This week on The Exit: Matt Frary got his start in online business during the dot com era. After graduating from business school and being unable to find a job, he went on an entrepreneurial journey that would have him building and selling five different online businesses. One thing he learned about himself was how he knew when it was time to sell. In his case, he loved the building and scaling phase but knew he was no longer the best person for his business once he grew it to the operational phase. He explains the difference between building a lifestyle business vs. a business you plan to exit. For those planning to exit, he emphasizes the importance of building businesses with a strong foundation, scalable solutions, and operating as if the company will be a large business in the future. He also discusses life after exiting, and making sure that, whether business or personal, you always have another “mountain to climb”. Matt Frary is a successful startup entrepreneur with over 15 years of experience, and he has built and sold five different startups in the fields of affiliate marketing, performance marketing, digital marketing, and ecommerce consulting. Currently, Matt is the founder and managing member of Chief of Chaos Holdings, LLC, a company that focuses on management consulting, commercial real estate, angel investment, and startup mentorship. Matt is also the founder and CEO of Elite Media Partners, a performance marketing agency that specializes in growth marketing for B2B SaaS companies. He is also the vice president of brand strategy at The Academy of Pop, a revolutionary platform for artists and creators to learn and entertain in a web 3.0 environment. Elevate Summit Vol 2: The CMO's PlaybookContinuing our Christmas hits in affiliate marketing, we're looking at another great take from our Elevate Summit: how performance marketing is being adopted into brand management structures. Featuring insights from panel members, Helen Southgate from Acceleration Partners, Stephanie Harris from PartnerCentric, Seb Bardin from Unilever, and Matt Frary from The Partner Agency. This panel of great marketing minds is discussing with Lee-Ann the broad definitions that are lost on modern CMOs and how they can apply modern affiliate marketing methods. Listen here for the full details. What can we take into 2023?In order to give you the most up-to-date and detailed CMO's Playbook, we're looking at tips that you can learn from 2022 and take into 2023. Complete with insights from our Elevate Summit panel members. So, what's to be taken into the future?Stephanie Harris: “Performance doesn't mean there is no upfront investment.”The first piece of CMOs of the affiliate marketing agency is to make sure you are putting in as much as you intend to get out of your marketing campaign. Stephanie says, “Analysis that can be done to ensure that you and the decision makers in your company feel comfortable and confident that the investment is going to generate the return that you need, or that you understand what you as a business need to work on first before you can see that return when you enter the affiliate space.”Helen Southgate: “You get out what you put in.”Echoing her concept somewhat, Helen adds that you get out what you put in in terms of time investment and effort. But you shouldn't be above outsourcing if you need to.Helen says, “I think if you leave an affiliate program to run, it doesn't run very well. It's stagnant and so you have to keep working at it. And - I think it's a plug considering this - a few agencies on this, like getting outside advice, expert advice, which is massively beneficial to everyone I think.”Matt Frary: “This is a human relationship-based business.”It's important for CMOs to remember that affiliate marketing is all about creating relationships. Relationships between affiliate and manager, between brands, between affiliates and users, and more. Matt says, “I think we need to realize that although we want this to be zeros and ones and the industry is very data based, we need to realize really what we are in here is the relationship and people business. And part of that is reaching out, that's part of partnering, that's part of using the resources around us being willing to try things with other people. It's not folding our arms and saying that will never work. … So, we have to get out of our own ways.”Seb Bardin: “End-to-end campaigns are challenging the status quo.”Seb, on the other hand, likes to plan for the future. Seb says, “From a brand, from a performance, perspective, yes, of course we want to understand our brand metrics, but also when it comes more to performance, where is the autumn coming as part of this journey?”If you are interested in more affiliate and social media marketing insights, take a look at our blog for all the latest news and advice. Having just exited this company last July, he is now the EVP of Brand Strategy for the acquiring firm, https://digitalmediasolutions.com/ (Digital Media Solutions Group). She is the Founder and CEO of https://www.titanceo.com/ (Titan 100), and we have Matt Frary, https://digitalmediasolutions.com/ (Digital Media Solutions Group), EVP of Brand Strategy. Jaime, thanks for taking the time. Matt, I appreciate you carving out the time given the Chaos that has been happening in your life. With all that being said, Matt, if you would give us a thumbnail sketch of your business and who you serve. First off, thanks Jaime for having me in, and thank you, Bob for having us as well. We appreciate it. We built this little company a few years ago called http://www.SmarterChaos.com (SmarterChaos.com) and I'm one of the Founders and was the CEO of that company. There's a long lead up to this, but we were purchased by Digital Media Solutions. On July 15th, the same day that we were purchased by Digital Media Solutions, we went public. We have some exciting news that we sold our company, and we also got to join a company that had an IPO. It's exciting times. I have to say, I've never imagined growing this company years ago, then selling and participating in a public event on the same day. A crash course in, are you kidding me? You can't script this stuff, I swear. Maybe we'll talk about this, but when I did start the company SmarterChaos.com, I did say something to the founders about, "We should build a strong foundation so this thing could scale someday." I’m curious to know the types of clients that you worked with or you envisioned working with through SmarterChaos as you originally created that foundation to scale it and grow it. SmarterChaos was originally built so that we could help large brands navigate the chaos of the online marketing world. I started SmarterChaos on the back of a napkin, sipping a margarita down in Mexico in Puerto Vallarta. My son who was 2 or 3 at the time was playing in a little waterfall fountain. My wife said, "Are you good here?" I said, "I'm good. I have an idea." Two hours later, I had sketched out this business plan and I had realized that the online marketing world for the layperson was extremely chaotic. You have all these different places you need to log in, all these different theories you needed to employ. I looked at serving any brand that looked at the internet as a chaotic confusing place where you could lose money quickly trying to navigate that space and pumping money into Facebook, Twitter, and all the partnerships. To make a long story longer, we focused on the brands that wanted to acquire customers profitably. If it was a household brand, that was the type of brand that we wanted to go after. When we first started, I used Shark Tank as my lead list. I would watch Shark Tank and I figured if they got funded, they had money. They...

This week, SGV Connect goes macro and micro with a look at the just started public process on the county's water plan and studies why Pasadena is resisting the call to eliminate pedestrian crossing buttons before allowing people to legally cross the street at most intersections. Kris spoke with Matt Frary, Acting Principal Engieneer at Los Angeles County Public Works, about the County Water Plan. The board of supervisors decided at last week’s meeting to hire a consultant to develop the plan by 2021. This plan would try to create a regional approach to water resource management. It would be a practical, policy document, that would help to articulate a shared vision with the more than 200+ water agencies in the County. Frary said. For folks in the SGV who want to get involved with the development of the County Water Plan, or actions taken as part of the Safe Clean Water Program, there are 3 dedicated Steering Committees focused on this topic. Each committee is comprised of 17 committee members, five of which are community stakeholders and at least one watershed coordinator to help facilitate additional involvement. The three committees are as follow: Upper San Gabriel River Watershed Area Steering Committee Lower San Gabriel Watershed Area Steering Committee Rio Hondo Watershed Area Steering Committee Second, Damien speaks with Misch Anderson, an advocate for safer transportation options in Pasadena. Anderson has been vocal about the city's response to COVID-19, criticizing the city in Colorado Boulevard (not once, but twice) for not turning off the "Beg Buttons" that need pressing before one crosses the street. Damien and Misch discuss Pasadena's login in not following the example of Los Angeles and other peer cities and make the case that once the buttons are turned off, they should never be turned back on. Last, we have a programming note on the expanded SGV Connect we announced in last week's podcast. Future podcasts and articles that are written as part of our agreement with Foothill Transit will have a place to signup for the new SGV Connect Newsletter. We're going to launch the newsletter in two weeks, May 22, and we hope to have hundreds of you joining us.
