On this episode, we've got a guest who's been at the sharp end of elite performance for over 50 years — Robin Williams. Robin's a former Cambridge rower and the coach behind multiple Olympic gold medal crews. He was actually recommended by one of you —  a fellow listener — and once I dug into his story, I knew we had to get him on the show. This episode kicks off with a promise: We're going to uncover the lessons Robin has learned from decades of turning raw athletic power into smooth, relaxed efficiency — and show you exactly how to apply those insights to your stroke in the pool. We'll dive into his athlete-centered coaching philosophy, how to give and receive feedback without offense, and even explore some over-speed training hacks — no speedboat required. Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of the Performance Psychcast. Today we are very fortunate to be speaking with Colin Wilson.  Colin Wilson started his performance and coaching journey in sport from age nine, winning national and international age-group medals in Table Tennis from the age of 13, and two Commonwealth silvers, aged just 16. Colin was always curious from a young age, and fascinated by questions like, “Where does High Performance Really Come From?”. As a result of having two amazing sport-specific and philosophical mentors, Colin became a coach educator age 19. He coached England Women, Men, Girls and Boys and later his son Sam became England Under 21s No. 1. After gaining an Economics and Statistics Honours degree at UCL, he was asked to help coaches and coaching programmes in other sports too and worked on sport-wide development programmes in partnership with BASES, UK Sport, sportscoachUK (now UK Coaching) and the British Olympic Association. Working to develop Olympic level coaches was another wonderful opportunity and a further vertical learning curve. With further fantastic mentors and training in traumatology and psychodynamics he bridged the journey to becoming an executive coach and organisational leadership developer, and was invited to support Nokia, BT Global, HSBC, Barclays, Delphi, Unilever, a major political party, and more. He now specialises in developing senior leadership capability and supporting multi-stakeholder, multi-agency situations with significant human dynamics. In this episode of "Navigating Youth Sports," I delve into the intricate world of coaching our kids. From fostering teamwork to handling competition, I explore the dynamics of guiding young athletes to success while sharing how to separate the roll of parent and coach. Coaching our own child in sports presents a unique set of advantages and challenges, each carrying its own set of pros and cons. However, it can be a rewarding experience that strengthens our relationship and allows for personalized development. It also comes with its share of challenges, including emotional investment, potential bias, and the need to maintain boundaries. Ultimately, finding the right balance between our roles as parent and coach is key to ensuring a positive and fulfilling experience for both ourselves and our child. In this episode I dive deep into how I was able to be a successful parent and coach in hopes that it helps you as parents learn how to separate the two roles. This is a common misunderstanding I see people make, and one worth clarifying.
