#49: WARNING: There are events discussed in this episode that might be upsetting for some. It's Hanukkah, a time for Jewish people to come together with friends and family, light the menorah and exchange gifts. But this year feels a little more solemn. Hate crimes, and particularly antisemitic ones, are on the rise in LA County. The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles recently held its second annual Shine A Light event at Grand Park in Downtown LA. Mayor Karen Bass and other political officials joined jewish leaders to raise awareness of the rising rates of antisemitism and discuss how to fight against the hate. HTLA producer Megan Botel was there and interviewed one woman whose mother was killed during an attack on a synagogue in 2019. Guests: Hannah Jacqueline Kaye, daughter of Lori Gilbert Kaye, who was killed at Chabad of Poway in San Diego; Randy Grossman, Lori Gilbert Kaye's sister; Jeffrey Abrams, L.A. regional director of the ADL

Then, we're joined by the winner of our audience survey drawing for a guest spot on our closing segment, Shabbat Table Talk. Listener Jim Ramenofsky speaks with Manya Brachear Pashman about what the findings of the report mean to him, and reflecting on his close friend, Lori Gilbert Kaye, who was murdered in the attack on the Poway Chabad in 2019. ____ Episode Lineup: (0:40) Avi Mayer and Holly Huffnagle (22:45) Manya Brachear Pashman and Jim Ramenofsky ____ Show Notes: Read the results from the 2021 State of Antisemitism in America report: https://www.AJC.org/2021Report Share your encounters with antisemitism on social media with the hashtag #AntisemitismReport
On April 27, 2019, in the middle of Passover, a white supremacist burst through the doors of a Chabad synagogue in Poway, California and opened fire, killing congregant Lori Gilbert-Kaye and injuring three others. As we approach the second anniversary of the shooting, we speak to Mayor Steve Vaus, a Grammy-winning country music singer, who was serving his first term as Poway's mayor at the time. Then we're joined by AJC Paris Director Anne-Sophie Sebban-Bécache to talk about the case of Sarah Halimi, a 65-year old French woman who was murdered in 2017 because she was Jewish. France's highest court has ruled that her killer will not stand trial due to his “delirious state” from smoking marijuana. _____ Episode Lineup: (00:40) Mayor Steve Vaus (15:32) Anne-Sophie Sebban-Bécache (19:02) Manya Brachear Pashman (22:15) Seffi Kogen ____ Show Notes: Episode Transcript One Candle by Steve Vaus
This week, Zuhdi uses his experience and roles to reflect on the parts of our identity and our nature as Americans at risk in this conflict against COVID-19 as well as other conflicts for our health and security. How much should we be willing to sacrifice? What is the role of culture in determining our responses to crises and what is its impact on our future nature. Dr. Jasser takes some time to also reflect on the beginning of the Muslim holy month of fasting of Ramadan. He also reflects on the one-year anniversary of the anti-Semitic hate crime and shooting against the congregation of Chabad of Poway synagogue on April 27, 2019 which killed Lori Gilbert-Kaye and injured others. These are times of increasing political extremism. They are also times of corruption and rising inequality. Enormous, alarming trends are sweeping through culture, government, and the economy. In some sense this is new, but in other ways it’s a story as old as civilized society. So the question is not why or what or who or even how—it’s where. Where is the courage? Where are the people standing up to stop all this? Where are the heroes, big and small? The city council member who refuses to rubber stamp the pocket-lining policies of her fellow council members. The parent who turns in their own child for his alarming obsession with guns. The celebrity who uses their platform to speak truth, rather than pile onto whatever the mob has decided is right. To the Stoics, courage was the greatest of the virtues. Being brave enough to take a stand, to risk one’s own neck. To throw yourself in front of the car to save someone else. Or, as Mario Savio put it on the Berkeley campus in the 1960s during the Free Speech movement, “to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus…to make it stop.”Courage was also independence. Refusing to cow to the majority, and instead to hold oneself to a higher standard. That standard was justice, another essential virtue. That meant insisting on what was right. Attacking corruption, intolerance for unfairness. Protecting the downtrodden or the weak. Are there still heroes out there? Yes. We see it in Lori Gilbert-Kaye, who died protecting her rabbi from a gunman. We see it in James Melville, the ambassador who resigned on principle after Trump’s comments about NATO. We see it when people admit they were wrong. When academics challenge political correctness and orthodoxy. We see it when a classmate stands up to a bully. We see it when a fireman rushes into a building, or when a police officer runs towards the shooting. When the ordinary person says, “Hey, don’t say things like that. Don’t treat other people that way. It’s not right.”But we don’t see it enough. In part because we don’t do it enough ourselves.
The bullets were meant to kill Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein. Instead, they gave him new life. “I'm a new person,” the rabbi said, his hands mangled from injuries suffered April 27, when an anti-Semitic gunman attacked Chabad of Poway. One worshipper, Lori Gilbert-Kaye, was killed. Three others were wounded, including Goldstein. His right index finger was shot off and the bones in his left index finger were shattered. Those wounds are obvious, thanks to the blue bandages wrapped around his hands. Less evident, at least at first glance, are the changes that occurred inside. “I've been a rabbi 33 years,” Goldstein said. “I'm human, I've made mistakes. But I'm a different person now. I'm more patient, more understanding, more appreciative.” https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/lifestyle/people/story/2019-07-05/rabbi-goldstein-the-making-of-a-religious-superstar
Good people are always mystified by what drives a "regular" person to plan and execute the deliberate and premeditated cold-blooded murder of innocent people, let alone in a house of worship. What is going on in this person's twisted mind and dark heart as he attacks men, women and children of faith during their prayers and celebrations?! How can a human being stoop to such obscene hate and cruelty? Our hearts are shattered as they go out to the husband, daughter, family and community of Lori Gilbert-Kaye, who was cruelly murdered by a terrorist in a heinous attack on Jews gathered in prayer at Chabad-Lubavitch of Poway last Shabbat, the final day of Passover. But within the tragedy and grief -- and the demonstration of the ugliest within humans -- another story has emerged, one that is more powerful than the senseless crime perpetrated: The story of the best within humans. Lori Kaye gave her life to save her Rabbi and others in her shul. Rabbi Goldstein through his actions and words, exhibited the noble majesty and dignity of a soul’s capability: not focusing on himself, but on his calling and mission. Millions, if not billions of people are being gripped by the heart-wrenching, yet formidable words of Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, the Rabbi of the Poway community who survived the attack. In articles and interviews, from his hospital bed and at the funeral service, Rabbi Goldstein is relentlessly focusing neither on his pain and loss, nor on fear and anger, but on his determination to transform this tragedy into a force of goodness and kindness. Please join Rabbi Jacobson as he discusses this tragedy and the lessons it provides us about both the worst and best in human beings, and above all -- what we can do in face of such darkness, both short-term and long-term, in preventing such travesties from happening ever again.

Poway is still coming to terms with the shock and pain from the shooting at the Congregation Chabad of Poway. In this podcast I share my thoughts on the reactions of fellow Powegians and ideas to move forward positively. We discuss the community rallying in support and solidarity with the Chabad in various vigils in Poway where people came together to cry together, pray together and support one another. We discuss the leadership of Mayor Steve Vaus and the tone he struck with people in the community. We talk at length about Poway Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Marian Kim-Phelps and her upstanding efforts to drive out hate in the classroom and the community. We discuss the goodness of Lori Gilbert-Kaye. We talk about Rabbi Goldstein and his trip to Washington DC for the National Day of Prayer. I took time to talk with friends and neighbors both in person and in social media. The grief in the community was strong, but still people were offering quality ideas to bring people together to drive out hate. We talk about addressing reality (This IS Poway), showing love with others and educating people on a range of cultures, religions and traditions. I spoke at length about the topic of Identity Politics, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Declaration of Independence, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. I also discuss Free Speech, Hate Speech and difficult conversations. I invite my fellow community members to join me here for a podcast conversation. I would enjoy learning your thoughts and hope our neighbors can learn and grow as we work our way through these difficult issues.
