Pioneering Southern rock troubadours Little Feat have announced the May 9 release of their forthcoming studio LP, Strike Up The Band. As a preview of the set, the band has shared their initial single, "Too High To Cut My Hair," and the official music video, featuring the theatrics of Lily Winwood playing the role of stoned hairdresser to each member of the band that visits her."Too High To Cut My Hair," presents the ensemble's funk capability with the siphoned blues-fueled cadence of Sam Clayton's classic low C to create a roaring introduction to the band's latest project. The track was written by longtime member, Fred Tackett, who had a large part in crafting lines and lyrics across the album. "Fred Tackett shines all over this record, as he always does, but in particular in his writing," bandleader Bill Payne reaffirmed. Payne explains the backstory behind the single via press release: "'Too High To Cut My Hair' is based on a true story where [Tackett] and his wife Patricia were in a hotel room in New Orleans. Fred had asked for a trim, but decided that she was too high to cut his hair. And then he thought, 'oh my god, what a title!'"He continues, "People love the humor in our records, a cherished entree to those when they find it. So I'm happy this song displays that humor, and in full. It's also got the classic Sam Clayton doing his, three octaves below middle C voice in there - Too High To Cut My Hair! Everyone that has heard it has said, 'That's a Little Feat song,' and I know what they mean!"Little Feat sprinkles the collective wisdom of a 56-year-old band across the 13-track record, granting listeners access to their collective prowess and sonic dexterity on songs like "Bluegrass Pines (Ft. Molly Tuttle, Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams), ""4 Days Of Heaven, 3 Days Of Work," "Shipwrecks" and "Midnight Flight." "'Strike Up The Band' really began in the winter of 2019 when I was subbing for Paul Barrere, and he passed away on the day of that first show," says Scott Sharrard, "Continuing through the pandemic shut down (and a lot of practicing and songwriting during that time), to our return to the road in 2021. Then on to our recording field trip to Memphis that resulted in the Grammy Nominated blues album of classic blues covers 'Sam's Place.' That one gave us all the chance to tighten up as a band and re-visit the Rosetta Stone of rock and roll, the blues. We have paid a lot of dues to get here, and all roads have led us to this new album." "When discussing the album with the band and where it sits in our canon," Payne adds. "Our predecessor to this record in my mind was 'Let It Roll.' We are in a similar position to introduce Little Feat once again with this new collection of songs. It is my feeling that, from what we had been playing over the last few years, there's no question the overwhelming majority of fans would accept the album for what it is: an unmistakable iteration of Little Feat that highlights, with great songs and musicianship, the very best of an ongoing legacy, expressly evoking and expanding upon what people think of when they hear Little Feat."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

A Breath of Fresh Air
Tommy Emmanuel – Australia's Guitar Genius

A Breath of Fresh Air

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 30, 2025 52:00

When people talk about the greatest guitarists of all time, names like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page often come up. But in the world of acoustic fingerstyle guitar, few names resonate louder than Tommy Emmanuel. Hailing from Australia, Tommy has spent his life redefining what one person and one guitar can do — creating soundscapes so full and expressive, you'd swear there's a full band on stage. But it's just Tommy, his guitar, and a heart full of music.Born in 1955 in NSW, Tommy was destined for a life in music. By the age of four, he was already strumming along on a homemade guitar, inspired by the country music on the family radio. When he was just six, he and his older brother Phil were already performing professionally, touring rural Australia as part of the Emmanuel family band. After the sudden death of their father in 66, the Emmanuel family relocated and Tommy's passion for the guitar only deepened. He didn't receive formal training. Instead, he learned by ear, copying the sounds he heard and developing a unique style shaped by necessity, emotion, and endless hours of practice. If there's one name Tommy Emmanuel reveres more than any other, it's Chet Atkins. The legendary guitarist's fingerpicking style — where melody, bass, and rhythm are played simultaneously — blew Tommy's mind as a child. From the moment he heard Atkins' music, Tommy knew he wanted to master the same technique.Years later, not only did Tommy meet his hero, but the two became close friends and collaborators. In one of the greatest honors a guitarist can receive, Chet Atkins named Tommy a Certified Guitar Player (CGP) — a title he gave to only a handful of musicians worldwide. Their 1996 collaboration, The Day Finger Pickers Took Over the World, showcased both artists' brilliance and earned a GRAMMY nomination.Though he played in bands during the 1980s — it was Tommy's solo work that truly revealed his genius. Armed with a single acoustic guitar, Tommy became a one-man orchestra. He played melody, bass, harmony, and percussion all at once, creating dynamic performances that are equal parts musical and theatrical. From dazzling renditions of Classical Gas and Somewhere Over the Rainbow to heart-pounding originals, Tommy's concerts are unforgettable.Over the decades, Tommy has become not only a global guitar icon but also a tireless ambassador for fingerstyle playing. He's released over 30 albums, toured relentlessly across six continents, and collaborated with legends including Mark Knopfler, Jason Isbell, Jake Shimabukuro, Molly Tuttle, John Knowles, and many others.Tommy Emmanuel doesn't just perform — he teaches, encourages, and uplifts. Many students admire his technique, but it's his heart-led approach that sticks with them. Tommy's life hasn't been without challenges. Like many who spend their lives on the road, he struggled with addiction earlier in his career. But he's been open about those difficult years, crediting his recovery and ongoing sobriety to a mix of faith, family, and a renewed connection to the purpose behind his music. His story is one of resilience, not just in music but in life. He's spoken publicly about mindfulness, presence, and living with gratitude — all of which shine through in his playing. Now in his late 60s, Tommy Emmanuel shows no signs of slowing down. He continues to tour internationally, sell out shows, release new music, and connect with fans of all ages. Whether he's playing on a small club stage or headlining a major festival, Tommy pours everything into every note. There's a reason people call him a force of nature. When you imagine the tools of a guitar shredder, chances are you see a sharp-angled electric 6-string running into a smokin'-hot, fully saturated British halfstack of sorts—the type of thing that'll blow your hair back. You might not be picturing an acoustic steel-string or a banjo, and that's a mistake, because some of the most face-melting players to walk this earth work unplugged—like Molly Tuttle. The 31-year-old Californian has been performing live for roughly 20 years, following in a deep family tradition of roots-music players. Tuttle studied at Berklee College of Music, and has gone on to collaborate with some of the biggest names in bluegrass and folk, including Béla Fleck, Billy Strings, Buddy Miller, Sierra Hull, and Old Crow Medicine Show. Her 2023 record, City of Gold, won the Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album. The furious flatpicking solo on “San Joaquin,” off of that Grammy-winning record, is the subject of this unplugged episode of Shred With Shifty. Shiflett can shred on electric alright, but how does he hold up running leads on acoustic? It's a whole different ballgame. Thankfully, Tuttle is on hand, equipped with a Pre-War Guitars Co. 6-string, to demystify the techniques and gear that let her tear up the fretboard. Tune in to hear plenty of insider knowledge on how to amplify and EQ acoustics, what instruments can stand in for percussion in bluegrass groups, and how to improvise in bluegrass music. Steve Poltz is a… a.. what is he? In the man's own words, “I'm just a weirdo, a freak, a bon vivant, a rounder, a rabble rouser, a workaholic, a people pleaser, an idiot and a grateful kid who ran away and joined the circus.”Most of us know Poltz as one of the most charismatic live folksingers working today. Whether he's playing little club in Halifax, or trading verses with Jewel (whose hit song “You Were Made for Me” he co-wrote), or serenading Cayamo, Poltz is Poltz, full on and no exceptions. Hence the the superlative, announced each night, by the man himself:“This is the Greatest Show of My Life!”I shared a show with him once. Unsurprisingly, it was the same night I met Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. We became friends. Weird things happen when Poltz is around.Besides Jewel, the East Nashville-based folksinger has cuts with dozens of artists — Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Deer Tick, Sierra Hull, Nicki Bluhm among them — as well as a collaboration with the Wood Brothers on his critically-acclaimed record Stardust and Satellites. We talk about early years in the California folk rock scene. Hilarity ensues. Steve recounts what a typical show at the Belly Up was like during the Rugburns' heyday. Destroying stuff, making memories for everyone in the house except himself, since he was wasted. But we also explored more sensitive territory. Steve got clean more than fifteen years ago, after suffering a stroke onstage. We talk alot about that time, the before and after. I asked him how his motivations changed when he got clean. His answer is worth the listen alone. One thing about Steve Poltz is that he is better than just about anybody I know at making a person feel like he's the center of the world. Time and again in this interview a few minutes would pass before I'd realize he was interviewing me.Somewhere in there we played a song together, Steve's song Conveyor Belt. Steve played and sang and I did a harmony and even finagled a little solo into the deal. A sweet moment captured in the studio. This interview was the most fun I've had on the Morse Code Podcast so far. I hope you enjoy it. That's the moniker he created for his new record, Passage du Desir, which was released in July on High Top Mountain. Simpson promised that the album was the first step in a new phase of his creative life; the next was the subsequent tour. Simpson, looking his Waylon Jennings best, met up with Premier Guitar's John Bohlinger before his headlining gig at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. Sporting a new-to-him Gibson ES-335 and an army-camo jacket, he told Bohlinger he's not trying to be a star guitarist: “I'm trying to be a much less educated version of Bob Weir,” he grins. The star turn is for the Estonian guitarist Laur Joamets, who handles plenty of leads along with pedal steel. The guitar duo took us through their Blue Skies-era gear, featuring an array of Magnatone amplifiers, guitars old and new, and the simplest pedalboard you'll ever see on an arena stage.Shop Sturgill Simpson's Gear:Dunlop EP103 Echoplex - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/LX7gb0Fender Esquire - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/Y9XVBRFender Stratocaster - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/Py1vBYMagnatone Panoramic Stereo - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/y2jrVyMagnatone Varsity Reverb - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/yqRmvbMXR Booster - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/K0eZGyMXR Tap - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/7amJVdPeterson Stomp Classic - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/rQLdLjPeterson StroboStomp - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/rQLdLjSource Audio True Spring Reverb - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/mOg2vaT-Rex Replica - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/NkM3MqFull Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/sturgill-simpsonSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear: https://bit.ly/GiveawaysPG Don't Miss a Rundown: http://bit.ly/RIgRundownENLMerch & Magazines: https://shop.premierguitar.comPG's Facebook: https://facebook.com/premierguitarPG's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/premierguitar/PG's Twitter: https://twitter.com/premierguitarPG's Threads: https://threads.net/@premierguitarPG's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@premierguitar0:00 - Molly Tuttle & D'Addario0:15 - Sturgill Simpson Playing Intro0:55 - John Bohlinger Intro1:13 - Sturgill Simpson's 1962 Gibson ES-3354:13 - 1962 Gibson ES-335 Custom Wiring6:41 - Sturgill Simpson's 1956 Fender Esquire11:17 - Sturgill Simpson's Pedalboard13:09 - Sturgill Simpson's Magnatone Panoramic Stereo Combos16:09 - Rig Rundown & D'Addario16:34 - Laur Joamets' 1974 Fender Telecaster21:34 - Laur Joamets' Fano Guitars PX624:26 - Laur Joamets' Fender Stratocaster26:49 - Laur Joamets' Amps29:28 - Laur Joamets' Pedalboard34:39 - Laur Joamets' Pedal-Steel Guitar[Brought to you by D'Addario: https://ddar.io/wykyk-rr]© Copyright Gearhead Communications LLC, 2024#guitar #rigrundown #sturgillsimpson #guitarist #guitarplayer #telecaster #music

Banjo legend Tony Trischka joins me on the show this week. I first saw Tony playing with his band Psychograss back in the 90's at a bluegrass festival in Vancouver, and have been following Tony's music ever since. Tony is from Syracuse, and has spent most of his career in the New York area. His early bands included The Down City Ramblers, Country Cooking and Breakfast Special. He also started making really cool solo records in the early 70's that are pretty out-there in the context of what was going on in those days in bluegrass. Those albums definitely nod to traditional bluegrass, but they are also very progressive and experimental. He did alot of touring and recording with his various projects and collaborations over the years, while continuing to teach and compose (he taught a young upstart named Bela Fleck a thing or two in some lessons). After working to progress the banjo and its role in music through his entire career, Tony suddenly has dropped this amazing new project on us that is as traditional as it gets, and has allowed him to mine the depths of the greatness of Earl Scruggs. The new record is called Earl Jam, and was made after he was given hours and hours of tapes of Earl and John Hartford jamming. Unheard stuff that is like a portal into the brain of the greatest banjo innovator of all time. Tony transcribed a hours of that playing, and those transcriptions are what you hear, along with guests like Molly Tuttle and Billy Strings. Pedal steel guitarist Rich Hinman joins me on the show today. Rich is a really creative player who has definitely spent a great deal of time with the classic steel guitar cannon, but has very much branched out and developed his own style and voice on the instrument. He has a great flair for improvisation, and his tone and touch are really of the highest calibre. Rich is currently a teacher at Berklee College in Boston in the guitar Department, but continues his work in the studio and on the road. He has had recurring stints with artists like Sara Bareilles, Maren Morris, Molly Tuttle, KD Lang, Tanya Tucker, St. Vincent, Josh Ritter and many more. His current project is an amazing band with guitarist Adam Levy. The two of them go way back, and it shows, as their interplay and group improvisations are really incredible. The band is called Rich Hinman Vs Adam Levy and they have a brand new album out called “Fan Favorites” that you should check out. Rich also put out a solo album recently that is more on the ambient side, but full of inspired playing and compositions as well called “Memorial”. Rich is really active on social media which is how I first ran into his playing, and he also has a cool Patreon thing going on with weekly steel guitar lessons, so check out what he's up to over in his world at richhinman.com and if you get a chance to see him and Adam Levy, who are out on tour as we speak, don't miss them. Wyatt Ellis shares his backstory and music from his debut album Happy Valley. Born not far from the Great Smoky Mountains, Wyatt Ellis' first recollection of hearing the mandolin was Bobby Osborne's iconic solo on the Osborne Brothers' bluegrass classic “Rocky Top.” Hearing the Tennessee bluegrass anthem echo throughout the early years of his childhood is what led Wyatt to set his sights on learning to play mandolin. With his schedule packed with school, Boy Scouts and team sports, it was hard to find time for music. The COVID lockdown began just as he was forging those real-life musical friendships. Team sports, local lessons and bluegrass jams came to an abrupt end. At the same time, festivals and in-person recording sessions suddenly stopped, parking the most in-demand bluegrass musicians at home. Many of his favorite mandolin players started teaching or simply spending more time connecting within the community online. In the fall of 2020, Wyatt was chosen by his hero Sierra Hull, herself a former mandolin prodigy, for a Tennessee Folklife apprenticeship. Eager to improve under the watch of a true virtuoso, Wyatt describes those one-on-one tutorials as “working on exactly what I needed to work on at the time. Details. Timing. Tone."In October 2022, Wyatt performed alongside former Bluegrass Boy Peter Rowan and Grammy winner Molly Tuttle at Rowan's induction into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame. Wyatt was invited by his ultimate mandolin hero, Marty Stuart, to help kick off the Grand-Reopening of the Ellis Theater in Philadelphia, Mississippi. In February 2023, at 13 years old, he made his Grand Ole Opry debut appearance with bluegrass duo Dailey & Vincent. Moments after his debut appearance he was jamming backstage with acoustic icons Vince Gill and Mark O'Connor. In March 2023, Wyatt joined the genre's newest superstar, Billy Strings, to honor Doc Watson at his 100th birthday celebration. If you're looking for recommendations for desserts, might I suggest asking folk music and comedy savant Steve Poltz? This man loves gluten and carb-heavy deserts. He also loves collaborations, camaraderie, creativity and using humor in music. It all began for Poltz, or Poltzy as his friends call him, in his birthplace of Halifax Nova Scotia, making him an official Canadian. He spent his formative years in Palm Springs and Los Angeles where, due to his stutter, allergies and asthma, he learned to talk fast to get himself out of trouble. His sense of humor was cultivated in part by his funny parents as well as radio and television. He was particularly taken with The Smothers Brothers, Laugh-In and the novelty songs he heard on Dr. Demento's radio program, which solidified his own aspirations for being silly as hell in his own writing. Along the way, he picked up the guitar at six years old and it's been by his side ever since. After he moved to San Diego to attend college in the 80s, he formed the cow-punk band The Rugburns with Robert Driscoll. The band, who Steve has described as "really slow speed metal," developed a cult following across the US in the early 90s. It was at that time, Poltz met Jewel, who was a struggling musician in the San Diego scene. The two dated (they remain friends to this day) and ended up co-writing one of the biggest songs of the 90s with "You Were Meant for Me." After a brush with a major label (thanks to all the Jewel stuff), he remained an independent artist who developed a reputation for a singular live performance experience. In 2014, he actually had a stroke on-stage, which temporarily caused him to lose his vision, the ability to read and also gave him a new outlook on life. Also: post-stroke, he found a late-in-life obsession with The Grateful Dead. In 2016, he and his wife, Sharon, moved to Nashville, where he discovered that he actually does like the Nashville co-writing thing. He's written songs with people like Molly Tuttle and Billy Strings. His friend Oliver Wood (The Wood Brothers) produced his most recent record, Stardust and Satellites. My guest this week is Tony Trischka, who returns to Bluegrass Jam Along to chat about his superb new record Earl Jam.We talk about  Tony receiving a thumb drive containing 200 unheard recordings of Earl Scruggs jamming with John Hartford, and his amazement at not just how many tunes were on there that he'd never heard Earl play, but also hearing Earl play in different styles and tunings too.Tony started transcribing the breaks and that was the start of the project that became Earl Jam, which features performances from Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Sam Bush, Del McCoury and Sierra Ferrell, alongside many more incredible musicians. It's a wonderful record and, as always, it was a joy chatting to Tony. For more info on the album, to buy or stream Earl Jam and to check Tony's tour dates, visit tonytrischka.comHappy picking,Matt Support the Show.===- Sign up to get updates on new episodes - Free fiddle tune chord sheets- Here's a list of all the Bluegrass Jam Along interviews- Follow Bluegrass Jam Along for regular updates: Instagram Facebook - Review us on Apple Podcasts

Bluegrass banjo legend Tony Trischka joins us this week to discuss the making of his new album, 'Earl Jam.' He also gives us a mini-masterclass into the world of Earl Scruggs. The story behind 'Earl Jam' is truly remarkable: Upon receiving a USB drive full of never-before-released Earl Scruggs home recordings from the '80s and '90s, Trischka decided to transcribe his favorite moments and solos, note-for-note. His playing of these transcriptions became the foundation for the album, which also features guest spots by Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Brittany Haas, Stuart Duncan and others. It's like hearing a completely new Earl Scruggs record in 2024. Just as memorable as the album are some Trischka's stories about Scruggs and his influence. Somehow, King Curtis Ravi Shankar, Petticoat Junction, Steve Martin, and KFC all get mentioned...and a lot more!   https://www.tonytrischka.com/earl-jam A First Timer's Guide to the Fretboard Summit: https://www.fretboardjournal.com/columns/a-first-timers-guide-to-the-fretboard-summit/ Subscribe to the Fretboard Journal print edition and reserve your copy of Fretboard Journal 54:  https://shop.fretboardjournal.com/products/fretboard-journal-annual-subscription This week's show is sponsored by: StewMac: https://stewmac.sjv.io/R5jvRR (Affiliate link) Izotope: https://www.izotope.com (Use the code FRET10 to save 10%) Stringjoy Strings: https://stringjoy.com (Use the code FRETBOARD to save 10% off your first order) Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar: https://mmguitarbar.com Peghead Nation: https://www.pegheadnation.com (Get your first month free or $20 off any annual subscription with the promo code FRETBOARD at checkout).
