Alan Whetton had an illustrious career as a Rugby Union player and All Black. He was part of the team that won the inaugural 1987 Rugby World cup. He played in that tournament alongside his brother Gary Whetton, earning them the accolade of being the only twins to win a Rugby World Cup together. Alan also played for the 'New Zealand Cavaliers' on their controversial 1986 tour of South Africa. The Cavaliers were put together after the NZRU declined to send an All Blacks squad to the then apartheid state.
This week The Friends chat the whole world of rugby..... Literally. Like, we talk about everything.
In the second of our occasional 'doc-pods' we head towards the end of this long fallow period by hearing from Paul Morgan, who is the Communications Lead of PWR and previously Communications Director at Premier Rugby and before that editor of Rugby World. He talks about the rebranding of the PRW this season, his thoughts about Bears Women team and offer some more general thoughts on where domestic rugby union is going given the challenges that is has faced in recent times. Sit back, relax and enjoy and a preview of the Premiership re-start, with a special guest, should be with you later in the week!
Your daily kids news podcast. In a sky-high drama, a SpaceX Starship turned into a fireworks show, going kaboom before hitting the ocean, but scientists cheered, calling it a step towards moon trips. No astronauts aboard, just lessons learned and a promise of lunar leaps ahead. Albert the alligator, the blind pool party legend, got his invite revoked. Decades of splashy fun ended as he's off to a chill retirement home. Lesson of the day: Swimming with gators is out, inflatable dolphins are in. Bye-bye, poolside chomps! Italy's rugby team showed the world how to party for second-last place like it's a win! Ditching the wooden spoon, they celebrated a victory of spirit. It's not about winning; it's about playing the game and giving it your all. Go, Italy! A vet turned into a fox mom with a mask, all to help a baby fox feel at home. With Tony enjoying valuable family time in Australia, we have Paddy Mullarkey stepping into his shoes as co-host for a couple of weeks. We start with a look back at the final weekend of the Rugby World Cup, with South Africa beating New Zealand 12-11 in the final, and England taking the bronze medal after a 26-23 win over Argentina. As well as discussing the key moments in both games, Andy & Paddy share their highlights from the last 7 weeks. We bring you the latest from India and England's ever worsening performances in the Cricket World Cup as they sit firmly rooted to the bottom of the group table, and an admission by the Head Coach that they did not realise qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy depended on them finishing in the top 8 of this tournament. With a fully packed Premier League football weekend, we have a round up of the key results, and ask if Manchester United's 3-0 defeat at the hands of local rivals Manchester City mounts further pressure on Erik ten Hag's tenure as manager at Old Trafford? We also bring updates from Rugby League internationals, the Mexico Formula 1 Grand Prix and cycling's Tour de France, where sprinter Mark Cavendish has described the newly unveiled route for 2024 as “perhaps the most difficult course I've ever seen for a Tour”. Despite being on holiday, Tony has still been a man at work down under, and we have his first missive on sporting life in Australia, as well as his efforts to damage Anglo-Aussie relations by mentioning Eddie Jones every chance he gets! We round off with a review of the heavyweight boxing bout between Fury and Ngannou, with Paddy urging boxing authorities to Get a Grip to improve the sport.

After we were treated to arguably the greatest weekend in the history of the sport, we're delighted to be joined on the podcast today by Ex All Blacks Captain Tana Umaga, a current World Champion in Ex Springbok Francois Louw & Ex Welsh International Philippa Tuttiett. We discuss everything from the; All Blacks epic victory against the Irish to how the Springboks managed to shock the home nation in their capital, and arguably most surprisingly how the Puma's managed to fight back to knock out the Welsh. Tana opens up about why he feels embarrassed by the way people have treated Ian Foster, how he helped forge Bundee Aki's career, why he decided to change the All Blacks Haka in 2005 and what his relationship with Brian O'Driscoll is like after that famous incident in that Lions series. Francois takes us behind the scenes to reveal; how Rassie meticulously plans for scenarios and outcomes better than anyone in world rugby, the secrets a team needs to know to win a World Cup and how the Springboks managed to put a game plan together against the French which saw them come out on top. Plus Philippa reveals to us why everything seemingly went wrong for the Welsh on the weekend, why she felt that the Irish's luck was running out and how England could still have a great chance at going onto win the World Cup. This is your definitive review & preview of all of the World Cup action, so sit back, relax and enjoy the Official Rugby World Cup Podcast, presented by Asahi Super Dry. #BeyondExpected, Hosted on Acast. Fijians are over the moon after their rugby team pulled off the biggest upset of the Rugby World Cup so far, beating Australia for the first time in 69 years. Fiji took the lead in the first half, but Australia made a late comeback. It wasn't enough though, with Fiji holding on to win 22-15, much to the delight of their adoring fans. RNZ Pacific's Iliesa Tora witnessed the incredible scenes in Saint Etienne.
The Springboks start their 2023 Rugby World cup title defence campaign in Marseille, France, today with an expected pulsating tie against Scotland. The Springboks lifted the Webb Ellis Cup for a record-equalling third time in Japan four years ago after beating England in the final, but will have to be at their best from the start if they are to progress from a very difficult Pool B. Victory in today's match will put either side in a brilliant position to qualify for the quarter-finals, easing the pressure somewhat before both play Ireland. The match is due to start at 17:45 South African time. We spoke to SAfm Sports anchor Janet Whitton
We talk Stewart Brewing, the Rugby World cup of Beer and much more.

Ben was a professional rugby player with an English literature degree — something not unheard of in the diverse rugby world, but also certainly not usual. After retiring from the sport, he was confronted with the task of redesigning his life. Although it was initially tough, he took the slow approach of focusing on the things he enjoys doing, which proved very beneficial in the long term. Ben has self-published 3 books so far, he is freelancing, running courses and he recently became a rising TikTok creator.

Many people can remember watching European Cup semi final between Cardiff and Leicester in 2009, mainly because it was decided by a rugby rarity: a penalty shootout.
