO discussion series entitled “Dollars and $ense.” He created a ten-year master plan for the campus, along with deferred maintenance strategic plans for both facilities and information technology. Both plans were firsts for the college. In addition to his regular duties he became known in several circles for his commitment and work around race, diversity and inclusion in 2015, when tensions arose on college campuses across the country. He was featured on several webcasts and podcasts during that time. The model he implemented to have difficult dialogues has been adopted by his former colleagues at other institutions. He has also held the Vice President of Business and Finance role at Johnson C. Smith University, an HBCU that was guided through to a successful reaccreditation process in 2006 with no findings or recommendations. There he also created several financial firsts like establishing the college's first ever unrestricted cash reserve of $10 million. He went to Johnson C. Smith after having served as the Corporate Controller for the United Negro College Fund, Inc. While at UNCF he was responsible for putting together the financial budgets and framework for the $1 billion Gates Millennium Scholars program. A program that was designed through the generosity of Bill and Melinda Gates to provide 20,000 minority students with a college education. Prior to UNCF, he was a public accountant with Deloitte and Touche where he served independent power plants and nonprofit organizations. An honors graduate from Howard University's School of Business with a baccalaureate degree in accounting, he also holds a Masters in Christian Thought from the Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary. He weaves both his financial acumen and spiritual grounding to mentor and engage a host of individuals on the issues of today. His lunchtime lecture in the fall of 2018 at Cornell University around “Faith and Finance” continues to be an inspiration to individuals who are keen on trying to understand the interaction of how the world we live in today presents opportunities for reflection and healing. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/humovemakers/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/humovemakers/support
