Texas Homegrown Music with Maylee Thomas

Jack Barksdale inspires me about the next generations of music made , and especially here in Texas. A 17 yr. old folk/Americana singer/songwriter Jack started performing original music at the age of nine and has already shared the stage with Wynonna Judd, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Junior Brown, John Fullbright, and Hayes . He's definitely an “old soul” that paints his way into your mind with his prolific lyrics. He's headlining the inaugural Renegade Revival Music Fest May 17th at the Georgetown Palace Theater. And proceeds benefit HAAM of Austin helping musicians with healthcare.   Listen this week to our interview and you too will be inspired by this young Troubadour.   Originally aired 05/04/2025 on 95.3 FM KHYI the Range in Dallas, TX.

Joey Frendo joins Emily to chat about his debut full-length, Bound For Heartache which drops April 21st on Horton Records. They also dive into song meanings/origins, players on the record, sequencing, and all that good stuff. Plus, they bond over living on Tulsa time as they're both residents of the bourgeoning music town.  Big thanks to The Housing Crisis for providing the backing music you hear during the intro and outro of the show. Their new album, Astral Apartments is available wherever you listen to music.  __________________________________________________________ Joey Frendo is a man on a mission: to tell stories that speak to the human experience with authenticity and passion. His grit will pull you in, and you'll stick around for a while once you've caught an earful of his lived-in blue-collar storytelling. After building his brand on the soulful hooks and detailed arrangements of 2021's Stone Mason's Son EP, Frendo returns in 2023 with his debut full-length offering Bound for Heartache.  Equal parts alt-country, Petty-esque jangly guitar anthems, and bonafide Red Dirt twang, Bound for Heartache marks a natural progression for Frendo as he settles into his craft, showing that his new home region has rubbed off on him for the better. He's not afraid to show his range here — from pedal steel and barroom piano-laden rompers “Fool Hearted Woman” and “Building on Quicksand” to the driving rhythms and pop hooks in “Get What You Get” to the forlorn balladry of “Wild Pilots” and “Nebraska Rain” — each track standing on its own while never once feeling misplaced or out of sequence.  “I think more than anything, this record speaks on the stories we tell ourselves,” Frendo notes of the album's overarching theme. “It captures pieces of that dialogue we constantly have with ourselves — how life is always unfolding, leaving you to shade in the details, and how those stories affect where we end up and how we interact with others along the way.”  “Old-Fashioned Country Singer” is perhaps a high watermark on the new album, with Frendo calling out: “I think Ol' Waylon said it best / when he asked If Hank really done it like this,” posing an existential question of how and why we do what we do in life. These introspective, character-driven narratives are a hallmark of Frendo's output, unpacking emotions and experiences which listeners from all walks of life can relate to.  With a heart rooted in his native Michigan and a mind that's steeped in Southern musical tradition, Frendo is a perfect representation of the ever-evolving greater Oklahoma music scene that brought us beloved fellow acts like John Moreland, Turnpike Troubadours, John Fullbright, and more. He relocated to Tulsa in 2020 during the pandemic, shortly after losing his mother — crediting in hindsight that the one-two punch of major life events inspired this batch of songs. Getting back into the studio to record them over a year later proved to be a cathartic experience.  “I honestly felt like I was writing the best songs of my career, and finally starting to really see what I wanted to be as a songwriter,” he recalls. “I was grateful to be making music with people again, full stop, but also to be doing so in a new city with new people who I was genuinely ecstatic to be working with.”  Fully embracing this self-discovery, Frendo has now firmly planted his roots in Tulsa and found his identity as an artist. He's a songwriter's songwriter, pouring his soul into each and every line, and Bound for Heartache is a triumphant showcase of that commitment. This is but the latest chapter in a story that's still being written; this is his life's craft, being methodically chipped away by an artist hard at work earning his keep.  “I try to be a student of it, to serve it as best I can,” he affirms of his passion for the trade. “It's the thing I know I was put here to do.”

We knew that Over The Rhine's Nowhere Else Festival was going to be something special. We've heard about the meals, the music, the songs being sung under a big tent in their wide Ohio backyard. And yes, we grew up seeing Over The Rhine play show after breathtaking show under a similar tent at the Cornerstone Festival in West Central Illinois. We knew it would be great. But we were still not prepared for just how wonderful two days of understated, organic, family-style music could be. A steady drizzle of rain couldn't come close to dampening the spirits on that rural farm, and on this episode of the podcast, we do our best to take you there.   One of the hallmarks of Nowhere Else is that Karin and Linford of Over The Rhine always assemble a treasure trove of talent to accompany them for their “musical family reunion.” This cast – often comprised of fellow Americana (and Americana-adjacent) artists they have met out on the road – play concerts, participate in writer rounds, and offer creative workshops and seminars. While some will usually be relatively familiar to fans of this kind of music – and at least one will have earned “legend” status – there will always be at least a few that are relative unknowns. Though she has been a regular at Nowhere Else in recent years, we were not familiar with soul / gospel / r&b artist and full-time “culture coach” Nikki Lerner until shortly before the festival. But after we attended her morning session, called “Finding Your Voice Through Improv,” we knew she needed to join us on the podcast. I'm sure you will find her just as brilliant, insightful, hilarious, and soulful as we have.   And Bruce has loaded up the Jukebox with records from ALL of the artists on this year's Nowhere Else lineup. In addition to Nikki, you'll hear tunes from Iris Dement, Carrie Newcomer, Hayes Carll, The Winetree, Courtney Marie Andrews, Carolina Story, John Fullbright; Wille Tea Taylor, Ben Sollee, Vance Gilbert, and of course, Over the Rhine.   If you would like to support the show, please consider joining our Patreon community or dropping us a one-time tip and check out our NEW MERCH!   For more info visit the SHOW NOTES page at TrueTunes.com/Lerner   For more info about the Nowhere Else Festival (or to order tickets for Sept '23) go to http://www.nowhereelsefestival.com/

Renowned Arkansas Americana and true folk singer-songwriter and film actor Joe Purdy recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park. Joe Purdy is joined in this performance by duos the Honey Dewdrops and also Smokey & the Mirror. Also, interviews with Joe. “From his home state of Arkansas to his home in Los Angeles, Joe Purdy has recorded a baker’s dozen worth of albums. His songs have turned up on numerous TV shows and film soundtracks. Most notably, however, in recent years the singer, songwriter and self-described “hillbilly” has come to see the world and his role in it somewhat differently, charting this direction on his latest album, "Who Will Be Next?” Here he firmly plants his feet deep in the tradition of folk artists such as Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs, applying his unique skills as writer and vocalist as a passionate observer and participant of our times.” - http://www.joepurdy.com Joe is joined onstage by two different husband and wife Americana and true folk duos The Honey Dewdrops and Smokey & the Mirror. “Based out of Baltimore, MD, the Honey Dewdrops continue a long line of husband and wife duos making beautiful music together.  Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish now reside in Baltimore, but have strong connecting roots to the music in their home state of Virginia.” https://www.thehoneydewdrops.com “Smokey & The Mirror is husband and wife duo Bryan and Bernice Hembree.  Based out of Fayetteville, Arkansas, the Smokey & The Mirror have toured nationally/internationally over the past decade.  The band has supported tours for Old Crow Medicine Show, The Wood Brothers, I’m With Her, Elephant Revival, John Fullbright, and many of their musical heroes.” - http://www.smokeyandthemirror.com In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers a 1978 archival recording of Ozark original Sam Younger and himself performing the song “Kicking Mule,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In his segment “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor, and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins investigates historic outlaws of the Ozarks. Many famous outlaws including Bonnie & Clyde and Pretty Boy Floyd have hidden out in the Ozarks. Brooks guides us through this cult of criminality, recounting details of the Ozark experiences of Bonnie & Clyde in part three of this series called “Public Enemy.”

In the episode, Mark Baratto sits down with Kyle Carter to talk about a whole lot of live music. We talk about his involvement in the Songwriters Sessions, Songwriters Festival, and his own creation, Mile 0 Fest. Kyle and his family were living, what most consider to be a "comfortable life," but something was missing. After falling in love with Key West, Kyle sold it all and took his love for music to his newly beloved island paradise. Living a "comfortable life" may sound good on paper, but in the end, going after your dreams is what LIFE is all about. More on Mile 0 Fest - (Jan 28 - Feb 1) Mile 0 Fest was founded in 2017, with its first year of production being 2018. It was created on the principle of producing a festival that checked all of the boxes:  Fantastic Line-Up – that has repeat and fan favorites back every year, but also brings in new faces, and fresh talent. The best in Red Dirt Americana Location, Location, Location – A destination that was enjoyable for everyone! Key West has everything, beaches, fishing, water-sports, history, shopping, dining, dancing, its the perfect vacation. Fan Bliss – A festival that puts the fans first. No overcrowding here, we are a boutique festival with an attendance cap.  Over a short period of time, our attendees have become family. With almost every state represented, music fans from all over the country come together once a year to celebrate the common thread that binds them. The Love of great music. Flexibility – You want to come as a VIP and have all of your lodgings, passes, and extras are taken care of with a one-stop-shop? You got it! We have an incredible concierge staff that can make that happen. You want to book everything yourself and just get a pass to the festival? We can do that too! (Check out the Packages and Passes page for more detailed information)  What is Mile 0 Fest? Mile 0 Fest is a 4 Day Red Dirt/Americana Music Festival in Paradise (aka Key West).  When is Mile 0 Fest? The third annual Mile 0 Fest will be January 28th-February 1st. We have our Duval Street Kick-Off Party on Tuesday, January 28th, 2020. It is open to the public and is a free show for everyone. So although the festival is a four-day festival, you want to come in the day before and enjoy the kick-off party.  Where is Mile 0 Fest? Mile 0 Fest is held in Key West, Florida. We utilize numerous stages all over the island with our biggest stage being the Truman Waterfront Park Amphitheater. Local venues like The Smokin’ Tuna, Irish Kevin’s, Durty Harry’s, Viva Saloon, The Southernmost Beach Resort & Cafe, The Southernmost House, Sunset Pier, Cowboy Bill’s, Key West Theater, The San Carlos Institute, Fury Cruises and many more are also utilized throughout the week to provide ample opportunity to check out Key West while enjoying your favorite Red Dirt/Americana Artists.  Who Plays Mile 0 Fest? Only the best in Red Dirt & Americana. Past year’s performers have included, Trampled By Turtles, Turnpike Troubadours, Stoney Larue, Shinyribs, Mike & The Moonpies, Jamie Lin Wilson, Jamie Wyatt, John Moreland, John Fullbright, American Aquarium, The Great Divide, Cody Canada & The Departed, Bonnie Bishop, Todd Snider, Paul Thorn, Pat Green, Jason Boland & The Stragglers, The Mavericks, Walt & Tina Wilkins, Jason Eady, Courtney Patton, William Clark Green and many more. 2020’s line-up is looking to be the biggest yet with Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Robert Earl Keen, Randy Rogers Band & Whiskey Myers taking the headlining spots. Tonight on City Of Giants with Michael Patton we have Cristen Burdell from The Mansion at Woodward Park. Tulsa Garden Center rents out the mansion and the park grounds and holds almost daily events ranging from monthly meetings for roses and iris, to classes on everything from cooking to photography. Cristen came on to promote the fundraising dinner on March 22nd called Garden Thyme with the Gardener Guy, Paul James Here is a link. Buy tickets now. Last year's event with Gt Bynum sold out quick. https://www.facebook.com/events/430650607366829/ We had odd conversations. I asked if the dozens of weddings and related sadness adversely hurt the gardens. When she mentioned they have added a wine refrigerator into the Bridal room, I suggested they add a pool table somewhere for the grooms. She raved about Linneaus Teaching garden and I was impressed that every plant has a name tag. I also loved her explanation of the rose beds being a academic research center. I was amazed at the variety of events. Here is their March newsletter...http://tulsagardencenter.com/…/March-2018-TGC-Newsletter.pdf. It was really interesting to hear how popular weddings and corporate events at this historic mansion in the middle of a park have recently become. Being dressed up in a fancy place that is not a church is just really in right now. It feels good using the radio show to help promote such a wonderful place. It is not just the Tulsa Garden Center, it the the center of gardening in the Tulsa area. The song list for tonight is also impressive. Look for songs from locals Alaska and Madi, John Fullbright, and David M. Teegarden Sr. and Van Winkle. You can listen tonight at 7 pm or this weekend each day at noon on www.radioIDL.com
