Do wishes come true? In many ways our wishes dictate the direction we travel in life. In this week's episode, McKay discusses the principle that dreams we grant to others and seek for ourselves have the power to change lives. It often takes a leader and first class noticer to make someone's wish come true in the first place. From Jason McElwain to Cary Elwes, McKay goes on to recount stories about wish makers, what they wish for, and how they turn wishes into reality. Above all else, McKay finds it important to note that we can realize our own wishes too, and that's just what this episode is all about: making the right wishes and letting them serve as a guide. Among the stories he shares today is that of Shawn Bradley, NBA veteran and now quadriplegic, who, after getting hit by a car and losing movement in his body from the neck down, could've easily wished that everything was different or at least that he stayed in bed that fateful day. Instead, he saw no value in wishing for a new life, and opted to become someone new; someone who embraces the circumstances he's given. Be sure to listen in to today's moving and inspirational episode to discover how you, too, can make others' dreams come true, and lead life as you wish. The Finer Details of This Episode: The Make-A-Wish Foundation J Mac's dream come true Making others' dreams come true Cary Elwes' casting in The Princess Bride Letting wishes be your guide Shawn Bradley's new purpose in life Quotes: “Wishes, the kind we grant for and give to others, and the kind we seek to be granted for ourselves, both have the power to change your life.” “And Jason had a wish. After becoming manager, Jason had a wish, and it was to sit on the sideline in a uniform as a real player for one game.” “At Boston, he ran a very impressive two hour and 57 minute marathon, proving to the world that he was indeed an elite athlete, and that wishes - the best wishes - do come true.” “It's one thing to use the word wish or to send someone a wish, but an entirely different thing to see a wish come about in someone's life by what you do. This takes a leader who is a first class noticer: someone who sees what other people are hoping for and then goes about helping to make that happen.” “Cary said from the first shot in which cantankerous Max appears poking his head through a wooden peep hole in the door, Billy Crystal began ad libbing for three days straight, 10 hours a day. He improvised, never saying the same thing or the same line twice.” “Life tends to steer the same way. And if we wish we were more educated, the pull of such wishes tends to keep us interested in looking for a way to get that degree or become more educated.” “Shawn realizes that there's no value in wishing things were different, but there's tremendous value in wishing you can become something new.” Links: https://www.mckaychristensen.org/ (McKay Christensen Homepage)
In episode three of the Sixers Multiverse Podcast – a summer engagement series of the Out of Site Podcast on the Liberty Ballers Network – it is a trip to a (kinda) distant past. The year is 1993. The Philadelphia 76ers are one year removed from the Charles Barkley trade to Phoenix, which left the team without a franchise player for the first time in a long time. The Sixers selected Shawn Bradley at No. 2. Adio is joined by Jas Kang to take a look back at what could have changed if they had gone a different route. Learn more about your ad choices. Lee Haney Eight time Mr. Olympia, Fitness Games and Katrina Julia with FIT Life Creation on the Buckhead Business Show Lee Haney Lee Haney Enterprises Lee Haney has more than 30 years of fitness and nutrition experience with eight consecutive World Bodybuilding Championships to his credit. Over the years, Lee has trained professional athletes and celebrities, serving as a consultant for some of the best nutritional supplement companies in the world and was appointed Chairman of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. BECOMING MR. OLYMPIA In 1991, I Became The First Eight Time Consecutive World Body Building Champion To Win The Covenant MR. OLYMPIA Crown. The Road Getting There Wasn't Easy. It Took Hard Work, Delayed Gratification, And Above All A Lot Of Prayer. Over the years I've had the opportunity to be involved as a consultant with some of the best nutritional supplement companies in the world. Those associations, along with 30+ years of on-the-job experience, have given me a wealth of knowledge – knowledge that can be used in helping you reach your fitness goals. Whether the goal is to lower body fat, add muscle mass, or wanting to tone – I've been there, done that! Why are nutritional supplements so important? Nutritional supplements assist in enhancing valuable nutrients that our bodies need. Nutrients that are lacking in today's “hurry up and grow it” society. With that being said, it gives me great pleasure to introduce the Lee Haney's Nutritional Supplement System, formulated with years of knowledge and know how. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Even at age 46, Lee Haney's Herculean physique mirrors his equally impressive credentials. As the unprecedented winner of eight consecutive Mr. Olympia titles, besting Arnold Schwarzenegger's seven-file record, Lee is an icon in the fitness industry. Lee was the 1st 8 time Mr. Olympia and the youngest to retire at the age of 31. Now retired from his historic body building career, Lee's focus has turned to educating others. Within the sports and fitness arena, Lee is revered among his peers for his comprehensive personal training techniques as well as his contributions to the integrity of exercise in general. Professional athletes and coaches look to Lee for goal-specific sports training and nutrition programs during the off-season and for injury rehabilitation. Evander Holyfield sought out Lee to run his training programs before fighting in two heavyweight title defenses. Lee also joined forces with Philadelphia 76er's Shawn Bradley in order to strengthen and build up the hoopster's post-injury. Lee worked with Gary Sheffield to improve his overall performance and transform him from a shortstop into a powerful right fielder. How does an athlete choose Lee Haney? “I read about him and it was a fantasy of mine to work out with Lee Haney” recalls Sheffield; one of Haney's many admirers. Lee's popularity and respected position within his field have provided him with a lengthy list of awards and recognition including Proclamations from three cities and distinguished acknowledgments from The President's Council on Physical Fitness, The United States Sports Academy and The International Federation of Body Building. To Lee, Success is more about fulfillment than trophies or titles, so in 1994, he and his wife purchased a forty acre farm near their home and created the Haney Harvest House, a non-profit retreat facility for children of all races, creeds, and nationalities. “I wanted to be able to give something back. I've been so fortunate to have a lot of good things come my way, and it all comes from values I learned from growing up. If we don't take time now to give some of that back to this generation then when will we?” Join Lee as he hosts the TOTALEE FIT Radio Show TOTALEE FIT Radio showcases individuals who were once unhealthy but have now committed to living the TOTALEE FIT Lifestyle. In 1995 it was common for pro and college players to work out, scrimmage, and play pickup games together during the NBA offseason. Philadelphia 76ers General Manager John Lucas was so impressed with local high school basketball phenom Kobe Bryant that he asked if Kobe wanted to work out with the Sixers. Several of the Sixers' players would be there, including power forward Sharone Wright and the team's 7-foot-6-inch center, Shawn Bradley. Kobe, of course, said yes. But when you hear about Kobe's workouts in the summer of 1995, you hear about Jerry Stackhouse. He had been a high school phenom himself just a few years earlier. The Sixers had taken Stackhouse with the third overall pick in the 1995 NBA draft. At North Carolina, he'd been a state player of the year, the Sports Illustrated National Player of the Year, and taken the Tar Heels to the Final Four. He was supposed to be the Sixers' savior. Stackhouse was playing in those summer scrimmages and pickup games and you would have thought he would dominate them--and Kobe. Except their battles on the court back then have taken on the aura of myth and legend ever since, in a way that has always put Stackhouse in Kobe's shadow. Tarlin and Mike are back again with a special bonus episode of Running It Back where we look for lessons learned from the Space Jam franchise coinciding with the recent release of LeBron's new film, Space Jam: A New Legacy. To start, we give respect and a little tunefulness in honor of the late great Biz Markie, RIP. Then we begin by digging back into the context around the first Space Jam movie which was fleshed out in The Last Dance documentary which we've covered on other shows. We bask in a little 90s nostalgia for MJ's charisma and a cast of NBA Legends at the time including Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, Larry Johnson, Mugsy Bogues, and Shawn Bradley. From there, we jump to the Summer of 2021 and the release of the new Space Jam vehicle featuring LeBron, Diana Taurasi, Clay Thompson among others. How does the new version stack up against the OG Space Jam? What are our thoughts on Don Cheadle's performance as Al G Rithm in the WB Serververse? What marketing advice do we have for Warner Brothers and who is Mike's pick to star in Space Jam 3? Listen in to find out! It also takes stabs at his daliance with baseball during said retirement. The film features the cast of cartoon holligans from the Looney Tunes, Michaele Jordan and NBA players Charles Barkley, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson and Muggsy Bogues (the Monsters). From “sexy bike lanes” to just what constitutes a “bicycle accident,” transportation is making headlines like never before. Aaron, Sarah and Doug are together again to consider the burning questions filling our airwaves and social media feeds right now. Will US DOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg force all Americans to ride cargo bikes filled with Dr. Seuss books and dump them in a compost pile, or is that just a Fox News fever dream? Is New York's congestion pricing plan, the first in the nation, finally about to get rolling? And is it really part of a de Blasio/Cuomo/Biden war on cars? What can Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo teach us all about the harms of highway widening? What should be done about e-bike batteries? Plus, is America down with VMT? This episode was sponsored in part by Cleverhood. To celebrate the arrival of spring, War on Cars listers can now receive 25% off of stylish, functional rain gear designed specifically for walking and biking. Enter coupon code WARONCARS at checkout. SHOW NOTES: Industry needs to clean up electric batteries, including the ones that power your e-bike. Shawn Bradley wasn't injured in a “bicycle accident.” He was injured when a driver hit him with a car. Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo explains everything wrong with expanding highways. The US DOT is using the Civil Rights Act to pause the widening of 1-45 near Houston. A US Congresswoman thinks Bill de Blasio, Andrew Cuomo and Joe Biden are waging a war on cars. Fox News freaks out over “sexy bike lanes.” It might be time to use Vehicle Miles Traveled to tax drivers instead of just the gas tax. Secretary Pete appears to walk back a VMT tax. Are College Athletes Getting a Raw Financial Deal? (0:33)Guest: Allen Sanderson, Senior Lecturer in Economics at the University of ChicagoAfter decades of insisting college athletes not be paid, the NCAA just changed its rules to allow players to cut their own celebrity endorsement deals. The move was probably inevitable, as University of Chicago sports economist Allen Sanderson explained to us a month ago. Why? Because California had just passed a law allowing athletes at its state-run universities to make sponsorship and endorsement deals. California basically forced the NCAA's hand –and has now cracked the door to a long-running argument about whether college athletes should be paid like the pros. (Originally aired October 2, 2019) One of the World's Tallest Men (20:34)Guest: John Kauwe, PhD, Professor and Department Chair of Biology at Brigham Young UniversityThe average basketball player in the NBA 6' 7”, which is almost a foot taller than the average man. And then there are the few NBA players who tower over their own teammates. At 7 feet 6 inches Shawn Bradley is tied for the third tallest player the NBA's ever had. And it turns out that he's always wondered why he's so tall. (Originally aired September 19, 2019) Future Smithsonian Museum Exhibit Will Feature Bob Ross Paintings (38:12)Guest: Eric Jentsch, the Entertainment and Sports Curator for the National Museum of American HistoryYou can paint along with Bob Ross on public television almost any day of the week. He was on the air for 31 seasons over nine years and in constant reruns ever since. Where did all those paintings of happy accidents and friendly trees and mountains go? It's next to impossible to buy one. But New York Times reporters found them –stacked in a warehouse in Virginia. A few months ago we spoke with Eric Jentsch about all of this. He's a curator for the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, which has acquired some original Bob Ross landscapes for its collection. (Originally aired September 16, 2019) Teenage Sleep Deprivation Leads to Bad Decisions (51:09)Guest: Wendy Troxel, Ph.D. Senior Behavioral and Social Scientist, RAND CorporationThe one good thing about switching off Daylight Savings Time, like most Americans did last weekend, is that it's a little lighter in the morning when kids head off to school. And lots of American teenagers are heading off to school very, very early –with start times even before 8 a.m.! Meanwhile, only one in ten American teens are getting a full 8 hours of sleep on a regular basis. That leads to higher risk for lots of physical and mental health problems –also, and parents hate to hear this –sleep-deprive kids are more likely to make risky decisions. (Originally aired July 15, 2019) Want to Be the Fastest of Fast-Talkers? Go to Auctioneer School. This is not a drill, people. We got it. As soon as we learned the LeBron James (yes, THE LeBron James) was teaming up with the greatest young director in Hollywood to make "Space Jam 2", the good folks at The Kicker Podcast reached out to see if we could get an advance copy. And you know something? They emailed it over in 30 seconds. So nice of them. So now, Rob and Dave read through the script, adding a few editorial notes along the way, but really, it's a pretty perfect first draft. Shawn Bradley is prominently involved, and Patrick Ewing is very minimally involved. But LeBron is up for the acting challenge of his life in this (VERRY R-RATED) update of a 1990s cinema classic.
