Former Pro Skier Jamie MoCrazy is the first woman to double-flip in a slopestyle ski run and is the epitome of strength, perseverance for all female athletes. In 2015 at World Tour Finals upon landing a trick Jamie caught an edge and whiplashed her head into the snow causing her brain to start bleeding in 8 spots and she immediately went into a natural coma, facing paralysis on her right side. In fact, doctors wrote her time of death in the helicopter on the way to the hospital where doctors informed her family that there was a 0% chance she lived. Miraculously, 10 days later, Jamie woke up to severe memory loss and a loss of ALL motor skills (speaking, walking, eating, etc.). During the relearning process, she was 100% dependent on her family - sister Jeanee and mother Fruit. Their sacrifice, determination, and mindset are why Jamie is who she is today. Today on the show we dive deep into Jamie's compelling story from start to finish. We talk about the ups and downs, the details of her near death experience and what life was like shortly after, how Jamie relearned all of her motor skills, the most painful thing that she's had to come to terms with, her advice for people that are feeling like they are at a rock bottom in their life, how Jamie challenges herself today and much more. ⚠ WELLNESS DISCLAIMER ⚠ Please be advised; the topics related to health and mental health in my content are for informational, discussion, and entertainment purposes only. Jamie MoCrazy tells us how she's rebuilt her life and become an advocate for survivors of brain injury after almost being killed in a skiing accident. MoCrazy was seriously injured when attempting a trick at freestyle skiing's World Tour Finals in Canada in 2015. She has since returned to the mountain to get married and is back skiing.Professional mixed martial artist and former footballer Aaron Aby discusses being an athlete with cystic fibrosis, exceeding medical expectations and overcoming stage 3 testicular cancer. Aby's parents were told he was unlikely to live beyond his teenage years but that didn't stop him becoming a promising footballer, who played in Wales youth teams with Aaron Ramsey, before switching to Mixed Martial Arts. Caroline Marks tells us how her family helped her reach the top of surfing, why she's inspired by Simone Biles and how she has unfinished business at the Paris Olympics. The American prodigy became a World Champion for the first time earlier this year.Image: Jamie MoCrazy back skiing on the slopes following her injury. (Photo courtesy of Jamie MoCrazy)
Anyone who has ever enjoyed watching sports will typically concede that part of the appeal is absolute wonder at the skill, drive, courage, and commitment it takes to perform at the highest levels. Jamie MoCrazy embodied all of those attributes as an extreme skier until a traumatic brain injury ended her competitive career. MoCrazy is an American freestyle skier and motivational speaker who began winning State Championships on Connecticut in gymnastics and skiing at age nine. She was the first female skier to land a double backflip in a competition at the Winter X Games XVII in Aspen, Colorado. Her professional career ended after a skiing accident in 2015 while she was competing in the World Tour Finals in Whistler where she sustained a traumatic brain injury. Her injury and subsequent recovery has driven her career as a motivational speaker. She also established MoCrazy Strong, Inc., that serves persons who have survived traumatic brain injury and their family caregivers. The organization also works to raise awareness of traumatic brain injuries and for patient recovery efforts. In 2023, MoCrazy co-directed the short documentary, “#MoCrazyStrong,” with Mark Locki, which premiered at Big Sky Documentary Film Festival and won the best biographical documentary short at the Atlanta DocuFest. MoCrazy holds a bachelor's degree in English Communications from Westminster College in 2019.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Jamie is never going to live independently, she's never going to recover fully, she won't ski again, she probably won't even walk again.” This is what doctors told the family of skier Jamie MoCrazy who suffered a life-threatening brain injury while performing a double flat spin during the 2015 World Tour Finals. Jamie was in a coma for 10 days. When she woke up, she suffered from amnesia and the right side of her body was paralyzed. After her miraculous recovery, Jamie became a motivational speaker and made it her mission to help others recover from unexpected trauma, overcome adversity, and climb new peaks on the journey of life. Today she joins us to talk about her miraculous recovery. She explains how her hiking metaphor came about, how she stops to “Look at the view” when she needs a break, and how this translates into other aspects of her life. “My story is a miraculous recovery because I beat every expectation for what was going to happen. We believe we can share some of these guides to help others have a miraculous recovery from what they're going through. Because, as I say, a lot of my luck was created. You can create your own luck if you take the steps to build it, and climb an alternative peak.” Jamie Crane-Mauzy—better known as Jamie MoCrazy, a name she'll explain early in this week's show—has lived most of her life on the slopes. She started skiing at age 1, and by 18, had gone pro as a slopestyle and halfpipe skier. Everything changed in 2015, when she crashed at the World Tour Finals and sustained a traumatic brain injury. Her condition was so severe the medical team had even written her fatality report. She survived—and after a 10-day coma, embarked on an extensive, years-long recovery process. Of course, re-learning to walk, talk, and interact socially were difficult. But one of the biggest emotional struggles, Jamie says, came when she realized she would no longer be competing as a pro athlete. Coming to terms with that major life shift involved the support of a loving family, professional mental-health treatment, and finding a greater purpose—educating and motivating others, including survivors of traumatic brain injury and their caregivers, through the MoCrazy Strong organization. It's a different kind of mountain to climb, Jamie says, but one that's ultimately incredibly rewarding and fulfilling. **Please note that this episode contains descriptions of trauma that some people may find unsettling.
