Hello friends! Nashville based, singer-songwriter Tim Easton is my guest for episode 1383! His new album, Find Your Way drops on May 17th and he is out on tour now through the summer. He'll be in Texas in early June with a show on 6/5 at The Saxon Pub in Austin. Go to timeaston.com for tour dates, music, merch, and more. We have a great conversation about making Find Your Way in Canada with long-time collaborator Stagger, busking in Europe in his youth, signing to Madonna's Maverick Records in the 90's, getting out of a life of drugs and alcohol, being a dad, songwriting, touring, Alaska, and much more. I had a great time getting to know Tim. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or anywhere you pod. Some folks are just a natural for this show. Nashville-based veteran singer/songwriter Tim Easton (https://www.timeaston.com/) certainly fits the bill. A renowned tunesmith, Easton has lived a quintessential troubadour life—busking in Europe and living in L.A., New York, and many places in between. Now calling Nashville home, Tim is back with a new album Find Your Way. Tim's solo work dates back to the late 90s, back when the major labels bet big that so-called alt.country or Americana would be the next thing. In this episode of For Songs Singles, Tim talks about how those big bets never paid off. We cover quite a bit here, but mostly we discuss the first single from the album, the ethereal title track Find Your Way. The song deals with a life-changing near-miss traffic incident, caused by Tim being a bit under the influence. Tim opens up about how the incident caused him to reevaluate his lifestyle. We also discuss his career and influences, and long-time listeners of this show will appreciate Tim's love of both the Clash and Johnny Cash, the Louvin Brothers and Elvis Costello. So sit back and enjoy as Tim Easton joins me for For Songs.

We kick off Season 7 this week with the very remarkable singer and songwriter Aaron Lee Tasjan. Aaron has released a string of compelling and original solo albums over the past decade. They are all unique and interesting, but the last 3 or 4 are real gems, both in the writing and the incredible production and delivery with Tasjan! Tasjan! Tasjan! being the latest release. Aaron has had an interesting path to where he's at now, starting out playing in bands and jazz band at high school, and toying with a career as a jazz guitarist. As he realized his real passion was for songwriting, he left his jazz studies behind and moved to New York. He joined or started various bands there like The Madison Square Gardeners (great band name), and Semi-Precious Weapons. He also had stints as a side-person to artists like Marc Cohn and even The New York Dolls! Eventually, Aaron relocated to Nashvile and started his solo career in earnest - he's managed to stay true to his own unique sound but has also evolved in really interesting ways with each new project. He's collaborated with folks like Sean Lennon, Jack White, Tim Easton and Lilly Hiatt and is currently in the middle of completing his next album, and we get into that process as well. You can keep track of all of his work plus his upcoming tour dates at: aaronleetasjan.comBe sure to listen to the accompanying Songs Playlist which contains some of the artist's work, plus many of the songs we discuss on the show:Playlist on Spotify / Playlist on Apple MusicIf you enjoyed this episode, please consider supporting the show with a donation or Patreon subscriptionThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.comYour fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at www.stevedawson.ca Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/mmasspodcast. Nashville-based songwriter Tim Easton presents ‘Sliver of Light', a song that lives in the category of powerlessness over the behaviour of others. Literally inspired by a personal event and the thin line that exists between life and death, this single is released via Oklahoma-based Black Mesa Records. A mainstay of American roots music for more than 20 years, Tim Easton creates songs for the Great American Songbook. With reverence for the past and an outlook toward the future, Easton is easily among the greatest songwriters of our time. Pulling from a wide range of influences, his compositions lead you on a journey that blurs the lines between folk, blues, Americana and workingman's rock & roll. Penned with hope, ‘Sliver of Light' finds him focusing on the present in the realisation of how quickly and abruptly things can end. An organic offering, this song showcases his abilities as a songwriter and performer, and the breadth of his inspiration. “I wrote the lyrics on a Dutch train during a European tour. I had just heard tough news from home. A friend who had fallen down was suddenly on life support. The words poured out fast and, when I arrived at my hotel, I immediately set the lyrics to music. Once back home in Nashville, the recording session was equally charged and completed in a few hours. Take one was the keeper track with me singing and playing guitar along with the band while a friend filmed us recording. Overdubs were added with some percussion, Wurlitzer keyboard and harmony vocals to complete a song that is two-thirds observation and experience and one-third baseball prayers,” says Tim Easton. Years before Americana music was recognised at the Grammy Awards with its own category, Tim Easton helped pioneer the genre's mix of classic inspiration and contemporary interpretation, writing songs shaped by forebearers such as Doc Watson, Bob Dylan, John Prine and John Hiatt, while moving forward with the modern world.

Traveling early and often, he learned the ways of the road and rails and spent 7 years as a bonafide troubadour, making his way around Europe, playing the streets and clubs, living in Paris, London, Madrid, Prague, Dublin, and wherever he laid his hat. It was this period of time when he developed his songwriting style - folk based storytelling and personal traveling tales, often peppered with bold confessions or "tell it as it is" reality. Rolling Stone Magazine praised him as "having a novelist's sense of humanity." Returning to his roots in North America, moving to New York City and then Los Angeles, he signed with New West Records and released five critically acclaimed solo albums starting with 2001's "The Truth About Us," which featured three fourths of WILCO as the backing band. Invitations to be a support act from mentors Lucinda Williams and John Hiatt arrived. Easton settled in the burgeoning art and music scene of Joshua Tree, California between worldwide tours. After becoming a Father and re-locating to Nashville, Easton recorded an album for THIRTY TIGERS ("NOT COOL" 2013), which accented the stripped down Memphis & Sun Studios sound of the Tennessee Three. His next album 2016's "AMERICAN FORK," was a grand departure from his previous efforts, featuring a fully flushed out backing band with elaborate songs arrangements. His most recent album, "Paco & The Melodic Polaroids," is a fully stripped down, solo-acoustic album celebrating 30 years of companionship with "Paco," his trusty Gibson J-45 acoustic guitar. The new project was recorded DIRECT TO LACQUER at The Earnest Tube Studio in Bristol, Virginia. Recently, Easton reached the milestone of having 100 Published original songs which he celebrated by releasing 100 solo performance videos on 100 consecutive days, all posted on his personal YouTube channel. Episode 185: Tim Easton is one of the most interesting guys in the Americana troubadour game. He grew up split between Akron, OH and Tokyo, Japan. He busked all over Europe for years as he formed his identity as a performer and songwriter. His albums on New West in the early 2000s are classics of folk rock, and he's also powerful as a solo artist, as you can hear on the one-take direct-to-analog tracks of Paco And The Melodic Polaroids. His newest, You Don't Really Know Me, takes us inside his story and his heart more directly than most of his prior work. This is a fun, wide-ranging talk from his new home in Madison, TN with plenty of music from the new album.

Cutting tool technology continues to advance, and manufacturers can take advantage of a wide range of new cutting tool products. In this episode, Alan Rooks, Editor in Chief of Manufacturing Engineering magazine, talks with Tim Easton, National Sales Manager for NTK Cutting Tools about the company’s role in the North American market; key new product developments; attributes of the NTK staff and how they work with customers; as well as forthcoming new products and new tool materials.
Tim Easton, American songwriter and fellow Buckeye, has learned the ways of the hardcore troubadour…making his way around Europe and America by busking in the streets and playing the clubs. Although Rolling Stone Magazine praised him as “having a novelist’s sense of humanity” I believe his education as a Poetry Major at Ohio State University is the not so secret ingredient to his lyrical life. When I saw he was on the roster for the 2019 edition of the Woody Guthrie Festival in Okemah, Oklahoma, I knew I had to try and have a sit down conversation with him. Although my familiarity with his work was on the fringe, I wanted to dig deeper. As soon as I hit the registration desk at the Okfuskee County Historical Society in Okemah, (incidentally the recording site for Tim’s latest CD “Exposition” )I asked the volunteer staff for help in contacting Tim. Within two hours I had a text. We met shortly thereafter in front of the Crystal Theater but where to record a conversation? There was no media room and no readily available space to sit down and chat. A Woodyfest volunteer AGAIN to the rescue…”I live at the rock house down at the corner of Woody Guthrie Boulevard and Broadway. The back door is open, the air conditioning is on; there’s nothing but two chairs and a table in there but you’re welcome to it.” Tim was game and so was I. We had the following conversation in a virtually empty house sitting in two velveteen rockers facing each other with my lavalier mic attached to my water bottle handle. As you’ll hear, Tim talks about growing up in Japan, opening for the Flatlanders and Townes Van Zandt, busking the streets of Europe, heading his own record company, traveling to Alaska to teach songwriting workshops so you can fish and an upcoming State Department sponsored trip to Russia. Woody Guthrie would have loved Tim Easton. Now THAT’s Americana!
Meet Tim Easton. I was awesome meeting him and having lunch with him today. He served in the Army as a Combat Engineer. Hear his story tomorrow morning during my show at 8:45am Thank you for your service!
Robert Crumb is an American cartoonist and musician. His work displays a nostalgia for American folk culture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and satire of contemporary American culture. His band Robert Crumb and the Cheap Suit Serenades released 3 albums on the Blue Goose record label, featuring pre-war acoustic blues, rags and old time classics. Crumb is a prolific artist and contributed to the publication, Zap Comix. Inspired by psychedelics and cartoons from the 1920s and 1930s, he introduced a wide variety of characters that became extremely popular, including cultural icons Fritz the Cat and Mr. Natural, and the images from his Keep on Truckin' strip. In this episode, we explore Crumb's time working for American Greetings in Cleveland, Ohio at the now iconic 78th Street Studios building. Special musical guest: Tim Easton.

Tim Easton is a natural. A symphony of syllables. A lodger. A working musican. A world-traveler.A whirled unraveller. A word gatherer. His latest album got 4 stars via American Songwriter. I give it all the stars in the sky. It's the kind they don't make a lot anymore. A man and a guitar. Just like Bob and Woody. And Tim.
Kim Richey launched her career later than most, after her old friend and college band mate Bill Lloyd (of Foster & Lloyd) urged her to move to Music City. And after one of the most powerful executives in the music business introduced himself after a show and our guileless heroine had no idea who he was. Kim's crafty and tuneful mingling of folk, country and jangle pop was well formed when she released her debut album in 1995. Since then she's explored collaborations with diverse producers but maintained a through line to her sound and vibe that's made fans all over the world. She's one of Nashville's finest and she joins Craig to talk about her career and her new album Edgeland. Also, songwriter Tim Easton describes the experience of recording direct to lacquer disc in Bristol, just like the Carter Family did in 1927.

Stepro appears on Walker's most recent release, "Stay Gold" (Dangerbird Records) and recently completed a six-week tour with Butch and the rest of the band. Stepro also performs with singer Mary McBride under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State as a Cultural Ambassador, presenting American music overseas. Although New York and Los Angeles are the twin capitals of the music industry, the center of the Western music universe shifts from time to time as one style or another catches the public’s fancy. Places like Chicago, Seattle, Austin, Minneapolis, Athens, Georgia and other towns have all had their turn as the hottest place to be if you wanted to be part of the newest scene. But nestled in the red dirt and pines along the Cumberland River, Nashville, Tennessee has always been the holy ghost of the music industry trinity – especially for songwriters and country music. Home to the Grand Ole Opry, The Ryman Auditorium, and countless recording studios, publishing houses and record labels, Nashville has truly earned the moniker, “Music City, U.S.A.,” and it has been especially hot in recent years. Along with the country music establishment, increasing numbers of non-country artists like Jack White, Kings of Leon, The Black Keys and scores of underground artists call Nashville home, and the hit ABC series, Nashville, has only added fuel to the fire. Nashville’s temperate climate and affordable livability add to the draw for artists tired of the rat race on the coasts. After getting a start in Ohio, living an international troubadour’s life and spending years in Joshua Tree, California, songwriter Tim Easton relocated to Nashville in recent years. Stylistically, it was a logical move; Easton has always had a bluesy twang to his top-notch songs and deft guitar playing. He already had a successful career going before he arrived, with at least nine records in his discography, when Nashville got into his blood and he released the 50s rock/Sun Studios-inspired Not Cool in 2013. His new hometown suits him well, and with results like this maybe more artists should consider a new home in the 615 area code.
