This week's show is all about musicians creating art in other spaces. And joining me on the show is musician and podcaster Jolene Higgins, who is also known as Little Miss Higgins. Jolene and I had a great conversation about her new project The Fire Waltz which is both a 5-part mini-series podcast and a full length album. The final episode of The Fire Waltz podcast was posted yesterday (March 14th) which also just so happened to be the release day for the album! Good timing, right? We talked about what it's like creating things that aren't music and how that can help the creative process overall. It was a really great discussion and I hope you enjoy it!FRESH CONTENT LINKSLittle Miss Higgins recommends: Movies Dark City + Stage Door Canteen Jen recommends: Music from the TV show The Dropout SOTWLittle Miss Higgins - Flock In My HeadLearn more about Little Miss Higgins at littlemisshiggins.comAnd learn more about Fritz Media at fritzmedia.ca
Little Miss Higgins is a singer, songwriter, and most importantly, a storyteller. We had a great conversation about her exciting new project, The Fire Waltz — which incorporates an album (featuring a murderer’s row of local roots musicians) and a narrative podcast, all tied to a story from her personal family history. We also got into the reasons she was drawn to Winnipeg, finding musical family in the Times Change(d) scene, and much more! This episode brought to you by our pals at Devine Shirt Company.Huge thanks to everyone who supports the podcast on Patreon! You can help out for as little as $1 a month if you like the show and want to throw some change in the guitar case! You can also throw a one-time tip via Buymeacoffee. As always, if you like the podcast, please tell a friend or 20! Rate and review on your podcast player of choice! It’s Junofest weekend in Winnipeg, and there’s so much going on that today’s show had to be pre-recorded, but I had to make sure that there was something on to celebrate great Canadian music and a couple of exciting upcoming events.

This edition of The Roadhouse is two-thirds full of artists who do things by themselves - truly independent self-released blues. Deb Ryder, Michigan Curve, Sean Chambers, Snarky Dave & The Prickly Bluesmen, and Little Miss Higgins & the Winnipeg Five lead the way with music they're released on their own. Along with some well-known blues names, these artists defintely make the 454th Roadhouse another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.
We’ve got some stellar new releases and some upcoming show news to kick things off, before we bring it right back down for some songs for my teacher friends who are singing the back to school blues.

Western Canadian blues/country crossover artist Little Miss Higgins will be speaking with us about her latest recording, Bison Ranch Recording Sessions. The album features her band, dubbed with Winnipeg Five, and is full of lush arrangements and multi-part harmonies all recorded in an old barn in rural Manitoba. We'll also speak with Shawn Bradley, Fadernoise.com recording engineer and author of "The Other Side of the Tracks" recording blog on CM's Blog Central, about the continually shifting paradigm of home recording and some tips on getting the most from your home studio set-ups.

Before the award nominations, before the hype, before the sold-out shows, there was Dan Mangan, Vancouver singer-songwriter. During tonight's show we replayed his wonderful live in-studio set of Aug. 26, 2009. Got to a few releases as well, notably the great new release from Little Miss Higgins. Enjoy what's left of summer!valfolkoasis@gmail.com
