For the uninitiated, the High Hawks are a Bluegrass/Americana music supergroup featuring members of Leftover Salmon, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades, Hard Working Americans, Railroad Earth and Great American Taxi. Mother Nature's Show is actually the band's sophomore effort and demonstrates a lot of growth in this band's combined effort. I caught up with Vince Herman Leftover Salmon's frontman and one of the High Hawks vocalists and guitar players and Chad Staehly the High Hawks keyboard player to get a status check on the band's evolution, the song writing process and how Mother Nature's Show came together.    First song: Temperature Is Rising Second song: Top Shelf, Rock BottomSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Journey of My Mother's Son

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 2, 2022 39:00

In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Maggie Mae. Maggie is one of the singer/songwriters that we saw perform at the Philadelphia Folk Festival back in August. She is a soulful singer-songwriter based in Philadelphia who fronts an exciting and energetic Folk/Funk group under the same name. She pulls inspiration from the music she grew up on and the strong musical foundation her family built, along with the ever-evolving world of music around her to carve out a sound all her own. Combining genuine, heartfelt lyrics with catchy, cutting guitar riffs, her songs can either touch your soul or make you want to get up and dance.  She has been described as “poppy, polished, talented, & promising,” by XPN's The Key's John Vettese. Originally hailing from Northern New Jersey, Maggie has always had music in her life. Her parents met in college and formed a bluegrass band called 'The Wild Oats,' and later performed throughout New Jersey with various traditional Irish bands. Her father instilled a love for 'all things string' from a very young age, and her mother always encouraged her to write and sing. With a Steinway Grand piano in her living room, and fiddles, penny whistles, hand drums, dulcimers, harps, mandolins, banjos, and guitars littered throughout her childhood home, Maggie has managed to pick up and write with just about any stringed instrument she can find. Growing up, she was always attending folk & bluegrass festivals, making sure she was up front for favorites like Martin Sexton, Dar Williams, Vance Gilbert, and Railroad Earth. Rock and Blues legends including Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Allman Brothers, and Bonnie Raitt were always on heavy rotation in her house. During her time attaining an Associate's Degree in Music Performance, Maggie cultivated a love and appreciation for classical, jazz, funk, world, and jam music, and deepened her knowledge of jazz and bluegrass standards. She also fell deeply in love with one-man-band greats Michael Hedges and Keller Williams, leading her to discover and navigate the world of percussive guitar and loop pedals and effects. She puts all of this together to inspire, and continuously develop, the sound she creates today. Maggie has managed to round up a talented, ever-rotating cast of characters to support her over the years, featuring some of Philly's most talented musicians. No matter which lineup is sharing the stage with her, the band always brings an impressively varied set of skills and an undeniable energy to the stage. Maggie Mae has shared bills with both local and national acts including Soulive, The Heavy Pets, Dawg Yawp, Lohai, Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats, the Ladles, and more at many of Philly and New Jersey's premiere music venues. Maggie Mae released her debut single "Can You Hear Me Now?" featuring Jake Leschinsky of Philadelphia's favorite funk band, Swift Technique, on bass in November of 2018. The band made their debut appearance at World Cafe Live on December 20th, 2018 with friends Taylor Kelly & Erik Kramer filling the bill in celebration. You can listen to "CYHMN" on Spotify and iTunes.  At the end of 2019, Maggie won a contest to open for Soulive at the Ardmore Music Hall, where they made their debut as a 10-piece band. December marked the beginning of creating their debut album, recording the first single off the album, 'Hometown,' at Rittenhouse Soundworks with Michael Cumming engineering and Robby Webb producing. 'Hometown' is available everywhere. Maggie is currently in the studio recording her next LP, which is scheduled to release in early 2023. To find out more about Maggie and listen to some of her music, check out her website at www.maggiemaemusic.com. Click on either of the links below to listen to the conversation.

Tim has had a long diverse career, starting as a working musician at age 17 and producing his first record in 1986. Prior to Railroad Earth, one of Tim's most notable bands (to many of you east coast folks) was with the Fabulous Blue Sparks From Hell. And as quoted from Tim's website, “toured continuously for 12 years from 1977 to New Years day 1990, when they began their highly profitable career of never playing together again - and the seemingly endless series of reunion gigs After decades of experience creating music as an artist, songwriter, session musician and producer Tim says he may not be up to playing music live for the rest of his life but you will have to pry his dead, clammy hands off the mixing console. His main area of expertise is "human ecology" – how environment and context influence aspects of both human biology and behavior I met David three years ago when I traveled to Denver to interview Todd Sheaffer for the film Charlie Loves Our Band. I'm grateful to call him my friend. This interview was recorded on May 3rd, 2021. David hosted a screening of Charlie Loves Our Band last month in Denver, July 21st 2022 at the University of Denver. thanks David for hosting the screening. You rallied together a slice of Colorado friends, old and new and of course were the perfect host for the affair. After decades of enjoying live music and making pictures of these concerts, you can certainly call David a Music Historian, and his curated photographs, musical selections and historical references certainly defines a thread of the music and culture we all love so… If you don't know David…do yourself a favor and meet him. He is at most all Railroad Earth, From Good Homes and Todd Sheaffer shows…as well as ALL Bob Dylan and I do believe Steve Kimoch, and that's just the beginning. The band's founding guitarist and singer-songwriter, Joe Ferland, came up as a musician in the 1990s NYC music scene, playing in a variety of rock and pop-punk contexts, and earning a few record deals along the way. Eventually, the music biz hustle burned him out, but music came back into his life during the passing of his mother when he and his wife—his co-writer and co-vocalist Jale—found their way to Danceland. The five-piece band is rooted in a timeless psychedelic Americana tradition, replete with fine, storyteller songcraft; sunny harmonies; lonesome pedal steel; stratospheric lead guitar passages; and a touch of Eastern mysticism. First out the gate is the album's lead single “Don't Act Surprised,” a driving acoustic number that evokes ‘American Beauty' era Dead or contemporary artists like Railroad Earth or String Cheese Incident. 'Don't Act Surprised' is the story of my mother's first marriage that brought my sister and brother into the world,” Ferland comments. “After listening to the stories from my mother and sister over the years, I came to the conclusion that my mother left her first husband partly due to postpartum depression and that is why I think there was never really a “this is what happened” scenario. I finally put into words and music a story that has haunted me for many years.” * JC got a chance to catch up with Joe to talk about his lengthy career in music, what has changed over the years, and much more. *bio pulled from gratefulweb.com

So when they went to make their new record, All for the Song due out April 22nd, they headed to New Orleans and recruited singer songwriter and producer Anders Osborne to help at the dials. Hello everybody and welcome to this week's episode of Attendance Bias. This week's guest is the host of The Bar Line Shift on HomeGrown radio, Amanda Cadran. As you'll hear Amanda explain, HomeGrown Radio is an internet radio station with deep ties to the Railroad Earth family and Amanda's show features a thematic playlist made up of everything from jam-centric music to obscure world music that you've probably never heard. I caught a few episodes of The Bar Line shift and immediately wanted to have Amanda on the show. For today's episode Amanda chose a monster: Phish's show on New Year's Eve 1995 at Madison Square Garden. In addition to being an all-timer, it was Amanda's first show. Imagine that! Long considered to be the holy grail of Phish shows, I was intimidated to tackle it, but once I spoke with Amanda ahead of time, I knew it would be easy and fun to just geek out about this fan favorite. You also may notice that I kind of went overboard with song clips in this episode but when you've got a show like this where virtually every track is a highlight...well...what are you gonna do?So let's join Amanda to hear about spotting Bruce Springsteen at Toys R Us, chess games, and The Gamehendge Time Laboratory for December 31, 1995.

The Sound Podcast with Ira Haberman

I first heard about the High Hawks, an all-star Americana outfit consisting of players from mostly the jamgrass scene from Chad Staehly of Hard Working Americans and Great American Taxi when I talked to him a few months back about the John Hartford tribute record, and the band’s contribution of Waugh Paugh.  The band includes, Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon), Tim Carbone (Railroad Earth), Chad Staehly (Hard Working Americans),  Adam Greuel (Horseshoes & Hand Grenades), Brian Adams (DeadPhish Orchestra), and Will Trask (Great American Taxi).   Together, the band blends the sounds each member is known for and offer up a fresh take with original tunes and one cover on their debut release due out June 11th on LoHi records. I caught up with Tim Carbone and Chad Staehly to talk about the release and the band. The conversation started when I mentioned to the guys that our studio is about 5 miles away from where Ronnie Hawkins and The Hawks used to play. That band, became “The Band”, who sort of invented Americana music. I suggested there were some similarities at least in sound between the band The Hawks became and the High Hawks which amused Tim Carbone… First Song: 00:14: Waugh Paugh Interview Begins: 04:48 Extro Song: 48:53: Heroes & Highways See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

BIG NEWS FOR MIDDLE CLASS ROCK STAR! We're now reaching 25 FM frequencies throughout Colorado via Chris K's radio show, The Colorado Playlist. My guest this week is Whitewater Ramble founder and front person, Patrick Sites. He grew up in Idaho in a very americana friendly family. His father is a 9 time National Fiddle Champion. (NOTE: I misspoke in the monologue of the show. I misunderstood and said that Patrick's father, Joe Sites, was a nine time National Fiddle Champion AND Grand Master Fiddle Champion. It is in fact his wife, Jacie Sites, who is the Grand Master Fiddle Champion. Sorry for the error). Patrick, however, wasn't too interested in music of that sort as a kid. He grew up largely oblivious to that scene until he moved to Colorado in his 20s and saw David Grisman perform at the Mishawaka Amphitheatre. That inspired him to take up the mandolin and play for hours upon hours every day. He started attending weekly jams at Avogadro's in Ft. Collins, and eventually started his band, Whitewater Ramble. Ramble has been Patrick's main focus since the group's formation in the mid 2000s. Over the past 15 years, they've performed at clubs and festivals across the country and toured with the likes of Railroad Earth, The Infamous Stringdusters, and Greensky Bluegrass. In this episode, we chat about how he first was drawn to the jam scene, the ups and downs of band life, and the strategies his band used to book their own dates across the country. On June 26th, LoHi records will be releasing On the Road: A tribute to John Hartford. For the uninitiated John, a musician, and a bonafide artist, was a genre bending genius who many credit for planting the seeds of the current jamgrass movement, and what many consider Americana music. His accomplishments are vast, and his contribution to roots music are well documented. So it just makes sense that LoHi records, put together this tribute, filled with so many prominent artists who have Hartford to thank for setting up the scene of which they are a part. Bands like Leftover Salmon, Railroad Earth, The Infamous Stringdusters, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades have all contributed covers to this collection that includes many more great bands and artists. I’ve been listening to the collection for what feels like months since I begged the publicist to share it with me, but only recently did I catch up with Chad Staehly the man responsible for curating the sonic deliciousness that is On the Road: A tribute to John Hartford. I was curious how Chad, a talented musician in his own right got involved in the project, and that is indeed where our conversation started. Railroad Earth kindly came into Diamond Street Studios in between the Colorado and Georgia portions of their most recent New Year's run. The band played three songs from their 2020 release, All For The Song (including the title track). Principal songwriter and lead vocalist Todd Sheaffer stuck around after this performance to chat with Rob and Seth. Todd talks about how the band negotiated their way through the recent devastating loss of founding member and multi-instrumentalist Andy Goessling. We learn how his loss influenced the All For The Song record, and how the band still feels him with them as they move forward a different twist on their live sound. Todd talks about how Col. Bruce Hampton was a big part of them finding bassist Andrew Altman, and how Altman in turn brought into the RRE fold another Bruce Hampton alum, Matt Slocumb. Todd jokes around plenty - but gets serious when he recalls the night he and his previous band From Good Homes opened for Bob Weir and Ratdog on the night Jerry Garcia died. The other two songs performed were "Slipping Away" and "The Great Divide." See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

I've had a little bit of time to come to grips with the terrific time that was DelFest 2019 and now it's time for me to share with you some thoughts, sounds, and discussions from what was one of my very favorite weekends since... last year's DelFest! This is one of the finest festivals in the land. Everything from the music, to the location, to the crowds in attendance, is just right. We're going to listen to some of the music from the weekend, some interviews that I conducted while I was there, and while this episode is certainly bluegrass-centric, we're still going to get a healthy dose of Grateful Dead...Sort of. We're going to hear from Billy Strings, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Larry Keel Experience, The Travelin' McCourys, Railroad Earth, and The Del McCoury Band. That's just a small sampling of the great music that I saw. I try to run most of them down in the show. After all the DelFest talk, I thought you might like to hear a little Jerry Garcia. In keeping with a popular discussion point from the weekend and the bluegrass festival thing, we'll be checking out a short set of Old And In The Way from the Marin County Bluegrass Festival in 1974. sat down to interview those artists and more for the new Osiris series 'InnerViews'. Seth and Rob sit down with Mimi Naja of Fruition at the Electric Forest Festival in Michigan and initially talk about what it's like to be playing traditional instruments at a primarily electronic music festival. Mimi ends up explaining the thinking behind the band's decision to bring into the studio the rock feel of their live shows and their decision to go with producer Tucker Martine. Martine taught the band many things, helped them add layers to their sound and he is the chief reason that Mimi decided to play some baritone guitar on the record. The result is by far their greatest record to day, "Watching It All Fall Apart." The trio also discuss how the band's breakup songs contain elements of hope and accountability. We hear a bit about Mimi's days as a Georgia youth and explains her decision to leave Georgia and go to school in Portland. She would leave school and then clicking with a group of musicians while playing Marley and Sublime tunes. These folks would end up becoming Fruition. We learn about the band's the early days, and some of the antics that went on as the band grew (like "song-bombing" Vince Herman). She also talks about how she used to leave pronouns out of her songwriting because of all of the homophobia in the world, but that she has more recently eschewed this approach and been forthcoming with her sexuality. Mimi also explains specific reasons why Atlanta-based musician Janelle Monelle is an inspiration to her, and the fluid nature of sexuality in the music world. Speaking of inspirations, the discussion most certainly gets to stories about Greensky Bluegrass, Elephant Revival, The Infamous Stringdusters and other of Fruition's "Crazy Uncles and Aunts." She also expresses love for her own band's fans, which she calls the "Fruit'y Freaks." Seth and Rob then wrap up the show catching up the listeners on show news during one of the few times they were together last month. Speaking from a coffee shop in Black Mountain, NC they also discuss North Carolina in general, and specifically their day together there. The show ends with more Fruition music including Mimi and band mates Jay Cobb Anderson and Kellen Asebroek sitting in with Railroad Earth and performing Fruition's "Mountain Annie" at the idyllic Red Rocks. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. www.joshthaneproductions.com www.wonderdogsounds.com All social media management, promotion and website maintenance/building done by Harris Sullivan. wTnS is a proud partner of the Osiris Podcast Network. Rob and Seth discuss their experiences with Railroad Earth including Rob’s memories of when he saw RRE front man Todd Scheaffer’s band, From Good Homes open for Bob Weir and Ratdog the night after Jerry Garcia died. A brief discussion of this podcast’s fast-approaching live event at City Winery Atlanta September 19th takes us to to Seth and Rob sitting down with Tim Carbone (The Contribution, Railroad Earth) for a thorough examination of what makes him a truly special human and musician. Tim talks about how this summer Railroad Earth was forced to adjust to the temporary-but-still-painful loss of founding member, multi-instrumentalist Andy Goessling - who was "on the disabled list." We learn how they relied on top notch players to step up, sit in and help out - particularly Chris Pandolfi and Matt Slocumb who kept things compelling for RRE loyalists by being part of bringing forth unusual versions of songs in the RRE lexicon - specifically Slocumb on, “Morning Flies." Carbone explains in detail exactly how Psychedelia earned itself an assist with regard to the genesis of his adventurous side project, The Contribution. Tim talks about the band first doing a session in a cabin in Woodacre, California, then working in Laughing Tiger Studios in San Rafeal and eventually recording at Bob Weir’s state-of-the-art TRI Studios in Marin County - elaborating specifically about TRI’s "microphone guru," Rick Vargas. Vargas was vital to the success of their recording and Tim still uses techniques he learned from Vargas during this time. He also relates how he initially became interested in violin, and then how his personal experiences (including a stint playing harmonica in a blues band) and hearing artists like Paul Butterfield and Don “Sugarcane” Harris shaped his approach to playing. Tim tells of his days in The Blue Sparks From Hell, and their string-band bluegrass alter-ego band (each with future Railroad Earth bandmate Andy Goessling). Tim recounts some of the legendary New York shows he saw as an audience member, including his various Fleetwood Mac experiences, detailed accounts of his favorite Traffic shows and his memory of the legendary Grateful Dead SUNY 1970 Halloween show. He also speaks of shaking hands with Muddy Waters, playing in bands with Rick Danko, attending Danko's funeral and meeting future band mates and other significant folks at New York’s legendary music club, The Wetlands. We learn of how Railroad Earth landed the Telluride Bluegrass Festival for their 10th gig, and how the band would unfold from there. He talks about working with various engineers including John Siket of Phish “phame.” Tim conveys what it is like working with RRE’s brilliant Todd Scheaffer, identifying specifically Scheaffer’s feel for melody, knowledge of songwriting and familiarity with literature as reasons for Todd's excellence. He also shares his memory of sitting in with the Allman Brothers’ Band, and then how he, and in turn Railroad Earth evolved from casually collaborating with, to becoming full-on recording partners on Ashes and Dust with jamband icon Warren Haynes. Other icons discussed are Buddy Cage, David Nelson, the timeless David Bromberg and this program's Godfather, Col. Bruce Hampton. We hear music from Tim’s band The Contribution, including the debut of “So Long, Farewell” in its entirety, which is paired with “Raven’s Child” from Railroad Earth’s most recent cd Captain Nowhere. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. www.joshthaneproductions.com www.wonderdogsounds.com Inside Out w/ Turner and Seth: insideoutwtns.com Twitter: @InsideoutWTNS Instagram: www.instagram.com/insideoutwtns Facebook: www.facebook.com/insideoutwTnS See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this episode I talk with Nikki Talley, a singer/songwriter that has spent the last four years living in a van with her husband Jason Sharp. Most musicians say they live in a van or bus, but Nikki and Jason gave up a good job and their house to become full time musical vagabonds--a dream many have, but few would ever attempt.   We talk about their decision to go to the Telluride Songwriting Contest and why placing second might have been better than placing first. Nikki also talks about having 500 songs written and how the idea of success changes as we get older. We listen to four songs: "Travelin On" 25:28 "Rainy Day" 51:11 "Railroad Boy" 1:05:11 "Go Out On The Water" 1:21:08 This episode is brought to you by The Big What. A NC music festival hosted by Big Something that takes place July 21-23 near Mebane, NC. Featured headliners include: Turkuaz, Spiritual Rez, Dr. Bacon, The Werks, and Pigeons Playing Pingpong.
