International organisations have become major players in global affairs, with the European Union standing out as especially powerful. But the EU's decision-making processes often attract sharp criticism: requiring agreement among many states can cause paralysis, while overriding individual states raises concerns about sovereignty. This episode explores a new study that revisits how the EU has historically grappled with this tension, focusing on two pivotal moments—the Luxembourg Compromise of 1966 and the Paris Summit of 1974. The findings challenge long-held assumptions about the (in)effectiveness of decision making in the EU, and offer fresh insights into how the EU really works.Alan Renwick is joined by Dr Jonathan Golub, Associate Professor in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Reading, and our very own Dr Michal Ovádek, Lecturer in European Institutions, Politics and Policy here in the UCL Department of Political Science. Mentioned in this episode:Golub, J. and Ovádek, M. Listen in as Mike gives his thoughts on eliminating commission breath as a salesperson; the secret to making your products or services too valuable for customers to pass up; and how adopting a mindset of receiving and surrender can take your career to the next level. As always, cheers to your evolution! Key Takeaways: Building relationships with everybody you interact with at your place of work, no matter your role at the company, is one of the primary drivers of career growth. Give a lot of your knowledge away for free to establish yourself as an authority in your space. David Golub is President at Golub Capital, a direct lender and credit manager established in 1994, and celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. As the son of a psychiatrist and psychologist, a path into finance was originally a divergent path, and a somewhat non-linear one at that.As we chart the course of David's career we chart the arc of Golub Capital's at the same time – discussing the origins of the concept of a private lending firm and how it had its roots in private equity.  Designed to solve a problem, offer certainty of execution and built on a network of relationships we hear how a lot of hard work – and a little bit of luck – lead to the positioning that they enjoy today. We move then to discuss the nature of the private credit market and how it has evolved over the course of Golub's history.  We examine its significantly enhanced breadth and sophistication today. One of David's key personal interests is in culture and we speak in particular about the role that culture plays at Golub.  The firm dedicates significant resources to training, coaching and creating a sense of belonging for its team members. We speak about the role of feedback and accountability as well as the way that junior professionals are mentored and learn how to take risk.  Finally we discuss the role of worrying and how for a credit investor it seems to go with the territory. Series 3 of 2024 is supported by Ruffer and Nuveen. Ruffer is a London based asset manager - founded in 1994 - managing over $25 billion for institutions, pension funds, charities and individuals. Welcome to the Market Moment! This week, Matt, John, and Lee discuss that six of the "Magnificent 7" (Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, Nvidia, Tesla) have gone down in the stock market. Jonathan Golub from UBS downgraded six of these, signaling a loss in momentum following their biggest market cap drop. This shift reflects concerns about where earnings are growing most, which could cause short-term disruption. Despite this, Golub remains positive about the broader market's trajectory, foreseeing continued growth supported by strong fundamentals and a robust economy. Tesla in particular has been struggling, which spawns a conversation about EVs. Next, the conversation turns to bipartisan worries in Washington about cheap Chinese goods. Both Biden and Trump advocate for tariffs on Chinese imports, though with different approaches. Despite declining steel imports from China, concerns persist about the impact of these goods on the US economy. Trump's proposal for significant tariffs could affect future trade and may have implications for inflation and global economics. Lastly, they cover recent bankruptcy filings by companies like Express and Red Lobster. These companies seek Chapter 11 protection to address financial pressures. Express hopes to facilitate an acquisition, while Red Lobster aims to renegotiate leases and tackle rising costs. Chapter 11 allows these companies to restructure debts while continuing operations, offering a chance for financial recovery. Lee, Matt, and John predict that due to high interest rates, we'll be seeing more businesses in bankruptcy. This week we responded to a comment about countries buying gold. As its director, he aims to hire researchers who look like they'll be changing fields in the future, combining boldness with humility – the "blank slate" with which they enter the new field is the best recipe for creativity. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Janine La Salle from UC Davis about her work on differential methylated regions in autism spectrum disorders. In our discussion, Janine LaSalle highlights her work on the placental epigenetic signature, which offers insights into the impact of fetal exposures and gene-environment interactions during the perinatal period. She emphasizes the placenta's value as a surrogate tissue for understanding human diseases. Her research on DNA methylation in the placenta across different mammalian species reveals consistent patterns in partially methylated and highly methylated domains. She explains the critical role of higher methylation levels in specific regions for gene expression and how this knowledge helps trace the placenta's developmental history. The conversation then delves into Dr. LaSalle's research on the link between placental DNA methylation and autism. Through epigenome-wide association studies, she discovered a novel autism gene and explored the effects of prenatal exposures on DNA methylation profiles. Additionally, she discusses the impact of maternal obesity on offspring neurodevelopment. Ultimately, the goal of her research is to contribute to precision public health and preventative healthcare with epigenetic signatures offering high potential for predicting and preventing future health problems.   References Schroeder, D. Kelly Ann Tinyes was at home babysitting her eight-year-old brother, Richie, on the afternoon of March 3, 1989 when the phone rang. Richie answered, talking briefly to the man on the other end of the line, before handing the phone to his sister, telling her it was someone named “John.” After a short conversation with “John,” Kelly hung up the phone and left the house around 3:15 pm, telling her brother she was going to her friend's house down the street and would be right back. It was the last time Kelly's family would see her alive.Thank you to the prodigious David White for research assistance :)ReferencesAssociated Press. 1990. "Sex motive charged in girl's slaying."
