Career success takes a status boost, not a power grab. How do you chart the career course you've always imagined? According to Alison Fragale, it's about gaining influence through status, power, and ultimately, being “a likeable badass.”As a research psychologist, professor, speaker, and author, Fragale is on a mission to help women take control of their careers. In her book Likeable Badass: How Women Get the Success They Deserve, she argues that most people have it backwards when pursuing career advancement. "We have talked for a long time [about] getting more power," she explains. However, by focusing first on achieving status (how respected we are), power will often come as a natural byproduct. "If you pursue status before, or at least alongside power, everything is going to fall into place," she says. “Status makes power a lot easier to achieve, and it makes power a lot easier to use.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, hosted by executive producer Jenny Luna, Fragale explores the communication strategies of a likeable badass, from building warmth and assertiveness to authentically connecting with colleagues. Whether you're building relationships in a new company or have been leading one for years, Fragale's insights will help you command respect while communicating with kindness. To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premiumEpisode Reference Links:Alison FragaleAlison's Book: Likeable BadassJenny LunaEp.12 It's Not What You Say, It's How You Say It: How To Communicate PowerEp.15 The Art of Negotiation: How to Get More of What You Want Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:21) - Defining Power and Status (05:26) - Why Status Comes Before Power (06:19) - Communication Techniques to Build Status (09:27) - Evaluating Your Habits: Nonverbal and Verbal Cues (11:21) - Mentorship in Developing Communication (13:13) - Adapting to a New Work Culture (18:41) - Representing Difference Without Distance (19:49) - Overcoming Bad First Impressions (21:47) - The Final Three Question (25:32) - Conclusion *****This episode is brought to you by Babbel. Send us a textWhat if your most valuable asset isn't listed anywhere on your balance sheet? As businesses struggle with burnout, retention, and ever-increasing demands, well-being strategist Anita Barbero offers a compelling vision for transforming workplace cultures through mindful, strategic wellness integration.Drawing from her extensive experience with iconic brands including ESPN, Disney, and Chewy, Barbero dismantles the misconception that well-being is merely a nice-to-have perk. "It needs to be embedded into the very fabric of the organization," she explains, presenting a business case that's impossible to ignore: companies investing in mental health initiatives see up to four times return through reduced absenteeism, increased productivity, and lower healthcare costs. The magic happens when wellness isn't treated as a disconnected event but woven seamlessly into the corporate rhythm. Rather than disruptive hour-long sessions, Barbero advocates for "mindful minutes" before meetings, short guided breaks, and accessible resources that employees can engage with on their own terms. These micro-interventions, when practiced consistently, create measurable momentum. The pandemic marked a turning point, revealing what's possible when leaders show up with vulnerability and humanity. "Record numbers attended virtual well-being sessions," Barbero shares, "and executives appeared from their living rooms—not polished, but real." This crisis taught us that resilience isn't about pushing through; it's about pausing, connecting, and creating space for what's authentic.By blending science (evidence-based tools), spirit (purpose and connection), and strategy (sustainable practices), Barbero offers a holistic approach to workplace wellness that transcends trendy programs. In a workforce that's "tired, burned out, and craving something real," these practices aren't luxuries—they're necessities for organizations that want to thrive.Looking for practical strategies to transform your workplace culture? How to turn curiosity, clarity, and AI into your most powerful job search tools.Job search isn't just about landing your next role—it's about understanding who you are and how you want to show up in the world. According to Andrew Seaman, Senior Managing Editor for Jobs and Career Development at LinkedIn, that process begins with curiosity, not certainty. “People assume they need to apply to dozens of jobs with a perfect résumé,” he explains. “But the best applications are rooted in self-awareness and strategy—not spray-and-pray.”Instead of rushing to the next opportunity, Seaman encourages job seekers to slow down, ask better questions, and prioritize conversations over checklists. From informational interviews to profile updates, clarity is key—knowing what you want and telling a story that shows why you're the right fit. With tools like LinkedIn's Job Match and natural-language job search, candidates can now assess how they align with a role—and where they can grow. “It's not just about being qualified,” Seaman says. “It's about showing the value you bring.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Seaman joins host Matt Abrahams for our Catalyze Your Career miniseries to share how to job search with intention. Using Matt's “Four I's” framework—identifying, investigating, initiating contact, and interviewing—they explore how strategic storytelling, thoughtful networking, and AI tools can help you stand out in a crowded market.Episode Reference Links:Andrew SeamanEp.184 Fit or Quit? Every Friday, we bring you business owners and experts who share their top strategies for growing yourself, your team and your small business. Get ready for a dose of inspiration, one action you can implement and quotable quotes that will stick with you long after the episode ends! In this episode of Quick Fire Friday, host Rob Cameron interviews Trang Nova, a renowned speaker and speaking coach, who shares her inspiring journey from physiotherapy to empowering entrepreneurs and business owners to harness the power of effective communication. Trang discusses common challenges her clients face—including public speaking anxiety, team leadership, and building personal brands—and emphasizes that 93% of a message's impact lies in its delivery rather than just words. She outlines her approach to mindset, articulation, and vocal presence, and offers compelling case studies of clients who have achieved remarkable business growth through improved speaking skills. Trang also shares a practical tip: record and review your own speaking to uncover opportunities for impactful improvement. Key Takeaways for Small Business Owners: Your Voice Is a Business Asset: Effective communication isn't just a soft skill—it directly impacts your ability to lead, sell, and influence. Learning to use your voice with clarity and confidence can elevate your brand and business. 93% of Communication Is Non-Verbal: Trang emphasizes that how you say something—your tone, pace, body language, and energy—has a far greater impact than the words themselves. Delivery drives trust, authority, and connection. Mindset Shapes Your Message: Many entrepreneurs struggle with self-doubt and imposter syndrome. Building the confidence to be seen and heard is foundational to becoming a compelling communicator and leader. Our hero crafts outstanding reviews following the experience of listening to our special guests. Are you the one we've been waiting for? Tailor Your Speaking Style: There's no one-size-fits-all solution. Trang works with clients individually to help them refine their unique speaking style—whether that means slowing down, speaking up, or pausing more intentionally. Leadership Requires Clear Communication: Business owners who lead small teams must learn to communicate with a balance of warmth and authority. Mastering hard conversations and motivational messaging is crucial for team growth. Practice with Purpose: Trang recommends a simple but powerful exercise: record a 2-minute video of yourself speaking and review it after a day. This builds self-awareness and helps you identify key areas to improve delivery and presence. One action small business owners can take: According to Trang Nova, one action a small business owner should take is to record a 2-minute video of themselves speaking—whether introducing their business or sharing a story — and watch it the next day to identify areas for improving clarity, confidence, and delivery. Do you have 2 minutes every Friday? Sign up to the Weekly Leadership Email. It's free and we can help you to maximize your time. Enjoyed the podcast? Send us a textSolving the $10,000 Problem: Your Path from Personal Brand to Investment-Ready BusinessWhat separates thriving businesses from struggling ones? According to Grant McGaugh, CEO of Five Star BDM, it's the ability to solve high-value problems while building a multi-dimensional business strategy. In this illuminating session, Grant shares his journey from corporate IT professional to business advisor, revealing how a layoff in 2019 became the catalyst for creating a comprehensive business framework that now serves entrepreneurs worldwide. The cornerstone of Grant's approach is what he calls "the $10,000 problem" - identifying and addressing challenges that represent significant financial value to potential clients. This threshold matters because it's where prospects stop scrolling and start engaging. As Grant explains, "If what you're doing is not solving at least a $10,000 problem, most people will just keep scrolling past you." This insight forms the foundation of the BRAVE Blueprint - a methodology encompassing Brand identity, Research, Assets, Visibility, and Execution.Grant reveals how his business operates across three interconnected dimensions. Personal branding serves as the entry point, creating the know-like-trust factor essential for attracting clients. Business development transforms individual expertise into scalable frameworks, recurring revenue models, and operational efficiencies. Finally, investment banking strategies position businesses for capital raises, strategic partnerships, or eventual exits - requiring demonstrable competitive advantages, protected intellectual property, and reliable financial forecasts. For entrepreneurs feeling stuck, Grant offers a refreshing perspective on business growth: "Senior leaders typically aren't operating in the present, they're operating in the future. They're creating the future that we're going to experience." This forward-thinking approach includes developing specific milestones, building financial reserves, and sometimes considering acquisition rather than organic growth when time-to-market is critical.Ready to transform your business from personality-dependent to investment-ready? Running a freelance business successfully requires business sense, clear communication, and client understanding—more than just good design.Don't Wait—Plant Seeds Early : Ian emphasizes that most of his current success comes from relationships and efforts made years ago. Creatives should build connections before they need them, not when they're desperate for work.Systems Before Sales: Prep for What Happens After 'Yes' : Freelancers often focus on winning projects but overlook what comes next. Having onboarding systems, case studies, and pitch materials ready improves credibility and client trust.Ego Kills Collaboration : Letting go of creative ego is key. Just because it's your favorite design doesn't mean it's right for the client. The best creatives learn to listen, adapt, and prioritize results over personal preference.Be a Joy to Work With : Reliability, speed, and professionalism can set you apart more than creativity alone. Clients want someone who respects their time, delivers on promises, and makes the process smooth.Power Quotes:"Case studies—even the small ones—are gold.” - Alex Quin"You have to be able to put your ego aside and do what's best for the client.” - Ian DeloneyConnect With Ian :Instagram: (https://www.instagram.com/iandeloney/)Linkedin (https://www.linkedin.com/in/iandeloney/)Connect With the Podcast Host Alex Quin:Instagram: (https://www.instagram.com/alexquin)Twitter: (https://twitter.com/mralexquin)LinkedIn: (https://www.linkedin.com/in/mralexquin)Website: (https://alexquin.com)TikTok: (https://www.tiktok.com/@mralexquin)Our CommunityInstagram:(https://www.instagram.com/hustleinspireshustle)Twitter: (https://twitter.com/HustleInspires)LinkedIn: (https://www.linkedin.com/company/hustle-inspires-hustle)Website: (https://hustleinspireshustle.com)*This page may contain affiliate links or sponsored content. Send us a textWhat happens when compassion meets operational excellence in healthcare leadership? Alexander Fernandez's journey from frontline nursing to Corporate Director at Jackson Health System reveals the transformative power of people-centered leadership in high-pressure healthcare environments.Known affectionately as "The Mayor," Fernandez brings a rare ability to unite clinical and administrative teams while driving measurable results. His leadership philosophy—"the heart behind the hustle"—perfectly captures how he balances human connection with strategic execution. Born into a family where his grandmother modeled compassionate service and his father rose from being a Cuban orphan to becoming the first Hispanic police officer in Metro Dade and eventually a U.S. diplomat, Fernandez inherited both compassion and a powerful work ethic that defines his approach to healthcare operations. While many leaders focus exclusively on metrics, Fernandez builds cultures that sustain performance by reducing turnover and fostering loyalty across diverse teams. "I build trust and structure at the same time," he explains, ensuring operational support recognizes that people are not just numbers. This approach has proven particularly effective when leading complex initiatives spanning patient access, stroke care, workforce staffing, and system-wide technology implementations.Mentorship stands as a cornerstone of Fernandez's leadership strategy. Having benefited from the guidance of a CEO who recognized his potential early in his career, he now pays this forward by nurturing others' growth. His advice to aspiring healthcare leaders? Find a mentor and don't let fear stop you from moving forward. "Confidence comes through experience," he shares, emphasizing that stepping into challenging roles builds the expertise needed to navigate healthcare's complex landscape.Connect with Alexander on LinkedIn under Alexander A Fernandez or email at afernandez3@jhsmiami.org to learn more about his approach to transformational healthcare leadership. Thanks for tuning in to this episode of Follow The Brand!
