Why avoiding sport's undoubted riches and ensuing fame - and remaining grounded and humble - can be a blessing.Laura was the world's number one squash player and its World Champion. However, squash doesn't get the attention of some other sports, and is overlooked by the International Olympic Committee time and again.Using her mantra 'life can only be understood backwards', Laura has come to see that avoiding the fame and fortune associated with being World Champion in certain other sport's can be a blessing.Laura talks about not losing your identity in what you do, choosing to be outside your comfort zone continually and seeking feedback - even when it is painful to receive. We discuss 'ego' - what it is and how to keep it in check and why short term pain for long term gain is often well worth it.Laura's book is called 'All in: Becoming World Champion'**Follow me on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieon instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/And for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - full of useful lifehacks and 'nuggets' head to simonmundie.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Former world number 1, world champion and current world 7, Laura Massaro made a huge impression on episode 38. Her run of consecutive super series titles came to an end this year, but nothing to be ashamed of; her career speaks for itself. After defeating Nicol David for the first time and in doing so winning her first major title in 2011, Laura really never looked back. We talk about staying fit and healthy as she approaches her mid-30s, playing in the shadow of Nicol David for so many years, and the dynamic relationship with her husband/coach Danny. Enjoy!!
In this episode, David is joined by John Kiely. John is a Senior lecturer in Elite Performance at the Institute of Coaching and Performance, within the University of Central Lancashire (although the role doesn’t require any lecturing). Instead he works on a one-to-one basis tutoring professional doctoral candidates —primarily experienced mid-career professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds (sporting, rehabilitation, academic, military services and so on) focused on driving innovation within their specific domain of expertise. As an event coach, he has worked with many combat athletes and coached a Paralympic medallist, World indoor champion and European record holder in track & field. He was the Head of Strength & Conditioning for UK Athletics for a number of years, and subsequently their Athletic conditioning manager; in these roles he was intimately involved in the performance preparation of a large number of Olympic, World, and European medallists. In 2013, he worked extensively with squash player Laura Massaro as she won both World and British Open titles. From 2014 to 2016 he was contracted to work with the Irish rugby squad prior to and during competitive championships, including the 2014 and 2015 6 Nations winning campaigns and the 2015 Rugby World cup.
