The election season is really hot, and we are hearing more and more irrationality from candidates, the media and party supporters. What ever happened to thinking for yourself? Irrationality in Politics It's an election year and the propaganda is thick. Candidates and their supporters put forward outrageous lies or completely irrational ideas in the hope of supporting their candidate or defeating others. The news media has been helpful in pointing out some of this, but in other ways complicit in spreading the disinformation. It's easy to get caught up in the flurry of irrationality, particularly if you are a partisan for the Democratic or Republican parties. Tribalism is so strong, that people completely throw reason out the window. It is more important to remain loyal to one's tribe than to dig for the truth. What ever happened to “Question Authority?” What ever happened to “Think for Yourself?” Instead, politicians, the media, and their supporters all are reading from a common set of talking points. Examples: Biden's mental state, Marie Kondo Trump's criminal past and demands for dictatorship. Mass deportation NIMBY vs Property Rights Housing prices are rising because corporations are buying all the homes or too many vacant homes. Social Security, Project 2025, blame GOP, denial about fiscal crisis. EV myths (can't drive long range, burn fossil fuels, etc.) Many people mistakenly believe these common political myths... or they throw them around as scare tactics to frighten or trick voters. In fact, none of these myths are true. Republicans are for small government, spending cuts. Republicans are for getting the govt out of your personal life. Republicans are for low taxes. Republicans are conservative. Bush tried to privatize Social Security Clinton reduced the national debt. Democrats are against corporate welfare. Democrats are for equality. Democrats are pro-choice. Democrats are fiscally responsible. Democrats are liberal. None of these are true. But many people still think they are. It's irrationality! It was never Independence Day to me. Always 4th of July. Watching fireworks on the street in front of Burlingame house as a kid. That great trip every year to the Red Devil fireworks stand. Fuzzy memories of seeing fireworks in Guerneville. 9 years old in Kearns Utah. Only allowed sparklers and caps. We used a hammer to blow up caps, often a whole role at a time. Learning about illegal fireworks at around 11 years old. Here stories about people blowing up toilets with M-80s. The Bicentennial quarters. About 12-13 years old we knew a guy who knew a guy and we would get some firecrackers and bottle rockets. Around 16 years old make the trip to China Town and buy fireworks. Do a deal in a back alley. Big fireworks show at La Jolla Cove freshman year at UCSD. Big fireworks show a much bigger thing here in San Diego than I remember in Burlingame. Fireworks from Kate Sessions Park with synchronized music Shooting bottle rockets from UCSD A-2 into B-16. Must have been left over from the summer. With the kids, always attending a softball or baseball tournament somewhere. Watching fireworks from our home in North Poway. Little by little they would not get high enough over the hill to see them. Driving to Flaming Gorge WY and seeing the fireworks store right when we passed the state line. Then having leftovers back in Poway. I took them to the hazardous materials dump site. I always wondered if the workers there actually kept them. Then as I became more politically aware and learned more about the true meaning of America's founding, I really started to focus on the Declaration of Independence as a radical, innovative, groundbreaking idea. That we all have rights that precede the govt. And the govt's role is to secure those rights. Donald Trump and the Libertarian Party The headlines in the media are about the rowdy libertarians booing Trump. But that's just the tip of the iceberg in what made this event so nuts. Libertarians were trying to negotiate with a con man. They were hoping that by supporting Trump, Trump would in turn support some of their causes. There can be no advancement of liberty when dealing with an authoritarian con man. It's like Chamberlain trying to appease Hitler. It's like negotiating with terrorists. Breaking Down Political Myths: Trump lowered taxes for the middle class! Trump raised tariffs. Trump raised income taxes by limiting SALT deductions. Trump wants to raise tariffs much, much more. Don't tell me Trump lowered your taxes. GOP says, “Prices have now risen by 20.1 percent since Biden took office.” Prices will rise even more when Trump radically increases tariffs. Heather Cox Richardson: Just a reminder that what has driven us into debt is not Social Security and Medicare, but rather the George W. Bush tax cuts and the Trump tax cuts, both of which disproportionately benefited the wealthy and corporations.Even with those tax cuts, revenue is up. The problem with debt is mostly a spending problem. With rare exception, they run deficits nearly every year, even before those tax cuts. Trump and Bush tax cuts impacted revenue about $200B/yr. each, yet the deficit is nearly $2T. Biden: Time for billionaires to pay their “fair share”!Never defined, never explained, just means more. Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey is Running for County Board of Supervisors Maybe you have seen Richard Bailey's social media and direct mail messages. He has a lot to say about “The San Diego Comeback”. Why is a mayor of little ol' Coronado commenting about issues beyond his city? Because he is running for office! Plus we discuss some proposed tax increases under consideration. Jim Desmond and SANDAG Congestion Freeway Tax They are already planning to charge a per-mile tax for road usage. It's not a bad idea, but it will be difficult to implement fairly. Now San Diego is considering a Congestion Tax for freeway usage to subsidize mass transit. What's going on here? This is a tax on the many to benefit the few. Mass transit ridership is in decline, so why are we subsidizing it? Paloma Aguirre, Imperial Beach, and the Problem of Tijuana Sewage Seems this sewage problem in the South Bay has going on for decades, yet they still can't fix it. Now the County Board of Supervisors has declared a state of emergency. San Diego congressional delegates are pushing President Biden to solve the problem. Meanwhile some beaches in Imperial Beach have been closed for a year and a half. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria: Corporate Welfare vs Road Repair Todd Gloria flip flopped. City officials and business leaders lobbied for San Diego to host a design event. Todd Gloria vowed to ensure it was privately funded. Now he is singing a different tune. It was great hearing some of the issues hashed out by both public speakers and elected officials. As a podcaster, it was special meeting some folks that listen or watch my show. Nice to make those human connections. Poway chooses to replace Barry Leonard with an Appointment/Election Hybrid Poway has a history of appointing people to council to fill out a person's term. I figured this was the route they would take in replacing resigning councilmember Barry Leonard. The public was overwhelmingly for an election. Steve Vaus proposed a hybrid model. They will appoint someone with a pledge they will not run in the November 2024 election. Money in Poway Politics California's new SB1439 bill requires that elected officials recuse themselves from voting on issues that involve a donor that gave over $250. But $250 is the campaign donation limit for Poway. Does that mean SB1439 is moot in Poway? Or do indirect funds to PACs and non-profits count too? Life Time Fitness Update at The Farm in Poway The Poway City Council says they cannot do anything since there is no formal proposal before them. That's true. But locals know the developer's plan is to put in a Life Time Fitness center that likely violates the voter's will with Measure P. Mayor Vaus says there is a lot of misinformation swirling in social media. Is JRP part of the problem? LOL Poway Bans Homeless Encampments San Diego implemented a rule that authorities can remove homeless encampments if there is a shelter bed nearby. Now Poway has enacted a similar rule. After all, the San Diego homeless could end up in Poway. Archie Moore, Any Body Can Youth Foundation What a great fundraiser hosted by the ABC Youth Foundation for troubled youth. I attended a very well run and safe youth boxing match at St. Augustine High School. Bravo to the athletes, families and organizers that made this event possible. San Diego Finally Repairing Roads in Rancho Bernardo, Westwood The Witch Creek Fire was in 2007 but the damage to the roads has still not been resolved. The reconstruction has been over for some time, but then authorities had trouble coming up with the $5M to fund this project in the Westwood community of Rancho Bernardo. Why is it so hard to get local government officials to focus on their primary tasks? Steve Garvey for CA Senate? Former Dodger and Padre, Steve Garvey, is flirting with the idea of running for US Senate as a Republican. After his career ended in 1987, he considered running for senate, but his flirting with extramarital affairs derailed his political future. These days that's no longer a disqualifier. How will this be policed? Corporations donate tens of thousands of dollars to politician's non-profit organizations (see Poway Mayor Steve Vaus and La Mesa Vice Mayor Colin Parent) allegedly to win political favors. Corporate dollars also flow into Political Action Committees to drive campaign ads. Interestingly, government employee unions are given a pass. They can donate as much as they want, and politicians can return the favor with a vote for a raise. How will Poway replace Barry Leonard? Poway has a history of filling vacancies on city council with an appointment. Poway folks see this as a violation of democracy. We will find out Poway's plan at their meeting on June 6. Here's what John Riley thinks: The City of Carlsbad is Banning Gay Pride Flag on City Buildings The LGBTQ community is upset that the Gay Pride Flag cannot be presented on city buildings in Carlsbad. But what is the role of local government? Does the American flag already protect gay rights in the first place? No doubt this flies in the face of the woke agenda, but I think we should support equal rights for all, not special rights for this group and that group. Carlsbad Bans Prayer at City Meetings Why do some cities have invocations to start a city meeting? Is this a violation of the separation of church and state? While we're at it, why do they pledge allegiance to the flag before a meeting? I like this move by Carlsbad. San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond and Homelessness The County of San Diego wants to buy more hotels to house the homeless. After all, it's free money from Sacramento! Is this the solution to homelessness or are they just sweeping them under the rug? There are still mental health and addiction issues that need to be addressed. Tax the Rich to Subsidize San Diego Housing The idea is to tax large businesses on their payroll for employees earning $150,000+ per year. The money would go into a fund to subsidize housing for others. Would this solve the housing problem or just make matters worse? Taxing payroll will just increase demand when there is already not enough supply. It's not a solution. San Diego Housing Prices Continue to Increase Despite higher interest rates, housing prices are still going up. It's because there are not enough houses for sale. Until they start building more, we will continue to have a housing crisis making it really tough for first time home buyers. Rancho Bernardo Sink Hole There's a huge hole on Escala Drive in Rancho Bernardo. Why is it so hard to get this fixed quickly? The City of San Diego is trying to get emergency approval and pass environmental regulations. It's going to take over 2 months to fix it if we're lucky. Santee Allows More Tattoo Parlors Microblading is a hot trend to enhance eyebrows. The technique is like tattoos, and this is causing Santee to deregulate the rules in their city. Will this attract a bad element? Or is this just people pursuing their happiness? Lemon Grove Allows More Cannabis Dispensaries It's still illegal in El Cajon, but Lemon Grove is opening their economy for more cannabis dispensaries. But Lemon Grove has a serious revenue problem for their city coffers. Is this a move to free up their economy or just generate more tax dollars for the city? Here's what John Riley thinks: Poway Resignation: Councilman Barry Leonard Steps Down In a surprise, Barry Leonard has decided to step down due to “changes in life”. Leonard had been rumored to be a future mayoral candidate. Interestingly, Leonard covers Poway's District 2, which is where The Farm – Life Time Fitness controversy is brewing. How should Leonard be replaced? Appointment or election? Widen Highway 56: Good for commuters, but bad for environment? City leaders finally broke down and agreed to widen a portion of Highway 56. They are upset that the area was not built with mass transit in mind. Will this solve the congestion or just encourage more car use, and thus more pollution? Nathan Fletcher Replacement Election Announced The San Diego County Board of Supervisors announced that Fletcher would not be replaced by an appointment. This will go to an election in August. Right wing activist Carl DeMaio still predicts that Fletcher will recant his resignation. Amy Reichert Running for Fletcher's Seat Can a moderate Republican win a district that is held by a progressive? Reichert will put this tot the test. Reichert wants to address San Diego's high cost of living, homelessness, and public safety. Amy Landers is an Escondido Super Hero The restrooms in Escondido's parks are disgusting. The city claims they don't have the funding to solve the problem. Now Amy Landers is doing deep cleans of these bathrooms on her own, and sharing the results on TikTok. Dane White's Budget Problem in Escondido Escondido is mired in deficits and their city services are suffering. They have tried multiple times to increase the sales tax rate, but the voters say no. Meanwhile, politicians are trying to protect renters and protect the homeless, but their policies end up making the housing crisis even worse. It's Wednesday, April 26, 2023. Here's what John Riley thinks: Poway Unified School District first amendment case before Supreme Court Poway School Board members Michelle O'Connor-Ratcliff and TJ Zane (no longer in office), blocked their constituents from speech on their social media pages. Christopher and Kimberly Garnier have been long time critics of the school districts policies and demanded that the school board hold corrupt superintendent John Collins accountable. Should public officials be able to thwart free speech on their social media accounts, even when they discuss policy issues? Coronado and Oceanside School Districts sue Facebook, Google, TikTok and Twitter Of course, social media is impacting children. It has an addictive quality and sadly some kids engage in cyber bullying. Is this the time to sue technology companies? Or is this a teaching opportunity on how to best integrate social media in your life? Focus on reason, rationality, and not living second handed. San Diego Renter Protections If a property owner fulfills the terms of the lease agreement, but then decides to have the tenant vacate the property, does that make them a bad person? San Diego officials want to force landlords to pay 2-3 months of rent if they evict a tenant for no-fault. Sometimes landlords want to upgrade the property, move back in, sell the property, or just move on from troublesome tenants. Landlords have property rights, right? Renters upset about Ratio Billing for Utilities. Pay your fair share! In older apartment buildings, there are no specific electric, gas, and water meters for each unit. So, property owners use a formula to share those costs amongst the tenants. Now tenants are upset that they are paying more than they should. Isn't this how socialism and collectivism always seem to work? Some pay more than their fair share. Others freeload off others. SDG&E Rates Based on Income are Nonsense In a recent letter to the editor, a Poway resident expressed his frustration with SDG&E's proposal to base electric rates on income. Is this another income redistribution scheme? San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria has had it with homelessness. Public officials are facing a moral dilemma. Do they push out the homeless from encampments since they are there illegally and don't have property rights? Or is doing so inhumane? Seems like Todd Gloria is ready to get more aggressive to push the homeless out. Should the government buy housing for the homeless? The San Diego Housing Commission is planning to buy 3 Extended Stay America motels at the price of $383,000 per unit to house the homeless. Promising idea? San Diego Electric Vehicles Surging Over 10,000 EVs were sold in San Diego County in the first quarter of 2023. California now has over 1.5 zero emission vehicles. It's clear what direction this is headed. Get on board or get left out. LA Times Opinion Article: Give up on EV? An LA Times editorialist is fed up with the challenges of charging their EV on road trips. But is it really that hard? If you have a home charging station, that should satisfy 90% of your needs. SDGE plans to create a flat rate based on your income level, but with a lower variable rate based on usage. The plan is to offer income relief for low-income people and save money for big energy users. Wait, what? I thought they wanted us to conserve. I think it's a scheme to generate more revenue in response to the vast number of customers that are signing up for solar energy. California Mass Transit – Fiscal Cliff! Is mass transit the right long-term answer for California? Ridership numbers are down and govt subsidies are drying up. How are they going to pay for this? Colorado River Water Rationing coming soon. If the states can't work out an agreement, then the federal government will step in and decide for them. There's not enough water coming down the Colorado River to satisfy a growing population. Conservation isn't the answer. Humans need to manufacture, recycle, capture, and store their drinking water. La Mesa Vice Mayor Colin Parent running for State Assembly More fall out from the Nathan Fletcher scandal. Politicians are shifting and capitalizing on opportunities. Now Colin Parent announces a run for State Assembly. Parent is an advocate for mass transit, affordable housing, and safe, walkable neighborhoods. County of San Diego provides “surplus property” for the Homeless If you really think about it, homelessness is the result of government policies that limit housing growth, prevent high rises, and prevent evictions. And don't get me started on PTSD caused by politicians sending American troops into immoral wars. In a refreshing change, here is a short term solution to help get homeless people off the streets and into safe accommodations. These are govt buildings that are no longer used. UCSD and SDSU Students protest banning homeless encampments. Mustard Seed Project students are advocating for humane solutions to help the homeless. But are their feel-good ideas preventing us from getting to a solution? UCSD Chancellor gets $500,000 raise. Pradeep Khosla was considering a higher paying university job elsewhere, so the UC Board of Regents stepped up to give him a $500,000 raise to keep him. The money is coming from wealthy donors that want to see his leadership continue at UC San Diego. Palomar Health Nurses to get a $100,000 retention bonus. Looking for a secure job with good pay and benefits? Consider nursing. There is a bidding war for nurses in San Diego as Kaiser Permanente prepares to open a new hospital in San Marcos. Palomar Health is fighting hard to prevent their nurses from jumping ship. Low Riders Rejoice! Cruising ban lifted in National City National City passed legislation to make cruising legal again. The Low Rider community is overjoyed as they can celebrate art, culture, and family in their community. This is the United States of America. Poway Unified School District Preparing for a School Bond In a recent op-ed, PUSD superintendent Marian Kim-Phelps made the case that school facilities are crumbling. They need more funding to upgrade and repair their infrastructure. Phelps is making the case for a future school bond funded by taxpayers. This would be on top of payments for the Billion Dollar Bond. Can PUSD self-finance their plan? I think so. San Diego Schools, Poway Unified Enrollment Declining Interesting data as less students are attending San Diego schools. It's due to a number of factors including a transition to homeschooling and private schools, families moving out of state due to high cost of living, and some upset with the politicization of curriculum. Less students = less funding. What can public schools do to attract more students? La Mesa Permitting and Signage Dysfunction The City of La Mesa is struggling to process building permits to allow businesses to start and homeowners to install granny flats. This is frustrating residents and local politicians are demanding change. Look in the crystal ball and we can see plans for more housing, more trolleys, more busses, more people, and now a per mile mileage tax. Can San Diego accommodate more growth? Here is what John Riley thinks: Is SANDAG's Mileage Tax moral or practical? This mileage tax proposed by SANDAG is causing plenty of discussion for San Diegans. We are already paying property taxes, sales taxes, gas taxes and income taxes to fund roads, highways and freeways. Now they want to add another tax. Didn't SANDAG pass the TRANSNET sales tax increase decades ago to fund this? How are they going to charge per mile? Seems like we will either have GPS devices tracking our driving patterns and this raises valid concerns about privacy. Their plan is already charging a grandma in Rancho Bernardo a sales tax increase so a student from a rich family can take the trolley to college at a low price. Is that moral? Are trains and subways the right vision for the future? Or will self-driving electric vehicles offer a better solution that can function as individualized pods that get you right to your destination while also working in a swarm like mass transit? Climate change activists are suing to stop Mira Mesa's long-term housing plan Mira Mesa recently announced a 30-year growth plan and Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation, or CERF, is suing the City of San Diego because the plan does not match up with their climate plan for carbon emission reduction. Now climate goals and housing goals are stalled while lawyers sort this out. Are these groups counter productively harming their own interests? Will the GOP kill Social Security? Social Security has been in the news since the State of the Union address when President Biden accused the Republicans of wanting to slash Social Security spending. Sure, there are a few Republicans that want to do this, but do you think the GOP has the cajónes to actually do it? There are housing issues up and down and all-around San Diego County. The San Diego City Council calls housing a fundamental human right. But is it? It's Wednesday, January 25th. The City of San Diego's City Council unanimously passed a resolution declaring housing as a fundamental human right. How can that be without violating the rights of others to provide it or fund it? Turns out that they really didn't mean it. They just call the statement aspirational. Sheesh. We have a legit housing problem, but is this the way to solve it? Besides, what is a right anyway? University City to more than Double in 30 Years Mira Mesa recently announced a 30-year growth plan. Now University City has done the same. University City wants to grow from 27,000 housing units to 57,000 housing units. They expect to do this with five focus zones with high rise apartments and transforming strip malls into mixed use residential/commercial space. Local residents are freaking out, as expected. San Diego's economy has radically grown. How can housing keep up? Escondido's Housing and Commercial Development Plans The old Palomar Hospital is being transformed into a 510 unit development called Palomar Heights with apartments, homes, markets, and a sky bar lounge. The Harvest Hills development near the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is in the planning states for 550 units. The North County Transit District is actively taking bids to add housing and more commercial property at their transit hub. Plus there are plans to convert the vacant Sears space at the Westfield Mall into a Costco. Escondido has already built so much new housing in their downtown area and more is on the way. Captain Charles R. MacVean U.S. Navy (Ret.), PhD joined Pete Neild and I to discuss submarine stories and his new book Down Deep. Submarine life is not easy. Tight quarters. Disciplined schedules. Everyone depending on someone else. It takes a high degree of trust and teamwork to make for a successful mission. Charlie shared many great stories involving his crew and some of his missions. It seemed that Admiral Hyman Rickover came up frequently in our discussions. Rickover was a demanding leader that enjoyed keeping his subordinates off balance, so they would be provide direct and truthful answers. Trust came up so often in this podcast conversation. Admiral Rickover extended a great degree of trust to Charles MacVean, but only after first testing his character and conviction. Rickover had confidence in MacVean's skills and capabilities. He just needed to believe that MacVean believed he could accomplish the task at hand. Charlie shared stories about the history of the USS Seawolf and the innovative nuclear experiments and challenges they faced. The stories of MacVean sitting down with his crew members to learn about their family and aspirations was moving. For many of these crewmen, this was a career they valued because they felt truly cared for. They had a mission, a purpose in life. The military saved many of these men's lives and catapulted them into upstanding men in society. This is a podcast conversation Pete Neild and I have been talking about for over a year. Frida Brunzell is a candidate for Poway Unified School District Board Trustee in Area B. This covers Northeast Rancho Bernardo and North Poway. Only 75% of PUSD Students Read at Grade Level Frida shared with me her frustrations with PUSD's reading curriculum. 25% of PUSD students are not reading at their grade level. According to Frida Brunzell, PUSD is still teaching reading using a flawed method invented in the 1960s. There are innovative and proven alternative methods to teach reading, but establishment interests, book publishers, and fear of change prevent school leaders from making the necessary corrections. We discussed dyslexia and how this is afflicting students here in our school district. When dyslexic students fail to learn to read, their likelihood of struggling in life or ending up in prison increases dramatically. Bullying is a Serious School Safety Issue Frida Brunzell also spoke at length about the problems of bullying on school campuses. Students are now recording the incidents and sharing them on social media. This further terrorizes the victim as they re-experience the trauma and continue to get ridiculed. Sadly, school officials are not taking strong action to combat bullying. Frida Brunzell is fluent in 4 Languages, has a master's degree in Chemical Engineering We also discussed Frida's backstory growing up in Sweden, attending college in Germany, and living in England and France as a young adult. Frida is fluent in 4 languages and has a master's degree in Chemical Engineering. Frida has also been very active as a PTA leader at both the school level and the district level. Students of Color at Poway Unified Frida also shared her thoughts about racism in Poway schools. As a parent of bi-racial Black students, she shared some of the difficulties her children have experienced. This led to further discussions of the Instagram account Black at PUSD, equity, inclusion, changes in curriculum, and CRT. Amit Asaravala is the President of the Poway Democratic Club. Amit joined me to discuss the tremendous surge of money in Poway politics, the changing voting demographics in Poway, and information on their endorsed candidates. Poway Campaign Finance The financial data was the most eye-opening. Individual people can donate up to $250 for a specific candidate. Amit Asaravala shared that even on the individual level, Poway candidate Brian Pepin has raised approximately $70,000. This is far greater than the typical $10,000 to $15,000 we would see in a typical district election. Over 80% of his donors are from outside of Poway. Meanwhile, there are political action committees involved in Poway politics attempting to influence the outcome in our local races. These PACs do not have a campaign limit and they receive big dollars from developers, housing contractors, and other individuals. Then the PACs cycle the money to other PACs who end up creating negative campaign ads against candidates that they oppose. Often these ads are heavily distorted and meant to scare the public. Community Voices, the San Diego Police Officers Association, and the Lincoln Club are players in this space. Poway Voter Demographics We also discussed the changing voter registration numbers for Poway. Our “City in the Country” has been a strong “red” city for a long time, but now things are changing. The Democrat voter registration has almost caught up with the Republicans. In fact, more Powegians voted for Biden than Trump in the 2020 election. Could this mean that the Poway Democratic Club's endorsed candidates might have a serious shot at beating Steve Vaus and the other GOP candidates? Tony Russo is a candidate for Poway City Council District 3. I live in District 3, so this was a great opportunity to learn more about Tony Russo's campaign for Poway. Lack of Trust from Poway Officials We started by discussing Tony's experience at the Green Valley Civic Association and Poway Chamber's Candidate Forum. His competitors were stressing safety as their key priority. Tony disagrees. He feels there is a serious lack of common-sense policies, transparency, trust, respect, and honesty from City Council and city officials. Tony Russo expressed how the people of Poway are angry and frustrated. Poway Housing Development We discussed at length the development projects underway in Poway. Tony felt that city officials have not effectively communicated the status of The Outpost project. He was disheartened by the mistakes made by city officials and developers, as well as how those failures were communicated to the people of Poway. Tony did not feel The Outpost was carefully reviewed by city officials and that was led to the water problems that undermined the project. Russo shared his thoughts about how council members would blame the developers rather than looking inwardly on errors made by city officials. Tony shared his thoughts on The Farm in Poway and the frustration of Stoneridge neighbors as they see new homes being built close to their property. He asked why The Farm is being built so quickly, yet some of the projects on Poway Road are moving much more slowly. Big Money Invested in Poway Politics Tony Russo expressed his surprise at the tremendous amount of money being spent to fund one of his competitors and other candidates in Poway. The organization Community Voice appears to be taking donations from developers and other influential people in Poway. Those dollars are provided to the San Diego Police Officer's Association who use those funds to create attack ads on specific candidates. Questions from Poway Voters We took so many great questions from the audience including conversations about the Martincoit-Stone Canyon intersection, district boundaries, the Poway Senior Center, and if Poway's slogan “The City in the Country” still matches with today's reality. Tony Russo Supports Small Businesses Tony was a small business owner and wants to see greater support from the city, or at least a reduction in red tape that slows businesses down. We discussed the plight of a fish market that is struggling to open his business but has been waiting on city inspectors to approve their permits. Tony Russo wants to support small businesses in Poway. We also discussed the issue of water rates, the Poway boil water ordinance, and the new water infrastructure project. Tony Russo is a family-oriented person. He talked at length about the joy he gets from supporting his three children, his involvement as a youth sports coach, and special memories of his mother. Yuri Bohlen is a candidate for Poway Mayor, and he joined me for a marathon 3-hour podcast covering so many hot topics in the City of Poway. Patrick Batten is a candidate for Poway School Board running in Area C covering parts of Rancho Penasquitos, Rancho Bernardo, and 4S Ranch. Patrick is attempting to win the race to fill the seat of departing incumbent TJ Zane. The US Marine Corps Patrick shared his background growing up with a single parent facing tremendous financial challenges. He discussed his time at San Diego State University and his career as a US Marine in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. Educational Curriculum We discussed his “Brilliant at the Basics” curriculum proposal focusing on reading, writing, and arithmetic. This led to further discussion of vocational education, critical race theory, and home economics courses. We also covered options available to students at PUSD to attend Design 39, JROTC at Westview High School, Spanish and Mandarin bi-lingual immersion programs in elementary schools, and 4H specialty classes at Poway High School. PUSD Finances and School Bonds Patrick Batten spoke about Poway Unified School District's financial condition, the broken air conditioning at Rancho Bernardo High School and Bernardo Heights Middle School, the failed Measure P bond, and the infamous Billion Dollar Bond. We also spoke about teachers/administrator union endorsements and how those relations impact financial budgeting for the district. COVID and Education We spent a good amount of time covering the way Poway Unified managed the COVID crisis including district communication challenges, masks, remote education, and how other schools successfully got students back in school sooner than PUSD. Poway Mayoral Candidate, Delta Esparza, joined me for a thoughtful and wide-ranging conversation in the JRP podcast studio. Delta is one of four challengers attempting to unseat Poway Mayor Steve Vaus. Our 1.5-hour discussion offers great insight into Delta's background, values, character, and vision for Poway. Highlights include: Delta's family background growing up in South LA to immigrant parents. Delta was the first person in her family to achieve a college degree. She later went on to a master's degree and a career in computer science in the defense industry. Delta Esparza shared her experiences visiting Poway's trails, open spaces, restaurants, and the Poway Bowling Alley for years as a resident near Camino Del Norte and Paseo Lucido. She valued Poway so much, she purchased a home here in 2019 and began establishing her roots in our community. But as she began witnessing the changes in Poway, she realized that something was awry. She looked around for viable candidates that represented her values but could find none. So, she took the brave step to enter the race herself. We discussed her thoughts on Poway's General Plan and the overall vision the mayor has for the city. She shared her positive experiences in nearby cities like Carlsbad and Escondido that had strong, community-driven City Plans that were being implemented consistent with that vision. Why is Poway falling so short? Delta Esparza strongly values getting the residents of Poway involved. She wants to open the dialog and encourage input in less formal settings like town hall meetings and small gatherings. She does not think the Poway City Council properly listens to the people of Poway. Poway City Council Candidate, Kevin Juza, joined me for a fun and informative podcast conversation. Kevin is one of three candidates running in my own District 3. We chatted for nearly 2 hours and had terrific input from the live audience spanning topics like: Kevin's family background in Indianapolis, Northern California, Minnesota, and eventually coming to Poway. His career as a business consultant/coach and his volunteer roles in the Poway community. His thoughts on City Planning, the city's General Plan, smart development, negotiations with developers, and the construction projects on Poway Rd and The Farm. We dove deep on issues to address The Outpost development (aka The Hole in the Ground) and the alleged violations of developers at The Farm building too close to other people's parcels. Kevin really focused on common sense solutions and transparency of policy details for the people. Kevin Juza shared his concern that Poway does not have a Climate Action Plan. He wants to have an open conversation to understand what the people want and then put together a plan that reflects the desires of the community. We discussed the issues facing District 3 including Twin Peaks, Old Poway Park, trails, open space, and ADUs (Granny Flats). Kevin shared his concerns about how walking paths and trails are often disconnected or getting disrupted by development. Kevin wants to preserve those paths and expand them. We got into the lack of affordable housing in Poway, it's impact on first responders and other workers, and the challenges that may be coming from Sacramento. This then led to a discussion about the Big Stone Lodge property, it's non-viability as a housing site, and its historical significance in Poway. (and our brain freeze failing to remember the name of the facility. LOL.) Kevin Juza shared his thoughts on addressing water infrastructure, strategies to capture and preserve water, ideas on lowering water rates, and the possibility of a water infrastructure bond in Poway's future. With a city council of five people (4 council members plus a mayor) and three of those spots up for election, we discussed various scenarios of what the council dynamic would be like with new voices offering innovative ideas and perspectives. This was such an enjoyable podcast conversation with Poway City Council Candidate, Hiram Soto. We covered a tremendous amount of ground in this 1.5-hour podcast discussion including: Hiram's family background in Mexico His career as a journalist at the San Diego Union Tribune and how that shaped him on the issues of transparency, integrity, and digging for the truth. His surprise that a Poway Councilperson was appointed for an open seat who had only lived in Poway for a few months. This circumvention of the voters and a weak democratic process were the catalysts for him to become a candidate. We spoke about the development throughout Poway and his approach to finding the right balance of development, infrastructure, affordable housing, and traffic. Hiram Soto was very passionate about the lack of a Climate Action Plan for the City of Poway. He wants to bring solar power to City Hall and convert city vehicles to EVs to save money and improve the environment. Plus, he wants to help educate homeowners and businesses about the rebate opportunities from the State of CA to convert to solar. Hiram shared some of his experiences on the campaign trail including his positive experiences meeting people throughout the city, some demanding “get them all out!,” and some of the shenanigans of sign stealing. Urbn Leaf wants to move into Rancho Bernardo Urbn Leaf, a marijuana dispensary, wants to move into the long abandoned El Torito restaurant location in Rancho Bernardo. As you might imagine, the locals are not taking this Rancho Bernardo marijuana situation sitting down. We cover the story, the objections by the RB Community Planning Board, the objections by residents and the churches, and the comments from notable community leaders Robin Kaufman, Patrick Batten and Marni von Wilpert. It seems to me that many people continue to see cannabis as some sort of Reefer Madness drug that corrupts society rather than the medicine that it is. We examine the benefits of cannabis as well the community standards when it comes to more dangerous drugs like alcohol.
