From a global perspective, there are four main models of health care, each of which takes a different approach both legislatively and in practical terms of how it affects a populace's ability to obtain health care coverage and services. In 1929, Blue Cross established the first employer-sponsored health coverage in Dallas as a partnership between the Baylor University hospital and its patients. One of the largest health care acts in American history, commonly referred to as the Medicare and Medicaid Act, was approved by President Lyndon B. Johnson in July 1965. After intense debate, lawmakers passed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) or Obamacare, which was signed into law on Mar. 23, 2010.
Flexible Spending and Heath Care Savings Accounts are both ways to pay for your medical expenses with pre-tax money. Anytime you can use pretax money to pay for anything, you are getting generally getting a 22% discount or more depending on your tax bracket. Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) are benefits that may be provided by your Employer. Not all Employers will provide this benefit and with some employers, you may pay a fee to have this benefit. Money is taking out of your paycheck throughout the year which can be used to directly pay for or reimburse qualified medical expenses. The money is use it or lose it so you want to consider your healthcare expenses carefully before decided how much money to set aside in these accounts. Healthcare Savings Accounts (HSA) are available to anyone with a qualified High Deductible Healthcare Insurance Plan. This is not a benefit from your employer, but will often be set up with your employer if you are using a healthcare insurance plan they offer you as a benefit. You contribute pretax money into the account where you can invest it to grow tax free. If you use that money anytime in the future for qualified healthcare expenses, it comes out tax free as well. You can reimburse yourself for qualified medical expenses years after you incurred the expense, as long as the expense was incurred after the account was created. There is no other tax advantaged account where money goes in pre-tax, grows tax free, and can be withdrawn without paying taxes as well. Tune in to this week's podcast to learn more about the details of these two types of accounts. Please subscribe and leave a review on your favorite Podcasting platform. In this episode, Jake discusses the current state of the healthcare system in the U.S., addressing misconceptions about healthcare companies, profit margins, and the inefficiencies caused by government regulations. He proposes 11 non-murderous solutions to improve the system, emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility, competition, and the need for a more rational approach to healthcare spending. The discussion highlights the flaws in the current system and advocates for a shift towards healthcare savings accounts and other market-driven solutions. takeaways Murdering people is not a solution to healthcare issues. Health insurance companies are often wrongly blamed for high costs. The U.S. healthcare system is heavily regulated and not a free market. Competition in healthcare can drive down costs and improve quality. Healthcare savings accounts (HSAs) could revolutionize personal healthcare spending. Government mandates often complicate healthcare delivery. Incentives should align with personal responsibility in healthcare. The current system incentivizes poor lifestyle choices without consequences. Allowing competition for drugs from overseas can lower costs. An end-of-life plan can significantly reduce healthcare spending.

In this segment, Dr. Mistry answers a listener's questions about men's health education and his ongoing struggle with elevated PSA levels. Unfortunately, many urology patients dismiss the seriousness of prostate cancer and avoid diagnostic testing that may reveal its presence. Others undergo test after test to determine the precise nature of their cancer and pursue aggressive, often unnecessary treatments. Dr. Mistry reminds listeners that more than 40,000 people die every year from prostate cancer–a sobering statistic that underscores the adage, “Knowledge is power.” Tune in to learn what your body's “check engine” lights (like an elevated PSA) may be telling you about your health and when it's time to visit the “body shop.” At NAU Urology Specialists, our holistic approach emphasizes routine maintenance and preventative care that can lengthen your health span (the number of years you remain relatively free of disease and/or health complications that impact your well-being) and even your life span (the number of years you live). Smart credentials help hospitals, clinics, and clinicians With rapid advances in medical care techniques, technologies, and standards, keeping on top of the credentials, training and history of the professional care team, and health care professionals maintaining a standardized, organized portfolio of their own backgrounds, can be a challenge. In this podcast, Paul Bergeron, MD, MBA, the Chief Physician Executive at DoorSpace gives us a look at a company tackling these issues. The factors in motion include a clinician's educational background, documentation of ongoing education and training, licensing, and other recorded issues and events that may come up. A hospital or a private practice needs to know where their team is on all these thing, and individual practitioners need to know if they are current. This smart credentials system has many benefits. Recruiters in the medical field will especially benefit from what DoorSpace offers. Bergeron believes that DoorSpace is a great opportunity for the channel partner and MSP communities. About DoorSpace DoorSpace is delivering the next generation of healthcare professional development software through their innovative, people-centric, cloud-based solution that helps healthcare professionals get back to what's important: helping their patients and themselves. Welcome! and Thank you for listening. Have you ever heard it takes two to tango? That is what I feel the degradation of healthcare has become. It is certainly not about the patient anymore. But we physicians are playing way too big of a role in poor healthcare. Do it yourself labs, glucose monitoring, google searches are only as good as the people providing the answers. Who is asking why? Symptoms are placed in an algorithms and a treatment based on pharmacology is initiated. Rarely, do we stop and ask why does a person have these symptoms. What caused my body to malfunction? The quickest answer is my genetics or bad luck. It is similar to the ad on tv when the doctor says I hope we get lucky and you make it. Yikes. Good luck or bad luck is not a reasonable explanation to help someone get better or prevent it from happening again as in the case of bad luck. Stop. Take your own pulse and a nice diaphragmatic breath, and start asking why. That includes doctors as well as patients. Our bodies are amazing, but they are not machines with individual parts. Our systems are integrated. Mess with one part or biologic reaction or movement and you will influence many more. Let's start with taking poisons out in the form of toxic exposures, and chemical based foods and add real food, grown free of contaminates. Let's move our bodies like they were designed to move and not rely so much on things that limit our movements. We will continue to provide healthy ways to improve health span.
