Democratic state Assemblymember Christy Smith lost to California GOP darling Mike Garcia this week in a special election over Katie Hill's vacated #CA25 congressional seat.   This wasn't your everyday special election (and not just because of the story behind Hill deciding to step down). Santa Clarita residents had to cast their votes in the midst of an unprecedented global pandemic. Paul Mitchell of Political Data, Inc. broke down what we can take away from the race this week on Twitter (hint: not much), but it does leave some big questions for November, when the two will be going at it for the seat once more.   Hill won this seat in 2018 by nine points against Republican incumbent Stephen Knight on a progressive platform that included Medicare for All. Smith, on the other hand, went the moderate tack in 2020 -- going for the 'centrist' voters, and not supporting M4A. (We did an episode back in December on her abysmal housing rights record at the state Capitol.) Can Smith win in November? It's possible. Bit it might behoove her to run on winning issues that actually excite voters in the district -- such as Medicare for All.   Here in Sacramento, restaurants are now looking at reopening with expanded outdoor seating options. We take a look at what this will mean for our homeless community, which has been, by and large, left behind by Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Darrell Steinberg.   We also discuss how the office/retail space industry is going to plummet in the coming months. Twitter, for instance, is going to let employees work from home 'forever.' With remote employment looking to be the new normal, we revisit the idea of fashioning these vacant spaces into affordable/mixed-use housing. Ep. 4.25.20: Adding Insult to Injury; Watching corporate coronavirus-themed ads is like watching a Trump press briefing

THE HOME FOR PROGRESSIVE POLITICS This Week’s Discussion:   Adding insult to injury, corporations start running coronavirus-themed ads. Hearing bullshit from selfish, greedy entities with no concern for the welfare of anyone but themselves and who, in many cases, are responsible for exacerbating the crisis, is...well, kind of like listening to a Republican politician. But seriously, having to listen to VW commiserate with us on our breathing problems is not just Orwellian, it is so perfectly in the moment! We commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day. We really can't say "celebrate" as November may just about end any lingering possibility we might be able to celebrate a 100th. But we are so excited to be able to report on some good news: despite their latest voter suppression efforts, including essentially threatening would-be voters with death, Trump gets his ass handed to him in Wisconsin. What does that mean for November? It means the GOP will redouble its efforts to cheat to steal the election. In more bad news for the criminal-in-chief, a Republican-led Senate committee unanimously finds no factual basis for his war on the intelligence community's investigations of his misconduct. What does that mean for November? It means the GOP will redouble its war on reality. You didn't expect a sane response, did you? The non-brain-dead need to be prepared for what's coming. Finally, Trump's latest efforts to profit off of the coronavirus, no matter who gets caught in the crossfire. But that will require a scapegoat, which is where the W.H.O. and immigrants come in. Why not pick a fight with the people trying to save us during a pandemic and the people feeding us during it? Trump supporters, including Republican Governors, are so brain-dead stupid and such human disgraces that they will happily let themselves be used as mindless tools by the usual puppet-masters in order to fight for their right to infect themselves and others. And these are the people we are going to come together with as a nation as we fight this mutual battle? Keep dreaming.         *Also available on Spotify, iTunes, and Stitcher-Please SUBSCRIBE   THE HOME FOR PROGRESSIVE POLITICS Forward Nation Radio with Professor David Leventhal    If you love what you heard, Like Us and share on Facebook - Instagram - Twitter

The ghosts keep comin’ and they don’t stop comin’ in the second Halloween special from your favourite amateur paranormal investigators. Turn on your head-mounted GoPro, loosen the top of your flashlight and get ready to record some EVPs, because it’s time to go ghostbusting, Aussie style. Who cares that it’s November? It’s always Halloween in our hearts!EPISODE NOTES:Happy Spook-vember!Australia is somewhat fascinated by ghost stories, and we could get philosophical and discuss how it’s a way for us to come to terms with our painful history of abuse, torment, and genocide – but in reality, Aussies just love a good yarn. This evening, as a congregation, we gathered to remember the fallen. Those brave young soldiers who sacrificed their lives, selflessly and voluntarily, to give us the freedoms we have today. Our minister, Rev. David McLaughlin, lead the act of remembrance, a retired naval officer laid the wreath on behalf of those present, and the haunting sound of the Last Post filled our minds with the bravery, and brevity of life. Laurence Binyon’s For the Fallen was recited and a minute’s silence observed before the Rouse played out, reminding those assembled, not just of the aftermath of the First World War, but the coming Judgement Day and the sure and certain hope that there will be a day when the living and the dead arise together. Date: Sun PM 26th June 2016 Preacher: Rev. David McLaughlin Bible Reference: Job 41v8 Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more. Merry Christmas and Happy Thanksgiving from your RV Navigators. Oh, yes we are on the road again but not in the RV. After a cold couple of weeks in Northern Europe to begin the trip, we have made our way to Rome and points south as we head eventually for Ft Lauderdale and home in mid-December. We landed in Munich just after the last podcast to visit our friend Hartmut and his family. This was a return visit after many years away and a heart-felt reunion. Then via the very fast autobahn, we drove to Vienna (about 5 hrs) for a few day. Then on to Rome where we were to pick up the first leg of our cruise. Rome in November?? It's on the same latitude as Chicago. However the weather was very cooperative with temps in the mid 60s and sunny everyday. This weather has held for the entire month of November so we have been very pleased with our decision to travel at this time of year. This months podcast was made while on our cabin balcony during a sea day. It was an ideal day at sea, smooth seas and warm temps. We have lots of RVing new as this topic is never far from our minds. We actually found another RVing couple from AZ with which to share experiences. They had just downsized from a 38ft Class A to a new B+ motorhome. Would you make this switch? The saga of the new tires for the motorhome has finally ended with a new set of 6 MIchelins. How are the tires on your RV? How old are they? Ours only had 40,000 miles but needed to be replaced. Too much sun and time had caused deterioration Christmas is on our minds so we have some suggestions for RV oriented gifts. Can you add to our list? Send us an email for some belated suggestions. We have the usually funny RV segments as well as other RV industry news so give this episode a listen and then send us some feed back. We appreciate your comments and suggestions both by email (navigator@rvnavigator.com) and on our listener comment phone line, 815/230-0772. Also send us your rig photos for inclusion on the "rig photos" page. There are many new rigs represented so send yours in now.
