Danny Royer is the Farm Coordinator at UC Merced. From smart farms to reimagining supply chains, we'll hear how Danny blends innovation with the art of growing food. He and Monte explore farming that looks at scaling back costs with sustainable practices as well as inspiring the next generation through real-world experience. Instagram: @esf_ucm https://www.instagram.com/esf_ucm?igsh=aml5Z3pmZmlyMXJ1 Danny was born and raised in Merced, California. Merced is located in the heart of California's Central Valley and is surrounded by production agriculture. Not having family ties to agriculture though, Danny found his passion for farming and agriculture through 4-H, FFA and on his best friend's farm just outside of Merced. He started his career in farming by irrigating pistachios in Madera at age 16 and eventually found himself working summers on a construction crew for Merced Irrigation District. After high school Danny took his passion for Agriculture to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. While he was there he continued to focus on broadening his work experience by taking on jobs at the Cal Poly Foundation Dairy and the Cal Poly Farm Shop. Danny Graduated from Cal Poly in 2008 with a degree in Agricultural Systems Management and minor in Agricultural Business. Cal Poly had prepared him for life after graduation, but Danny attributes his summer internships and combined work experiences to preparing him for the grind that would become the next eight years of his career. After graduating Danny worked in management and leadership positions for some of the largest farms and food production companies in California. After years of operational roles Danny transitioned into a new role as the VP of Technology for world renowned Bowles Farming Company. It was ag tech that allowed Danny to start driving change in operations and redefining company cultures. Danny's vast and extensive agriculture operations experience combined with the onslaught of ag tech allowed him to shift his strategy to incorporate ag tech solutions. After years of implementations and improvement iterations though, Danny was ready for something more. Along with being a serial agriculturalist and technologist, Danny is an active member in his Community of Merced. He serves as the Chairman of the Board for the Community Foundation of Merced County and actively engages in community events and initiatives. Lastly and definitely most importantly to Danny, he is very much a family man. Danny is married with three children, who are the light of his life and his mission to create sustainable food systems is driven by a desire to see a more balanced and sustainable world for his family. Guests: Dairy Challenge Organizers, Producers, Coaches & Student WinnersThe North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge Contest is a two day event that brings together students from around the world to gain real life, hands-on experience and learn from industry experts. Gathering together to discuss the 21st Annual Dairy Challenge are organizers, Amy tePlate-Church, Dr. Mike Van Amburgh, Kristi Fiedler and Barry Putnam. Fielder, Dairy Sales Manager for Cargill and Board Chair for the Dairy Challenge Committee began the conversation, explaining the value of Dairy Challenge as a networking opportunity for the next generation. (3:29)Each team has four students and this year there were 31 competing teams. In addition, 142 students participated in the 10th Anniversary of the Academy, an intensive training program in conjunction with the Dairy Challenge contest. The Dairy Challenge is all about the next generation, Church mentioned. She said she believes it's one place where students get the chance to meet many dairy leaders from various sectors, while growing and developing their skills at the same time. (3:58)Host producers also joined in for the National Dairy Challenge Conversation, including Maxwell Chittenden from Dutch Hallow, Liam Hanahan from Turning Point Dairy and Kyle Getty from Ideal Dairy. As host farms, Hanehan shared that each producer opens up their operations for two hours during Dairy Challenge for students to take tours and analyze their facilities, cows and even records. He went on to say that bringing a fresh set of eyes is a bit scary, but the students think big picture and usually are able to point out great strengths and weaknesses. (12:13)Not only do the students learn, but so do the producers. Getty said oftentimes students point out things they've missed or even offer feedback that turns into a simple fix. (16:50)Stuart and Jessica Ziehm with Tiashake Farm were the 2023 Dairy Challenge Academy Host Dairy Producers. Sharing a few stories from the Academy, Jessica said they recently renovated a 200 year old barn into a farm store as an opportunity to not only sell their beef and pork products, but also other local products. She mentioned having students visit was a great opportunity that they hope to continue into the future. (25:09)Also joining around the pub are National Dairy Challenge coaches Dr. Shaun Wellert, Dr. Joe Domecq and Dr. Lauren Mayo. Selecting just four students for each team is not an easy task, but Dr. Domecq said the process is simple as students develop new skills fairly quickly. As coaches, they figure out who works best together and their individual strengths. 33:29Dr. Wellert shifted the conversation briefly, sharing a few changes he's seen over the last decade. He mentioned that ten years ago each student was from an agricultural background, but now trends show only one student out of seven is from a dairy or has any industry background. (35:61)Closing the conversation, Dr. Jeff Elliot, podcast co-host and technical service specialist for Balchem mentioned the 2023 four first place teams, students and their individual studies of interest. Placing first at the Dairy Challenge was four students from the University of Guelph including Madeline McClennan (Animal Biology), Allison Visser (Honors Agriculture), Carine Bateman (Food and Agricultural Business) and Johnathan Koot (Animal Science). In addition, Emily Ockerman (Animal Science), Kevin Jess (Ag Science and Animal Science), Blake Wadsworth (Animal Science) and Caroline Lafferty (Agricultural Business) all students at Cornell University placed second. The University of Wisconsin River Falls team also won and included Alison Wagner (Dairy Science), Grace Haase (Agricultural Business), Ben Stone (Chemistry) and Haley Kirchoff (Agribusiness). Lastly, was Purdue University. Team members included Lane Bollenbach (Animal Science), Chad Patterson (Agriculture Systems Management), Tobyn Smith (Animal Science), Miriam Cook (Agriculture Economics). Welcome back to the second season of She's Wild, the Podcast for Women in Land & Development. Today's guest is Rebecca Frantz is a licensed real estate salesperson with Hertz Farm Management in Iowa. Rebecca has been serving clients in the land industry for three years but has been a licensed salesperson for four years. She is a graduate of Iowa State University where she earned a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Business.Rebecca was raised on her family's century farm in southeast Iowa. Her diligent work ethic and life experiences led her to Hertz Farm Management where she works with land and farm owners helping them market and sell their land. She has dedicated time to serve those around her on a local and national level through her involvement in multiple organizations including the Realtors Land Institute (RLI), Johnson County Planning & Zoning Commissioner, Ag/Business Group of Johnson County, Mid-Prairie Alumni & Friends Board, Iowa Corn Tri-County Group, and more.In this episode, you'll get to know Rebecca as we discuss her love selling farmland. Her energy is infectious and it's easy to see why her clients love her and her enthusiasm for the agriculture industry. Memorable Moments:9:52 My favorite deal so far was helping my mom buy a farm. It was such a cool deal to get to work with family and see us gain land that was adjoining ours. We sold farms in the process, we bought farms in the process, we did a 1031 exchange in the middle of it. There was a lot of learning and there was also a lot of joy in building our operations.14:50 I applied three times to serve on the Johnson County Planning and Zoning Commission. As someone that comes from a farm and someone who wants to educate people on agriculture, I wanted that to be taken into account with planning and zoning. I was adamant and kept applying every time a position opened. I wanted to increase my knowledge of planning and zoning and comprehend it better for my buyers and sellers. 25:02 Land values have gone up nearly 30 to 40% since 2021. It is crazy how much they skyrocketed in such a quick amount of time. 26:10 If it's high-quality ground, you're still going to see high prices. There's still substantial amounts of cash out there in our sector of agriculture. People see land as a great hedge against inflation. Sound Agriculture: https://www.sound.ag/Farmers Risk: https://farmersrisk.ag/ Today's episode features Dakota Hoben, co-founder and CEO of Farmers Risk. This is an interesting look at a new startup that is taking on a complicated topic: grain marketing. As many of you know, buying and selling grain is where I started my career, so I'm always curious about companies in this space, but frankly, always a little skeptical as well. Just knowing how many variables are at play in these decisions, not least of which being the farmer's emotions. But that said, I am impressed by Dakota, and the approach they are taking, and I think he makes some really strong points in this interview. Dakota knew from a young age that the only industry he was truly passionate about was agriculture. Growing up on a grain and livestock farm in Southeast Iowa before heading to Iowa State to study Agricultural Business and International Agriculture, he watched family, neighbors, and other farmers ride the marketing roller coaster, but didn't know he would become an integral part of the solution to this problem. Before Farmers Risk, Dakota and co-founder Eric Barnard were co-workers at Granular.
On last week's Tuesday episode I started talking about how my original business, Idaho Gopher Control, has now had three sets of owners. It got me thinking about the all of the unintended, positive ripple effects of starting my very first business. It also made me realize how close I came to chickening out on starting my own business, and what would not have happened if I gave into fear. On today's episode, I'd like to discuss those things with you. More Places You Can Listen to Off-Farm Income And Matt Brechwald:

Tomorrow I am profiling a young lady that has dove into the feed business in a huge way. As a great lead in to that interview, I chose to replay this powerful interview with Sandy Hansen-Wolff about the challenges she faced and the things she overcame in establishing her own feed and see business. The original show notes can be found below. SHOW NOTES KEY IDEAS: Our guest today was thrust into the world of agribusiness in a situation that she would have never chosen. However 16 years after this happened she finds herself running a successful feed and seed business, feeling innovative as an entrepreneur and realizes that although she never realized it, she had entrepreneurial tendencies even as a child. Sandy Hansen-Wolff is the owner of AgVenture Feed & Seed. She found herself with this business at the age of 30 after her husband passed away. Sandy did not know a lot about the business when this happened and found herself with the responsibility for making it solvent before selling it could even be considered. However the sale never came as she discovered that running this business was rewarding and fulfilling. Today, Sandy has the business and she is a sought after speaker, coach and entrepreneur. She gets to spread her message of entrepreneurship all over the country and has a very inspirational story to tell. We were lucky enough to have her tell her story on this episode. ADVICE FROM SANDY: MENTORS: Sandy says "go get some mentors" and start learning from other people who have been where you want to go. LOVE: Love of your passion is not enough. Working in your business is fun for every entrepreneur. You need to learn to love working on your business, such as doing the book work, budgets, etc. NEGOTIATE: Do not be afraid to negotiate well and get the price that your products or services are worth. BEST BUSINESS ADVICE SANDY HAS EVER RECEIVED: LISTEN: Listen to others. Do not just dismiss someone as a critic because they are saying something critical about your business. Maybe they know something and you should make a change. PERSONAL HABIT: FITNESS: Sandy wasn't always fit, but she is now. She exercises, watches what she eats and meditates (kind of) every day. She knows that if she does not feel good physically and feel good about herself, she will not be able to lead, innovate and inspire. Shortly after he was born, his family relocated to Pueblo, Colorado, where he spent his young years. In 1992 his family moved to Colorado Springs, where he would finish school and witness firsthand what population growth does to real estate. He began a small real estate sales business with a local real estate broker. After two years of being in real estate sales full time and working a second full-time job, he decided it was time to go all-in with a real estate career. Since May of 2007, Casey has been involved in over 400 real estate transactions ranging from selling a home for $4,000 to farms and commercial properties in the stretch into the millions.Connect with Casey Website: 3000 CapitalPodcast: CashFlow Pro To Connect With UsPlease visit our website: www.bonavestcapital.com and please click here, to leave a rating and review!SponsorsGrow Your Show, LLCThinking About Creating and Growing Your Own Podcast But Not Sure Where To Start?Visit GrowYourShow.com and Schedule a call with Adam A.
