Periodisation in training is the planned manipulation of training variables (sets/reps/intensity), to maximise your adaptations without overtrianing. Periodisation in your lifestyle is the planned manupulation of your life variables (training/work/family), to maximise your progression as an everyday athlete, without pissing off your partner, missing out on promotions at work and not being present with your kids. In this episode I explain why every now and then it's optimal to fuck off balance, and make yourself the focus of your life. To access your 7 Day FREE Trial of STRONG IN 60, click HERE.

We have Kechi Anyadike-Danes back for round two to discuss the second installment of his planned three part research series looking into the divide between human performance research and education and the reality of actual coaching practice. This episode is specifically focused on periodization. We chart the history of how periodization theory developed, and then we look at how coaches responded to a variety of questions about core concepts within periodization. Kechi is a doctoral student at the German Sport University Cologne where he has been looking at various aspects of athlete preparation and how coaches perceive various theories, concepts and strongly held beliefs that exist in the training literature. His doctoral research is being supervised and helped by friend of the pod John Kiely from the University of Limerick and Lars Donath from the German Sport University Cologne. Kechi doesn't just focus on the theoretical, he is also passionate about training and coaching (especially weightlifting). You can find the full text of Kechi's paper here. We also discussed Yuri Verkhoshansky's paper "The End of 'Periodization' in the Training of High Performance Sport" an abbreviated translation of which can be found here. The paper by Matt Clark that we mentioned is available on Modern War Institute here. Some recommended further reading: Foundations of Training Periodization Part I: Historical Outline by Jimmy Pedemonte Foundation of Training Periodization Part II: The Objective of Periodization by Jimmy Pedemonte From Russia with Love? Sixty years of proliferation of L.P. Matveyev's concept of Periodisation? by Arnd Kruger Kechi asked us to include on correction to the section when was discussing a system used in ancient Rome/Greece. The system was called the Tetrad. It is not known whether this was the only approach but it is one that has been popularly discussed due to it appearing in a book called 'On Gymnastics' by Philostratus. Below is the description: By the tetrad system we mean a cycle of four days, each one of which is devoted to a different activity. The first day prepares the athlete; the second is an all-out trial; the third is relaxation; and the fourth a medium-hard workout. The exercise of the first day, the one that prepares him, is made up of short, intense movements which stir up the athlete and prepare him for the hard workout to follow on the next day. The strenuous day (the second) is an all-out test of his potential. The third, the day of relaxation, so to speak, employs his energy in a moderate way, while on the day of the medium workout (the last day), the athlete practices breaking holds himself and preventing his opponent from breaking away.

Are you someone who has recovered from hypothalamic amenorrhea and wondering if you can train hard again? The short answer is yes, but the long answer is maybe. In this episode of Holistic Health Radio, I, Sarah Liz King, an exercise physiologist and health coach, discuss the conditions that need to be met before increasing exercise and emphasise the importance of taking a slow and sustainable approach to avoid the risk of losing one's period again. I explain that finding the right balance for you when it comes to exercise is key. This means focusing on well-structured training sessions with plenty of rest in between, rather than pushing oneself to do more and risking overtraining, and losing your period again. Adequate fuelling and prioritising rest and recovery are also essential. I recommend working with a sports dietitian or nutritionist to ensure adequate fuelling and protein intake without the need for calorie counting or weighing food. In this episode, I also provide more specific nutrition tips, such as the importance of consuming enough carbohydrates to fuel workouts and replenish glycogen stores, as well as the role of healthy fats in hormone production. I also discuss the potential benefits of incorporating strength training into one's exercise routine to support bone health and overall well-being. The most valuable lesson from this podcast is that prioritising one's health and well-being when it comes to exercise is crucial. By taking a slow and sustainable approach and seeking professional guidance, it is possible to train hard and enjoy all types of exercise while maintaining a healthy menstrual cycle. In this episode of the Pacey Performance Podcast, Rob is speaking to Director of Sport Science at the University of Louisville, Ernie Rimer. Ernie joined Rob and JB Morin a few weeks ago for a roundtable on force velocity profiling but because of sprint profiling being such a huge topic, we got him back to go into more details. In the first half of this episode we talk sprint modelling. Ernie gives us a detailed analysis of how we can measure an athlete sprint and then use that data to understand where their weaknesses are and create meaningful interventions to improve them. He uses football (soccer) positions as a great example of how we can use one sprint model to look into different areas of the sprint to create benchmarks and compare player against player. In the second half of the episode we chat about strategic periodisation. This was a topic discussed a long time ago with Sam Robertson after he and David Joyce published a paper on this. How can we work with technical coaches to assess each opponent and manipulate training load in the weeks leading up to and following each match? If we rank an opponent down, are we able to train that bit harder leading up to the game, or can we ease off and give the players extra recovery time? We have a look at the factors which cannot be controlled like the weather, playing surface or game time and marry that up with the factors we can control. This is a fascinating, unique episode with Ernie which listeners will get lots out of. Main talking points - Sprint modelling and ways to assess sprinting From low budget options to larger budget options Decision tree implementation Strategic periodisation - what is it? How to quantifying opponent strength Evaluating strategies against outcomes Fixed factors and dynamics fixed factors

Tips, advice and discussion from Marlene Royle and Rebecca Caroe. This episode is sponsored by the Faster Masters 12 week 5k training plan. https://fastermastersrowing.com/register/head-racing-12-week-program/ 04:00 This Past week Rowing News Magazine published Marlene's article on Periodisation of Technique. 08:00 Merijn Soeters new Book of rowing photography https://fastermastersrowing.com/best-rowing-books-2020/ 10. 30 Our podcast name - we emailed a question to all subscribers 11:30 Ted Pyltlar's background in rowing 13:30 Moving to the single scull - the ultimate boat The club mix of boats has changed as the interest in rowing singles has changed. 16:00 Delaware River is rocky and can get shallow so we lose skegs often 17:00 Training Goals - focus on head race preparation. We organise ourselves as a group of 4 we know where the rocks are. After hurricanes we re-survey the river 22:00 after hurricanes we get high flow and use peripheral vision to steer and avoid landmarks. 23:00 We have a LTR annual program with a waiting list. 16 people limit. We don't have enough coaches and 10 sessions is not enough and so we added a plus plan to integrate them into experienced boats. 26:00 We have a plan to beef up the masters program structure with regular outings Customise a track for each person's flexibility. 28:00 the board has a LTR co-ordinator and organised coaching roster. Scullers have a skills test for 1x use and also a masters program co-ordinator with input from members. We bring in a professional coach a couple of times a month. 31:00 Swapping from sweep to sculling I didn't realise the importance of stability at the catch and release in 1x in order to get the rest of the stroke to work well. Subtle mistakes you can make on port /starboard can really mess you up. It took a while to figure them out. Loose hands is critical in sculling. 33. 50 you have to be at a certain point in your rowing journey to realise or hear certain things. As you get better you realise what the coach meant. 35:00 Try to get an understanding of the complete stroke. Mine is 4 pages long. A picture in your head 37:30 Some adapt technique which is a coping measure because they are afraid of tipping over 39:30 The swirling vortex behind the blade isn't needed - just bury them deeper. Differences of opinion between people happen in rowing - it's good to know them all. 45.00 Rowing movie - Heart of Champions review by Rebecca https://www.amazon.com/Heart-Champions-Michael-Shannon/dp/B09LRZR2F1?ref_=nav_signin&

We've had a little break from the podcast and now I'm delighted to say we're back and have got lots of great interviews coming up. New episodes are uploaded on 29th June. Don't forget to subscribe on your podcast platform or Youtube So what's changed since we were away, well we haven't changed things around too much. We're still exploring all aspects of human performance, whether that is getting stronger, fitter, mentally more prepared, eating better, playing better - but also how we perform in work, individually and as teams. I'll still be speaking to great scientists, practitioners, coaches, athletes, and people outside of sports - but who are interested how we perform as humans.
