Welcome to this conversation with two people who really inspire me, Andi Ashworth and Charlie Peacock. They provide ample hope from further down the road - having accumulated decades of wisdom in the public square as Nashville music producing influencers. Dare I say - few people have influenced our generation through music more powerfully than they have. I read their book, meaningfully titled “Why everything that doesn't matter, matters so much” and then awaited this conversation with giddiness, anticipation, excitement, a little bit of shyness. Maybe I was – and still am? – a little starstruck? I will let you decide. Have you ever asked, what can I do to mend the world, to mend my family or my own life? And if I could, is it worth it? Should I bother? Does my own small part in the world really matter? And so today, multi-Grammy-winner Charlie Peacock and his wife, delightful author Andy Ashworth, come to share their encouragement. Their book is a collection of 16 essays or letters. They are here to share their wisdom, calling us to discover and to join God's mission to love and care for a very hurting world. They are sharing with honesty, vulnerability, humility and wisdom from their own life experiences. They are beloved and trusted mentors. They invite us into a thought-provoking exploration of the many facets of the Christian culture care and culture-making in all areas - from the kitchen, hospitality, generosity, gardening all the way to Carnegie Hall and Grammy Awards. They talk to us about the theology of imagination and creativity, a vocation that provides a framework for all of life. I've found them providing a model for expressing love in marriage, in friendship, in citizenship, and every kind of work, even in the midst of our culture of cynicism, fear, exhaustion, oppression. I have found that each one of these 16 letters is a gentle, wise, humble, vulnerable, and thought-provoking nudge in the direction of God's powerfully ordinary purpose for each one of us. It doesn't matter what the future holds because we're invited to participate fully in the beautiful redemptive work of Christ. Can you begin to see why I can't wait to share this conversation with you? I hope you join us. Today we dive back into a discussion of the Culper Spy Ring, turning our attention to the area of Port Jefferson or, more appropriately, it's original incarnation of Drowned Meadow. The village of Port Jefferson is opening the Drowned Meadow Cottage Museum inside the 18th century home of Culper ring member Phillips Roe. Mark Sternberg, the museum's Culper Spy Ring Historian, walks us through the focus of the museum, the background of Roe, and the deeper context of the Culper Spy ring in the Setauket area. For instance, Mark's recent article in New York State Archives magazine lays out documentary evidence on the activities of Selah Strong in regards to the Revolution and spying. You'll also hear about Mount Misery, Old Man's, petticoats, and the late, lamented AMC series Turn: Washington's Spies. Extreme Genes - America's Family History and Genealogy Radio Show & Podcast
Fisher opens this Classic Rewind from 2016 with Family Histoire News talking about the upcoming season of Genealogy Roadshow. He discloses which cities the Roadshow team will visit this year. He then talks about the amazing discovery of the remains of a Roman villa underneath a barn in England. Here how it was discovered and what is happening to the site now. Fisher then shares the sad tale of the 1838 sale of over 230 African slaves by Jesuit priests in Washington DC. Here why they were sold, and which well known university exists today because its debts were paid by the sale. Also hear about why major efforts are being made to find their descendants. In segment two, Fisher visits with actor Sam Roukin who plays Captain John Graves Simcoe in the AMC series “TURN: Washington's Spies.” Sam talks about his development of this despicable character, based on a real historic figure. Sam also talks about his immersion in the history of the Revolution. In segment three, Fisher continues his conversation with Sam Roukin. Sam talks about what responsibility he feels to the real man and how he squares the character he portrays with the man who did some very good things after the Revolution. Sam also reveals that, despite being very British and portraying a brutal British officer in the Revolution, he is likely to do something in the not so distant future that will please many Americans. We feel like we have finally cracked the code on how to mix in spy television series with our spy movie discussions. It's kind of rare to find spy drama that focuses on pre-WWII tradecraft, but TURN delivers big time. This AMC Original show dramatizes the historical efforts of the Culper Ring in the effort to create a new nation. This is Part One of a Three Episode series on Season One of TURN: Washington's Spies. Here we will discuss the pilot episode. Next week we will discuss episode 6. The final week we will close the discussion with details (including spoilers) of the final episode 10. Alex Collins recently joined host Elias in the cave! Alex was recently seen on CW's 'Stargirl as Dr. Mid-Nite. Collins was excited at the opportunity to take over the Dr. Mid-Nite role, adding “Working on this show has been a career highlight. Geoff Johns has created a warm and familial environment on set and stepping into a role played originally by such an experienced actor as Henry Thomas could have been intimidating and nerve-wracking were it not for being welcomed by Johns and the entire cast and crew. Brec Bassinger went out of her way to make me feel as if I'd been there since day one, and working with Anjelika Washington was such a treat. And who doesn't want to play a legendary superhero, don the tights, super suit, and cape? Now, where's my owl?” While the CW's Stargirl is Collins' most recent role, he's no stranger to the small screen. Audiences have seen his often rugged and brooding characters on HBO's Lovecraft Country and True Detective, FOX's The Gifted, and AMC's Turn: Washington's Spies. Besides his many television stints, Collins has also appeared in several major studio feature films. Among the titles are the Warner Bros thriller The Accountant, directed by Gavin O'Connor and starring Ben Affleck, Clint Eastwood's dramatic bombing biopic Richard Jewell, and Rob Reiner's Iraq War historical drama Shock & Awe, starring Woody Harrelson and James Marsden. In episode two we continue to examine the American Revolution, but we look at two series that focus less on the famous Founding Fathers and, instead, highlight the experiences of "ordinary people" people forced to negotiate fast-moving and complex events. They are Turn: Washington's Spies and The Book of Negroes . We really want to emphasize how Turn and The Book of Negroes bring the stories of ordinary people to life, but in very different ways. When the Founding Fathers do make the occasional appearance on screen it works to reveal the contributions of those who are the invisible movers of events - farmers turned spies, for example, or enslaved people caught in the middle of a dispute that, if anything, could only worsen their plight. Episode 27 of The Blank Canvas Podcast with Kate Dennis. With today being International Women’s Day, it’s a most appropriate day to release my conversation with the uber talented screen director, Kate Dennis. Starting out as a camera assistant, then focus puller and script supervisor for many years, Kate’s credits include the massive hits films Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Cliffhanger and Babe. In 1996 Kate was offered to direct an episode of the TV series Twisted Tales for producer Bryan Brown, she hasn’t looked back and is now one of the most sought after international screen directors. Kate has set-up seven TV dramas in the US, UK and Australia including HBO’s Run (working with Phoebe Waller-Bridge), Tommy (with Edie Falco), New Amsterdam (which is going strong after 5 seasons); Secrets & Lies (which starred Juliette Lewis & Ryan Phillippe in it’s USA remake) and Australian TV phenomena Offspring, which ran for seven seasons. Kate’s episodic work in the US traverses broad genres from comedy to drama and includes: GLOW, The Tick, Heathers, Strange Angel, Krypton, Damnation, The Mindy Project, Preacher, Turn: Washington’s Spies, Fear of The Walking Dead, Sleepy Hollow and Suits. Her Australian directing work includes: Rake, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Rush, The Time of Our Lives, The Secret Life of Us and Love My Way. In 2017, Kate’s episode ‘The Bridge’ from The Handmaid’s Tale, was nominated for an Emmy award for Outstanding Director for a Drama Series. Kate remains a down-to-earth Aussie and makes it her job sound rather simple, however it’s taken decades of hard work in the high pressure hot-seat of directing big-budget series to earn her place at the top. Brave New Women hosted by Cecilia Poullain Kate Dennis, TV and film director was nominated in 2017 for an Emmy® for Outstanding Director for a Drama Series for her episode of the Handmaid's Tale, ‘The Bridge' . She talks about why filming The Bridge was so hard to pull off and why it was so special. She talks about how she became a director. She talks about the nitty-gritty of being a director and her current film projects which are adaptations of "Almost French" by Sarah Turnbull and "All That I Am" by Anna Funder. We talk about her interest in telling stories about human tolerance and the human condition through a more intimate lens. We deep-dive into what it means to listen and how time stops us from understanding others as much as we would like. She talks about being a woman in the film industry when she first started and it was very male-dominated and now, when being a woman is an advantage.Kate Dennis has set up seven television dramas in the US, UK and Australia including Offspring which ran for seven seasons, garnering over 40 awards and nominations. Her episodic work in the US traverses comedy and drama and includes: The Handmaid's Tale; GLOW; The Tick; Heathers; Strange Angel; Krypton; Damnation; I'm Dying Up Here; The Mindy Project; Preacher; Turn: Washington's Spies; Fear The Walking Dead; Sleepy Hollow and Suits. She began her career as a camera assistant and later script supervisor on Priscilla Queen of the Desert; Babe; At Play in the Fields of the Lord and Cliffhanger. Her Australian directing work includes Rake; Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries; The Time of Our Lives; Rush; The Secret Life of Us; and Love My Way.
