Speaking of wine and spies, check out Vint Hill Winery in Warrenton, Virginia.  In 1942 the US Army set up top-secret SIGINT operations at the now-vineyard after the farm's owner, a Ham Radio enthusiast, set up a wire on the roof of the barn that could reach signals from Berlin. The farm was the site of The Signal Corps cryptographic school, which famously intercepted messages from Hiroshi Oshima in 1943.

Thom Shanker is a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council's Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security. He is also the director of the Project for Media and National Security at George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs.Prior to his time at these academic institutions, Shanker was a longtime Pentagon correspondent and editor for the New York Times. His tenure with the Times included thirteen years covering the US Department of Defense, overseas combat operations, and national-security policymaking. Shanker conducted dozens of reporting trips to Afghanistan and Iraq and was embedded in the field with units from the squad and company level through battalion, brigade, division, and corps. He has chronicled a historic series of defense secretaries, including Donald H. Rumsfeld, Robert M. Gates, Leon E. Panetta, and Chuck Hagel. More recently, Shanker served as deputy Washington editor of diplomacy, military, and veterans affairs. Before joining the Times in 1997, Shanker spent five years as the Tribune's Moscow correspondent, covering from the start of the Gorbachev era to the death of the Soviet Union and the communist empire in Eastern Europe. Shanker is an author, with Eric Schmitt, of Counterstrike: The Untold Story of America's Secret Campaign Against Al Qaeda, published in August 201. The book became a New York Times best seller. During our chat, we talked at length about his newest book, Age of Danger that he co-authored with Andrew Hoehne. Their book was published in May of 2023 to much acclaim by both military experts and politicians alike.During our chat, we discussed the history of our “warning and action systems” specific to our military readiness, and how these systems have been altered and improved over the decades to protect Americans and our national security. We also discussed the many new challenges presented by climate change, pandemics, AI, and our ever increasing involvement with two hot wars in the middle east and Russian. It was a fascinating conversation with a true legend in the world of investigative journalism, and it was my honor to have Thom join me on the program. I hope you learn as much as I did from this chat.Watch Episode: This is a public episode. As Americans grapple with the legacies of the post-9/11 conflicts, the relationship between the country and its armed forces is at a critical inflection point. What role do Americans want their military to play in civic life? How much does, and should, the military influence policy? From the reintegration of veterans into civilian society, to the dangers of politicization of the armed forces, to the inevitable - and often, healthy - tensions between civilian and uniformed decision-makers in Washington, this event will examine what makes civil-military relations break down and promote what a healthy civil-military relationship can do to reinvigorate our democracy.

For the first time in eight years, we are watching a new team take over the national security infrastructure. Now is a good time to review, "Who is who in the zoo" and what exactly they do. In the alphabet soup of organizations, how do the NSC, NSA, CIA, DOD, DIA, DHS and DNI all work together - and in competition - to enhance national security? Though everyone likes to bash bureaucracies, they are important and are only as good as those who populate and lead them. Our guest for the full hour to help us navigate the swamp the "blob" lives in will be Loren DeJonge Schulman.Lauren is the Deputy Director of Studies and the Leon E. Panetta Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security. She most recently served as the Senior Advisor to National Security Advisor Susan Rice. Before returning to the White House in 2013, she was Chief of Staff to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs. She served as Director for Defense Policy on the National Security Council staff from 2011–2012 and prior to that as a special assistant to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. She is a Texan (the obnoxious kind), mom to the most awesome pizza loving two year old ever, and spends too much time on twitter.
