https://www.stevetilston.com/representation | Different Strings Music Agencylorraine@differentstrings.co.uk Steve Tilston is one of our most celebrated song smiths, widely recognised within the world of folk and contemporary music; the words, arrangements and subtle, quite superb guitar playing could be no one else. And now to Steve Tilston's last album, Last Call officially released on Talking Elephant Records March 2025, over half a century on from his first and on a par with his finest. With the accompaniment of good friends and long-time musical collaborators, Steve looks both back and ahead as he travels the musical spectrum, across blues, traditional folk, poetry and even a hint of jazz. From social and political comment to rustic reflection, from autobiography to eternal geographical history; it's a thing of audible joy and circumstantial sadness.“The more you listen, the more there is to discover.” Bob HarrisThe story of Steve's “lost” letter from John Lennon thrust Steve into the worldwide media spotlight and was the inspiration for a Hollywood movie. Danny Collins, starring Al Pacino in the title role is now available to own on DVD. Sadly, Steve's songs didn't actually appear on the soundtrack, but the publicity surrounding the film, brought Steve and his music to much wider attention. You can still watch the clip of when Steve met Al on YouTube.Steve was also voted, Fatea Awards Male Vocalist of the Year 2015 and Truth to Tell was chosen as one of The Telegraph's top folk albums that year too.Born in Liverpool and raised in the Midlands, Steve made his recording debut in 1971 with the classic An Acoustic Confusion and has been turning out quality albums ever since. Life by Misadventure, And So It Goes, Solo Rubato and Such and Such all featuring first-class song-writing and stylistically Tilston, marking him out as one of this country's finest writers. Whilst the instrumental Swans at Coole is testament to his guitar virtuosity. Though known as a songwriter, Steve has always had an ear for the tradition and included new interpretations of old favourites on his original recordings. Of Many Hands is his first “all-traditional” album; with unique arrangements of timeless classics. There's also a “best of” anthology, The Greening Wind and a live album Live Hemistry recorded on tour with Fairport Convention. He joined an illustrious band of guitarists including Martin Simpson, Michael Messer and Wizz Jones, when he was invited to contribute to the Guitar Maestro series of DVDs; a combination of live studio performance and interviews, revealing the real passion behind these talented musicians… If anyone ever deserved the moniker “Guitar Maestro”, it's Steve Tilston! The writer of such classic songs as The Slipjigs and Reels and the award-winning The Reckoning, is also a published author. Steve's first novel All for Poor Jack is an historical tale set in Bristol and the New World, full of colourful characters. It's a mighty good read and has been enjoyed by the likes of Bob Dylan no less! He's toured with John Renbourn's Ship of Fools, traditional singer Maggie Boyle (the classic recordings Of Moor and Mesa and All Under the Sun), as guitarist with Ballet Rambert, with Maartin Allcock & Pete Zorn in WAZ! with Brooks Williams and with his daughter Martha. Plus collaborations with alt-country band The Durbervilles and old Bristol pals Keith Warmington and the late Stuart Gordon as the Steve Tilston Trio. His most recent project is Tilston & Lowe a duo with fellow songwriter Jez Lowe, producing The Janus Game a CD of brand-new co-writes.Others have also recorded Steve's songs. Here's to Tom Paine is the adopted theme song for the Tom Paine Society of America and we've lost count of the number of versions of The Slipjigs & Reels!

Send us a textInterview with Thomm Jutz, one of North America's finest songwriters, featuring a collaboration between this American singer-songwriter-producer and British folk singer, guitar player and producer Martin Simpson. Their collaboration centres upon a collection of English ballads gathered in the early 1900s by the great English folklorist Cecil Sharp and his assistant Maud Karpeles from Appalachian folk singers Mary Sands and Jane Gentry. Numerous of these ballads, like “Fair and Tender Ladies”, would eventually become absorbed in early North American folk music. (Note that Martin Simpson produced Newfoundland singer-songwriter Matthew Byrne's latest release “Stealing Time” (ref. Martin Simpson is a true icon of the global acoustic music scene. As a guitarist, he has done a huge amount to push the boundaries of the acoustic steel string instrument - showing it can be an expressive and lyrical voice. As a songwriter, he is a masterful storyteller whose poignant lyrics are shared with a disarmingly gentle, no-frills delivery that makes those of us who grew up in the North of England very glad to have done so, and everyone who didn't wish that they had. Throughout his career, Martin Simpson has been a vocal proponent of luthier-made guitars - from his early adoption of the work of Northumberland's Stefan Sobell and Cumbria's Fylde Guitars to his championing of the next generation of British lutherie with instruments by Taran Guitars in Scotland and Turnstone Guitars in England. It is no exaggeration to say that Martin Simpson's musicality and expectations from a guitar have informed the voice of the modern steel-string guitar, perhaps more than any other player. This is very cool indeed. During my visit to Martin's home, I had the good fortune to record him playing slide on his Taran guitar. You can watch that video here https://youtu.be/eFJK1zvmPc0, as well as exploring my own instrument by Casimi guitars https://youtu.be/45WnYusgR4w This episode of Life On The Fretboard is brought to you with the kind sponsorship of the author John Stubbings, whose new novel 'The Guitar Detective' is a beautiful companion piece to his debut ouvre 'The Devil Is In It.' Rob Luft is a rising star of the European jazz guitar scene whose intricate and lyrical playing melds textures from around the world into a striking musical voice. Rob is an extraordinarily creative person and a bit of a chameleon, home with everything from soulful standards and improvised fusion madness to Balkan time signatures and the joyful lines of Congolese soukous. He has even composed and performed pieces for electric guitar with a full orchestra, which is very cool and unusual, to borrow a phrase from Martin Simpson. We talk about Rob's formative years - growing up in the rich cultural mix of South East London and his early exposure to mind-blowing music by the greats of the jazz scene. The first live gig he ever saw pretty much sealed the deal...you'll find out why. We discuss the blank canvas that is the electric guitar and the use of effects in jazz - which leads to a poetic diatribe from Rob on the subject of loud footswitches and his love for ancient Boss pedals. Rob shares the challenges of playing in different contexts, from a perfectly timed 45-minute free jazz set to high-volume open-air festival gigs where all your fancy chord voicings disappear into the wind. We discuss the importance of playing the lyric of the song and living a life untainted by the seductive power of the pentatonic blues scale. Rob speaks eloquently on the subject of ear training and sight reading. It could save your life someday! I really enjoyed this conversation. Rob is thoughtful, quick and (thanks to years working at a radio station) has impeccable mic technique! I also captured Rob's impromptu performance of the Johnny Green classic "Body and Soul." I hope you enjoy it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDa3qpLPgkI You join us on a beautiful summer's day at my studio in the Sussex countryside. Anna May Wong was an international star who appeared in some of Hollywood's biggest movies in a career that spanned from the silent films of the 1920s, through the advent of talkies in the 30s, to television in the 1950s, despite all the obstacles in her path. A new biography, Not Your China Doll, examines how against all the odds Anna May Wong found international fame and became a trailblazer for Asian American actors. The English folk singer and guitar virtuoso Martin Simpson performs material from his new album - his 24th - Skydancers. The title track, commissioned by naturalist Chris Packham, highlights the plight of the Hen harrier. Simpson talks about his love of birds, of traditional song, of writing his own, the influence on him of American music, and a lifetime playing the guitar and banjo. Some leaders of classical music organisations say that the attitude to funding by the Arts Councils in England and Wales is undermining excellence, and putting inclusion before professionalism. We hear from a range of voices, including Sir Antonio Pappano, Chief Conductor at the London Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Royal Opera House; John Gilhooly, director of the Wigmore Hall and chair of the Royal Philharmonic Society; Kathryn McDowell, Managing Director of the London Symphony Orchestra and a former music director at Arts Council England; and Michael Eakin, Chief Executive of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and former Executive Director of the Arts Council Northwest. My guest this week is Ted Olson.Ted is Professor of Appalachian Studies at East Tennessee State University. He's also written liner notes and essays for some wonderful projects, including “Doc Watson – Life's Work: A Retrospective,” and the fantastic “Nothing But Green Willow: The Songs Of Jane Gentry and Mary Sands” by Martin Simpson & Thomm Jutz.Ted joins me to talk about three wonderful projects he worked on for Bear Family Records, celebrating three key recording sessions that took place in East Tennessee in the 1920s and '30s - The Bristol Sessions, The Johnson City Sessions and The Knoxville Sessions.Bear Family put out a multi-CD box set for each of these, which Ted did extensive research and provided some wonderful essays and liner notes for. Each set is also distilled into a single CD release. We talk about why The 1927 Bristol Sessions, which brought The Carter Family and Jimmie Rogers to the attention of the world, came to be known as the 'big bang' of Country music, why that label doesn't sit quite right with Ted, how the sessions came about, what was happening in the world of commercial recording at the time and why the legacy of those recordings is so important, plus much, much more.It was a fascinating conversation and put those recordings in a whole new context for me, both helping me understand their importance, but also (thanks in part to the wonderful transfers and re-mastering, as well as the incredible liner notes) helping me realise there's just some great music in there too! You'll find the single CDs here:Bear Family CDsBristol SessionsJohnson City SessionsKnoxville Sessionsand the box sets here:Bear Family box setsBristol SessionsJohnson City SessionsKnoxville SessionsHappy picking!Matt Support the show===- Sign up to get updates on new episodes - Free fiddle tune chord sheets- Here's a list of all the Bluegrass Jam Along interviews- Follow Bluegrass Jam Along for regular updates: Instagram Facebook - Review us on Apple Podcasts

My guests this week are Martin Simpson & Thomm Jutz, who join me to talk about their wonderful new record 'Nothing But Green Willow : The Songs of Mary Sands and Jane Gentry.' The album brings together a selection of British folk songs collected in Appalachia in the early 20th century by Cecil Sharp and Maud Karpeles. Alongside Martin and Thomm it features a range of incredible artists from both sides of the pond, including Sierra Hull and Justin Moses, Angeline Morrison, Odessa Settles, Tim O'Brien, Tammy Rogers, Seth Lakeman, Dale Ann Bradley and Tim Stafford. We talk about how the songs made their way to Appalachia, how (and why) Cecil and Maud travelled to the region to collect them and why this record is so important to both Martin and Thomm. It was a truly fascinating conversation and it's a superb record. I'd really urge you to check out the physical copies of this one as the packaging is amazing and features some really informative and fascinating liner notes. Grammy-nominated guitarist, producer, and songwriter Thomm Jutz discusses his upcoming project with award-winning English guitarist Martin Simpson. The album, Nothing But Green Willow: The Songs of Mary Sands and Jane Gentry, is comprised of ballads from English folklorist Cecil Sharp's 1916-1918 collection, English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians, particularly those tunes from singers Mary Sands and Jane Gentry. On this album, Simpson and Jutz brought together a mix of roots artists from both sides of the pond—Sierra Hull, Angeline Morrison, Odessa Settles, Tim O'Brien, Tammy Rogers, Seth Lakeman, and more—to create an homage to the bridge from Appalachia to England and back, just as the songs of Sands and Gentry originally did. The album is available September 29th on Topic Records. “My niche now in the professional world is tailoring tones to the player.” Kevin Muiderman combines musical passion with a dogged scientific approach that not only refines through prototype after prototype, but boldly eschews some of the conventional lore and wisdom about tonewoods. He's always worked closely with musicians, especially professional fingerstyle players, to refine guitars for their style, needs and unique demands. And you can trust he's been getting good feedback, considering the list of guitarists who play his guitars includes Leo Kottke, John Doyle, Martin Simpson, and plenty more! An accomplished fingerstylist himself, the music he plays, the players he builds for, and the community he nurtures through his house concert series are all a part of a cohesive picture. This year, as he continues to build for others, you'll find Kevin out playing his own music, on his own guitars. Roud 2 goes under so many titles, it might be easier just to stick with 'Roud 2' and be done with it. Whether you know it as 'When I was on Horseback' or 'The Unfortunate Rake', or any of the other titles you may find, it's a grizzly old song with a fascinating history. And who better to discuss it with than Debbie Armour of Burd Ellen, always a fun person to chat with, not to mention an absolute font of folk knowledge. Debbie discusses the fact that it appears to be more than one song, the golf course approach to traditional song, as well as the ways she went about interpreting it... and the ways in which her daughter responded. It's a funny conversation, in spite of the misery that the song brings. Dig in, why don't you?Over the course of the episode, Debbie Armour and Jon Wilks mention the following things:The English Folk Dance and Song Society'When I was on Horseback / The Unfortunate Rake' on the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library website'The Unfortunate Rake: A Study in the Evolution of a Ballad' album (Folkways FS 3805)St James Infirmary, San FranciscoIan Lynch, Fire Draw Near podcast'Lucy Wan', as discussed by Nick HartTrack listing‘When I was on Horseback', performed by Mary Doran'When I was on Horseback', performed by Steeleye Span'Katie Cruel', performed by Bert Jansch, Beth Orton & Devendra Banhart'St James Hospital', performed by Martin Simpson'The Girl who was Poorly Clad', performed by Bryony Griffith and Alice Jones'St James Infirmary Blues', performed by Louis Armstrong'Adieu Adieu', performed by The Watersons'The Chariot', performed by Burd Ellen'When I was on Horseback', performed by Susan McKeown'The Trooper Cut Down in his Prime', performed by Laura Smyth & Ted Kemp'When I was on Horseback', performed exclusively for the Old Songs Podcast by Debbie ArmourFor more info on Debbie Armour and Burd Ellen, including the new album, head to burdellen.bandcamp.com.

Folk songs are often known by many names, and this classic is no different! The Hills of Granemore / The Granemore Hare, with plenty of alternate spellings of Greenmore/Granemore/Greenmore... The point though, is that it's a great song - one of my favourites! In this podcast episode (which is a video-less version of what you can find on my YouTube channel) I talk about some of my favourite versions of this song - by Martin Simpson, Daori Farrell, Dick Gaughan - and explore: 'what makes this song work'? If you want someone who looks at songs a little more holistically than just 'it's great cos it uses these chords' - then my videos are for you!

The pods or 'chatpods' as I like to call them have been unbelievably enlightening and insightful. Planet Driven Brands Podcast Martin Simpson. Martin is a designer by trade but is so much more than that as an expert in the packaging process and brand strategy & activation. Here Martin takes through the moral maze that is our responsibility to be more sustainable and how that plays out in the world of brands. "We all have a duty of care" Martin describes it as an 'amble' but its a far reaching discussion, both technical (on inks) and thought provoking - is there a 'shopping list of righteousness'? Martin firmly believes in brands mission to be 'simple, honest and consistent' and uses this to portray how consumers expect brands to share the duty of care. We cover specific topics such as 'The Planet Moment Of Truth' in packaging and we also chat about Wicked Kitchen and the leadership shown by Derek and Chad Sarno within the world of vegan food. As Martin says: "Customers have changed a little bit and so has the marketplace. No-one expects to suffer through a veggie burger; you expect to love it, and it should be loved, it's a thing of beauty." Martin, like all our panellists, is passionate about how we tackle the big issues around brands' responsibilities to the planet and it's a fascinating picture he paints in his own inimitable style Here, in Planet Driven Brands Podcast Martin Simpson he shares his wisdom and experience with us. I think you'll love it and I certainly enjoyed the chat :) If you'd like to meet Martin digitally, here is the Marks website and this is his LinkedIn profile About The Podcast The planet driven brands podcast is a library of thought leadership on brands and their responsibility to the welfare of the planet. This is the first episode of a genre swapping series - I make a playlist for a friend, and they make one in return, based on music that we know little about! I am joined by my friend Felix, and he has given me some UK Drill to listen to, while I have given him some trad folk. Definitely an odd contrast. in this episode we talk about the artists: SL, FOLHIO, Digga D, Dave, Tion Wayne, June Tabor, Martin Simpson, Daoirí Farrell and Stan Rogers
