Companies have come back to this model time and time again. Here is a quick history lesson: Podshow/Mevio 8/2005 – 4/2014 (116 months – 38.8 million dollars spent) Podango 9/2006 – 12/2008 (27 Months) wildvoice.com 7/2006 – 7/2009 (36 months) mypodcasts.com 2007 – 2011 (estimated 48 months) Audiometric.io 11/ 2012 – 8/2014 (21 months before being purchased by panoply and taken off the market) Opinion Podcasting 11/2015-10/2017 (23 months) Zcast 1/2016 – 1/2019 (36 months) That is an average of 43 months. It's even less if we were to removed Mevio who went through 38.8 million dollars. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/anchorsucks/support

I am honored to be in such good company, and deeply grateful for all the kind words. In looking back at my 13 years I noticed a pattern: How Podcasting Works Valuable content leads to relationships that lead to opportunities. The key word is VALUABLE content. Then you have to work at relationships, and you need to take advantage of every opportunity. Look back I see how: 6:00 Who are Dave's influences? Website Hosting Issues [spp-timestamp time="1:48"] Dave has been with Hostgator.com forever (you can get 25% off using the coupon code " podcastcoach " ). He loves their support, but lately it seems like he is having more and more issues. He is thinking of moving the School of Podcasting to WPEngine.com before he does jim and Dave talk about some optional website hosting companies like Maplegrove Partners. Clammr Dicusssion with Daniel J Lewis. Daniel is enjoying sharing other content, consuming other content (without subscribing to the show), as well as sharing his own content. Daniel is from the Audacity to Podcast What do you think of doing a show that would be super short like 20 seconds long. A short podcast makes you get to the point. [spp-timestamp time="10:45"] Is there a difference between a www.askthepodcastcoach.com and just askthepodcastcoach.com (looks like a caching issue - and it was). The Simple Podcast Press plugin now allows you to jump to a certain point in your show. Dave, Jim and Daniel talk about working with smaller companies. [spp-timestamp time="17:40"] Do something nice for someone else Dave contributed to Kathy Kelly's book about Autism. Kathy successfully raised Nine thousand dollars towards to publishing of her book. Small Company Discussion (Continued) [spp-timestamp time="20:10"] The Simple Podcast Press plugin now allows you to jump to a certain point in your show. It will also make a list of your past show (coming in the future) and you can also change the color of the player. Workign with smaller companies that can pivot and change quickly unlike a bigger company that has to go through a committee.   Podbean Update - Now Available with a Redirect [spp-timestamp time="25:45"] Dave is confused by their front page, and it turns out they do have a way to redirect your show podcast RSS feed. They do have support (I had to use them once when my downloads stopped working for no reason). Podcasts.com kind of dodged the question to a yes/no question. Podcasts.com came on the scene recently so I sent them: 1. How do you make money (business plan). A: Some of the podcasts have ads on their searchable directory index page on Podcasts.com page. Those ads pay for the costs. 2. Do you change my mp3 file name? 3. Do you change my mp3 ID# tags? 4. Do you change the bit rate of my show (stereo/mono/bit rate) A: 2 – 4 – Those are all part of our management portal. These are yes no questions, and when you don’t answer them I assume the worst.  5. Do you supply an RSS redirect in the event I don’t want to use your service. A: We do not at this time. 6. Is there a way to show my rss feed from my website (that I use to manage my show) instead of the RSS feed from podcasts.com A: You could create a redirect URL on your site which you can give out and have it just redirect to ours. Notice  the tech support person is trying to get me to redirect my traffic to their website. (Or its a person who doesn’t understand podcasting, or they don’t want to display anything from your website). In speaking with Daniel J Lewis of the Audacity to Podcast, he had stated that he had some email exchanges and they seemed open to putting a link back to your website. Take it for what it’s worth. I see it as a platform for secondary distribution. Podclear and Soundcloud are now out of Beta Podclear is a way to record skype calls, and Soundcloud has been rumored to be losing money and looking for schedule D funding. The worst case scenario in the past was Podango which was a media hosting company that gave their customers a week to leave. Mixlr free year for Jim ran out. Their interface is a bit confusing at time. Michael Ray Has Questions About Owning Your RSS Feed [spp-timestamp time="41:17 "] Dave uses Libsyn's feed for his show. When his website had an issue, his show came out as it always does because Libsyn was fine (and his audience is subscribed to his RSS feed on Libsyn). The Ask the Podcast Coach using PowerPress (and the built in RSS Feed). You need to control your feed. Here is a video help explain why. Dave recommend Backup Creator to backup your website/wordpress. https://youtu.be/TdQrKhjF7IY  ADHD Think Tank Menu Questions Menus are used the create the navigation for your site. You should have at a minimum a Contact Page, and the About Page. From there its up to you. You can use the cryptx plugin to cut down on people spamming your podcast. You can look at other websites to use as ideas on how you can create your menus. Next Week Will Be the First Ever Dave-less Show Dave will be out next week, but Jim is going to get the keys and Drive. Recording On the Road Kathy wants to know record on the road. You can use the Voice Memo app and upload it to Dropbox. There are other tools like Bossjock Studio, and Rode LE on your phone.

First, beating a herd of dead horses Today, I want to beat some dead horses. In case you are a new listener (and I’ve had a good blast of new listeners lately, welcome) I want to go over some of the things that should be common knowledge by now. But first…. A disclaimer: *** Even though I am part of the Blubrry and RawVoice support team, the advice given here is MY educated opinion based on 10 years of podcasting and is given freely and without regard to my relationship to any podcasting host or service and would be the same if I didn't have that relationship. *** Now some news News: Soundcloud Podcasting is out of beta (open to everyone) http://techcrunch.com/2015/04/28/soundcloud-opens-its-podcasting-features-to-everyone/ Sarah Koenig makes Time’s Top 100 influential people. http://time.com/3823276/sarah-koenig-2015-time-100/ Podbean now allows 301 redirects of feeds! (from Daniel J. Lewis from the Audacity to Podcast) "Just wanted to let you know we've already updated the 301 redirect feature, so it is now available for Podbean users wishing to easily redirect their feeds when moving to a new service." ----------------- Feedburner Feedburner is the best of 2006 technology. While it does still work, it causes more problems than it solves. I think the word is getting out there that you don’t need feedburner to podcast, some “gurus” still say to use it. It used to be the #1 support question but now it’s down to maybe #10. Not that Google has fixed anything, just podcasters are getting smarter about it. (I will take *some* credit for that). Along with my Colleagues Dave Jackson of the School of Podcasting, Daniel J. Lewis of Audacity to Podcast and Todd Cochrane of The New Media Show, Geek News Central and the CEO Of Rawvoice Inc. (parent company of Blubrry) FREE hosting We had another “Free” podcast hosting outfit pop up last week. Podcasts.com (Great domain). Just remember, if the service is worth money and you pay nothing, you are the product. Podcasts.com is owned by http://www.emergemedia.com/ which also has the great domains Translate.com, brands.com and a bunch of other high profile domains. My guess is there are only into it for the money and will figure out that free is a lousy business model. Other companies have tried this and failed. Mevio.com (Podshow), Podango.com and a few more. iTunes RELAX - iTunes listings are what they are, you should worry about keeping your RSS feed healthy. The rest will follow. Category Podcasting I had an episode of QuickHits about this and I’ve talked about it here, but Unless you have a need for it, don’t use it. Use channels or post types instead. ---------------- Top 6 things to keep your wordpress podcast healthy 1, Make sure you are on a good webhost. Godaddy LINUX, BlueHost (use my link), dreamhost and many others. Just make sure you can install wordpress from the control panel. 2. Keep everything updated as soon as an update is available. There was a Wordpress problem lately, so if you haven’t updated, do it. 3. Don’t get too fancy. Make sure your podcast works before you worry about how the website looks. If you HAVE to have a complicated website, maybe you should install a second wordpress install to power your podcast. This also includes keeping the number of plugins low. The more plugins the more stress you are going to put on your webserver. 4. Test everything when you add a plugin, update a plugin or update wordpress. Here is my checklist for double checking things are working: Do the episodes still play Look at your RSS feed in FIREFOX (other browsers won’t work as well) and see that the title and artwork are correct. Also make sure each post has a media file. Every so often, go to your blubrry listing, itunes listing, stitcher listing and any other directories you are in and make sure everything looks good and is up to date.

Today I take a look at Podcasts.com a new free media hosting company. I've seen a few services like this come and go along the last 10 years. So many people get excited because its free media hosting. Here are some of the things that I have experienced. They show Adam Carolla on their front page along with people like the Twit.tv network. I would be VERY surprised if these people were using their service. I sent a support request over 48 hours ago and have received no response. There is no way to put the audio on YOUR website. Their system is all about pointing people to THEIR website. They create a secondary RSS feed for your show, and they offer NO redirect. In other words, they get between you and your audience. This is really bad Their stats are beyond basic There isn't much documentation for some of their features On the other hand They offer android and iOs apps to listen to podcasts They offer private subscription only podcasts They offer the ability to sell merchandise The site is owned by Emerge Media who state that "We're grateful to help 50+ million people communicate in 190 countries, find information and entertain when you need it most." They own person.com, directions.com, womens-health.com, information.com, muchgames.com, bands.com,translate.com and now podcasts.com Their mission statement is, "Taking on the essential roots of everyday tasks and breathing real life into the technology behind them. Empowering humanity in supporting each other and giving them the tools to create a meaningful society surrounded by technology." My Opinion As it doesn't cost you anything, if you've got the time I could see uploading files on to this service as a secondary distribution channel. Realize this may not bring We've Seen This Before Podbean is still showing twit on their front page (again, doubtful as they have sponsored bandwdith). Around 2006 Podshow (later Mevio) invested a TON of resources to make a web based system that made podcast subscriptions easy. It also duplicated your feed and people got REALLY mad. There is an article in the latest edition of Podertainment magazine explaining how people who use Podomatic are somewhat slave to them (as they control your feed, you have to upgrade to be able to put in the iTunes redirect to tell iTunes to listen to your new feed). The Average Life Span of Free Media Hosting How long Does free last? Podango 2. Mypodcast.com 4. Years Justin.tv 7 years Podshow/Mevio 9 years (they spent over 30 million in funds) Average? 5.5 year   Because of My Podcast - I Interviewed a Supreme Court Justice Eivind Arntsen shares how his podcast about the (loosely translated) "Legal ABCs" in Norway lead to him interviewing a Supreme Court Justice. You can find his podcast at www.dalan.no More Free Hosting Woes: Mark From Geocaching Podcast Marc explains how he saw a podcast in New and Noteworthy that played a prerecorded message from Podomatic because the host had burned through their bandwidth limit. It's a shames as you can pay somewhere between $5 and $20 to have unlimited bandwidth with companies like Libsyn.com and Blubrry.com (and you can get a FREE month using the coupon code sopfree at either provider). NOTE: This technology was sold to Podango after this episode. Go to http://cms.podango.net however for the most part its been broken ever since. The great thing about podcasting is its getting big enough for companies to start building tools for podcasters. Today we look at the Audio Lite system from Gigavox (the makers of the Levelator). www.gigavox.com You can record your podcast in segements. Then (if needed) you can update certain segments (like an advertiser spot) in the current AND PAST podcasts. I'm using this not for advertisers, but for a non-profit (my church). Instead of having advertising spots rotate in and out, we use it for our calendar, and prayer concerns (items that chance from week to week). This way people are up to date with the latest news (no matter what episode they listen to). In reality your podcast can be evergreen. The information can be updated in past shows. The good news is its free to use. Take some time to think about it and how you want your podcast to go from section to section. I love it. Oh yeah. IT's FREE. The “bad” news is it doesn't work with Libsyn (it does with the more expensive Libsyn Pro). So I looked at some different web hosts that had unlimited bandwidth (like Midphase.com ) and ended up with Dreamhost.com (as they increase your storage and bandwidth the longer you stay on their system). Here are my likes and dislikes of 2008 In 2008 I was glad to see the enhancements of great tools for podcasters. Wizzard put out their new player, and Paul Colligan and crew continue to add more features to premiumcast. I like the fact that in 2008 whenever I spoke to a group and ask "Who has ever heard of podcasting" almost all hands were raised, and almost as many when I would ask "How many have actually listened to a podcast?" That trend is continuing. I disliked that in 2008 my audience didn't seem to grow as fast as it did in 2007. It was a slower, gradually climb as apposed to 2007 which had more spikes. On the other hand I'm doing less to promote my shows. In 2008 Podshow changed their name to Mevio, and changed their payment plan to me. I can't discuss the details, but as I'm listing it as a dislike you can figure out how it affectd me financially. What I do like about Mevio is they have given me the potential to earn more money using their sponsors and my own in the future and I now own 100% of my show. So there is a mixed bag that will hopefully blossom. In 2008 I am sad to see and hear podcasters selling out for much less than they are worth. In many cases an advertisement will be in your show for life. I had one company offer to pay me 7 dollars for a link on my site. A link that had to be permanent, and more insane things that totally devalued my listeners and visitors to my website. While I have made decent money using affiliate marketing and podcasting, I am bummed that so many people want to use the CPM method which only works if you have mammoth audiences. Which leads to me one of my biggest disappointments In April I was told that Podango was working on fixing their show builder lite software that helps you create your podcast on the fly. Then if you get a new sponsor, the new sponsor is inserted into the back catalog. This is HUGE for people trying to sell advertising . While their system is easy, and if you have the time to republish all your old shows  - it work, but I'm frustrated that their system (which from what I understand was much more fragile than expected when they purchased it from Gigavox). I'm even more frustrated that no company has developed a competitor for the podcaster with a few hundred listeners, and would love to have a dynamic version of their podcast. I like that the uber-hype of podcasting has crescendo'ed to a bit and people are realizating that in the same way that VCR's didn't kill the movie business, Podcasting is not killing radio. People are starting to understand that Podcasting is a phenomenal channel (just like email, fax, and print) to get your message out to the world. It also is probably one of the most effective and cheapest. I disliked that when the economy took a hit that I had members of the School of Podcasting left. However, I did like that in the midst of the panic, more companies hired me as a podcast consultant to just "do it for them." While I don't own an iPhone, I am very happy people can download a podcast without even being near a computer. This is HUGE. My biggest dislike was having three websites hacked, and one gmail account hacked (that for the record I've know been without for 14 days) My biggest like was emailing, communicating, tweeting, with great people like you, and the members of the School of Podcasting. I recently updated all of our wordpres tutorials to show version 2.7 and in the process streamlined much of the learning curve at the School of Podcasting. If you've been thinking of signing up, now would be a great time. Don't forget about that coupon code SANTA to save 25% now through the end of the year. There will be no extension. I want to thank each and everyone of you for listening, and contributing over this year. I would deeply appreciate your feedback at dave "at" schoolofpodcasitng.com or call in your comments at 888-563-3228 or go to www.schoolofpodcasting.com/contact for the many other ways of chiming in with the podcast. I would love to hear your thoughts on 2008. Comment out at the blog, and let me know. Speaking of that, I will be taking next week off and I will be switching my feed from one website to another. Now the good news is 99% of you have subscribed to my feedburner feed and shouldn't notice any change. All I'm doing is switching the original RSS feed (which came from Libsyn) and substituting my RSS feed from the School of Podcasting. I've migrated all of my old posts and when you go to shownotes.schoolofpodcasting.com you will now go to the School of Podcasting instead of the old Libsyn site. In doing this I've already seen an increase in traffic to my site. Hopefully it won't cause any issues with you my loyal subscribers. Thanks to all. Have a safe and happy Chrsitmas season, and have a blessed new year. Please start living a life worth podcasting about, and until 2009 - class dismissed.
