What happens when you let go? Dan Mangan found out when he stopped trying to make the best record of his career — and he ended up with one of the best records of his career. The Juno-winning singer-songwriter says it all goes to show that surrendering control might be the key to making something great. Dan sits down with Tom Power to tell us how a trip into the woods laid the foundation for his new album, “Natural Light,” and why he wrote a song about letting your kids know you love them no matter what they do. If you enjoy this conversation, take a listen to Tom's chat with Max Kerman of Arkells.

He has released 3 albums, and has been featured by CBC Radio One, Jade Music Festival Taipei, and Jorvik Radio UK. The father-and-sons trio, The Discarded, are back with their sixth full-length studio album, The Green Door, set to release on November 25, 2024. Leading the album is the energetic first single, "Testify!"—a fiery rock anthem that channels the band's signature intensity and passion set for release on October 16th, 2024. The song originated from a jam session between guitarist JP Wasson and his son, Caden, and was further transformed by bassist Jared Wasson's live performances. "Testify!" stands out for its Southern preacher vibe, mixed with the driving force of punk, and topped off with the iconic line: "Brothers and sisters I need you to testify!"  The song evolved when bassist Jared introduced a fresh, vibrant bassline during live performances, diverging from the original recording. “Jared's live counter riff added a completely new dimension to the song,” JP explains. Inspired by this new energy, the band re-recorded the track to capture the heightened intensity. Guitarist Michael McKenzie contributed intricate riffs that mesh with Jared's bass, adding a groove reminiscent of the ‘60s "Day Tripper" vibe, while Carmen Toth's background vocals give the track a full, resonant quality. The Green Door highlights The Discarded's evolving sound, merging the grit of garage rock with the punch of punk and elements of classic rock. The album was produced by John Critchley, whose work with artists like Elliott BROOD and Dan Mangan adds a polished yet vibrant feel to the record. Michael McKenzie, a standout figure in the Canadian rock scene, was integral to shaping the album's sonic identity. From touring North America with Universal Honey and supporting acts like The Goo Goo Dolls, The Tragically Hip, and Alanis Morissette, to playing with The Lowest of The Low and The New Mendicants, McKenzie's versatile background shines through on The Green Door.  This album marks another bold step in The Discarded's evolution. Recorded at Green Door Studios, it embodies a powerful fusion of garage rock, old-school punk, metal, and '60s/'70s rock influences. With production and mixing by John Critchley, the ten original tracks on The Green Door deliver a high-energy experience that compels listeners to move. The album also features standout contributions from Michael McKenzie on guitar, Carmen Toth on background vocals, and Lee Rose of Ace of Wands, whose heavy metal violin adds a unique twist. The striking cover art by illustrator Rachael Muir complements the album's bold and eclectic sound      D I S C O V E R Website: https://www.thediscarded.ca/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thediscarded16Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4Pya3sMf2HDP5Yw7ubZNkb?si=yErcmvaERSmJ5OuSr-iQagYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpuiBO0iPWRbFR6f3MvxBtg/videos This episode is brought to you byGo to BETTERHELP.com/apologue for confidential online counselling.use the code word Apologue for a 7 day free trial Pledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca/shop

Welcome to Episode 45 of This is Not Happening.  An Album of the Month Podcast where in Part 1 we deep dive into an Album that one of us has chosen and in Part 2 we play 'Spin it or Bin it'.  This is where we pick a theme and each select a song that represents that theme. We judge each others selections by asking the question 'Spin It or Bin It'?This month, in Part 1, David bravely returns to the scene a previous crime on our podcast. He brings the second St. Vincent album to a group of people who historically have not reacted well to St. Vincent. Wow. How might this one go? In all seriousness, this is a very different experience to 'Daddy's Home' and a really good chat about the good, the not so good and our collective love of Pop Reggae. This month, in Part 2, Spin It or Bin It, the theme is 'Crying in Aldi' or 'music that makes you cry'. As the theme suggests, things got pretty emotional. Part 1 | St. Vincent | All Born ScreamingI think the full continuum of emotions or lack of emotions is expressed in this review. David brings unconditional love for St. Vincent plus a thinly veiled threat that his wife might tell us off again if we say mean things. The rest of bring various thoughts and ideas to the table that range from the inquisitive to the annoyed.Listen to the album here.Watch some videos here, including the Jimmy Kimmel live performance. We reference the Tape Notes podcast (and also videos) which delve into the making of the album . This is seriously informative and entertaining discussion. Take a look at it here.Part 2 | Spin It or Bin It | 'Crying in Aldi'The most 'in' of 'in jokes' is that Joey often cries to sad songs while doing the big shop in Aldi. He's been banned from 3 stores now and is considering to switching to Lidl. In support of our brother, we've all been researching which songs make us cry and testing them out in various big-box supermarket chains.David chose - 'Already Dead' by Beck.Nolan chose -  'Basket' by Dan Mangan.Guy chose - 'Magnificent'  by Elbow.Joey chose - 'My Girls'   by Animal Collective.See you on Episode 47 ... where 4 old guys talk about Charlie XCX. On this special episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Plouffe get together to talk the artists they own the most albums by in their collections. Starting the episode off, Jamie brings the Beatles album "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band". Their eighth album, released in 1967, the band began work on this album shortly after retiring from touring in 1966. Many publications have cited this album as being a masterpiece in the Beatles catalogue, and Rolling Stone has named it both the #1 (2003, 2013) and the #24 (2020) album of all time. Bell's pick, Dan Mangan's "Being Somewhere", is his seventh studio album, released in 2022. A nice mix of folk and indie rock, the album was produced by OneDirection guitarist Drew Brown. The single "Fire Escape" had a music video that accompanied it featuring the actor Steven Ogg, perhaps best remembered for playing the character Trevor Philips in Grand Theft Auto V. Finally, Plouffe's pick, the Red Hot Chili Peppers "Californication", their seventh album, released in 1999. An album that was an unfortunate victim of the Loudness War of the late 90s to mid 2000s, the album was the first to include the guitarist John Frusciante in several years. After coming back to the band after nearly dying from a severe drug addiction and a house fire, John's return marked a new period of activity for the band, and they went on to record two more highly regarded albums in the next six years. From this album, the single Scar Tissue earned them a Grammy award. What can we glean about each host from the artists they religiously collect? What will the boys have to say about each record? Come along and find out!

It's been an amazing Season 4 here at Hidden Track. We've had visits with an astounding array of inspired artists, ranging from local heroes to global greats; from a reigning Polaris Prize winner to a newly minted Grammy Award winner; from hip-hop to hardcore punk to homespun folk. It's been such a wild 2023! So wild, in fact, that we felt the need to do a special episode to wrap up the season.   Given the daunting task of summarizing such an incredible season, Grant decided to call in a little help! For this year-end episode, Grant Stovel is joined by Hidden Track producer Scott Zielsdorf to help share some great stories and songs from amongst this season's 21 episodes.   In particular, this collection of magical moments zeroes in on the idea of connecting to something larger through music -- whether that's connecting with family and friends, with community, with humanity at large, connecting with your own inner sense of humanity, even connecting with your true artistic self. That yearning to connect is often the catalyst that compels musicians to create, to express, to be part of something.   Music can be a vector for connection in amazing ways -- as we hear in this episode! With memorable stories and songs from the likes of William Prince, Tanika Charles, Arlo Maverick, Wendy McNeill, Dan Mangan, F*cked Up, Young Fathers, Aysanabee, Andy Shauf, Kid Koala & Leilani, Alex Cuba, and July Talk.   Thank you for being with us in 2023! And we thank all of our guests for being so generous with their time and their hearts. All the best for 2024, and we can't wait to share Hidden Track Season 5 with you!    Host: Grant Stovel | Producer: Scott Zielsdorf | Music: Doug Hoyer | Graphics: Shaun Friesen   The Hidden Track Podcast is made possible by the generous contributions of our donors. Dan Mangan | It's Cool to Care

Dan Mangan is fond of summing up his whole approach to a creative life in music with a simple axion: "It's cool to care."  Dan models that approach in everything he does. Whether he's starting his own label, Madic Records, or co-founding community concert platform, Side Door Access; acting as a longtime vocal advocate for the de-stigmatization of discussions around mental health; or through his countless epic live performances over the years and seven albums to date... it's very clear that Dan cares, and he doesn't mind who knows it.  Ever since he first burst out of the Vancouver scene with his debut album, nearly two decades back, Dan's been deeply interested in trying to involve people in not just his music, but what music can do; drawing people into that shared experience. Sometimes he's bringing his dynamic range all the way down to whisper-quiet, making audiences lean in closer. Sometimes - as on the giant Going Somewhere tour which brought him to Alberta in Fall 2023 - it's sending out a phone number to fans and asking them to text him their song requests before the shows. The point is, he cares about those moments of real human connection, and he hopes that you think it's cool to care, too.  Dan's latest Juno-nominated and Polaris Prize-shortlisted album Being Somewhere is a distillation of his whole ethos. And this autumn, he brought some of that music to CKUA.  Amidst the stacks of vinyl and shellac in CKUA's legendary music library, Dan shared an insightful and occasionally hilarious conversation, and performed beautiful, intimate, solo acoustic versions of two songs: Being Somewhere standout "Fire Escape" and as his latest, a single called "Say When." The Hidden Track Podcast is produced by CKUA Radio and made possible by the generous contributions of our donors. This is DJ Samer and you're listening to the 114th episode of the Pangea Podcast. This month's mix is courtesy of long time friend and supporter, Chris Bingham aka DJ*B.  Chris made a name for himself DJing in Arizona and small parties with me in the Southern California area in the early 2000s.  We became friends and production partners, and if you look you will find some originals and remixes that we did for some pretty fine underground labels.  The fact of the matter is that when Chris spins, he has a good sound, so here is DJ*B as our featured guest this month. Also, be sure to check out our newest release on my Pangea label by the UK's ‘thebassmonkey' called “Malaba”, with outstanding remixes from Seth Vogt, Rob Benninger and Hansgod. The tracks all hit the Beatport Top 20 upon release.  And last but not least , be sure to leave a comment about the show on my Instagram page @djsamer_pangea … now on to the mix! 2 time Juno Award Winning Canadian Singer/Songwriter Dan Mangan joins me to talk about the roles of vulnerability, honesty, determination and grit in bringing our art into the world. We talk about how he ‘made it' as a musician in a landscape that is oversaturated with incredible talent no matter which way you look, the importance of creating a vehicle to carry your work into the world and he reflects on the approach he took to building his career - which ultimately allowed him to to work with the record label of his dreams (Arts & Crafts Feist, Broken Social Scene) and build a deeply connected relationship with his ever growing fanbase. Dan is a deeply grounded and all-round garden variety good dude. He has some incredible insights about what it takes to bravely express our art as it comes through us without adding all the pretense. He muses about how he feels that as artists it is our responsibility to put our armour down first, to inspire and free each other in the process. Dan's music comes from that deep, soulful grounded place of magic - where all truly great music and art comes from. In it we find painfully, gorgeously said truths about the hopeful joys, the earnest, longing, reaching of youth and the impossible agonies, and incredulous bittersweet defeat of a life fully lived. Lyrics that will make you close your eyes to savour the delicious weight of their truth, all sung to you by his commanding yet gentle voice that is all at once approachable, gritty, knowing, uncertain, soothing, yearning & familiar. He's able to access this kind of magic for making his songs for a lot of reasons which will become obvious to you as you hear him talk. But I will say this; I feel like we can all learn a lot from Dan. He has figured out how to, as he puts it, ‘put his armour down first' he fully shares his gifts without pretense, which has the beautiful side effect of inviting listeners and fans even closer to their own hearts.   Dan realized the importance of being himself on stage early on in his career. Reflecting on what kind of person he wanted to be he realized he didn't want to be a ‘rockstar' on stage he wanted to be an approachable dude -  he wanted to be himself and present to the magic he created with the audience. That decision to remain the truest version of himself may have ironically set him on a path of actually becoming the rockstar that he is today. Dan Mangan is the most humble non rock-star rock-star you may ever meet and I think you are going to get a lot out of this interview. SOME THINGS DAN AND I TALK ABOUT -How when he was first starting out he didn't think he was ‘very good' (that was crazy for me to hear, especially because i was there… and he was great)-Imposter Syndrome being at the root of humanity glitching-Why live concerts have the power to unite us in such profound ways. -The magical thing he intentionally brings to his live shows. -How it is the artist's job to put down their armour and go first. And how that can inspire all kinds of magic in people's lives -How (and why) great music or art can make you laugh and cry in the same minute and leave you feeling as light as air which reminds you that the pros of existence do outweigh the cons-How truly feeling the lows not just the highs in life helps him stay in gratitude mode not to take anything for granted -The very important thing he realized early on in his career that helped him orient himself to choices and actions that would help him to build a sustainable career with lasting success -Not waiting for his big moment or to be discovered, and what to do instead-How it can be easy to fall into the trap of ‘waiting until you make' it to share your best work with the world and how that is the very thing that can prevent ‘making it'-The importance of discovering your gifts and really building on them. How he felt he had shortcomings as a musician and perhaps because of those was able to realize what he was extremely good at - connecting with large groups of people and lean into that. -What it feels like to start to get famous/have your dreams come true (It's not what you might think)-The importance of internally clocking our self worth rather than seeking external validation. Please share the show with a friend and if you are moved to make a financial contribution to the production of this podcast, THANK YOU here is the link for our PatreonAbout Dan Mangan:Dan Mangan is a two-time JUNO award winning & two-time Polaris Music Prize listed musician and songwriter.
