Kristin Hersh of THROWING MUSES joins Rain Phoenix on LaunchLeft for a raw, unfiltered conversation about artistic integrity and the music industry's dark underbelly. Kristin reflects on her journey in the music industry, discussing her experiences with major labels and her commitment to making music that feels true to her. She shares insights into her creative process, including her approach to songwriting and production. The conversation touches on themes of authenticity, the spiritual aspects of music, and the challenges of maintaining artistic vision in a commercial industry. Kristin Hersh then launches Wallace False, who offers his unique perspective on creating original music and art. The episode provides a fascinating look into two generations of musicians who prioritize creative expression over commercial success, offering listeners a glimpse into the world of independent and experimental music-making. IN THIS EPISODE: (00:00) Intro: Kristin Hersh joins LaunchLeft podcast (05:58) The music industry's focus on image over art (13:18) Spirituality and channeling in music creation (19:39) Exploring unconventional sounds and instruments (25:49) Leaving major labels to pursue artistic vision (32:28) Kristin on producing her own music and incorporating nature sounds (38:32) Streaming's impact on musical exploration (48:50) Wallace False is launched (53:54) Creating original sounds from basic waveforms (59:18) Finding inspiration beyond audience expectations (60:00) Wallace False's new industrial soundscape album: Signal KEY TAKEAWAYS: Kristin has always prioritized authenticity in her music, choosing to leave major labels to maintain artistic integrity and her creative process. She believes that music is about capturing a visceral truth, not conforming to industry standards of prettiness or marketability. It's about nurturing the energetic essence of a song and letting it resonate with listeners who appreciate its rawness. Kristin strives for originality and control through her creative process. By manipulating raw sounds to craft unique compositions and avoiding conventional influences, she aims to create something entirely its own. It's important not to become complacent in any artistic lane, but to explore and experiment, allowing inspiration to guide the way. Music has a spiritual component that goes beyond just sound. It's about being a vessel for inspiration, channeling something greater than oneself. Kristin and Wyatt create music that resonates with truth, rejecting superficial standards and focusing on the deeper connection it can foster with those who truly listen. The Queen of Grunge's first band, Throwing Muses, began recording and playing out when they were just 14 years old and they're still going. 2020's critically acclaimed Sun Racket was hailed as a "perfect record." Hersh's refusal to participate in a corporate industry saw her leave a Warner Brothers recording contract at the top of her success in order to become listener-supported. "Music is humanist and so are we," as she puts it. Wildly prolific, she has released more than 20 albums - solo, with Throwing Muses, and her noise rock band 50 Foot Wave ("A group that runs laps around most rock bands" said Pitchfork, on 2022's Black Pearl). She's also a celebrated author: Rolling Stone named her first book, Rat Girl (Penguin) one of the ten best rock memoirs of all time. NPR said of her second book, Don't Suck, Don't Die, "Not only one of the best books of the year, but one of the most beautiful rock memoirs ever written." Her third book, the game-changing Seeing Sideways, pushes the envelope of creative non-fiction while telling the story of raising her 4 sons on a tour bus. Hersh lives in New Orleans and New England. WALLACE FALSE: Wyatt True, sometimes known as Wallace False, is a writer, animator, and musician. True was born in Rhode Island and raised just about everywhere else. He now resides in the Deep South. The common thread in True's work is a grotesque dismantling of any and all familiar structures. Guitars twang sour, sorrowful sonatas, protagonists are lost amongst melting walls and rooms that time forgot. He is mostly docile and will only bite if cornered. On today's episode, I talk to musician Krisitin Hersh. Originally from Atlanta, Kristin's family moved to Newport, RI when she was six. Here she met Tanya Donelly, and they formed Throwing Muses when they were teenagers. After moving to Boston years later, they quickly became part of the burgeoning scene that produced everyone from the Pixies to the Lemonheads, and the band similarly found success. Since 1986, they've released eleven albums on labels like 4AD, Rykodisc and Fire Records. In addition, Kristin has also recorded a dozen albums under her own name and as 50 Foot Wave, she has recorded two wonderful albums as well. And as always with guests who have had prolific careers, this is just the tip of the iceberg! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter. Kristin Hersh is a singular artist. For almost 40 years she's been writing and performing songs. She may have gotten her start as a kid in Throwing Muses, but her creative life has expanded to other bands, solo work, critically acclaimed books, and iconic collaborations.Even if you're not across Kristin's work, you're going to love the conversation you're about to hear. Send us a textThis week the Portland-based duo, Wonderly stopped by to discuss their latest album Wolves/ We also talked about the Low Bar Chorale, A new German Opera, and so much more.********Wolves is the culmination of a creative partnership that dates back to 2016. Brunberg and Landsverk debuted Wonderly with a self-titled 2017 collection; the unit continued with the post-pandemic release Story We Tell in 2022 and the covers collection Appropriate 'til Death in 2023. Their film scores have been featured on the soundtracks for the independent films Last Ferry, At the Video Store and other independent features, while their music has been heard as the aforementioned theme song of the New York Times' podcast The Daily and writer Cheryl Strayed's Dear Sugar, as well as on Brunberg's award-winning podcast Roam Schooled.Jim Brunberg was a touring song and dance man for 12 years with the hugely successful rock/harmony/acoustic duo (and sometimes quintet) Box Set, touring with acts ranging from Dave Matthews to Huey Lewis, through the 90s. In 2000, Jim opened a recording studio, turning to the recording and composing world to satisfy his constant hunger for music. He produced and engineered dozens of records for many artists (Storm Large, Kristin Hersh, John Wesley Harding, and countless Portland-based bands) and released a few solo albums before converting the studios into a world-class music venue (Mississippi Studios). This spawned a few larger venues (Revolution Hall and Polaris Hall) where Jim personally built the stages, much of the seating and decor of a family of venues he still co-owns with his business partner Kevin Cradock. Currently, Jim is writing and recording/producing a tragic/comic German Opera, working with some of the classical musicians he has met over the past several years (mostly Oregon Symphony players). The work, "Das Blut" is a satirical, full-fledged production, entirely in German, that takes aim at the rise of a tyrant. It is a nuanced, but completely insurgent take on empathy, power, where our demons come from, and what they eat for dinner. He plans to debut this work, along with a new batch of songs, in 2025.Ben Landsverk is an American composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist, based in Portland, OR, whose work focuses on social change through music. Hailed as a “prominent Portland composer” (Bloomberg Magazine) and “a unique musical talent” (Willamette Week), he is best known for his work as one half of the duo Wonderly, with musical partner Jim Brunberg. An active session musician, Landsverk has worked with such musical luminaries as Father John Misty, Pink Martini, Smokey Robinson, Van Dyke Parks, Storm Large, and Ruby Friedman Orchestra. From 2003-2015, he was a collaborator and music director with avant-garde performance artist Holcombe Waller and performed at such festivals as Under The Radar (NYC), Festival de Teatro de Curitiba (Brazil), Queer Zagreb (Croatia), Brooklyn Academy of Music (NYC), and Centre Pompidou (Metz and Paris, France). Landsverk is the founder and director of Portland's Low Bar Chorale and of Voices Unlimited, Portland's flagship choir for people with neurodiversity. He spent over 20 years as a professional choral director and singer, specializing in medieval, renaissance, and baroque music. Landsverk is currently working on his first solo album, scheduled for release in early 2025. *******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comFollow us on SocSupport the show

“Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. This week, I am so pleased to have Kristin Hersh on the podcast. She's a founding member of Throwing Muses and 50 Foot Wave. Anyone who even casually knows me knows how much I love Throwing Muses and her solo work. On today's episode, I talk to musician Tanya Donelly. Originally from Newport, Rhode Island, Tanya founded not just one, but three, incredible 20th century bands. As a teenager in the 1980s, she formed Throwing Muses with her step-sister Kristin Hersh and performed with them through 1991. During this same time, she founded The Breeders with Kim Deal and co-wrote the first album Pod. Tanya left both groups though to form Belly, where she was the principal songwriter and frontperson. Their first album Star was a huge hit, although the group then broke up after their second album, which started Tanya's solo career. Since then, she's released numerous albums and EPs on 4AD, performed again with Throwing Muses & Belly, and contributed to more albums than I can possibly list here in a short bio! Some artists prefer to "let the art speak for themselves." It's a stance I respect, but hope to never encounter during an interview. Kristin Hersh, on the other hand, is an open book. The musician has faced adversity head on, and chronicled it great detail through memoir. It's a breath of fresh air -- particularly from an artists whose work stands on its own, several times over, as the founder of Throwing Muses, 50 Foot Wave and nearly a dozen solo albums. Her latest, Clear Pond Road, arrived in September. It's raw, adventurous and triumphantly her own. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Orange Unified School District is the latest in the state to require schools to notify parents if students come out as transgender. What's driving these policies? With 18,000 seats, the now 30-year-old Honda Center has been home to the Anaheim Ducks hockey team and hosted concerts by Gwen Stefani and others. Kristin Hersh has been a frontwoman for the bands Throwing Muses and 50 Foot Wave. Her solo work is an acoustic departure for the indie darling.
The life of a touring rock n' roll musician can be very exciting. Fortunately, we leave the exciting parts out in our conversation with the deeply hilarious Kristin Hersh, from the bands Throwing Muses and 50-Foot Wave and a prolific solo career. Kristin, who has a brand new album out on Friday called Clear Pond Blue, takes us through the rock star life but focusing on sedate topics like trying to check in to hotel rooms a little bit early and the methodical nature of venue sound checks. In September of 1986 Throwing Muses released their debut album. It was the first record by and American group to be released on the British 4AD Label (paving the way for The Pixies just a few years later). Kristin Hersh is an acclaimed and accomplished musician and songwriter through her solo work and as part of the bands Throwing Muses and 50 Foot Wave. When Kristin Hersh was young, her father, Dude (that's what everyone calls him), taught her some basic chords on the guitar. And that was fine but to Kristin, Dude was just showing her the red, blue, and green chords whereas she wanted to learn, like turquoise, burgundy, and magenta chords. Synesthesia has always been part of Kristin's approach to music, she sees sound as color. Another more alarming aspect of her music was that for many years she didn't really remember performing. She was mentally present between songs and all the rest of her day but when it came time to play the song, it was like someone else was doing it while Kristin just went... elsewhere. We talk about those phenomena as well as trauma, car accidents, babies, misdiagnosed bipolar disorder, and her journey of mental health discovery.Kristin's web site - https://www.kristinhersh.com/Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun. Songwriter, guitarist and singer, Kristin Hersh joins Rhett from her home in Rhode Island to talk about recording with 50FOOTWAVE, a musical collective she founded in 2004 under the theory that ‘music doesn't belong in the music industry'. Kristin shares stories from her days as a young artist in the Boston music scene, grappling with the pressures of the industry, and what it means to lose yourself in the work. The two discuss the difference between creating art for art's sake versus selling your art as a product, and being humbled by the complexity of humanity.Kristin Hersh's prolific career has seen her heralded queen of the alternative release. Songwriter, guitarist and singer, Kristin Hersh has released over 20 records solo, with Throwing Muses and 50FOOTWAVE. 50 Foot Wave - "Staring Into the Sun," a 2022 single on Fire Records. This week's Song of the Day were selected by KEXP DJ Kevin Cole, host of Drive Time, in honor of International Women's Month. Re-listen to our kick-off day of programming, and explore articles and live sessions from some of our favorite female artists here. Two years after the long-awaited 10th studio album from Throwing Muses, frontwoman Kristin Hersh is back with a new record from her heavier side project 50 Foot Wave. Titled Black Pearl, the record is out April 15th and follows the 2016 EP Bath White. Our Song of the Day is Black Pearl's lead single “Staring Into the Sun.” Joined by Throwing Muses member Bernard Georges on bass and drummer Rob Ahler, Hersh creates a massively lush and gloomy soundscape for their first new music in six years. Featuring throbbing, droney, distortion-filled riffs, “Staring Into the Sun” is 50 Foot Wave at their most metal. Kristin Hersh is doing a long run of solo shows starting this March at SXSW and then jumping over to the UK and Europe into early Summer. Check out a full list of dates here and watch Hersh's KEXP in-studio session from 2017 at the link below. Kristin Hersh needs to make music. Whether it's with her bands Throwing Muses and 50FOOTWAVE or in her solo albums, making music is a compulsion. But she only recently figured out that music was her way of managing trauma. Kristin tells Marc about a life changing car accident, her dissociative disorder, PTSD, “switching,” and how processing all of this helped her understand the music she'd been hearing in her head all her life. They also talk about her new book, Seeing Sideways, which deals with Kristin raising four children on a tour bus. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
