Tod and Claire discuss "The Loved Dead" by C.M. Eddy, Jr. and H.P. Lovecraft, which was first published in the May/June 1924 issue of Weird Tales. As this is a horror podcast, and may not be for everyone. In particular, this story is about necrophilia, or as we refer to it, "corpse snuggling." There's also brief mention of suicide as a viable out for the main character. Finally, there's a fairly long conversation about the nature of evil and how parricide (the killing of one's parents) figures in the balance of evil. We kinda go back to that over and over in this one.Claire mentioned Jonica's Island, which was published in 1945. Claire says, "check it out!"We never solved the mystery of "what was Tod thinking of" when he suggested a) Wuthering Heights has a plot element of indenturing, and b) that it takes place in Nova Scotia. Tod was thinking of Anne of Green Gables, which is, indeed, set in NS, Canada. But we're still unclear if any of the characters were indentured because we still haven't looked it up.Finally, give @GreatOldBot a follow on Mastodon. Do it! This week, Paul and Adam discuss the news that Lisa Banfield (along with two co-authors, her sister Maureen, and writer Sherri Aikenhead) has written a book about her experiences with NS mass shooter Gabriel Wortman. The book is set for release in January, 2026. The guys deconstruct the news release, and predict what might be included in the upcoming work. Also covered this week is the news that dogs have been brought in from out of province by the RCMP to assist with the search for missing Pictou County children Jack and Lilly Sullivan, the arrest of Deputy Commissioner David Teboul, and the arguments before the Supreme Court of Canada on whether provinces are entitled to use and reuse the notwithstanding clause of the constitution (the Federal gov't says that invoking the notwithstanding clause every five years undermines the rights of Canadians such that it should not be permitted).

Metal YouTuber and fellow Oregonian Taylor Danley shows up with riffs, opinions, and a tube-amp habit that could brown out a neighborhood. We trace the path from Elvis ukulele kid to extreme-metal lifer, then get into the real fight: cranked amps vs. modeling. We make the case for the Boss Tube Amp Expander (turn it up, keep your lease), why an Axe-Fx is the smartest carry-on, and how millimeters of mic placement beat a mile of copy-paste presets. We talk producers who actually make bands sound like bands (Adam D., Will Putney), the charm of leaving one or two “human” wobbles in the take, and why the Boss Katana is still the new-player cheat code. Gear heads get the goodies: Orange OR80, old Marshalls, NS-2 doing unglamorous hero work, the Metal Zone used tastefully (yes, it can be done), and the story behind Taylor's Obsidian Audio boost plus a new preamp on the way. There's record-store nostalgia, kids discovering Sabbath, a Corolla-vs-'69 Camaro tone analogy, and a very Portland pizza detour to land the plane. Good laughs, useful takeaways, zero gatekeeping. Commemorated in songs and tunes on a CD I found in the Ullapool Museum last month. Plus lots of new releases , Rogue previews (Unfaithful Servants & Ms. Shari Ulrich, John Doyle, Little Miss Higgins), and more. Unfortunately, a power outage crippled CiTR and the podcast servers but the fm signal worked, and I saved this show so some could tune in live. The podcast is now online as well.

Episode 591 - Francene Gillis - Where Did i Go - A Memoir Plus, Mild Traumatic Brain Injury MTBIFrancene Gillis, author/consultant/educator/advocate, has been a writer her whole life, starting at the age of five with a writing contest created by her teacher at Port Hood Consolidated, Mother St. Magdalene. Fifty years later, she is still writing in multiple genres, both fiction and nonfiction for a variety of audiences. She devoured books in the school library and putting words to paper became therapeutic when life's tragedies hit. She discovered that her writing could speak for those in pain. Experiencing the devastating loss of loved ones, much of her first writings involved themes of inspiration, loss, overcoming adversity, and sharing her feelings with others so they would not feel alone. She started writing poetry as a teen and giving it to grieving friends, or as tributes to community members. She majored in English at St. Francis Xavier University, continued with a BEd, and obtained a master's in education in Multiculturalism, Administration & Leadership. A community activist, she writes advocacy pieces, such as those gathered in her book, A Rose in November and in her regular column for the Inverness Oran. Her latest book, Where Did i Go? A Memoir Plus, will launch June 2025, partner published by OC Publishing. It was written after her career as a high school English teacher came to an unexpected, painful end in 2016 due to a slip and fall on black ice on her way to work that caused mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Except for educational purposes, Francene has always lived in Port Hood on the coast of Cape Breton, NS. with the ocean at her backdoor.https://www.francenegillis.ca/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

Join us as we look at six places throughout the world that hold deep significance in history and should never be forgotten as we forge forward in today's uncertain world. As everyday travellers, it can be challenging to know how we can be better travellers and humans. We feel that one way is to visit these sites of significance, immerse yourself in the history, understand the impact of the events there and pass that on to others.May we never repeat the atrocities of the past and appreciate the lives we are currently living, understanding history is happening right now, and the suffering in the world right now should also not be forgotten.Support the Travel Mug Podcast by buying us a coffee! Stay tuned.Guillermo This is a public episode. Carolyn knows deeply about transitions after moving to London for ten years and then to Texas, USA for fifteen. Along the way she developed her expertise as a physical therapist in London, but she was not able to practice after the move to Texas. This loss of identity and change was the painful catalyst to redesigning her personal and professional goals. While she raised her three daughters, she also began raising others up by mentoring them in their difficult life transitions. Union Pacific’s $88 billion bid for Norfolk Southern could usher in a new era for the North American railroad industry if the companies can show the Surface Transportation Board that the deal will enhance competition and is in the public interest. In this Talking Transports podcast, Tony Hatch, founder and president of ABH Consulting, joins Lee Klaskow, Bloomberg Intelligence senior transportation and logistics analyst, to share his insights about the merits and challenges of a possible merger between the two large railroads. UP and NS will need to make their case to all stakeholders, which include shippers, workers, Norfolk shareholders and regulators, who could be the most difficult to persuade. The downstream effect of a deal or perceived likelihood of regulatory approval could lead to further consolidation among Class I carriers.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to a special series of Art Pays Me interviews with the winners of the 2024 Creative Nova Scotia Awards. Presented annually by Arts Nova Scotia and the Creative Nova Scotia Leadership Council, these awards celebrate artistic excellence across Mi'kma'ki. On this episode I spoke with Emerging Artist Award recipient, Lux Gow-Habrich (星尘), a multidisciplinary visual artist, facilitator and support worker of mixed second-generation Chinese and German heritage, practicing between Tkarón:to (Toronto, ON) and Kjipuktuk (Halifax, NS). They blend gestural, craft and creative community practices to redefine our understanding of art and cultural praxis as sacred remedial forces that can deeply transform and mend systems and relationships. Lux's interest in the body as archive, cultural objects and commemorative practices weave together complex diasporic experiences of loss and belonging, and embodied hybridization in blood and spirit - to unearth individual and collective untold stories and unspoken legacies of disabled, queer grief and empowerment. Committed to developing inclusive creative platforms, and reimagining cultural futures, Lux's practice is an expression rooted in relational and access dreaming. This special episode would not be possible without the support of Arts Nova Scotia and the Creative Nova Scotia Leadership Council, and the fantastic production work of Heist and Keke Beatz.

Union Pacific is reportedly in early-stage talks to acquire Norfolk Southern, its smaller Eastern rival. This potential tie-up would combine the largest publicly held US railroad with NS, bringing together over 60,000 employees and 60,000 miles of track. David Steiner has officially taken the helm of the US Postal Service as the new Postmaster General, becoming the highest paid chief executive in the agency's history with a salary over $346,000 plus a 50% bonus. The Canadian government will begin a confidential vote on Monday for 53,000 Canada Post employees to ratify the state-owned company's final contract offer, despite opposition from union leadership. This vote aims to conclude 19 months of negotiations, which included a 32-day strike and recent mail carrier refusal to work overtime, leading to daily operational losses of $7.3 million per day in June.
