Regis and Function's first mix in over 10 years is a unique paean to Silent Servant, heavy on unreleased material. When it came time for RA to compile our Albums of the 2010s, one record with a tauntingly limited availability of 500 copies was never in doubt: Sandwell District's era-defining 'Feed-Forward'. Encompassing Karl O'Connor (Regis), Peter Sutton (Female), David Sumner (Function) and Juan Mendez (Silent Servant), Sandwell District had the underground in a vice grip for over a decade. The collective imploded in 2013, with Sumner and O'Connor's relationship appearing beyond repair. And yet, an unlikely second phase is here, featuring imminent comeback LP 'End Beginnings' and their return to the RA Podcast after 16 years. In 2023, the trio of Function, Regis and Silent Servant had been performing and laying down new material before the latter's shock death last January. It's in the shadow of loss that this unique mix was forged. Founded in 2002 as a spiritual sister to seminal Downwards, Sandwell truly began to hit its straps in the late '00s, as shadow-stalking cuts sliced through clubland orthodoxy like a switchblade. In parallel, the label's artwork—a noir recombination of Burroughs cut-ups, DIY zines and arthouse amour that Silent Servant made his own—helped fortify a movement which placed an aesthetic premium on grit, grain and sadism. By the early 2010s, this fixation on the dark arts had utterly permeated the mood inside techno's masonic temples. Labels like Blackest Ever Black, Stroboscopic Artefacts, Avian and Modern Love were in their pomp, razorwire legends like Severed Heads and Chris & Cosey benefited from second winds, and it was briefly a jailable offence to not have a press photo in black and white. 'Feed-Forward' was the exceptional coronating statement. RA.978 features a stack of unheard recordings from each of the trio, as well as close allies Stefanie Parnow and Tropic of Cancer, while also gathering many of Silent Servant's all-time favourite songs, including Psychic TV, Grace Jones and Galaxie 500. It's a strikingly vulnerable listen, one without many parallels on the Podcast. We're glad to run it. Read more and find the tracklist here: ra.co/podcast/978

Cyborg Amok started in 2019 as a recording project comprised of vocalist and keyboardist Greg Bullock and his son, drummer Brydon Bullock. With a focus on performing Cyborg Amok songs in the live environment, the duo set out to write, record and present their unique music to the world. On this episode of Songs of Our Lives, it's Whitney Johnson! Whitney did something I've always dreamed about - releasing two different albums (under two separate names no less!) on the same day, and both of them are fabulous. We talk about that and some other sound projects before diving into all the sides of Sonny Sharrock, Prince's all-time greatness, unrepentant love for ABBA, Psychic TV destroying us, the Steve Winwood hypetrain, and FINALLY someone's favorite song is also my favorite song, so we had a moment at the end. Plus more, obviously!Listen to all of Whitney's picks HERE“Hav”“Stena”Whitney on InstagramSongs of Our Lives is a podcast series hosted by Brad Rose of Foxy Digitalis that explores the music that's made us and left a certain mark. Genesis P-Orridge was a performance artist, neo Pagan, Industrial music innovator, the co-founder of COUM, Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV and an arch provocateur. He was variously described as a wrecker of civilisation, transgressive and blasphemous, accused of being a Satanist and of sexually abusing his children (a lie - in fact he was a loving father and grandfather), and claimed to be a threat to society. He could be both very alarming and very kind. In later life Genesis became infamous with attempts to unite as a “pandrogyne”, a single entity, with partner Lady Jaye through the use of extreme surgical body modification intended to make them physically resemble one another Filmaker David Charles Rodrigues, director of S/HE IS STILL HERE an extraordinary, moving film based around interviews made in the last months of Genesis's life, came to the Bureau to talk about the Cut Up technique, William Burroughs, Bryon Gysin, The Exploding Galaxy, industrial music, the Satanic Panic and much more in the life and death of a deeply countercultural artist. #genesis p-orridge #throbbinggristle #coum #psychictv #thetempleofpsychicyouth #industrialmusic #templeofpsychicyouth #pandrogyne #coseyfannitutti #chrisandcosey #williamburroughs #bryongysin #cutup #thecutuptechnique #ica #censorship #transgressive #satanicpanic #ladyjaye #thexxplodinggalaxy
This week, we sit down with Adrian from Luster to dive deep into their creative process and the unique dynamics of the band. We discuss how they manage to blend emotional vulnerability with a sound that's evolved over the years. Highlights Include: The surprising fact that, despite playing shoegaze the most, it's what Adrian listens to the least! The origins of Luster as a "bedroom project," with Adrian and Alvin sending ideas back and forth, allowing the rest of the band to contribute at their own pace. How Adrian and Alvin's friendship began 10+ years ago at California shows, not as childhood friends, but as kindred spirits shaped by a shared culture and humor. Adrian's thoughts on embracing emotion in music, especially within Latin culture, where expressing feelings is often discouraged. Why moving to a small town of just 400 people has given Adrian the peace and space he needs to be creative. Reflections on the band's emo-adjacent sound and how Adrian's emotional experiences influence his lyrics. Plus, Adrian shares stories of growing up listening to everything from Nu Metal to Slayer, and the band tattoos that have left a lasting mark: Morrissey, Unbroken, Psychic TV, and Swans. This episode is filled with honest insights and reflections from a band that started with a simple mission—to play music with friends—and has checked off dream collaborations along the way. Don't miss out on this amazing conversation!

Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (born Neil Andrew Megson; 22 February 1950 – 14 March 2020) was an English singer-songwriter, musician, poet, performance artist, visual artist, and occultist who rose to notoriety as the founder of the COUM Transmissions artistic collective and lead vocalist of seminal industrial band Throbbing Gristle. They were also a founding member of Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth occult group, and fronted the experimental pop rock band Psychic TV. Genesis was my mentor in magick and life for over seven intensive years. This conversation was the last I had with her, while she was in hospital with leukemia before her death. I released it on the podcast shortly after recording it, but since it was recorded on an iPhone with no external mic, the audio was very hard to hear in parts. This remastered version restores the conversation and give it the proper treatment it deserves. Please enjoy this very, very special episode. Today I'm joined by Anna Krivolapova (@AnaKrivolapova), the author of a short story collection, Incurable Graphomania (2023). These 14 stories include themes of "voyeurism, paranoia, defense contractors, Russian stewardesses, venomous WASPs, and more". We discuss some of her literary, cultural, and paranoiacal influences. Anna reads several passages including an entire story - my favorite from the collection - The Reagan-Blair Manifesto. Along the way we discuss various themes familiar to listeners of the show, including McGowan and the PTK thesis, video games, school shooters, hypnosis, and a few new topics such as Russian culture, the female and general literary scene, sus international adoptions. I first met Alaura when we did an online workshop for the South London Arts Lab in October 2020. It was a practical exploration of Stream of Consciousness writing. It was called “Telling The Stories We Were Always Told To Keep Secret”, where we were encouraged to delve into our memory to write about things that have a hold over us, maybe things we are ashamed of, afraid of, whatever that hold may be. This had a very profound effect on me and I have to say took my interest in the importance of mindset to a bit of a higher ground. This is one string to her wide reaching bow. She's a multidisciplinary artist, teacher, writer, speaker, visual and sound artist. She was also a pivotal member of Psychic TV for 10 years, being married to Genese P-Orridge from 1981 to around 1992, before they separated. This is a fabulous conversation about her formative years, getting into 23 Skidoo, then Psychic TV, how she's navigated her way through the good and bad times, how she herself has evolved and the next decisive chapter in her life.https://www.heysunday.co/i-wanna-jump-like-dee-deeI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. In this episode, we delve into England's Hidden Reverse—the history of the occult industrial bands Coil, Current 93, Nurse With Wound, Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, and the monumental spells they cast on music and popular occulture. Our intrepid guide on this journey is Scottish writer David Keenan, a literary and musical polymath known for his innovative contributions to the UK cultural scene. Born in April 1971, Keenan has worn many hats, from running Glasgow's iconic record shop, Volcanic Tongue, to shaping the dialogue around experimental music genres in The Wire magazine. As an author, he has written four critically acclaimed novels, with his debut, "This Is Memorial Device", bagging the Collyer Bristow Award for Debut Fiction. Keenan's seminal work "England's Hidden Reverse", the focus of this episode, is an in-depth exploration of the English esoteric musical underground, featuring exclusive biographies of the genre-defying bands Coil, Current 93, Nurse With Wound and many more. Based on exclusive interviews and privileged access to the bands' personal archives, "England's Hidden Reverse" unveils the unique cultural, artistic, and sexual milieu of the English underground. This is a TREMENDOUS episode that focuses not only on the mentioned bands, but on Keenan's own occult experiences and THE VERITABLE NATURE OF MAGICK ITSELF. ENJOY!!!!!! In part 2, we get into Drew joining Coil and go all the way thru to his current solo output.

Wesley Doyle in conversation with David Eastaugh http://jawbonepress.com/conform-to-deform/ Along with Factory, Mute, and Creation, Some Bizzare was the vanguard of outsider music in the 1980s. The label's debut release reads like a who's who of electronic music, featuring early tracks from Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, Blancmange, and THE THE, while over the next decade its roster would include artists such as Marc Almond, Cabaret Voltaire, Einstürzende Neubauten, Foetus, Swans, Coil, and Psychic TV. For a time, Some Bizzare was the most exciting independent record label in the world, but the music is only half of the story. Self-styled label boss Stevo Pearce's unconventional dealings with the industry are legendary. Sometimes they were playful, other times less so; either way, he was a force to be reckoned with. His preternatural ability to spot talent meant his label was responsible for releasing some of the decade's most forward-thinking, transgressive, and influential music.
My final 1983 gig-going-entry recaps a couple of shows I took in during a crazy/nuts four-day trip to NYC. While I will be discussing the performances by hardcore titans The Circle Jerks and post-Throbbing Gristle offshoot Psychic TV, I'll also be looking at the madcap trip to Manhattan as a whole, recounting the hijinks that MZ, Miss B, myself, and others got up to. If you've heard or read EP 25 on the Flipper show at Fryfogle's, then you'll have somewhat of an idea of what to expect.Tune in for destroyed hotel rooms; terrified cousins; "Peace, Love and Groove!"; Danceteria bathroom hallucinations; Brooke Shields' husband, Broadway Bob; and pterodactyls and manifestations. You can also read the original blog entries for The Circle Jerks and for the Psychic TV show on the mylifeinconcert.com blog. Next On Stage –> I am jumping back further into the past as I recall a cabaret show that happened between my first and second “official” gigs (Roxy Music at the London Arena on February 5, 1975 and Bob Seger at the London Gardens on May 19, 1978). I saw the cabaret in Portsmouth, England, in August 1977, and it featured early-60s popster Susan Maughan, she of the 1962 hit, “Bobby's Girl,” and possibly the legendary Tessie O'Shea. I had initially planned to discuss it as part of upcoming compilation episode but have instead decided to make it a stand-alone episode. The EP's Special Guest is my 96-year-old mother—we'll call her Vera Various Artists—who attended the cabaret along with me and my late father. My mum shares her vague memories of the evening, including that she feels the legendary Tessie O'Shea was on the bill. If my mother is right, then boy do I wish I could remember that. I wouldn't have known who she was then but I sure do now. We do both remember humourist Pam Ayers and the Famous People Players being part of the show. My mother also recalls the venue itself, the Portsmouth The Hippodrome but also The King's Theatre in Southsea, as she grew up in Petersfield, but later moved to Portsmouth after marrying my dad, and both my elder siblings were born there. In the interview, she discusses listening to the radio as well as records in the UK as a girl in the ‘30s, and also music and live shows she enjoyed after to moving to Canada in the mid-50s and onwards. I also talk about my experiences on this trip in the ultimate UK punk year—1977—amid the Queen's Silver Jubilee. Tune in for dangerous radio batteries, hanging out in British record stores to hear the latest releases, what double album of my mum's drove me nuts in the ‘70s, punk rock mania, not seeing The Sex Pistols, and what Ethel Merman was really like live. That's all coming up in Episode 31, Concert no. 001.5, entitled UK 1977: VA's Mum on Ethel Merman and Susan Maughan at the Portsmouth Hippodrome and the Music of Her Life + My UK Trip Amid the Year of the Punk Rock Explosion and Silver Jubilee mylifeinconcert.com
This is the big one! THE ultimate! The single most anticipated show I ever attended, when I—along with my co-hort Miss B—and 60,000 other fans, all of whom who were going Absolutely Freakin' Bananas, moseyed on down to a packed CNE Exhibition Stadium during a sweltering Labour Day weekend in 1983, for David Bowie. He was on his global Serious Moonlight tour for his worldwide smash hit album, Let's Dance, with the great Rough Trade opening the show and warming up the troops. On the exact same weekend a year earlier, I had seen The Clash at this same venue (EP 18). Now I was back and seeing an even more hotly anticipated show. And he surpassed my expectations. In Part One, Episode 29A, Changes: Bowie, The ‘70s, and Me—a prelude to this episode about the show—I look back on first hearing David Bowie on the cusp of 1973 as well as take an in-depth journey through his recording career, from 1964's “Liza Jane” through 1983's Let's Dance, but also examine his impact on me and the larger culture throughout the rest of that decade. In this Part 2, join me in returning back to this CNE show on that gorgeous Labour Day weekend in 1983—ending one of the most memorable summers of my young life with an unforgettable climax. Tune in for being caught up in the rush of crushing crowds, Hamlet references, bamboo steamers among the Bowie masses, and the most exciting show of my life. Go to the mylifeinconcert.com blog to read the original entry. Next On Stage –> My final 1983 gig-going-entry recaps a couple of shows I took in during a crazy/nuts four-day trip to NYC. If you've heard or read EP 25 on the Flipper show at Fryfogle's, then you'll have somewhat of an idea of what to expect. Tune in for destroyed hotel rooms, terrified cousins, "Peace, Love and Groove," Danceteria bathroom hallucinations, Brooke Shields' husband: Broadway Bob, and Pterodactyls and Manifestations in Episode 30, Back Against the Wall and Discopravity: The Circle Jerks at the Reggae Lounge on Wednesday November 26th, and Psychic TV at Danceteria on Thursday November 17, both in New York City, 1983.Click on the links above to read the original blog entries at mylifeinconcert.com.
Despite releasing pivotal songs and albums by The The, Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Blancmange, Coil, Swans, Psychic TV, Cabaret Voltaire, Einstürzende Neubauten, and my personal favourites, Scraping Foetus of the Wheel, the story of Some Bizarre Records and their maverick founder Stevo Pearce, has been largely forgotten. But wait? What's that? The music journalist Wesley Doyle is about to release a book? Entitled Conform To Deform: The Weird & Wonderful World Of Some Bizarre? Out February 14th, with contributions from everyone involved, including Stevo himself? I should get Wesley on the podcast really. Oh, here he is! Whether as a touring guitarist for the avant-garde rockers, Psychic TV, or producer for artists like Boy George, Lenny Kaye, and Pharoahe Monch, Jeff Berner makes a safe, creative space for those around him to make great art. This week, we trace Jeff's life from first falling for “Sunshine of Your Love,” to building his studio career, performing in Russia with punk legend Genesis P-Orridge – and producing, performing on and brilliantly wedging an electric bouzouki into my new album, Constellations.

Paul 'Bee' Hampshire - Into A Circle, Futon, Getting The Fear, & Panache in conversation with David Eastaugh thebeenow.com Bee left school at 16 to form his first band the Danse Society. He moved to London to join a pop band, which really did become big in Japan. Bee spent his time there doing tours, TV shows, and dodging crazy fans. During his club kid days in London, he ran the door at London's first fetish club SKIN2. Shifting his focus back to the UK, Bee hooked up with Psychic TV. He teamed up with the remnants of Southern Death Cult to form Getting the Fear, which eventually became the indie duo, Into A Circle. At the start of the nineties, he spent a brief stint in NYC before moving to Asia permanently and settling in Thailand.

This episode I talk with Alice Genese & Shaune Pony Heath; two friends who would meet on Tuesdays to talk and informally play some music in their living rooms. Those meetings eventually became the band OV Stars. Alice talks to me about how she grew up a block from the legendary venue, Maxwell's, in Hoboken, NJ. She began her music career playing bass with Gut Bank and Sexpod. She eventually met up with Genesis P-Orridge and played bass for Psychic TV for the last 20 years.Shaune discusses growing up in Pretoria, South Africa and how the music scene was the ultimate in DIY, sometimes meaning you had to build your own stage from tires and soil,Alice and Shaune had written so much music together that recording was the obvious next step. Shaune tells me about being terrified but how being immediately thrown in the deep end didn't give him time to overthink the process. So go check out the OV Stars EP, Tuesdays, on Bandcamp. Dorothy Max Prior - Rema Rema, Psychic TV & The Ragroof - in conversation with David Eastaugh Member of Rema Rema. Under her first name, she is best known for a pop single released on Industrial Records which claimed she was 19 when in fact she was already 27. The other musicians on this record were Genesis P-Orridge and Alex Fergusson who were shortly to form Psychic TV with Peter Christopherson. They apparently asked Dorothy to play in the group, but she declined and didn't join the group until many years later when she was credited under her middle name Max. Dorothy only stayed in Psychic TV for about a year. In between this, she was in punk-pop rockabilly band first called The Weekend Swingers and then The El Trains.

Welcome adventurous listeners to the 19th episode of Anechoic Chamber. This is the second part of our two-part exposition of the work and thoughts of our guest Andrew McKenzie. Working since the 1970s, McKenzie is particularly known for his pioneering efforts to expand the vocabulary of recorded sound, which itself expanded into a mission to enhance all modalities of perception - this has been carried out with his flagship project The Hafler Trio as well as in collaboration with artists such as Clock DVA, The Anti Group, and Psychic TV. Though certainly not the only arrow in his McKenzie's quiver, his extensive performing and recording career has both informed, and been informed by, a host of other creative activities drawing upon knowledge from both techno-scientific and esoteric realms: working as a computer programmer before (as he reminds me) there were “pictures” on computer screens. Teaching Tibetan language and calligraphy (and some Sanskrit). Writing books, editing video, designing everything from graphics to instructional materials, and working as both a hypnotherapist and psychotherapist. One of his more recent and significant ventures, dubbed by him “complementary education,” fuses insights gleaned from all of these distinct experiences, and involves conducting 14-hour long sound workshops aimed at re-discovering the creative process in a world obsessed with nominalization (in other words, with the act of devaluing a process by conceptualizing it as a thing or object). After fruitful residencies in the Netherlands, Sweden, Iceland and elsewhere, McKenzie now resides in Estonia, from which he joined our host for the following conversation. This comes with the disclaimer that, despite capturing several hours worth of useful material for these next couple episodes, we still emerge with little more than a snapshot of a legitimately eclectic and evolving personality.
