The second event from this week in history according to the movies comes from the 1993 film called Geronimo: An American Legend, because Wednesday this week marks the 138th anniversary of that event. For our third event, we'll learn about one of Jesse James' infamous holdups from September 7th, 1876 as it's shown in the movie The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid. Brown was born on 3 November 1958 in Northfield Minnesota, he weighed only 2 pounds 12 ounces. He was the youngest of five children born to Claude Brown and Marie Mulcahy-Brown. Claude was a farmer and his mother helped him but also added to the family's income by working part time as a dental hygienist. The farm was located near Dundas (between Northfield and Faribault). Brown grew up as a typical farm kid helping around the farm, doing chores and fieldwork. He enjoyed participation in the FFA and 4H. He had three older brothers, Claude Patrick (Pat), Dennis and Thomas, he also had one sister Kathleen. He graduated from high school in Northfield in 1977 and 2 then went to the University of Minnesota graduating in 1981 with a baccalaureate degree in Agricultural Business and Economics. He then worked for the Federal Land Bank until 1982. While Brown was likely to be successful in Agra-business, after much thought, he felt the need to help people by going into dentistry. He was inspired to be a dentist by his mother who graduated from the University of Minnesota Dental Hygienist School in 1940. Another inspiration came from Brown's maternal grandfather Edward P. Mulcahy who had been a flight instructor during World War One. Mulcahy was severely injured in an airplane crash and he was medically discharged for his injuries. Kristen One of the big reasons that I've stayed here is Minnesota as a whole, but also, very specifically, Northfield is super affordable. Plus, I love being outside. I love the amount of outdoor parks here. We do a ton of hiking. We have kayaks, and I do cross country skiing and snowboarding. And it's just really wonderful. Kristen I always thought that it would be really amazing to live and work in New York City and be a young working woman. And I quickly found that it just wasn't exactly right for me. And although I like working in that exciting energy, I really need to get out of it when I'm done with work. And I really need to be in some quiet and some nature on the weekends and evenings. So the balance wasn't quite right for me in New York. So I love how easy it is to be in the Twin Cities, have access to amazing culture, restaurants, museums. And then you can so easily get outside of that and be in nature. Kristen I love to travel. I love to be outside and be active, and it's what I do naturally. So I started this blog, ExpeditionKristen.com, to just really share my love for Minnesota. It's heavily focused on outdoor things that you can do in Minnesota. … So it's a way for me to share my love of Minnesota and to help other people find some of the hidden gems that this, I think, very underrated state has to offer. Kristen I love that Minnesotans just like completely embrace winter, and that's how you get through it. People go ice fishing, and hunting and cross country skiing is really popular. And they'll have tons of different festivals on the frozen lakes. Ice hockey, golf events on frozen lakes, kite festivals. … So it's like, if you just have the right clothing and the right attitude, it's fine. Kristen For such a small little town, there's actually a lot of options for coffee and bakeries and all that kind of stuff. My first choice, though, is this place called Tandem Bagels. And the reason is because of their bagels. So I do have to admit, being a New Yorker, I am a little bit of a bagel snob. And tandem bagels is amazing. Easily they have the best bagels anywhere in Minnesota that I have come across. So I'm an everything bagel kind of girl, and it's like, they do it right. Kristen I keep using the word quaint, but that's exactly what it is. It's an adorable little town on the river with two beautiful colleges. In the summertime, there's farmer's markets. Which, I love going to those. They have live music and a lot of local vendors selling baked goods and crafts and homemade woodwork, and all kinds of really cool things. There's so many wonderful family-owned farms around town where you can pick blueberries or strawberries or pumpkins and apples. And there's a great yoga studio and a couple of breweries. I'm also a knitter, and there's a family-owned yarn store in town and an independent bookstore. There's just so much personality, and on top of all of it, you know, it's only 45 minutes away from Minneapolis, and it's super affordable. And they actually have excellent public schools. So it just is this all-around wonderful place, and it really, it really has it all! In this Escape Velocity Series Podcast and Video on Small Scale Life, I have the honor of interviewing Kris Geissler. Kris saw a need to provide driver’s education in her community, and she started the Northfield Area School of Driving to help teach students how to drive safely. Who is Kris Geissler? Kris is a single mom and has a background in special education. She went from the St. Peter Security Hospital to teaching. She wanted to help students who were struggling in school in an effort to prevent them from going down a dark path. Kris has a passion to help these students succeed in school and life. Northfield is a community south of the Twin Cities and home to St. Olaf College, Carleton Collage and Malt-O-Meal. It is far enough from the Twin Cities that it is beautiful bedroom community with small town charm, but it is big enough that there are needs for students and people that go unfulfilled. One of those needs was driver’s education. There were no driver’s education classes available to local students. Kris saw that need and started her school to address that need in the Northfield area, especially when Community Education said "no." Do You See a Need? Do you see a need for a product or service? I got to know Andrea Mazzariello fairly soon after I moved to Northfield Minnesota. I saw him perform his one-man performance project at a local theater, and hung around after to talk. Things led to other things, and we started talking about Max, playing drone bits in his basement and more. This podcast was prodded into action by a release party for his new album, which dropped at the end of February. In our discussion, he talks about that decision, how he translates this back to working a live/solo show, and how it helps him cope with the stresses of creating his work. But we talk about a lot of other stuff as well. I mean, who remembers the old Brother MIDI Sequencer? Well, Andrea does, because that was his starting point for electronic music. Who is willing to talk about the affordances - both positive and negative - of modern software? Andrew is. On December 7th, 1876, 8 strangers rode into the town of Northfield Minnesota. Shortly before noon they stopped at a local restaurant and dined on fried eggs. Residents of Northfield would later testify that the men smelled of alcohol and were clearly under the influence. After eating, the men left the diner, crossed a bridge, and headed towards the First National Bank of Northfield. They fanned out. Three of men entered the bank, two stood guard directly outside the door, and the other three took up positions in the nearby square, preparing to guard the gang’s escape route. This wasn’t some amateur job or some green horn gang of wanna be’s. No, this was the infamous James-Younger gang, and they had been robbing and stealing and killing for years. They had perfected the art of robbing not only banks, but trains and stagecoaches as well. But on this fateful day they picked the wrong bank in the wrong  town. The citizens of Northfield weren’t in the mood to have their bank robbed that day. Soon a suspicious  Northfield resident cried out “Get your guns, boys, they’re robbing the bank” Before the James-Younger crew knew it, they were being riddled with bullets, having to escape town in a hail of gunfire that resulted in the death of two of them and the wounding of all the others. They were  shot all to hell. This kicked off a desperate manhunt and ultimately marked the end of the James-Younger gang. Who were the James and Younger brothers? About Paul Johnson: Paul Johnson earned his Bachelor of Music degree in 1980 from St. Olaf College in Northfield Minnesota before earning his Master of Music degree in 1986 at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University. A “Liberace Foundation Scholar” during his graduate years of study, Mr. Johnson is currently a faculty member and chair of strings at the Peabody Conservatory. Other institutions of attended include the United States Air Force Academy, University of Wisconsin, and the University of Minnesota. Previous positions include faculty appointments at Towson State University, Goucher College, and Baltimore School for the Arts. In 1999, Mr. Johnson was the recipient of The Johns Hopkins Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award. He is currently the acting chair of the Peabody Institute String Department. Mr. Johnson's playing positions have included principal bassist for the Baltimore Opera Company, Concert Artists of Baltimore, Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, and the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. His major teachers include Eugene Levinson and Harold Robinson. Mr. Johnson currently plays as a freelance musician the Baltimore, Washington DC, and Philadelphia, as well as being an active clinician and adjudicator on the East Coast.
