There was much celebration in Caithness a few weeks ago when it was announced that, after decades of planning and preparation, The Flow Country has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status. It's the first in Scotland to be granted this status on purely natural criteria and is also the only peatbog in the world with World Heritage status. At one time, scything would have been common practice in Scotland, for making hay or harvesting crops. But, with the advent of machinery, land managers were no longer reliant in this ancient bit of kit. But it would appear that this traditional practice is undergoing a bit of a revival, not least for conservation purposes where a low impact approach to the land is being encouraged. Last week, Crown Estate Scotland organised an event offering people the chance to have a go at a wildflower meadow in Tomintoul. Alarming news this week that five more seabirds have been added to the red list which puts them at greater risk of extinction. The state of the oceans is behind a lot of this, and this is being recognised by one group of very active young people in Ullapool who are doing their bit to improve the marine environment. They are the Ullapool Sea Savers. Back in October Mark visited the Huntly TOADS after school club as they were about to embark on a project to build a garden shelter out of traditional materials. Mark visited a session recently involving water, mud, straw and a paddling pool. This week's callout is about the World Stovies Championships at the annual Huntly Hairst Festival. We hear an extract from the Scotland Outdoors podcast as Helen Needham discusses the republishing of pioneering climber Dorothy Pilley's book ‘Climbing Days' with her great great nephew Dan Richards.Rachel has a mindful moment at the Falls of Clyde.

Open Seas is a Scottish charity that focusses on protecting our marine environment and the things that live in it. A few weeks ago, Mark joined them in Skye where they were carrying out seabed surveys. We hear an excerpt.More than 130 years ago two men began a years' long adventure to discover, climb and map Skye's famous Black Cuillin. Professor Norman Collie was a scientist and John Mackenzie was a local mountain guide. The unlikely pair are considered among the greatest pioneering mountaineers of their time and in 2020 after several years of fundraising, a statue was erected in their memory. Does the murder of Alexei Navalny signal the end or a new beginning of anti Putin activism in Russia? Is it also a wake up call for those of us in the West who have taken our eyes off the developments in Russia, Ukraine, and the destabilization of the region?Despite the row over accusations of antisemitic statements by prospective Parliamentary candidates the Labour Party romped to two outstanding victories in the Kingswood and Wellingborough by-elections. We examine Rishi Sunak's response to these losses and ask if he might call a snap election. If he is still Tory leader.Meanwhile Scottish Labour held its annual conference with a significant focus on Anas Sarwar as leader. Sarwar was quite willing to state his willingness to stand up to Starmer. Will this show of independence stretch to his two Scottish MPs following the Scottish Labour conference position and voting with the SNP on its motion calling for an immediate Gaza ceasefire? In response to Scottish Labour's plans for a windfall tax on oil profits, more than 800 oil ,engineering, and business executives have raised concerns that this could lead to massive job losses in the North East. The SNP is even more committed to phasing out of oil and gas production in an independent Scotland. We ask where stands the Just Transition and the development of local industry and training? All this plus the origins and consequences of the Right to Buy policy and the thorny question of Ullapool and its train station. If you want to see Lesley's Denmark movie check out this linkhttps://lesleyriddoch.com/events ★ Support this podcast ★

We visited the Corrishalloch gorge near Ullapool in episode 5 and stopped overnight at Dundonnell in a quaint B&B. This final route takes us from Dundonnell along another wonderfully scenic route through Poolewe, Gairloch, Sheildaig, Applecross, Achnasheen and Beauly to mention just a few of the beauty spots we pass through. We also travel down the Bealach na Ba, a treacherous winding mountain road with hairpin bends and steep descents. The views, however, are amazing and this experience follows us all the way. There are amazing stories on our journey from 2nd World War collection points for the Russian convoys to amazing tropical planted gardens in a most inhospitable part of the world in winter. There's scenery, fabulous beaches, towering mountains and deep lochs. There is so much to cover and we will just scratch the surface sufficiently for you, perhaps, to come and see it for yourself. Let me, John Harbour, transport you on a wonderful journey and, hopefully, you will be able to experience it yourself one day. If you cannot come to Scotland, for whatever reason, then sit back, relax and let your imagination wander on this, the final leg, of the North Coast 500.

Communities in the Scottish Highlands are facing a housing crisis so bad, it's been described as a clearance for the 21st century. According to the Convenor of the Highland Council, Bill Lobban, “the species most under threat in the Cairngorms National Park isn't the Capercaillie but the young family trying to find a home”. Ironically one key cause of the problem is also what brings most into the local economy – tourism. Across the region the growth of the tourism and hospitality industry is driving the demand for 2nd homes and many houses are now used for short-term holiday lets, with the result that very little accommodation remains for locals searching for somewhere to live, what does remain is usually unaffordable or unsuitable. The knock-on effect is that businesses across the Highlands are struggling to find staff and even when they manage to find them, they often lose them because there's no rental accommodation locally. A sector which has been particularly hard hit is hospitality where low wages exacerbate the issue with the result that hotels and restaurants find themselves in the unenviable position of having plenty of customers but not enough staff to serve them. Often, the only way many businesses can secure staff is if they provide accommodation but that's not always suitable for long term employees and skilled staff who might have young families plus not all businesses can afford to buy or manage housing for their staff. It's not just the hospitality sector either which is suffering, the salmon farming industry is being hit hard too and its not just low paid workers, all professions are being priced out of the housing market by too many people chasing too few properties. In Rental Health: All Work No Homes Pennie Stuart heads first to the northwest Highland village of Ullapool to hear how the business community is responding to the unintended consequences of the tourism boom while further south in Aviemore, in the heart of the Cairngorms national park, she hears about the radical solutions being proposed to bring staff, homes and tourism back into some kind of balance. Introduction This episode was prompted by show 3542 from Beeza entitled The Worst Car I Ever Had. Here's my story. I moved to Edinburgh in 1981, and before long bought myself a car - the first one I had owned. Before that I'd owned a series of Lambretta motor scooters and small to medium powered motorbikes. I'd been using a bicycle a lot after that. The car I bought was an oldish Peugeot 104, small, not very powerful, but it did the job. It was fine for driving around town and I used it to go and visit my parents in Norwich, England a few times, a long journey. I once drove north, up to Ullapool, a shorter drive, but it wasn't the car for long journeys. Mostly it was used around town. As the Peugeot started to give me trouble I looked around for a replacement. I was visiting my parents and went to a car dealer in Norwich and was shown an Austin Maestro. It was newer than the Peugeot and seemed to be in good condition, so I bought it, trading in the Peugeot as I did so. The Maestro range was seen as reasonably good as far as I knew, but this one suffered from some design flaws, in my opinion. The car I bought was only a few years old and had a fairly low mileage. It was the HLE model with a 1.3 litre petrol engine. It had 4 doors and a hatch at the back giving access to a reasonable amount of luggage space (often such hatchbacks are called 5-door cars in the UK). All Maestro models had front-wheel drive, and this one had a manual gearbox. Automatic British cars were not common at that time. The Maestro had a bunch of economy features: a 4-speed gearbox with some economy gear ratios an econometer on the dashboard with green and red LEDs indicating how economically the car was being driven The Issues The Maestro seemed to have been designed to be driven as empty as possible. As soon as there were any passengers, or luggage, or both, the car was a nightmare to drive. There were models in the range that performed well, I think. Being passed by them on motorways and when trying to drive up any kind of hill showed this to be true. I've read that the standard 1.3 model was pretty good without the economy features, but I never experienced one. The problem was that the gap in gear ratios between the second and third gear was enormous, as if you'd accidentally skipped a gear. The fourth economy gear could only be resorted to on flat roads – or going downhill – or with a tail wind – or with the car completely empty. I was happy to find a link describing these problems when doing research for this show. The description of the car made me laugh, but also brought back memories of the extreme frustration I experienced with this car! So, I conclude that this particular Maestro was a failure. It might be the reason I got it at a good price; the previous owner was probably keen to get rid of it. Also the car dealer knew a sucker when he saw one, and I was that fool! I kept the car for a few years, did very few long journeys in it and eventually replaced it with a Vauxhall Astra Mark III, which was in a totally different league! Scotland's North Coast 500 was opened in 2015 and this 516 mile route has become a very popular travel destination. This, Part 5, of our tour will take us from Durness in North West Sutherland down through an extraordinary Geopark where geologists from all over the world come to visit. We will drive on to Laxford bridge and onto a ‘destitution' road. We'll cross the incredible Kylesku bridge before heading to the Assynt and Coigach are. We will pass through the town of Scourie and hear about General Mackay and his part in the Jacobite uprising. At Kylesku bridge you will hear of the wonderful memorial to the midget submariners who trained in this area during the war. We will drive around the northern part of the Assynt and Coigach area taking in the amazing mountains of Quinag, Suilven and Canisp. The ‘Cnoc and Lochan' landscape (mountain and small lochs) is breath-taking. From there we will visit the 16th Century Ardrek castle and Calda House that was mysteriously burned down 10 years after its construction. We will drive on to Ullapool, the gateway to the Outer Hebrides before dropping down to see two superb 19th century tropical gardens and then visit the Corrishalloch Gorge which is an outstanding natural 1 mile gorge with crashing waterfalls. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 25th August. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. 2022 LUCID AIR DREAM EDITION R EXCLUSIVE FIRST DRIVE - “The 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition R is a 933-hp electric luxury sedan that can drive more than 500 miles on a single charge. I witnessed and experienced the latter firsthand. The former? Not so much, but you'll need to keep reading. There's also an Air Dream Edition P (P stands for Performance, R means Range) that makes 1,111 horsepower and offers a range of better than 450 miles. Now get this—they cost the same price. You choose: Do you want a sleek-looking EV with nearly 100 hp more than the Tesla Model S Plaid? Or do you want the car that makes more horsepower than any Lamborghini ever made, beats the Tesla Model S Long Range at its own game by more than 100 miles, and puts the very notion of range anxiety out to pasture?” - Jonny Lieberman- Author - My 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition R had the potential to go 475 miles, whereas Rawlinson's could have traveled 517 miles on a single charge. That's a gauntlet dropped at the feet of you know who. Also, remember range anxiety? As with the internal combustion engine, it's a thing of the past. Original Source : https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/2022-lucid-air-dream-edition-r-exclusive-first-drive-review LUCID AIR DREAM EDITION: 500-MILE RATING LIKELY FOR RANGE VERSION - In Dream Edition Performance form, the Lucid Air will be able to accelerate to 60 mph in less than 2.5 seconds and make 1,111 horsepower, while the Range version does it in 2.7 seconds and makes 933 hp. Total torque for both versions is more than 738 pound-feet, and both versions will reach 168 mph—although we should note that prototypes have gone much faster. - Performance versions ride on staggered-width, specially developed Pirelli P Zero 21-inch tires, while the 500+ mile Range version rides on a 19-inch version of the same tires - It's built on a 924-volt architecture, with a 113-kwh battery pack, and will be able to regain up to 20 miles per minute at 350-kw CCS DC fast chargers (utilizing peak charge rates of over 300 kw), with unlimited Electrify America charging included for three years. - It will be also be compatible with a bi-directional home charging station to enable car-to-grid functionality, and a 19.2-kw onboard charger can regain up to 80 miles per hour on 240V AC—at 80 amps, on a 100-amp circuit, with a special Connected Home Charging system to be installed by Qmerit. The trade fair, previously known internationally as the "Frankfurt Auto Show," is also coming to Munich for the first time. - We have newly included the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV, and it is now officially certain that the EQE will be shown. We have also added the VW ID.5 GTX and (on a speculative basis) the Polestar 3. · Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/bBx7O/ · Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/528864/munich-iaa-electric-car-debuts/ - Audi's highlight will probably be the Grand Sphere, as the brand has already officially confirmed. - The BMW i4 electric sedan is one of the confirmed exhibits at the IAA. One of the highlights of the four-door model based on the new 4 Series Gran Coupé is the astonishing range of up to 590 kilometers according to the WLTP standard. - The Dacia Spring Electric is described by Dacia as the cheapest electric car on the market, and with a base price of around 20,000 euros - Mercedes has confirmed that the new EQE will also be shown - The Swiss company Micro is represented at the IAA, and rumor has it that it is showing the production version of the Microlino 2.0 at the show. - VW has announced the ID.5 GTX for the Munich show, again only with the red and yellow camouflage film. · Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/528864/munich-iaa-electric-car-debuts/6068864/ Jolly good! It's safe to say that we're still in the early years of EV station building, so most of the new stations really are aimed at suburban sprawl, urban centers, or linking up the two coasts—often producing no-go zones for electric cars if their owners want to visit a national park. - Electrify America has worked with Yosemite Westgate and Buck Meadows Lodge to build an EV charging station in Buck Meadows, California, with the goal of giving those driving to Yosemite National Park a spot to charge their EVs. The Yosemite Westgate and Buck Meadows Lodge station is located just 12 miles from this popular national park, and is not that far from other EA stations in Bishop, Oakhurst, and Bridgeport. After offering subsidies to the tune of 100 billion yen ($911 million) in fiscal 2012 to build charging stations and spur electric-vehicle adoption, charging poles mushroomed. - Now, with EV penetration only at around 1%, the country has hundreds of aging charging poles that aren't being used while others (they have an average lifespan of about eight years) are being taken out of service altogether. They can be booked for as little as £5.90 per hour. - Murray McAdam, Enterprise business rental sales manager for Scotland. “Local residents, business travelers, and tourists alike can now quickly switch to a rental vehicle after taking a train, ferry, bus, or plane, making their onward journey much more straightforward, especially to places that can only be accessed by car. The solution, which the company says it will make available as an open-source license, includes hardware and software enhancements that create a “booster” function. - StoreDot claims this will allow the battery to analyze charging station performance in real-time and adjust the battery to accommodate higher currents if so provided by the charge column. This, of course, requires communication between a vehicle's battery and charging system, thus making the open-source license a must for the start-up. The North Coast 500 is often referred to as Scotland's equivalent to America's route 66! It's a 500 mile round trip from our northernmost city, Inverness and takes you to the far north of Scotland and through the Northern highlands. It was created in 2014 by the North Highland Initiative, a non-profit organization as a way of boosting economic growth across the region. The NC500 is not a single road or highway like Route 66 but instead is a series of existing roads that form a loop. It's become a major tourism success story in Scotland with tens of thousands of people having already driven the route. The Scenery includes rugged coastline, beaches, farmland, rivers, forests, lochs, and mountains. You'll also see local wildlife such as deer, squirrels, birds of prey, seabirds, and sea life such as dolphins, whales and seals. There are plenty of sheep and highland cows as well as things to see and do along the way like castles, heritage sites, museums, spectacular beaches, whisky distilleries, breweries and much more. Spend at least 5 days on the route to give yourself time to enjoy the scenery and attractions along the way but you can do it in a few days. The best time is in the summer months when attractions are open and roads are unlikely to be closed You can go in either direction, but if you are new to driving in Scotland then I recommend going anticlockwise and heading up to John O Groats first as the roads in this direction are easier to navigate and it means you are keeping some of the best scenery and worst driving conditions till last. The route will go past some spectacular coastal scenery, At John O Groats you can take photos next to the famous signpost with signs showing distances to various destinations or take a detour over to the Orkney Isles. Heading round the coast will bring you to Thurso, our Northernmost town where there's a great whisky distillery called Wolfburn, pretty good whisky. You come into areas deserted during the Highland clearances when tenants were forced off their land, many Scottish crofters emigrated to Canada and the United States. Make a stop in Durness to see the Smoo caves and indulge in some chocolate at Cocoa Mountain. It's pretty windy round here but you'll be hard pushed to find fresher air. You'll be spoilt for choice scenery wise and finally you'll reach the town of Ullapool, gateway to the Outer Hebrides and a wonderful wee town with some great seafood restaurants. From Ullapool down to Applecross is where the driving gets a bit trickier with single track roads and some sharp bends, blind summits and the rest. There are plenty of opportunities to get off the beaten track, instagrammable photo opportunities at every turn and the views will truly take your breath away. So now for some driving etiquette, the roads in this part of Scotland can be quite narrow and winding so keep your speed down as you never know what will be around the corner! There may be sheep or cows or even deer on the roads, a tractor or a cyclist. Some parts of the NC 500 will be single track roads which means only 1 car can pass at a time the side of the road you will find passing places, usually marked by a black and white sign where you can pull over to let the car coming in the opposite direction pass by. The custom is that if you see a car approaching, you pull into the next passing place on your side of the road. If someone is coming uphill, you give them priority and passing places can also be used to let traffic overtake you especially if you are driving slowly to enjoy the scenery. If someone flashes their headlights at you, they are usually indicating that you can go first, and 1 final thing, it is customary to thank the other drivers for letting you pass by raising your hand Passing places are not parking places so don't stop there to take photos, this could quickly block the road and the locals will be far from impressed. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/adventuresinenglish/message

Julia and Christian Zielinski of ARTIS Guitar Duo were booked to play at the 20th Ullapool Guitar Festival in October 2019. They played a fantastic concert on the Friday night. And what a venue! The festival is held in the Macphail Centre in Ullapool and the theatre is quite intimate. Not to mention the fact that the audience is made up of guitar nerds who know how to keep quiet and listen. The atmosphere was wonderful! I recorded a conversation with Julia and Christian on the Saturday afternoon and it was really lovely to hear some of their story to complement the music I'd heard the night before. The skiff - a four-person, coxed rowing boat - was traditionally a common sight in the seas off Scotland's coastal communities. Changes in the populations of these towns and villages, many losing their traditional links with the sea altogether, has meant, though, that the racing of skiffs was becoming less common - until, that is, the advent of the self-build kit skiff. Named the St. Ayles skiff (in honour of the Scottish Fisheries Museum, where the idea was born and which is built on the site of St. Ayles Chapel in Anstruther), the huge popularity of the kit skiff has taken the coastal rowing world by surprise. Communities up and down the coastline have banded together to buy, build and then share their own skiff, with some villages buying more than one and women particularly well-represented in the sport. Helen Mark visits Ullapool for a trip out on Loch Broom in the Ulla with the village's over-forty women's crew, enjoying the calm before attending the opening of the inaugural St. Ayles Skiff World Championships. Crews from around the world, linked only by the fact that they have all bought and built their own St. Ayles skiff, have come together for a week's racing and a celebration of coastal rowing. All agree that the skiff has brought unexpected bonuses to their communities, uniting people in fundraising, in boatbuilding and then, finally, in getting out onto the water together.
