Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

This week on the show, the great Yuka Honda. She's a New York musician. In the 1990s, she emerged from the fertile New York music underground with Cibo Matto alongside groups like the Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth, and Luscious Jackson. She's collaborated with an extensive roster of musicians, including John Zorn,David Byrne, Yoko Ono, Sean Ono Lennon, and her husband, guitarist Nels Cline.  Earlier this year, we taped the conversation you're about to hear. Some of it ran as text in the Across the Horizon zine that was available at Big Ears Music Fest. What is Across the Horizon? Well, it's a collaborative series from Bob Holmes of Suss and Northern Spy Records gathering together like-minded artists drawn “from the wide landscape of instrumental music” (including Luke Schneider, Marisa Anderson, William Tyler and more) to curate a series of digital releases that will culminate in a double LP compilation of stellar sonic explorations on August 13th.  Under her Eucademix banner, Yuka has explored experimental electronics via two semi recent Farm Psychedelia EPs and her Across The Horizon contribution “A Long Slow Blink Before The Answer.”  In this conversation, we get into food, art, language, and much more. You can read a full transcript of this conversation at Aquarium Drunkard, where you'll find 20 years worth of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more. Hello friends! "Home Free" writer/producer, Lenny Barszap and GRAMMY® Award-winning musician-producer Adrian Quesada (Black Pumas) who did the score and soundtrack for the movie are my guests for episode 1456! The "Home Free" soundtrack is out TODAY wherever you stream or download music. You can also get the double-vinyl HERE on Nine Mile Records and features members of The Beastie Boys, The Pharcyde, Dinosaur Jr., Luscious Jackson and more. "Home Free" is based on the real-life experience of Onion Creek Productions founder and director/producer Aaron Brown and writer/producer Lenny Barszap of Entertaining Entertainment. In 1997, as sophomores at the University of Texas at Austin, Brown and Barszap invited an unhoused philosophy professor to crash on their porch – where they hosted several parties, many of which their friend and fellow UT Austin student at the time, Adrian Quesada, also attended. Twenty-five years later, this became the premise for the film “Home Free,” which explores profound themes of friendship, personal growth, and social impact through the lens of comedy (think Dazed & Confused meets Superbad). Go to beenthere.org to find out more about the movie and soundtrack. Great conversation. The Sugar Refinery was a vegetarian restaurant and music venue from the mid '90s to 2003 at 1115 Granville Street. It was known for fostering local music projects which were experimental, collaborative, and whimsical. It was the site of a 48 hour show by the band Beans, who played there dozens of times. Ms T's Cabaret was at 339 West Pender. The building began life as it started life in 1906 as the Myers Hall and later held the city's first purpose-built bowling alley, the Canadian Cycle and Motor Co, the Canadian Legion, the Boilermaker's Hall, and the Marine workers' Pender Auditorium.  During the 1960s the Auditorium was booked by music series, including the Afterthought, and was the site of an early Grateful Dead concert. The building was home to Vancouver's earliest drag bar, BJ's, open from 1970 to 1983, and later, the Vancouver Club Baths also opened in the basement area. After being sold, it took on a western theme as Saddle Tramps before converting to a lesbian bar, Ms. T's, which also had music shows. It was demolished after a fire in 2003. Other venues mentioned: The Royal, the Starfish Room, 1067 jazz club, Blim, The Blinding Light!, Richard's on Richards, Graceland, Luv-a-fair. YIMP fest is an annual show at Falaise park since 2021. Happy New Year!! Sherman and Ski are BACK from a small hiatus to bring you some fresh NINETIES era content - we are talking you into another listen of the legendary Luscious Jackson. Founded by Jill Cunniff, Gabby Glaser, Vivian Trimble and joined by ex-Beastie Boys original drummer Kate Schellenbach, this incredible foursome produced some of the most unique sounds of the early to mid 90's. Best known for their 1996 chart hit, the mega-catchy track "Naked Eye", it's hard to overstate how overlooked their catalog has wound up, as they were true alt-rock pioneers with a true blend of hip hop rhythms, speak singing, harmonies, synth flavors...just damn fine work, really. As usual, Ski discovered this record during his year in Bologna, and reminds us of their later catalogue which is a kids record, while Sherman stumps about the In Search of Manny EP and the debut record Natural Ingredients, and realizes that he may enjoy their…jazz influences? But let's just say the deep dive we go into is absolutely worth the plunge…as Luscious Jackson's entire oeuvre has been criminally overlooked. Thanks for jumping back on board with Sherman & Ski!

In the late 1970s, punk music was particularly popular amongst teenagers. In New York City, they filled clubs like CBGB, Max's Kansas City, Hurrah, and TR3. They also formed bands. Tim Sommer, journalist and former record executive, recently wrote about this era of New York City music history for the New York Times in the article "In the Late '70s, Teen Punks Ruled New York. These Are Their Stories." He joins us to discuss the piece alongside Kate Schellenbach, founding member of the Beastie Boys and drummer for Luscious Jackson who was a teenage punk in the 70s herself. Plus, we take your calls of your memories of the 70s New York punk scene.

2500 DelMonte Street: The Oral History of Tower Records

Tim Devin started working record retail in the Bay Area for Wherehouse Records. On new release dates, he would have to drive to the Tower Records Campbell store on his lunch hour to pick up New Releases as Wherehouse wouldn't receive theirs until 4 or 5 days later. Finally realizing he needed to be working for Tower, he applied at Tower Records Mountain View where he was hired by Assistant Manager Barbara Williamson. Tim transferred to the Washington DC store shortly after Mountain View Store Manager Kevin Ferreter moved to DC and enticed him with the promise “You'll get a store, Tim!”.From there Tim's Tower career was in and around New York City, running stores in Paramus NJ, the Village store at 4th & Broadway and the Lincoln Center store at 66th & Broadway. Tim finished his career as the Regional Director for Tower Records in the New York area. Tim discusses some of the best concerts he saw growing up, the weekly scrutiny by NYC based record labels on where records were positioned when he ran the Village Store, the time he told The Artist formerly Known as Prince “no!”, the night Russ Solomon showed up unannounced and drank beers in Tim's office with the band Luscious Jackson and Daniel Lanois and the in-store nobody showed up for, leaving the “artist” almost in tears. Tim also talks about Tower Washington DC's most famous alumni, Dave Grohl and how he was greeted at the Lincoln Center store when he arrived to man the cash register in support of the release of the Foo Fighters album “There Is Nothing Left to Lose”. Tim talks about his role as New York Retail Director and how Tower was chasing new opportunities & carving new sources of revenue, despite knowing that the end appeared imminent. He finishes by reminiscing about time spent with Tower Records founder Russ Solomon.

Kate comes to LA. We learn the drummers are driving the ship. Holistically in control of everything! Like Lol, Kate got her DL in California. NYC is okay when you're young but it's hard. Kate started to work in TV. Never thought she would end up in LA. You have to be open and willing to take risks. LA is a small town masquerading as a big city where you can wear big boots and coats even when you don't need too. Beach Goths! Kate and Lol discuss the Thomas guide and getting around LA in 20 mins. Kate knows about the knowledge! She did the artists way (like us) fell in love with someone in LA  and ended up working with Ellen DeGeneres after an LA lunch! Even despite her NYC  parking anxiety. Now she produces talk shows. Budgie asks Kate to critique us. We are walking the fine line and flowing - phew! Thanks for holding our hands, you cheeky thing! Drums are our communication. Budgie and Lol and female drummers we have known. Her alter ego "Kate Nails, from The Face" got to see Culture club at the Palladium for free! A lucky life. No movie put a stamp on the mid-90s quite like Amy Heckerling's Clueless. Loosely adapted from Jane Austen's "Emma", Clueless follows a year in the life of Beverly Hills teen Cher as she plays matchmaker to teacher and student alike (but not, like, at the same time). And the soundtrack is the rare album that actually helps tell the story. With tracks from 90s mainstays Luscious Jackson, Coolio, Cracker, Smoking Popes and more, the Clueless soundtrack is full of angst, social satire, and just some really solid tunes. Also in this episode, we encounter more 90s glam rock covers, Libby reminisces about the clothes that got away, and we fall backwards into a new name for ska! While the 90s were dominated by the touring festival as opposed to the current day destination festival, the first half and second half had decidedly different approaches. Lollapalooza took a variety of artists from across genres with the intention of exposing artists across differing fanbases, whereas the Warped Tour, Ozzfest, H.O.R.D.E. Tour, and Lilith Fair each narrowed their focus. In the case of Lilith Fair, the simplistic history is that it was a female-centric folk tour, headlined by the likes of Sarah McLachlan, the Indigo Girls, Suzanne Vega, and Sheryl Crow. In reality, over the course of three years, the festival provided a much broader spectrum of female artists, including Queen Latifah, Bonnie Raitt, Letters To Cleo, Liz Phair, Dance Hall Crashers, K's Choice, Luscious Jackson, Nenah Cherry, The Pretenders, Missy Elliott, The Cardigans, Susanna Hoffs, Juliana Hatfield, and many many more. Luscious Jackson's Jill Cunniff speaks with Kyle Meredith about the 25th anniversary of the band's debut, Natural Ingredients, and the 20th anniversary of 1999's Electric Honey. We hear about the New York scene of the early '90s, their love of groove-based music and sampling, as well as touring with Beastie Boys, The Breeders, and R.E.M. After that, Cunniff gives the backstory on why the followup to their '96 breakthrough Fever In Fever Out (which included "Naked Eye") ended up being their last for 15 years. She also updates us on what the band members have been up to and the prospects of another album in the future. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy

So we're breaking out the VCRs and dusting off the old vinyl for a sidecast series presenting short, sweet, and random collections of soundtrack gems.  Hosts Jon Lamoreaux of The Hustle Podcast, Joe Royland of Sit & Spin with Joe, and Eric Miller of Pods & Sods each bring two songs to share, hence the six-pack. Not a ton of research, not a ton of pontificating, just three friends sharing some of the greatest (albeit often obscure) soundtrack songs the world has ever known. In Volume Two, we're unpacking some classics by George Hamilton, The Oceans, some cat named Bret Reilly, Thomas Dolby, Luscious Jackson and Eddie Van Halen.

****This episode was recording in April 2015 and released late because of reasons****The guys get to dig into some science fiction for this episode as they head into the deepest and darkest recesses of space this time. Joining Stevil and Matty is Michael Lothian, the host of The League's podcast Mainly Mobile and fellow podcaster Bryce Logan, the host of Let's Watch That and The 4 Eyed Forecast with his co-host Andy Shirlaw. Together, the guys talk some news first as Stevil wonders if trailers are giving away too much plot details, case in point, the new Terminator trailer gives an absolute doozy of a spoiler. What's too much? These are our Staff Picks of the week! Most likely in his lengthy preparation for Mad Max: Fury Road, Matty got to watch a great post apocalyptic gem from director Neil Marshall, 2008's Doomsday. What more can you ask for in a violent action flick? Cannibals, crazy fight sequences and great character actors like Bob Hoskins and Malcolm McDowell chewing the scenery for a little bit. Fantastic. He waited on pins and needles for it and now the embargo is lifted as Stevil can finally talk about his favorite movie of 2015 so far, Ex Machina. The directorial debut of writer Alex Garland, this film is absolutely stunning, beautifully shot with great performances from the entire cast, hopefully this movie will be remembered this coming awards season. Not wanting to accidentally steal Matty's Staff Pick (and almost doing it anyways), Mike finally watched Seven, an iconic classic thriller he'd never seen before, but was ruined because of, well, the internet. Of course the "WHAT'S IN THE BOX!" scene has been made into memes quite a lot, but even so Mike enjoyed the movie spoiler be damn. Just another testament of how great his David Fincher film is. Bryce brought two picks for this episode, firstly the movie Stevil has been dying to see, the indie horror phenomenon It Follows. This film gives off that fantastic Elm Street era horror vibe just demands a cult status. This is definitely the most talked about little film of 2015 so far. For his second pick, Bryce brought a film that very familiar to our hosts, Escape From New York, which he watched for the first time and loved. The John Carpenter classic, led by a completely badass Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, featured on our John Carpenter episode "Obey Roddy Piper's Mullet!". For the main subject of criminal films, our panel explains why they made their choices: "I don't know why I picked Aliens. Alien would've made more sense seeing how it takes place entirely on a spaceship and our topic was deep space travel. Well, fuck off, I wanted to watch a bunch of badass space marines get their asses kicked by an inferior but aggressively superior enemy. Brilliantly directed by James Cameron and starring Sigourney Weaver as the baddest female this side of Mars, Aliens is one the greatest sequels, if not one of the best movies ever." - @mattydub604 "As I may have stated on this show before, my favorite sci-fi film is Sunshine. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland weave an intelligent story about a crew manning humanity's last attempt to avoid extinction and a fantastic international character piece as well. Even with the ending, which people try to counter argue with me on, I still love this film every time I watch it. Shit, I have that John Murphy score on my phone." - @thestevildead "The teaser for Titan A.E. was brilliant and simple, seen on the big screen at Famous Players SilverCity where I worked in 1999. I quit before it came out in 2000 and never saw it in theatres, but shortly after on VHS. It had a great story no one told me about yet. The universe was huge and filled with life as the characters travelled through space to find the last hope for humankind." - @micheallothian "I chose Europa Report for two reasons. One being its reviews hailing how realistically it portrays space exploration and travel. Two, because I didn't know it was a found footage film. Boy, was I surprised with both reasons when I watched it. A fantastic use of the found footage gimmick that has been plaguing cinema lately and a fantastic use of realism in such an unknown genre. You will be surprised with this film." - @brucelagoon What is your favourite deep space sci-fi film? Do you consider Moon deep enough to be considered? That's what she said. Do you or did you enjoy our picks? Listen to the episode and let us know what you think in the comments below and follow us on Twitter and Instagram!

**_Capcom Generation 2: The Chronicles of Arthur_** Developer: Capcom / Publisher: Capcom *Ghosts'n Goblins (Makaimura) *Ghouls'n Ghosts (Dai Makaimura) *Super Ghouls'n Ghosts (Cho Makaimura) ** _D_** Developer: WARP / Publisher: Acclaim A horror themed interactive movie and adventure game directed by Kenji Eno. The first entry in the D series staring "digital actress" Laura, and controled through (FMV) sequences. Game must be completed within two hours without a save or pause function. ** _Deep Fear_** Developer: SEGA AM7 & System Sacom (Mansion & Lunacy) / Publisher: SEGA A 1998 survival horror game and SEGA's answer to Capcom's Resident Evil. The last Saturn game released in Europe. Features include: real-time item use, aiming while moving, and oxygen management. Music was composed by Kenji Kawai (The Ring, Ghost in Shell, Ranma, Kamen Rider). Creatures and Characters designed by manga artist Yasushi Nirasawa (Kamen Rider). ** _Dracula X_** Developer: Konami / Publisher: Konami Saturn version contains exclusive features, including new playable character (Maria Renard), new items, new enemies, two new areas (Cursed Prison and Underground Garden) and a secret outfit for Richter Belmont. A third equippable hand is available to Alucard for equipping usable items such as healing items. Badly ported because the PlayStation does not have a true 2D sprite mode. Developers did not take advantage of Saturn's sprite capabilities, forcing it to render using the same method as PlayStation. Resulted in stretched graphics (PS1 runs 256x224 resolution, while Saturn does 352x240), longer loading times, and altered transparency effects due to lack of alpha transparencies for 3D polygons. ** _Enemy Zero_** Developer: WARP / Publisher: SEGA A 1996 survival horror adventure directed by Kenji Eno. The second game to star "digital actress" Laura, and voiced by Jill Cunniff of Luscious Jackson. ** _House of the Dead_** Developer (Ported): Tantalus / Publisher: SEGA Port suffered from rushed development. Framerate drops to 20fps. Extra game modes were added which include character selection and a boss battle mode. ** _Lunacy (Gekka Mugentan Torico)_** Developer: System Sacom / Publisher: SEGA An interactive movie with a simple interface and complex puzzles. The game is primarily a long series of interconnecting FMV sequences. ** _Mr. Bones_** Developer: Zono Incorporated & Angel Studios (RE2 on N64) / Publisher: SEGA A multi-genre game created for SEGA by Ed Annunziata. Very few levels share the same gameplay or perspective. Genres include action/platform, music/rhythm, puzzle & memorization. The game's soundtrack was composed and performed by famed guitarist Ronnie Montrose. ** _Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge_** Developer: Capcom / Publisher: Capcom Exclusive port to Saturn, while original Darkstalkers for PS had no confirmed release date, resulted in angry PS owners. The original Darkstalkers used 128MB for all characters, Vampire Hunter uses 256MB in total, resulting in an average of 500 extra patterns for all characters. ** _Resident Evil_** Developer: Capcom / Publisher: Capcom Saturn version added an unlockable Battle minigame where the player must traverse through a series of rooms from the main game and eliminate all enemies within them with the weapons selected by the player. Minigame features two exclusive enemies not in the main game: a zombie version of Wesker and a gold-colored Tyrant. The player's performance is graded at the end of the minigame. The Japanese version is the most gore-laden of all the platforms. Saturn version also features exclusive enemy monsters (re-skinned Hunters called Ticks and a second Tyrant prior to game's final battle) and exclusive outfits for Jill and Chris. Developer: Capcom / Publisher: Capcom Released in Japan only in 1998 and r
