    Frida Brunzell, Poway Unified School District Candidate

    Frida Brunzell is a candidate for Poway Unified School District Board Trustee in Area B. This covers Northeast Rancho Bernardo and North Poway. Only 75% of PUSD Students Read at Grade Level Frida shared with me her frustrations with PUSD's reading curriculum. 25% of PUSD students are not reading at their grade level. According to Frida Brunzell, PUSD is still teaching reading using a flawed method invented in the 1960s. There are innovative and proven alternative methods to teach reading, but establishment interests, book publishers, and fear of change prevent school leaders from making the necessary corrections. We discussed dyslexia and how this is afflicting students here in our school district. When dyslexic students fail to learn to read, their likelihood of struggling in life or ending up in prison increases dramatically. Bullying is a Serious School Safety Issue Frida Brunzell also spoke at length about the problems of bullying on school campuses. Students are now recording the incidents and sharing them on social media. This further terrorizes the victim as they re-experience the trauma and continue to get ridiculed. Sadly, school officials are not taking strong action to combat bullying. Frida Brunzell is fluent in 4 Languages, has a master's degree in Chemical Engineering We also discussed Frida's backstory growing up in Sweden, attending college in Germany, and living in England and France as a young adult. Frida is fluent in 4 languages and has a master's degree in Chemical Engineering. Frida has also been very active as a PTA leader at both the school level and the district level. Students of Color at Poway Unified Frida also shared her thoughts about racism in Poway schools. As a parent of bi-racial Black students, she shared some of the difficulties her children have experienced. This led to further discussions of the Instagram account Black at PUSD, equity, inclusion, changes in curriculum, and CRT. Frida Brunzell helped start the JEDI group that stands for Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. We also discussed PUSD's COVID policy, failing school infrastructure, the potential of a future school bond, PUSD's budget, and arts and music education.     There is one week to go until Election Day and the drama in the Poway elections is heating up! Pete Neild joined me to cover a range of issues and candidates in this Poway Elections Preview episode. Poway Elections Drama We discuss the Holly Oak community's objection to the new development along Poway Road, as well as the “solidarity press conference” that was organized and then later cancelled. We discuss the proposed housing development, housing density, architecture, street entrances, and an overall frustration with Poway city leaders on communication. Then Pete and I shared our thoughts on the recent Amit Asaravala podcast. We discussed changing voter registration demographics in Poway as well as the huge influx of outside money into this election cycle. We break down more of the specifics on the money spent by PACs, developers, and locals, including the financial data on the Democratic endorsed candidates.     Amit Asaravala, Poway Democratic Club

    Amit Asaravala is the President of the Poway Democratic Club. Amit joined me to discuss the tremendous surge of money in Poway politics, the changing voting demographics in Poway, and information on their endorsed candidates. Poway Campaign Finance The financial data was the most eye-opening. Individual people can donate up to $250 for a specific candidate. Amit Asaravala shared that even on the individual level, Poway candidate Brian Pepin has raised approximately $70,000. This is far greater than the typical $10,000 to $15,000 we would see in a typical district election. Over 80% of his donors are from outside of Poway. Meanwhile, there are political action committees involved in Poway politics attempting to influence the outcome in our local races. These PACs do not have a campaign limit and they receive big dollars from developers, housing contractors, and other individuals. Then the PACs cycle the money to other PACs who end up creating negative campaign ads against candidates that they oppose. Often these ads are heavily distorted and meant to scare the public. Community Voices, the San Diego Police Officers Association, and the Lincoln Club are players in this space. Poway Voter Demographics We also discussed the changing voter registration numbers for Poway. Our “City in the Country” has been a strong “red” city for a long time, but now things are changing. The Democrat voter registration has almost caught up with the Republicans. In fact, more Powegians voted for Biden than Trump in the 2020 election. Could this mean that the Poway Democratic Club's endorsed candidates might have a serious shot at beating Steve Vaus and the other GOP candidates?     Tony Russo, Poway City Council Candidate

    Tony Russo is a candidate for Poway City Council District 3. I live in District 3, so this was a great opportunity to learn more about Tony Russo's campaign for Poway. Lack of Trust from Poway Officials We started by discussing Tony's experience at the Green Valley Civic Association and Poway Chamber's Candidate Forum. His competitors were stressing safety as their key priority. Tony disagrees. He feels there is a serious lack of common-sense policies, transparency, trust, respect, and honesty from City Council and city officials. Tony Russo expressed how the people of Poway are angry and frustrated. Poway Housing Development We discussed at length the development projects underway in Poway. Tony felt that city officials have not effectively communicated the status of The Outpost project. He was disheartened by the mistakes made by city officials and developers, as well as how those failures were communicated to the people of Poway. Tony did not feel The Outpost was carefully reviewed by city officials and that was led to the water problems that undermined the project. Russo shared his thoughts about how council members would blame the developers rather than looking inwardly on errors made by city officials. Tony shared his thoughts on The Farm in Poway and the frustration of Stoneridge neighbors as they see new homes being built close to their property. He asked why The Farm is being built so quickly, yet some of the projects on Poway Road are moving much more slowly. Big Money Invested in Poway Politics Tony Russo expressed his surprise at the tremendous amount of money being spent to fund one of his competitors and other candidates in Poway. The organization Community Voice appears to be taking donations from developers and other influential people in Poway. Those dollars are provided to the San Diego Police Officer's Association who use those funds to create attack ads on specific candidates. Questions from Poway Voters We took so many great questions from the audience including conversations about the Martincoit-Stone Canyon intersection, district boundaries, the Poway Senior Center, and if Poway's slogan “The City in the Country” still matches with today's reality. Tony Russo Supports Small Businesses Tony was a small business owner and wants to see greater support from the city, or at least a reduction in red tape that slows businesses down. We discussed the plight of a fish market that is struggling to open his business but has been waiting on city inspectors to approve their permits. Tony Russo wants to support small businesses in Poway. We also discussed the issue of water rates, the Poway boil water ordinance, and the new water infrastructure project. Tony Russo is a family-oriented person. He talked at length about the joy he gets from supporting his three children, his involvement as a youth sports coach, and special memories of his mother.     Yuri Bohlen is a candidate for Poway Mayor, and he joined me for a marathon 3-hour podcast covering so many hot topics in the City of Poway. Our livestream audience was also continually active presenting questions and comments for Yuri to respond to. Here are the highlights: Yuri wants to make “Poway the City in the Country” again. He wants to stop unfair housing mandates from Sacramento and let Poway make decisions for Poway's own future. We spoke about many of the development projects going on in Poway including the Outpost, Fairfield, and The Farm in Poway. Yuri Bohlen shared his plans to improve senior services and the homeless. Yuri felt passionately about the thrift stores displaced by the Fairfield development project. He wants to work with Poway Councilperson, Caylin Frank, to help these thrift shops find a new home. Yuri wants to improve communication with the people and get their input on housing development with a Residential District Review committee.     Patrick Batten is a candidate for Poway School Board running in Area C covering parts of Rancho Penasquitos, Rancho Bernardo, and 4S Ranch. Patrick is attempting to win the race to fill the seat of departing incumbent TJ Zane. The US Marine Corps Patrick shared his background growing up with a single parent facing tremendous financial challenges. He discussed his time at San Diego State University and his career as a US Marine in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. Educational Curriculum We discussed his “Brilliant at the Basics” curriculum proposal focusing on reading, writing, and arithmetic. This led to further discussion of vocational education, critical race theory, and home economics courses. We also covered options available to students at PUSD to attend Design 39, JROTC at Westview High School, Spanish and Mandarin bi-lingual immersion programs in elementary schools, and 4H specialty classes at Poway High School. PUSD Finances and School Bonds Patrick Batten spoke about Poway Unified School District's financial condition, the broken air conditioning at Rancho Bernardo High School and Bernardo Heights Middle School, the failed Measure P bond, and the infamous Billion Dollar Bond.     Poway Mayoral Candidate, Delta Esparza, joined me for a thoughtful and wide-ranging conversation in the JRP podcast studio. Delta is one of four challengers attempting to unseat Poway Mayor Steve Vaus. Our 1.5-hour discussion offers great insight into Delta's background, values, character, and vision for Poway. Highlights include: Delta's family background growing up in South LA to immigrant parents. Delta was the first person in her family to achieve a college degree. She later went on to a master's degree and a career in computer science in the defense industry. Delta Esparza shared her experiences visiting Poway's trails, open spaces, restaurants, and the Poway Bowling Alley for years as a resident near Camino Del Norte and Paseo Lucido. She valued Poway so much, she purchased a home here in 2019 and began establishing her roots in our community. But as she began witnessing the changes in Poway, she realized that something was awry. She looked around for viable candidates that represented her values but could find none. So, she took the brave step to enter the race herself. We discussed her thoughts on Poway's General Plan and the overall vision the mayor has for the city. She shared her positive experiences in nearby cities like Carlsbad and Escondido that had strong, community-driven City Plans that were being implemented consistent with that vision. Why is Poway falling so short? Delta Esparza strongly values getting the residents of Poway involved. She does not think the Poway City Council properly listens to the people of Poway.     Poway City Council Candidate, Kevin Juza, joined me for a fun and informative podcast conversation. Kevin is one of three candidates running in my own District 3. We chatted for nearly 2 hours and had terrific input from the live audience spanning topics like: Kevin's family background in Indianapolis, Northern California, Minnesota, and eventually coming to Poway. His career as a business consultant/coach and his volunteer roles in the Poway community. His thoughts on City Planning, the city's General Plan, smart development, negotiations with developers, and the construction projects on Poway Rd and The Farm. We dove deep on issues to address The Outpost development (aka The Hole in the Ground) and the alleged violations of developers at The Farm building too close to other people's parcels. Kevin really focused on common sense solutions and transparency of policy details for the people. Kevin Juza shared his concern that Poway does not have a Climate Action Plan. He wants to have an open conversation to understand what the people want and then put together a plan that reflects the desires of the community. We discussed the issues facing District 3 including Twin Peaks, Old Poway Park, trails, open space, and ADUs (Granny Flats). Kevin shared his concerns about how walking paths and trails are often disconnected or getting disrupted by development. Kevin wants to preserve those paths and expand them. We got into the lack of affordable housing in Poway, it's impact on first responders and other workers, and the challenges that may be coming from Sacramento. This then led to a discussion about the Big Stone Lodge property, it's non-viability as a housing site, and its historical significance in Poway. (and our brain freeze failing to remember the name of the facility. LOL.) Kevin Juza shared his thoughts on addressing water infrastructure, strategies to capture and preserve water, ideas on lowering water rates, and the possibility of a water infrastructure bond in Poway's future. With a city council of five people (4 council members plus a mayor) and three of those spots up for election, we discussed various scenarios of what the council dynamic would be like with new voices offering innovative ideas and perspectives.     This was such an enjoyable podcast conversation with Poway City Council Candidate, Hiram Soto. We covered a tremendous amount of ground in this 1.5-hour podcast discussion including: Hiram's family background in Mexico His career as a journalist at the San Diego Union Tribune and how that shaped him on the issues of transparency, integrity, and digging for the truth. His surprise that a Poway Councilperson was appointed for an open seat who had only lived in Poway for a few months. This circumvention of the voters and a weak democratic process were the catalysts for him to become a candidate. We spoke about the development throughout Poway and his approach to finding the right balance of development, infrastructure, affordable housing, and traffic. Hiram Soto was very passionate about the lack of a Climate Action Plan for the City of Poway. He wants to bring solar power to City Hall and convert city vehicles to EVs to save money and improve the environment. Plus, he wants to help educate homeowners and businesses about the rebate opportunities from the State of CA to convert to solar. Hiram shared some of his experiences on the campaign trail including his positive experiences meeting people throughout the city, some demanding “get them all out!,” and some of the shenanigans of sign stealing.     Urbn Leaf wants to move into Rancho Bernardo Urbn Leaf, a marijuana dispensary, wants to move into the long abandoned El Torito restaurant location in Rancho Bernardo.  As you might imagine, the locals are not taking this Rancho Bernardo marijuana situation sitting down. We cover the story, the objections by the RB Community Planning Board, the objections by residents and the churches, and the comments from notable community leaders Robin Kaufman, Patrick Batten and Marni von Wilpert. It seems to me that many people continue to see cannabis as some sort of Reefer Madness drug that corrupts society rather than the medicine that it is.     Lee Hacksaw Hamilton, History of Sports Talk Radio

    Legendary sports radio and NFL play-by-play icon, Lee “Hacksaw” Hamilton joined for a wide conversation about his career, the San Diego sports media market, the San Diego Chargers and more. Hacksaw and the History of Sports Talk Radio Lee shared his Long Island roots and the start of his radio news/DJ career in his college days on a radio station in Appalachia.  After a great run broadcasting pro hockey in Cleveland, he took his talents to the desert to announce Arizona State football and basketball. Hacksaw also hosted a sports talk show on KTAR in Phoenix shocking the locals with critical comments of ASU's football suspension, the Suns getting blown out in the first round of the 1981 NBA playoffs, and the ineptitude of Bowie Kuhn during the 1981 MLB strike. This was the start of the “Best 15 Minutes in Radio.” This was the start of “Putting Topics on the Table.”  “React!”  Lee was determined to grab his listeners by the throat and hold them for 4 hours of compelling sports talk radio. Hacksaw's reputation in Arizona led to a 1986 phone call from the Noble Broadcast Group in San Diego to be the San Diego Chargers play by play guy and start a sports talk show on the Mighty 690.  At the time the station was broadcasting rock n roll and Wolfman Jack. Little did they know that things were going to radically change in the next few years. Lee was the only sports guy in the entire station, and he started with a blank slate.  How in the hell was he going to pull this off? He started by creating a 9-hour NFL Sunday broadcast with a 2-hour Countdown to Kickoff pre-game show, the live game, and then a post-game show with caller participation. The Mighty 690 Sports Talk Radio Meanwhile, every afternoon drivetime Hacksaw hosted his talk radio show using many of his provocative techniques to drive listenership. Lee was a sensation bringing sports facts, stats, and opinions in the late 1980s. He was the internet before the internet was a thing. After a brief transition to sports and news talk, the station went 100% sports starting in 1989. The Mighty 690 was the 3rd radio station in America to go all sports, and the first on the west coast. 690 had a “blowtorch signal” that carried Lee's show from “Baja to the Canadian Rockies” As 690 went all sports, many new voices took the microphone to create a wide variety of opinions and styles on sports talk: Jim Rome came on board to start his Scrub Saturday show. He later got the night shift right after Hacksaw's show, working on developing his style, his smack, and his clones. Rome later went on to national fame, but did you know Hacksaw was first offered the national gig prior to Rome but he turned it down. Steve Hartman joins the station and with Lee's recommendation he was paired up with former Monday Night Football producer Chet Forte.  Two loudmouth guys: one young, one old, one west coast, one east coast.  It was perfect. Steve Mason and John Ireland took on the morning show and later saw their careers take them to new places. Scott Kaplan and Billy Ray Smith joined the station creating a strong show and a loyal listening audience of Great Friends. The Coach John Kentera joins the station sharing his wealth of knowledge of local high school sports, plus offering his commentary on the San Diego pro and collegiate sports teams. Hacksaw on the Chargers: I root for Herbert to Win, but Spanos to Lose As a long time voice of the San Diego Chargers play-by-play, and as an NFL junkie, Hacksaw was right at home broadcasting the Chargers every Sunday. We retrace some of the magical moments of the Chargers Super Bowl season including stories about Bobby Ross, Stan Humphries, Stan Brock, Tony Martin, Dennis Gibson, and the playoff run against the Dolphins in Steelers.     We are hearing shrieks of “Corporate Greed!” as inflation surges. But is it really Corporate Greed? Corporations are Price Gouging!  Really? Prices are up most everywhere: gas, food, labor. Inflation is now at 9.1%. I haven't seen it this high since I was in high school over 40 years ago. Some are calling this price gouging or corporate greed, but is it? Businesses are always seeking to maximize profit. That's what they do. That's their fiduciary responsibility to taxpayers. So why are prices up now? There is High Demand. $6T of freshly printed stimulus money is still flooding the market driving demand ($4T Trump, $2T Biden). People are returning to “normalcy” after the pandemic and traveling on vacation. There has been pent up demand for travel and leisure as people hunkered down during the pandemic. Plus, interest rates have been artificially low for decades driving further demand. At the same time there is Limited Supply.  The Supply Chain is still sputtering. There are shortages of goods and key parts required in manufacturing. There continues to be a worker shortage as workers make positive, strategic changes to their career plan. But still the labor participation rate is far too low. Then there are cases where there is a shockingly low amount of competition (spoiler alert: typically due to government regulations). Oh, and did we forget the massive government shutdowns of the economy which reduced production? We all know from Economics 101 that when demand is high and supply is low, then prices go up. So, are corporations actually greedy?  Or are they just responding to market conditions and incentives. Today is a great time to sell a home.  Demand is high and inventory is limited (albeit things have relaxed a bit in the last few months). In a market like this sellers can get top dollar when they sell their home.  If you were selling your home, would you take the highest bid for your home?  Does this make you greedy?  Or are you just responding to market conditions and incentives? Gasoline is over $6 per Gallon in California I normally don't pay much attention to gas prices since I drive an EV. But with so much complaining about gas prices I have started paying attention. Wow! Prices are high.  Really high.  Premium gas is often over $6.50 per gallon in my community. This must be those greedy oil companies price gouging, right?  After all, corporate profits for oil companies are at an all-time high. Let's break it down. There is high demand for gas.  We are coming out of the pandemic and there is pent up demand for travel. More people are commuting to work as companies ask employees to work in the office. Plus, it is summertime when prices always go up due to higher demand and the requirement here in California for the summer blend gasoline due to environmentalism. At the same time supply is low.  Refineries are still not operating at full production.  Surely this must be some sinister plot by oil companies to limit supply, right? During the pandemic gas prices plummeted due to low demand. Oil companies were losing money. So, they shut down refineries and slowed down production. After all, why produce more product when you are losing money doing it? Now suddenly the economy opens back up and it is taking a while for these refineries to catch back up. It's difficult to find workers. We still have that trucker shortage problem.  Plus, never mind the fact that California is making it illegal for owner operators to do trucking. Then ask yourself, why are there few if any new refineries?  Surely when demand for gas is so high and profit opportunity is so great, you would expect entrepreneurs to enter the market to produce more gasoline, right?  Or less competitive oil companies would see this as an opportunity to produce more supply at a slightly lower price to grab more market share.     Roe vs Wade has been overturned. What does this mean about individual rights? The End of Roe vs Wade The most divisive issue in our culture has been flipped on its ear thanks to SCOTUS overturning Roe vs Wade. Now individual states can establish their own rules. States have been preparing for this outcome with some states reinforcing the right to choose and other states doing the opposite. Huge demonstrations are happening across America. I thought this would never happen. I was wrong. As a student at UC San Diego, the abortion issue was the first political topic I wrestled with. I saw the logic and righteousness in the idea of being in charge of your own life, particularly the idea of body sovereignty. It has shaped how I see a range of issues today. There are rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Some think healthcare is a right. So, what is a right? A “right” is a moral principle defining and sanctioning a man's freedom of action in a social context. There is only one fundamental right: a man's right to his own life. All the other rights, like freedom of speech or property rights, are its consequences or corollaries.  This means that many things some declare as rights are not actually rights. For example, a right to healthcare can only be provided by violating the rights of other people to provide the service or fund it. A lot of people think it can be anything they want, but here's a test: If someone else has to give you something, rather than just not harming you, it's not a right. Billy the Kid Review I really enjoyed the Epix series Billy the Kid and recommend you consider it. His story as the son of Irish immigrants leaving New York City to risk a trip westward is similar to what my own Irish ancestors did. People traveled with little resources across treacherous terrain and dangerous circumstances for a better life. They bet on themselves. They believed in themselves. Billy lived from 1859-1881. This is a transformational time in human history. The Industrial Revolution and Capitalism were producing innovative, life-improving technologies. Immigrants from all over the world flocked to America to seek opportunity. America expanded west and built a nation. This series tackles many powerful values like justice, integrity, independence, trust, and honesty. These are all issues I enjoy discussing in my podcast.     Pursuing Happiness in a Housing Crisis, JRP0278

    How can you pursue your happiness in a housing crisis? Or better yet, how can you not violate the right of others to do the same? Housing Crisis We examine the housing crisis and the unintended consequences of central planning. Despite do-gooders' best efforts to make housing affordable, we have homelessness and insane housing prices. We explore the $1 million per unit “low income” housing units and the regulations that make them so expensive. It's nice to see open-minded people changing the rules in San Diego. A 443-unit apartment building is going up in downtown San Diego near Petco Park. This complex will only have fifty-two parking spots. Where will people park? Can this work? It sure can for renters that will be enjoying rental prices 20-25% less expensive than comparable units in the same area. This building with micro-units will serve as a quasi-affordable housing complex. Then we take a closer look at the Oak Knoll housing project in Poway that is under review by the City Council. Local activists Chris Cruse and Hiram Soto have objections to this “sardine can” housing complex. Is Poway “governed by the whim of developers” or is allowing this construction consistent with property rights? Are property owners and developers allowed to pursue their happiness, or should their rights to do so be violated? SCOTUS and School Choice I don't know about you, but I am incredibly pleased about the Supreme Court's recent decision to allow school vouchers at private religious schools. Unlocking government's near monopoly on education will open up a wide range of innovative schools offering a range of specialized curricula. If Pell Grants and the GI Bill can be used as a voucher at private, religious universities, then it seems consistent to allow school vouchers to do the same in K-12 education. Netflix Series Dark I really enjoyed series about four families in a small German town dealing with missing children, complicated relationships, a suspect nuclear power plant, and mysterious caves. This show took it all to a great sci-fi level by introducing a time travel plot line that made the story lines complex and enjoyable. Philosophically I was disappointed with their focus on fate and determinism, but free will wins at the end of the final season. I strongly recommend this series. Critics widely praise it: IMDB 8.7, Rotten Tomatoes 95%. English overdubs and subtitles work very well. #housingcrisis #schoolchoice #dark Thank you!     Golden State Warriors, Social Security, Inflation, JRP0277

    The Golden State Warriors are enjoying their 6th NBA Finals in 8 years and are on the cusp of their fourth championship in that timeframe. I share my early memories as a Golden State Warriors fan. We then discuss financial planning for retirement and the shocking low savings rates in America. Is this due to a false sense of security that government will save the day? Is it a huge financial education deficit? Is it weak long-term thinking? It's time again to hear the Chicken Little rants of progressives that the Republicans are going to kill Social Security and Medicare. We hear this every election cycle when in reality Republicans have expanded both programs. The GOP are considering a bill to sunset all federal government programs every 5 years with the idea that they would be reaffirmed, optimized, or phased out. There is no way the GOP would cut these important programs that their senior citizen constituents depend on. It would be political suicide. Then we discuss the Federal Reserve's plan to increase interest rates in order to cool off the economy to fight inflation. This will lead to layoffs, bankruptcies, and further damage.     Gun Rights, Uvalde, and a New Approach, JRP0276

    It's time for America to come together to resolve gun violence and gun rights. I have been doing deep thinking in the wake of the Uvalde massacre. I have been exploring American history, American values, and the rights that should be protected in America. We can't remain in this Rinse and Repeat Cycle of mass shootings and refusing to do anything about it. I have a different approach that can bring the right wing and the left wing together. It's an approach that goes back to the themes of our nation's founding. It's an approach that can work. Matthew McConaughey recently appeared at a White house Press Briefing calling for both sides to rise up above politics. He said we have a life preservation problem on our hands. We have a chance to reach for and grasp a higher ground. McConaughey said that we need to return to American Values. Say what you will of McConaughey's politics, but he is right. What are our American values? Let's take a look at our nation's founding document, The Declaration of Independence. America's founding values are laid out clear as day: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men… There it is. Govt's role is to protect our right of liberty, but also our right of life. This is the zone where the gun rights and gun violence issues run into conflict. Let's be objective for a moment. What is the purpose of a gun? A gun is a weapon. A gun is built to injure or kill another living being. A gun's purpose is partly to violate our inalienable right to life. So how can our rights of life and liberty be reconciled? It is important to differentiate offense and defense. A gun for defense is consistent with our right to life. If you are about to be attacked, raped, robbed, or killed, a gun for self-defense will give you some form of protection. A gun for self-defense, like a handgun, is absolutely consistent with our inalienable rights. On the other hand, if you buy a gun to go on offense with the intent to kill a single person, or a classroom of nineteen fourth graders, that action is a violation of their right to life. I used to oppose gun control laws because they are an infringement of the second amendment. But how does it make sense to arm someone with a semi-automatic rifle and hundreds of rounds of ammunition without any questions or qualifications? This is a threat to our right to life. Most everyone agrees mass shootings are partly a mental health problem. Why should it be legal to sell guns and ammo that can be used for a mass shooting without a background check or some other qualifier? Gun control laws to address guns used on offense is absolutely consistent with our inalienable rights. Those gun owners still have the liberty to acquire the weapon if they meet those qualifications. Plus, they will always have the right to purchase a weapon for self-defense. Plus, majorities in both support certain gun control laws. Preventing those with mental illnesses from purchasing guns has the support of 85% of Republicans and 90% of Democrats. Requiring background checks is supported by 70% of Republicans and 92% of Democrats. But still gun control laws are not going to solve the entire problem of gun violence. But they can move the needle. They can make some difference. At some point we are going to have to address gun rights and the Second Amendment. As long as there is language that says, “shall not be infringed,” there is always going to be an active and vocal gun rights group justified in their right to acquire an arsenal. If we don't revise the Second Amendment, we are going to remain mired in this repeat pattern of mass shootings. This is a big ask and will require leadership.     Great Replacement Theory vs Pursuit of Happiness, JRP0275

    The Great Replacement Theory has been in the news since it was mentioned in the Buffalo mass shooter's manifesto. Let's be real. This is a conspiracy theory based on racism and fear of “different” people coming to America to replace white voters. Different races, unfamiliar cultures, and diverse languages all coming to America. OMG. Change is uncomfortable. For some people, change is a threat. “Patriots” are fearful that immigrants are pursuing their happiness. This is the land of freedom, right? We hear this white supremacy rhetoric from politicians that push border walls, travel bans, and referring immigrants as invaders. It's downright evil. The right wingers fear it, but the left wingers often gleefully embrace it. They like the idea that whites are no longer the majority. The Great Replacement Theory is foolish collectivist thinking. It's obsession over political identity groups rather than individuals. Great Replacement Theory is a direct contradiction of our inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. My family immigrated from Ireland in the latter part of the 19th century. Like so many immigrants of that time between the Civil War and World War 1, they came here seeking a better life for their family. They embraced America's founding values of our inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These rights are for EVERYONE. Now the children of immigrants are fearful of immigrants. The children of ancestors pursuing their happiness want to block immigrants desire to do the same thing. It is only natural that future generations will replace current generations. It is only natural that a nation that prides itself as a “Shining City on a Hill” is going to attract immigrants from all over the globe. America is a nation of immigrants. Let's embrace this fact. It's what makes America truly special. Pay Your Fair Share to Fight Inflation The “moderate” Democrat President Biden tweets that corporations must pay their fair share in taxes to fight inflation. I double checked to make sure this wasn't a Bernie tweet. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos rightfully called out Biden for this disinformation and misdirection. https://twitter.com/JeffBezos/status/1525846743278944256 Then we hear from the new White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre completely flail responding to a reporter calling out Biden for the same nonsense. https://twitter.com/thejcoop/status/1526289490377158657 The fact is that this inflation is a monetary policy problem caused by the printing and distribution of $6 trillion in new cash. Getting out of the problem is going to be painful. These politicians simply won't address reality and will instead manipulate the people with this kind of messaging while claiming to fight against disinformation. Kudos to Jeff Bezos for calling out this B.S. Baby Formula Crisis There are huge shortages of baby formula. 40% or more of supply is unavailable. How did we get into this mess? Government COVID policy certainly played a role. Parents hoard baby formula like toilet paper. Then demand decreases and so does production. Then suddenly the economy opens up, but production has been downscaled and can't meet the demand. Manufacturing plants and trucking companies cannot find workers. Meanwhile, less adults are having babies during COVID. Then as the economy opens back up, there is a surge of new babies and even greater demand for formula. Then a large plant gets shut down and we have total chaos. But if we dig deeper, we realize there are many government policies that distort the market. Tariffs of 14% or higher on imports to protect domestic dairy industry.Restrictions on imports from Canada due to NAFTA.FDA seizing baby formula like the DEA doing drug busts because baby formula is not properly labeled.Government buying approximately 50% of product inventory at extremely low prices for the WIC welfare...

    Seven Cures to a Lean Purse The First Cure: Start thy purse to fattening. Arkad (Richest Man in Babylon) advises saving 10% of your annual income to start building up your wealth (or purse). "For every ten coins thou placest within thy purse take out for use but nine. Thy purse will start to fatten at once and its increasing weight will feel good in thy hand and bring satisfaction to thy soul". We discuss automated deduction and my personal revelation that wealth is independence.  It's not simply saving to buy, saving for rainy day, saving for retirement. It is saving so I have freedom to do what I want, when I want, with whom I want, without regard to the cost. The Second Cure: Control thy expenditures. Arkad advises against luxury expenditures that ultimately become confused as necessities. "The gold we may retain from our earnings is but the start", and, "What each of us calls our 'necessary expenses' will always grow to equal our incomes unless we protest to the contrary", and, "Confuse not the necessary expenses with thy desires". We discuss personal strategies of electric vehicles and solar to save money.  We comment on the terrible leadership from the Federal Government. I recommend a list of expenditures that should be cut from the federal budget. The Third Cure: Make thy gold multiply. Arkad advises to invest and to compound the investment return from these savings. "The earnings it will make shall build our fortunes ... Learn to make your treasure work for you. Make it your slave. Make its children and its children's children work for you". We discuss my 401K story from the early 1990s. The Fourth Cure: Guard thy treasures from loss. Arkad advises against taking a risk of loss and investing get-rich-quick schemes: "Is it wise to be intrigued by larger earnings when thy principal may be lost? I say not. The penalty of risk is probable loss. Study carefully, before parting with thy treasure, each assurance that it may be safely reclaimed. Be not misled by thine own romantic desires to make wealth rapidly". Arkad also advices that you seek advice from those that are knowledgeable with money. "Gold flees the man who would force it to impossible earnings or who followeth the alluring advice of tricksters and schemers or who trusts it to his own inexperience and romantic desires in investment." Arkad's advice here is about avoiding get-rich-quick or very aggressive wealth creation strategies. We discuss the length of time it takes to save money. Manage your money carefully and make wise choices. The Fifth Cure: Make of thy dwelling a profitable investment. Arkad advises buying versus renting your principal residence, and to use your residence to establish a business. "I recommend that every man own the roof that sheltereth him and his", and, "Nor is it beyond the ability of any well-intentioned man to own his home". We discuss the housing crisis in California and San Diego, especially for first time homeowners. The Sixth Cure: Ensure a future income. Arkad advises on having a pension and future retirement income. "Therefore do I say that it behooves a man to make preparations for a suitable income in the days to come, when he is no longer young, and to make preparations for his family should he be no longer with them to comfort and support them". We discuss the benefits of having a financial planner. The Seventh Cure: Increase thy ability to earn. Arkad advises to keep developing your own skills to increase your investing wisdom and also to increase your earnings power.     Putin Justifying Invasion of Ukraine based on Blood and Religion Russian troops are at the Ukrainian border and invasion is imminent! Biden is trying to negotiate but doing so on weak footing. Meanwhile Trump is calling Putin a “genius” for his strategy. What in the hell is going on here? While these political leaders are consumed with tribalism, they are missing the opportunity to oppose Putin on the moral basis of our rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Justin Trudeau Emergency Orders Violating Individual Rights The truckers had a righteous cause opposing the vaccine mandate, but their “Freedom Convoy” ended up violating the liberty of Canadians to pursue their happiness. It was a mess and now Trudeau is making it worse. Trudeau's emergency powers are leading to police brutality in the streets and the seizing of financial assets with out due process or trial. How can you pursue your happiness in an environment like this? The Failed Recall of Poway Mayor Steve Vaus They never got enough signatures to get the recall on the ballot. I really wish the recall spokesperson Chris Olps could have joined me on a podcast conversation to make the case for the recall, but he never responded to requests. Isn't the answer obvious? We take a look at the UCSD study and discuss well known examples of players suspensions for marijuana or opioids.     Personal Success as a Skier, Student, Model and Symbol of International Unity Eileen Gu won the gold in the Big Air freestyle event Tuesday while competing for China in the Winter Olympics. But this episode is much more than her athletic feats. Gu's “right double 1440 safety” scored a 93.75 and vaulted her into first place. Her lead didn't last long. She headed to her last jump needing at least ninety-three points to leap from third to first. Her final trick, called a left double 1620 with a safety grab, scored 94.5 points and landed Gu a gold medal. This is a remarkable story of personal achievement. After all, shouldn't these celebrations of athletic success be what the Olympics are all about?  Sadly, too many people make this all about nationalist ideals and pitting one nation against another. Gu, an American citizen born in San Francisco, has been the target of a flood of hateful comments because of her choice to represent China in the 2022 Beijing Olympics…  a decision based on her love of her mother who was born in Shanghai and raised in Beijing. In Eileen Gu's press conference, she discussed her gold winning performance in musical terms by describing the rhythm and motion of the jump.     Why are UC Berkeley, Stanford, and UCLA so afraid of competing with San Diego State University? For the past 2-3 decades we have seen SDSU rise up both athletically and academically to create a national brand that is respected from coast to coast. SDSU regularly boasts some of the highest numbers of student applicants every year. At the same time, the Aztec men's basketball and football programs have a combined winning percentage ranked second in all of the United States in D1 sports. Yet UC Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA, and other universities have kept SDSU out of the Pac-12 conference. We break down the historical roots of the 2-tiered (actually 3-tiered) higher education system in California and how this battle between San Diego State and Cal/UCLA has been raging for over 6 decades. I also reflect on my own experiences as a graduate of UC San Diego, my rooting adoption of SDSU athletics, and UCSD's transition into D1 sports.
