This week on the pod, after catching up on wild weekend adventures, we're drawing inspiration from one of our favourite instagram follows, @secondhandhuns, and looking at our lives through the lens of our younger selves, and all the things little Lauren and Chloe would love (and never guess!) about our current selves... It's actually such a wholesome little gratitude exercise we recommend everyone should do along with us! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Lo cremoso...Avena. ¡Mal pensados! Why did rock music fall out of the mainstream?
The Ghost Furnace - Episode 151 "The Sheboygan Sound" This week we cover an almost forgotten and contemporarily maligned genre of music which had the rare distinction of burning bright enough to influence Rock & Roll greats, while remaining dim enough to fly under the radar of the average listener. For those of you who have been asking us about this rise and fall of this movement, we finally have enough information together to do this story in a way that does justice to the people who lived it, and live on, if only on record players and in our dreams. If you have a story you'd like to share, you can find us on Instagram, YouTube and TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com
On this episode, Joel and Chris dive into Journeyman Distillery, a Michigan craft whiskey operation with bootlegger roots, a factory-turned-distillery story, and a philosophy built on organic grains and craftsmanship. We taste their Pit Spitter Cherry Whiskey, Last Feather Rye, and cask strength expressions, each one telling a story that hits like a classic rock anthem. Plus, Bill and Johanna Welter share the moments that tested them, the lessons they learned, and why their whiskey isn't just a drink…it's an experience.Listen for music-inspired tasting notes, behind-the-scenes stories, and the human side of crafting award-winning whiskey. To learn more about Journeyman's whiskey visit:https://www.journeyman.com/ Follow us on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram @thewhiskeyrockspodcast for more whiskey reviews, incredible dancing and dad jokes.Whiskey rocks, sip hard!!
New York, 1967. Peak Hippie!

Texas-based rock singer-songwriter Mark Winters is many things; a witty poet, passionate musician, entrepreneur, optimist, family man, and a bonafide rocket scientist. He first picked up a guitar to play a song for his wife on their anniversary. That's when he discovered the joy of connecting with people through music. Mark combines music, poetry, a science background, and love for his community to form his signature sound, “rock with a positive vibe.”His musical roots are in rock, blues rock, and pop, and John Mayer, Tom Petty, and Jason Mraz are significant influences. “My music starts from a place of poetry and creative inspiration, and I use my ‘rocket-scientist brain' to find structures that help me explore that initial burst of inspiration and feeling – like writing haikus, my favorite! My grandmother taught me to express myself through poetry and I'm thankful to her for setting me on this creative and expressive path.”Mark has a degree in Aerospace, Aeronautical, and Astronautical Engineering, and his math and science background guides his musical explorations. He likes taking complex things such as emotions and expressing them in a way that's easy to understand. Balancing his right-brained creativity with his analytical left-brain is part of a life-long journey; music is one more place where he can explore this balance. Mark Winters Vroom Vroom Veer Show Summary Jeffery and Mark discussed Mark's music career and upcoming tours. Mark shared details about his "Good Vibes Highway Tour" in the spring and a fall tour, as well as plans to release new music in March and May. He expressed his passion for both music and his previous career as an aerospace engineer, describing how music has become a fulfilling passion project for him. Mark's Diverse Interests and Career Mark shared his diverse background, including his studies as an aerospace engineer and his passion for poetry, which he pursued as a personal hobby with his grandmother. He discussed his work in the aerospace industry, including his experience with simulation design and training for projects like the Apache and F-16 aircraft. Mark also mentioned his appreciation for music and how it played a significant role in his life, regardless of the activity he was engaged in. Mark's Guitar Learning Journey Mark shared his personal story of taking up guitar playing in 2011 as a New Year's resolution to play a song for his wife's anniversary. He approached Steve at Smack Guitars, who agreed to teach him both playing and singing, despite Mark's complete lack of musical experience. Mark chose to learn "What You Give" by Tesla, a song that resonated with him about giving rather than receiving, though he acknowledged it was challenging both to play and sing. Music's Power to Connect Mark shared his experience of learning to play guitar and performing a song for his wife at a restaurant, which led to a profound emotional connection and realization of music's power to create meaningful experiences. He described how he initially struggled with remembering chords and lyrics simultaneously but found a creative solution by hiding them inside an anniversary card. The story concluded with Mark reflecting on how this experience in 2011 changed his perspective on music as a powerful means of connection, prompting him to continue learning guitar. Forming the Band Agave Report Mark shared his experience of forming a band called Agave Report with Manish, a talented musician he met who played guitar and sang beautifully. They recruited a drummer and bass player to form a garage band, with Mark initially taking on the role of lead guitarist and backing vocalist. The band played eclectic covers including songs by The Doors, Eagles, and modern artists like Neon Trees, performing their first show in 2014 or 2015. Mark's Musical Journey and Adaptation Mark shared his musical journey, starting with a band where he struggled to sing certain songs due to personal reasons, leading him to write his own music in 2018. He released his first album in 2019 and faced challenges during a tour when COVID-19 hit, but adapted by performing online. Post-COVID, he focused on acoustic music and connected with other singer-songwriters, eventually growing his audience and performing at venues like the House of Blues Bronze Peacock Room in Houston. Mark emphasized the importance of connecting with his audience and the positive impact his music has had on people's lives. Music Industry Challenges and Opportunities Mark discussed his experiences as a musician, particularly in Houston and Las Vegas, noting the challenges small to mid-sized venues face due to economic viability issues post-COVID. He highlighted the need for musicians to be versatile and self-sufficient, mentioning the importance of community engagement and the DIY approach in the current music industry. There's a belief that after the death of Buddy Holly rock & roll lost its way until the arrival of the Beatles. Early '60s rock was still growing in popularity, but the airwaves were ruled by teen idols, girl groups and novelty songs. However, that's not the full story. Richard Aquila is the author of Rock & Roll in Kennedy's America: A Cultural History of the Early 1960s.

This week's Deeper Roots takes a wide turn down the backroads of American music, delivering a two-hour free form ride through the crossroads where rock, soul, blues, and Americana meet and mingle. We'll be opening the vaults for an eclectic blend honoring the roots while keeping one foot in the groove — where a deep cut from Garland Jeffreys might slide right up against raw King Curtis Memphis soul, a bouncy David Lindley number, or the tight shuffle of a Chess Records blues side. We'll be connecting the dots between decades and genres with warmth and curiosity. Whether it's Louvin-soaked harmonies, road-weary country soul, or the smoky after-hours mood of the juke joint, this week's celebration once more explores the shared DNA of American sound. Tune in for stories between the songs, unexpected transitions, and a handpicked setlist that speaks to both memory and motion — a sonic journey that proves the roots run deep, wide, and ever surprising.

Texas Real Estate Commission - Information About Brokerage Services Blast from the Past, is a special follow up the hosts conversation, in Episode 67 Season 4 about being a Young Boomer or an Old Gen X. The siblings talked about their dad Bob Seemann and Eric specifically talked about how his dad was just an old soul. While Bob was a teen and young adult coming of age in the 1950's he cherished old songs, music and that he just didn't like 'Modern Music' and that "Rock & Roll". Here is the proof in Bob's own voice and speach. From 1955, Robert A. Seemann while a Junior at Ohio State University (the "THE" didn't come until later years), made this recording on a 78 rpm vinyl record. To capture this recording, Eric used a circa 1920's RCA Victor Victrola "His Master's Voice" which he restored in the 1980's. The Victrola was a family heirloom from Dad's Grandfather, which just seemed appropriate. The image in this episodes artwork is our Dad in 1982 on a trip through Canada. Donna Reed and Eric Seemann are both professional real estate agents. Donna lives and works in Tucson Arizona with Keller Williams Southern Arizona while Eric lives and works in San Antonio Texas with Keller Williams Heritage. They are also siblings, and they grew up in a small Northwest Ohio village of Lindsey. Their idyllic small-town childhood laid the foundation for what would become the structure of their lives and careers in real estate. About 70 years ago, The Blues gave birth to two genres of music: R&B (Soul) and Rock & Roll. One made for black listeners, one for white listeners. The United States was segregated back then and Jim Crow and his laws were real! But we've discussed this already. The question is, What is Yacht Rock? This class breaks down Yacht Rock into bite sized pieces, but there are a few rules that you should know. First, Yacht Rock is not a genre, there is no such thing, not for real-for real.Second, Artist that thrive in this “not genre” all these years later still hate the title “Yacht Rock.”There's more, this is just the tip of the iceberg. “Yacht Rock, What it is — is some of the best music ever created, by artist who might surprise you!And if you ready to learn more, press play.

Earlier this year, we lost one of the greatest and most influential chefs ever to ply his trade in the United States, when André Soltner passed away at age 92. On the day the culinary community pay their respects at a celebration of his life in New York City, we wanted to share this previously unaired conversation with Chef Soltner, recorded in 2016 as part of Andrew's research for his book Chefs, Drugs, and Rock & Roll. André Soltner was of course best known for his restaurant Lutèce, where he was the chef (and for 22 years, also the owner) from 1961 - 1994. (For more about his life, please see William Grimes' excellent New York Times obituary.)This conversation took place in Chef Soltner's apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan on December 5, 2016, just five weeks after the death of his wife Simone. It covers his first interest in the culinary arts, his feelings about nouvelle cuisine, the brutality of old-school kitchens, his disposition toward the young American chefs who rose up during Lutèce's heyday, the pain of a negative review, and whether or not the legend of his only taking five nights off in the restaurant's lifespan was true. (He also does a quick but memorable impression of Julia Child.) Chef Soltner's kindness, generosity, and good humor shine through in this conversation. We hope it offers those who never had the opportunity to know him a sense of his personality, and those who did know him a welcome remembrance.Huge thanks to Andrew Talks to Chefs' presenting sponsor, meez, the recipe operating software for culinary professionals. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2020 conversation with Lucinda Williams. ABOUT LUCINDA WILLIAMSOne of the most revered songwriters on the face of the earth, Lucinda Williams was once crowned “America's Best Songwriter” by People magazine. She first gained widespread attention after Mary Chapin Carpenter made her song “Passionate Kisses” a Top 5 hit, which earned Lucinda a Grammy award for Country Song of the Year. She went on to release a string of critically-acclaimed albums that garnered her a total of 15 Grammy nominations spanning the genres of rock, pop, country, folk, and Americana. One of the primary architects of the Americana genre, Lucinda has received more Americana Music Association award nominations than nearly any other artist, and she was the first female recipient of the AMA's Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. VH1 named her one of the 100 Greatest Women in Rock & Roll, while Rolling Stone named her among its 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. In addition to her own success as an artist with songs such as “I Just Wanted to See You So Bad,” “Right in Time,” “Essence,” “Righteously,” “Are You Alright,” “Come On,” and “Real Love,” the daughter of famed poet Miller Williams has also had her songs recorded by Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Patty Loveless, Bettye LaVette, and many others.

In this episode of Rock is Lit, Stephen Shaiken delves into the inspiration behind his rock novel, ‘Queensborough Rock', sharing how the music, culture, and grit of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s shaped the story. The bulk of the episode features a captivating reading from the novel, immersing listeners in a time when the music industry was as tough and unpredictable as the city itself. Stephen Shaiken was born and raised in New York City. He spent over three decades as a criminal defense lawyer in San Francisco. Before he became a lawyer, he earned an MA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University. These days he splits his time between Bangkok, Thailand and Tampa, Florida. Stephen writes short stories in several genres, some of which can be read on his blog, http://www.stephenshaiken.com/. He has written three novels that he describes as “exotic noir thrillers” in the NJA Series, featuring American expat lawyer Glenn Murray Cohen: ‘Bangkok Shadows', ‘Bangkok Whispers', and ‘Bangkok Blues', all available on Amazon as an E book or in paperback. A fourth book in the series is forthcoming. Stephen released ‘Queensborough Rock' in November 2022. Its genre is historical fiction, but the soul is rock ‘n' roll. The story is set in 1971. Young Jack Bernstein is a struggling rock ‘n' roll manager in New York City. Instead of a fancy office in Manhattan, a flashy car and backstage passes, he operates out of a basement apartment in working-class Queens, driving a cranky eight-year-old Volvo as he trolls third-string venues for hidden talent. Jack finances a demo tape for his top talent by borrowing from a loan shark and pawning a friend's guitar. When the tape fails to land a deal, Jack's last hope is an offer from a friendly Queens mobster. New York City in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s comes alive with all its intensity.
