This episode of BOOKSPO is brought to you by COPIBEC, and their new three-part podcast series COPYRIGHT ACT: A CENTURY OF STORIES, a fascinating journey through the 100-year history of copyright in Canada—and even beyond it. Rich, immersive, and also FUN (!), COPYRIGHT ACT: A CENTURY OF STORIES, a series funded by the Government of Canada, is available now wherever you get your podcasts. Visit https://bit.ly/bookspo-copyright-act to start listening now. Many thanks to our sponsor! Suzy Krause's I THINK WE'VE BEEN HERE BEFORE was a total word-of-mouth book for me, a book I picked up because a trusted friend promised I would love it—and I did! A comforting book about the end of world—can you even fathom such a thing? It's a novel that Suzy pitches—most remarkably—as (wait for it…) Iain Reid's I'M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS meets Stuart McLean's VINYL CAFE DIARIES. Cozy and unsettling at once. Okay! And just as much as I loved the book, I adored our conversation. Suzy talks to me about how her initial BOOKSPO pick was Iain Reid's I'M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS, but when she realized Ashley Tate had picked it already back in Season 1, she went with Stuart McLean instead. Both authors, she explains, give her a kind of permission as a writer, Reid to get a little weird, and McLean to lean into her instincts to see the good in people, the possibility of community. Her characters, she tells me, are inspired by the kind of people she grew up around, and my favourite character in the book just might be a checker at her local grocery store….I'm looking forward to hanging out with Suzy IRL next week at Type Books Junction (2887 Dundas St. W) where I will be moderating a discussion between her and Marissa Stapley about their wonderful new novels. Event begins at 7pm. Join us!Marlen and Hilda Jorgensen's family has received two significant pieces of news: one, Marlen has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Two, a cosmic blast is set to render humanity extinct within a matter of months. It seems the coming Christmas on their Saskatchewan farm will be their last.Preparing for the inevitable, they navigate the time they have left together. Marlen and Hilda have channeled their energy into improbably prophetic works of art. Hilda's elderly father receives a longed-for visitor from his past, her sister refuses to believe the world is ending, and her teenaged nephew is missing. All the while, her daughter struggles to find her way home from Berlin with the help of an oddly familiar stranger. For everyone, there's an unsettling feeling that this unprecedented reality is something they remember.Suzy Krause is the bestselling author of Sorry I Missed You and Valencia and Valentine. She grew up on a little farm in rural Saskatchewan and now lives in Regina, where she writes novels inspired by crappy jobs, creepy houses, personal metaphorical apocalypses, and favorite songs. He eventually transitioned away from site work and now runs his own business. In this conversation, Stuart and Russ discuss the challenges and pressures faced by tradespeople in the construction industry, including mental health issues. April is celebrated as “National Humor Month.” It is also the only month of the year that begins with a Fool's Day, a day celebrated in many countries with sanctioned frivolity and pranks ever since the 1500s. So today I want to lighten the moment and read some humorous poetry by Ogden Nash, Philip Larkin, Shel Silverstein, "Anonymous," Pamela Ayres, and Stuart McLean.
Dana Meise is an amazing Prince George resident who holds the world record for enduring the longest hike in history (over 21,000km) that took him 10 years to accomplish. When his father lost the ability to walk, Dana was inspired to hike the entirety of the Trans Canada Trail and began his journey in 2008. Dana travelled throughout all three Canadian territories and 10 provinces in one of the most epic and wild journeys imaginable on the Trans Canada Trail, becoming the first person in the world to touch the country's three coasts by foot as he journeyed from the Atlantic to the Pacific and finally up to the Arctic Ocean. In total, Dana went through 27 pairs of hiking boots and finished his extraordinary journey in November of 2018 when he reached Tuktoyaktuk in the arctic. Using his now-intimate knowledge of Canada from coast to coast to coast, he has recently started a podcast and plans to write a book and start a docuseries in the future. Along the journey, Dana built relationships with Stuart McLean, Walter Gretzky, a very unique adventurer from Belgium and had many experiences with the vast wildlife, wilderness and residents of Canada. Dana truly is the epitome of a passion, strength and determination. Episode 15! Holy mother of pearl; who'd ever thunk it? Thank you for being a part of this fun, zany, welcoming little vibrant community called Graventown. As a very special guest for this monumental episode, I was very lucky to connect with Danny Michel. The only good thing about not shopping in record stores anymore is you won't have to figure out what genre to look for Danny under. If that were the case, you could try looking under, rock, pop, folk, world or even classical. His own self-described musical A.D.D. has kept his music fresh for decades. Maybe it has something to do with being born next to a candy factory, or his ambidextrous brain, but his thoughtful lyrics & charming performances have earned a devoted fan base, multiple nominations for Junos, The Polaris Prize, CBC's "Heart Of Gold", and most recently winning the CFMA's "Producer of the year" and "Oliver Schroder Pushing the Boundaries" Awards. But Danny considers his career highlights to be the unique real life moments like performing for Jane Goodall's 85th birthday party, touring with Stuart Mclean and working with charities close to his heart. We had a nice long chat about music, covid, spotify, genre-hopping, his own self made super intricate tyco car track in house called #danlandiagardensspeedway and recording songs on a Russian icebreaker with astronaut Chris Hadfield. Follow Danny's musical adventures at his website. Follow me on SM under @gravencanada! I do a live music show every Thursday at 9 PM EST on Instagram Live called Graventown - come hang. Following this summer’s big band-to-ballad exploration that is One More JAZZ Thing, One More FOLK Thing falls in line with another five tracks that span from old-timey upbeats to slow-folk styles, and everything in between. “Clap along with this happy, little bluegrass love song,” Adams says of the album’s first preview, “How Do I Love You?” — a lively duet spotlighting sounds of the fiddle, banjo, and guitar. “Redbird” lands as another bluegrass-based tune, while “Hold On” and “Last One In Love” slow the pace as an intimate, personal anthem and a whimsical yet poignant look at love, respectively. “This is a cautionary tale about paying it forward,” Quarrington reveals about the album's closer, “Big Bump (At The End Of The Road).” “The track has a gospel feel to it, including a killer Hammond organ solo.” One More FOLK Thing is the second in this year’s three-part EP project released via Sonic Peach Music that focuses on specific genres of music through the lens of this spectacularly diverse and uniquely talented pair. The journeys within the genres are deftly traversed by the accomplished co-writers and artists; with Quarrington and Adams — the former an acclaimed jazz guitarist, composer, and songwriter with hundreds of multi-genre credits to his name, and the latter an artist long-lauded for her work in theatre, movies, radio, and corporate entertainment. The duo have been making music together in some form or another for the better part of two decades; Q&A quite literally holds 100 years of professional experience between them; the results have included but are not limited to a long-held run as Paper Moon, a nostalgic jazz duo, and their first extended work together took place in 2005 when Stuart McLean commissioned Quarrington to compose what would become Vinyl Cafe: The Musical — Quarrington sang the role of ‘Dave’ and Adams ‘Morley,’ ‘Stephanie,’ and ‘Sam.’ “The pleasure we took in that project convinced us to work together even more,” they recall. That pleasure is now ours with the release of One More JAZZ Thing, One More FOLK Thing, and One More POP Thing. 'Tis the season for cozy, heartwarming reads, served occasionally with a side of murder. Corene, Fiona, Liz, Sadie, and Virginia discussed books, favourite holiday food and drinks, and of course, argued about which is the best A Christmas Carol adaptation. Books mentioned in this episode: Hark! The Herald Angels Scream, an anthology edited by Christopher Golden, Happy Narwhalidays by Ben Clanton, Murder at the Mayfair Hotel by CJ Archer, Gingerbread by Helen Oyeyemi, and Christmas at the Vinyl Cafe by Stuart McLean. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/keepitfictional/message
In homage to BBC Radio 4’s ‘Desert Island Discs’, our three invited lecturers identify a teaching prop or pedagogy to take to their Treasure Islands, for the cherished face to face contact time with students on campus, together with a luxury item for a bit of downtime from teaching. This episode features: Katherine Whitehurst: Communication & Media Lightbulb moment: ‘clicking through group work’, showing cross-group ideas to promote student engagement Teaching prop or pedagogy: any online platforms that enable collaborative group work and projects to make the above lightbulb moment possible (e.g. MS Teams). Luxury item: if my husband is not an item, I would like to take ‘a kitchen’ to cook as this is how I relax. Matt Murphy: Mechanical, Materials & Aerospace Engineering Lightbulb moment: when it sinks in for students that they are undertaking a real, open-ended professional engineering project, and that staff trust them to take responsibility for their own success. Teaching prop or pedagogy: focusing on what the student will be doing (Thomas Shuell, 1986); design activities first and fit in lectures around the activities, not the other way round! Luxury item: Liverpool ‘urban cycling safaris’ modified to explore our treasure island. Mathew Flynn: Music Industry Lighbulb moment: focus on what students need to know at that point, rather than what I think I need to tell them! Teaching prop or pedagogy: all we need is a marker pen and provocation to engage students in worthwhile conversation. Luxury item: surprise, surprise, it’s music: my Spotify account. Any sparks? Post podcast, we talked lots about how we listen to music, how Spotify has changed the way we listen to music and the way in which vinyl is reclaiming the ritual of listening in our home. And a Canadian storyteller, Stuart McLean, humorous VinylCafe stories whose humour Katherine recommends.

Why does Joss Whedon have a monopoly on the market of strong female characters in film and television? Does artistic intent matter? Can you hide behind the label of satire if your actions have real world consequences? What does it mean to be Canadian? What is our cultural Identity? Is there a generational shift happening, or are we just to spread out to be a monolith? who's good at making fun of Canada? All these questions and more are tackled by the DTP crew this week. We would apologize for such a long episode, but we'd have to feel there was something to feel sorry for, and we don't. Full disclosure, this is not an episode of The Show Show! Slaney's on some beach somewhere, and Sweets is snowbound. Please enjoy some thoughts on a hero of the form, the wonderful Stuart McLean. Tweet your thoughts to @showshowpodcast!
