Happy Podcasting! I hope your having fun creating your show and if you need extra help... feel free to ask me. Today I mention that you should be honest with your listeners. I know it might sound like common sense but there are some shows that dont. More than just content, they listen to you because they like and trust you. If you remove the trust, then they wont be listening anymore. So just be honest. I had Chris Curran of the Podcast Engineering School join me today. We talked all about his love of audio production, what makes a good podcast, and how to create really good audio. HIs school is dessigned to help you become a podcast engineer so you can make a new career out of it. https://podcastengineeringschool.com/ The Kris and Kristine Show https://podtasticaudio.com/

You can't see it, but it's there. And you know it's there. There's such a depth to this human experience. And to just get caught up in the day-to-day news cycle is so superficial. And again, everyone is on their journey, and all the phases of the journey are good.” (18:37) (Chris) “Our bodies are what they are. Our soul is pure; it's part of God. So, our soul is what it is. Our body is what it is. So, the mind is the only thing that we can change, or manipulate, or massage, or improve, or regulate.” (23:09) (Chris) “If you don't regulate your mind, what happens is your mind runs rampant. You should be the master of your mind. Your mind should not be the master of you.” (27:34) (Chris) “Here's part of the problem. I'm a professional in the audio and recording industry. So, if I try to sing something, I can actually hear how bad it is.” (42:32) (Chris) Resources MentionedChris' LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/fractalchriscurran/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/fractalchriscurran/) Chris' Podcasts: The Podcast Engineering School Show – https://podcastengineeringschool.com/category/show/ (https://podcastengineeringschool.com/category/show/) The Mystic Show – http://themysticshow.net/host/ (http://themysticshow.net/host/) Chris' Book: Leap Beyond Your Limits – https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1599303426/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1599303426/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) Podcast Engineering School – https://podcastengineeringschool.com/ (https://podcastengineeringschool.com/) Podcast Engineering School YouTube Channel – https://www.youtube.com/c/PodcastEngineeringSchool (https://www.youtube.com/c/PodcastEngineeringSchool) Podcast Engineering School Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/podcastengineer/ (https://www.instagram.com/podcastengineer/) Podcast Engineering School Twitter – https://twitter.com/podcastengineer (https://twitter.com/podcastengineer) Podcast Engineering School LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/company/podcast-engineering-school/ (https://www.linkedin.com/company/podcast-engineering-school/) Uncut – https://uncut.fm/ (https://uncut.fm/) Books Mentioned: Communion – https://www.amazon.com/Communion (https://www.amazon.com/Communion) Podcast Junkies Website: https://www.podcastjunkies.com/ (podcastjunkies.com) Podcast Junkies YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/Podcastjunkies/ (https://www.youtube.com/c/Podcastjunkies/) Podcast Junkies Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/podcastjunkiesjunkies/...

It seems like there's always this pressure to do everything. To be everywhere. And that applies not only to (sometimes) taking clients who aren't a great fit, but also to the idea of "being everywhere." But do we actually have to be everywhere? Do we actually have to do everything? Do we HAVE to be on social media? Or can we operate and grow our businesses without being on social media? Listen as Chris Curran shares what happened when he disappeared from social media and Carrie shares what happened when she took a break from it. Listen to DiscoverIn what ways can social media be healthy for us and our businesses? In what ways can social media be unhealthy for podcast editors? What was it like for Chris when he left Facebook? As podcasters, we sometimes joke about people trying to game the system - the "podcast promoter" constantly messaging on LinkedIn, the host buying guest spots on other shows, and more. But the fact is, it's no laughing matter. Not because people are gaming the system. But because when things go wrong, it could be our clients who take the hit. Their shows could be removed from directories. Their reputations could be tarnished or ruined. They might just want to give up. We don't want that. We want our clients to succeed. We want to see their shows grow organically, and it can be done. But if they don't know what to look out for, they could fall victim to someone else's black hat without even knowing it. Thankfully, https://greatland.media (Leslie Martin) joined us to share his experiences with the dark side of marketing so that we can know EXACTLY how some of these scams work. You'll discover: How Leslie unintentionally got involved with a black hat marketer. How the entire system was set up to generate consistent cash flow and keep customers from leaving. How the scammer managed to get control of websites so that his customers COULDN"T leave. Some of the red flags to look for (hint: one of them is SECRET KNOWLEDGE that NOBODY else knows.) The story of three authors, a voice modulator, and more. Leslie shared some incredible knowledge and insight with us and you won't want to miss this. Does sound quality really matter in podcasting? Well, if you ask most listeners and today's guest, a trained and experienced audio engineer who has worked with some of the biggest names in music, the answer is a resounding YES. Chris Curran runs the Podcast Engineering School, where he emphasizes the importance of quality in all areas of podcasting, including sound. Chris also hosts his own podcast, the Podcast Engineering Show, and works as a podcast engineer for companies who are looking to making podcasting a part of their marketing strategy. On this episode, we dig into his experience in these areas and discuss how podcast content has become the central hub of content creation for many of the companies that he has worked with - and why virtually every company he has worked with has been thrilled with the impact that podcasting has had on their marketing. We also get into some questions from listeners, discussing considerations for setting up a recording space when recording with more that one person in a room, the drawbacks of recording two people on one microphone, and freedom in designing a format for your new podcast. Today we talk with Mark and Steve from the Podcast Editor Academy. While there are other resources that dive deep into audio, this website covers audio editing and goes deep into the "growing your editing business" side. If you're wondering how you get clients? They have sales scripts and insights from over 6000 editors. You don't have to know everything there is to know about audio to be an editor, and this website can help you start and grow a podcast editing service. My Favorite Podcast Is - DEADLINE December 14th, 2020 02:30 Every year the last episode of the year is made up of listeners (like you) sharing what their favorite podcast is and why (and be sure to mention your podcast as well). The deadline is December 14th, 2020 (next Monday) as it takes me some time to edit them all together. Go to www.schoolofpodcasting.com/question Podcast Editor Academy Founders Steve Stewart and Mark Deal Mark Deal has been helping businesses (especially lawyers) out of Atlanta and is the head of Podcast Atlanta (a HUGE group of podcasters). Steve Stewart started a financial podcast and started editing his friend's podcasts. This lead to another friend, and another friend which lead to Steve putting his podcast on pause and doing editing full time. He wanted a Facebook group that only talked about post-production so he created one (see http://podcasteditors.club/ ). Please note that the power of this group is it is clearly defined what they will (and more importantly will not ) talk about in the group. This makes it stand out from other groups, and it is growing at a rapid rate. The Podcast Editor Academy started with a conference of editors and continues to grow with special speakers, presentations, and roundtables. When I logged in, I was impressed with the smooth transition of content and resources. If your not sure if you should join the Podcast Editor Academy or Podcast Engineering School. Join the Academy as there is a HUGE discount for the Podcast Engineering School that will pay for the price of the Academy. So you could start with the Academy, and then if needed take a deep dive into audio using the discount for the Engineering School (along with many other discounts). If you want to start small, join the Facebook group and see what the discussions are like, and then joined the Academy when you're ready and keep up to date by signing up for their newsletter. Audio Editing Survey I'm thinking of launching my own editing service (or maybe include it as part of a package). As I always talk about giving your audience what they want, I need to know what you want when it comes to an audio editor (so I can decide if I want to pursue this or not). There is a chance to win a $25 Amazon gift card. Go to www.audioeditingservice.com YouTube Video: Set it and Regret it? “... vision is what you see in your mind… No one can see your vision except you. And working towards that vision is... the challenge.” - Michael (MiTi) Jerry Pulled in a dozen directions dictated by running a business... you can quickly lose your once-bright vision and be pulled away. How do we recenter? Reevaluate? Return to providing services that bring more than just income but truly bring value to our lives and to our clients? In this episode, we take these on inevitable questions. Michael aka MiTi (pronounced Mighty) Jerry joins us to discuss his journey, as well as offer his advice, his success so far, and ask some questions of his own. As a podcast engineer and editor for businesses, Michael is the founder of https://miti5audio.com/ (MiTi5Audio.com), the host of the podcast, DriveTimeConversations, and a graduate of https://podcastengineeringschool.com/ (Podcast Engineering School). On Podcast Editors Mastermind, we wanted to start a series we can all relate to and learn from - where we tackle real life issues and detours in our businesses. We invite you to join us as we contemplate several truths, including: that value is subjective, how our vision, lives and businesses change over time, why it’s crucial to regularly step back to reclaim our core values and mission... and how it’s a journey for all of us. Highlights:Two keys to landing clients: Know your clients and present podcasting (or improving an existing podcast) as invaluable to business-building. How to frame a client’s podcast to achieve their specific business vision. Take stock of yourself and your business to grow: your core purpose, your motivation, your passion, your vision. Why value is subjective. How to define value in a way that makes sense to a client. Designing your business to support the life you desire -- aka recapturing your vision. Why talking too much can lose you the sale. Tips to prioritize when you have more responsibilities than time. How to step back when you’re spending too long on an edit. Tips to limit distractions. Hear about Michael’s new podcast where he interviews people from all over the world. Evaluating what is “work” for you. Homework for all: Think and define your vision, your values, your mission. Who are you at your core? What five words would you say describe you? What five words would others say describe you? Podcast editing is a growing industry that still has opportunities for a lot of people. But the question still remains: "How can I differentiate myself as an editor and be irreplaceable for my clients?" Dava Visaya from https://podcastengineers.com/ (PodcastEngineers.com) joined us to talk about that question. Dave is a podcast editor from the Philippines who has an interesting career trajectory. He owns a small podcast production agency with all in-house producers and editors (at least in-house when they're not under COVID-19 restrictions). He had the goal of building a large agency with a deep portfolio of clients but has recently decided to shift his business. Listen to discover: How many times the cats joined us :) How Dave didn't think of himself as a professional early on, even though he was working on a very popular show Challenges and strategies for pricing services, especially when working with international clients What often stops editors from hiring people to help them What you need to have in place before you start hiring The benefits of having your team in-house, operating on a single platform and suite of software and plugins Ideas for how you can differentiate yourself from your competitors to the point that you might be the only option your clients ever consider Why many strategies to "add value" often fail (hint: consider who actually DEFINES what's valuable) Working within boundaries - even across time zones Ideas for what you can have in place before you ever talk to prospective clients so that you can get them what they want - right out of the gate. And a LOT more. This was an incredible conversation and you're going to LOVE it! One of the questions we hear from new podcast editors all the time is, "How can I find my first client?" Let's be honest - it can be hard, confusing, daunting, and scary. You know what you're doing but you don't know where to find clients. Or more specifically, you might not know where (and how) to find the RIGHT clients. Should you start editing on Fiverr? Should you work for free to build your portfolio? Should you just pitch every podcaster in a Facebook group? Should you troll the forums and groups looking for the best possible podcast clients? Should you focus on building your brand - even if you don't have a body of work to show for it? These are all tough questions. And trying to find answers can be paralyzing. You might be afraid that making the wrong decision will lock you into something that doesn't work. And even worse, making NO decision will definitely keep you from getting started. The good news is that there's no ONE right answer. The bad news is that there's no ONE right answer. Listen as our four Yetis share the stories of their first clients.Daniel shares how he got started on (and still gets some clients from) a popular discount platform. He shares how he was WAY underpriced at first, how he's approached getting to rate parity, and how he now uses that platform to screen out the wrong clients. Carrie shares how she submitted around 100 proposals in a single day that led to her first client using a different platform. She talks about her experience, how that platform has changed, and the incredible administrative overhead that goes with a platform like that. Bryan shares how a guest on his first podcast helped jumpstart his editing, why he invested in Chris Curran's Podcast Engineering School, and how he's moved from editing pro-bono to professional editing as a side hustle podcast editor. Jennifer shares how a radio station and an online course led to her first editing clients and how she's transitioned her focus and efforts over the years. We're not saying that any of these ways are right (or even recommended) but they're our stories. They're how WE got started. And maybe you can learn from both what worked and what didn't work for us. I talked to some amazing podcast hosts and podcast professionals when I was at Podfest in Orlando. It was a great experience, and many experts were kind enough to share podcast tips that will help podcasters and especially beginners have a smooth start and a show that they feel great about. Super Joe Pardo who runs the Independent Podcast Conference shares the importance of letting your personality shine through and the goal that you should have to move the needle. Then I talk with Glenn the Geek who has been podcasting since 2006 and has hosted thousands of shows. He runs the Horse Radio Network and the Florida Podcast Network. Glenn talks about the importance of consistency and what sponsors are really looking for. If advertising is something you are interested in, his advice is very useful. Chris Curran from Podcast Engineering School shares tips for microphone technique including how to speak soft and low and speak loudly. Harry Duran from Podcast Junkies talks about how to leverage the power of SEO in your podcast and how and why you should do that. If legal issues are something you’re concerned about, pay special attention to this next clip from Gordon Firemark, the podcast lawyer. Gordon talks about protecting your brand and content and gives us information on the types of consent forms and contracts that are useful to podcasters. Dave Jackson from the School of Podcasting gives super good advice about what new podcasters really shouldn’t do. Even though it's a common mistake that many make. Jeni Wren Stottrup from Gritty Birds Podcasting gives a great tip for avoiding perfectionism and fear. Craig from Ingles Podcast talks about the importance of audience engagement. Coach Chris from The Personal Branding Playbook talks about how important marketing is. Emily Peck Prokop from E Podcast Productions talks about not trying to do everything all at once, and Christy Haussler from Team Podcast rounds out the show with her advice on rankings and list building. Show Notes: [03:13] Super Joe Pardo runs the Independent Podcast Conference, and he feels that it's important to have your personality come out in your podcast. The goal all the time is to move the needle and make people feel something. [04:09] Glenn the Geek is from the Horse Radio and Florida Podcast Network. He's been podcasting since 2006. It takes awhile to make money. You need to be consistent. Sponsors are buying you not your show. [06:27] Go to small companies in your niche. Work with them and involve them from the beginning. [07:53] Chris Curran runs Podcast Engineering School. He teaches people how to engineer and produce podcasts at a professional level. He also hosts the podcast engineering show. [08:43] Microphone technique is really important. Stay close and speak into the microphone from the right angle. You can get closer to sound soft and low. Lean back to say something loud. Be passionate and love what you are talking about. [09:26] Harry Duran is the host of Podcast Junkies. His tip is to leverage the SEO power of podcasting. Choose a name that people are searching for that also speaks to a pain point. [10:08] Be careful how you choose your name and what you put in your description. Choose words that people are searching for. [10:16] Gordon Firemark is the podcast lawyer. Creating media content is big business, so think of yourself as a business. You may need to form a company. [11:10] Protect yourself by protecting your title and your brand. Register a trademark for your brand and a copyright for your content. [11:41] Get consent from your guests in the form of a release. Use royalty free music or make sure you have the proper license. Always use contracts. [13:10] Dave Jackson is from the School of Podcasting. He also works for Libsyn tech support. Don't compare your show to other people's shows. [14:28] Jeni Wren Stottrup is from Gritty Birds Podcasting. She's a producer, editor, and podcast coach. Once you have a concept of what your show is then get your equipment and record right away. [15:33] Craig from Ingles Podcast says gauge the success of your podcast by audience engagement as opposed to download numbers. [18:30] Coach Chris from The Personal Branding Playbook says sharing episodes instead of marketing them is one of the biggest mistakes he sees podcasters make. [23:10] Emily Peck Prokop from E Podcast Productions says new podcasters need to start with one step at a time and stop trying to do everything at once. [24:01] Christy Haussler from Team Podcast says not to focus on ranking in iTunes categories because it won't translate to anything tangible. The list is a vanity metric. Every podcaster should begin with an offer of something free to build their email list. [26:13] Darrell's takeaways: Build that email list. Sponsors are buying you. Don't get too clever with your podcast name. Make your podcast name easily searchable. Focus on engaging with your audience. Provide a way for your listeners to engage with you. Keeping a spreadsheet of your listeners is really helpful. Focus on one thing at a time. Podcast Movement 2019 Day Three: You still have one day to meet me for coffee, lunch, breakfast, or whatever! send me an email (mailto:evo@podcastlaunch.pro) . Let's get together this Podcast Movement! Even though my voice crapped out -- I hope I'm not getting sick, but I probably am -- I'm back with another recap of another fantastic day at Podcast Movement 2019. Here's who I had great conversations with today: Jijo and Aleesha from BuyMeACoffe.com/evoterra. No, they didn't make that just for me. In fact, that's not even how I first met Jijo. But that's what happens when you understand product/market fit, and he's back to a product that does work. And yeah, I'm trying it! I caught up with Andrea and her brother John of Andrea Sager Law. They're helping podcasters protect their IP with trademark protection services, something many podcasters -- big and small -- fail to think about. And I'm guilty of it too! Alban was very gracious with his time, explaining to me Buzzsprout's approach to the market. I really love that they're making podcasting better by "down-coding" audio files to podcast-appropriate steps, even if their customer accidentally(?) upload uncompressed .wav files! I downloaded the an app-based chat group for Podcast Pontifications listeners. (https://www.flickapp.com/) You can have one too... and it's free! Hindenburg Journalist Pro is the editing tool we use for engineering our client's shows (and this one!). There was one feature that I wondered if I fully understood. After chatting with Nick, it was clear that I hadn't grokked the full usage. But good news: I didn't need to! Stellar support. I rarely conduct interviews, and most of my clients pull their interviewees from their own personal contact list. So I'd never considered much the need for services like Interview Valet. But after talking with Karen for a few minutes, I really saw the value. And did I mention her service is free for podcasters looking for guests? great things they are doing to enable internal corporate communications (https://www.podbean.com) -- a big part of their business! It's always great to catch up with Chris and Josh from the Podcast Engineering School. (https://podcastengineeringschool.com/) If you really want to step up your game behind the board, these guys know what they are doing. I've known Podcast Partnership (http://thepodcastreport.com/) was so comprehensive! If you forced me to pick one company that's leading the charge in advancing podcasting, I'd have a tough time not picking RadioPublic. I've been talking with Joshua for years now, and it was good to put a name to a face. But I also got a chance to meet Jake, Nicola, and Chris, spending a little time with each to learn more about how they are actively working to make podcasting better. Fabulous! Spotify (https://spotify.com) certainly wins for the most impressive booth at the show, and Rollie was kind enough to spend some time with me. Not surprisingly, he didn't divulge any of Spotify's upcoming plans. But I was surprised that the tech team for Spotify's podcast initiative is based out of Mesa, AZ! That's just a few miles away. I wonder if I can get a tour? Probably not. Mattia from Voxnest (https://www.voxnest.com/) started to catch me up on all the things their company has going on. Talk about a wide net that goes beyond what we think of as podcasting! And of course, I always enjoy my time with Zach and Rock from I'm on the advisory board for one of Rebel Base Media's products, Captivate (https://rebelbasemedia.io) .) ... but even with all of that, I still haven't made it to all the vendors I want to see. So I guess that means a bonus bonus episode coming tomorrow? Cheers! This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy Support this podcast

Podcast Movement 2019 Conference, August 14-16, 2019, in Orlando, Florida, has many conference tracks, sessions, meet-ups and networking events to consider. As the host of Agile Digital Business podcast, I'm excited to be attending the conference and to get to meet up with many of my friends and colleagues who are in the podcasting arena. As an author, speaker and instructor in digital leadership and transition, and voice search marketing, the topics planned for the conference are particularly timely for me. Bossjock, Backpack Studio App Please note that I recorded this studio remotely while in Orlando. I was using the Bossjock app on my iPhone 7 Plus for the first time. After recording the show segments and bringing my music in to the app to create the episode, I later found that there is a new app available, Backpack Studio, that provides for more advanced podcast recording and editing while on a mobile device. I'm eager to download and try Backpack Studio before my next remote podcast recording and editing session! Here is a summary of topics I cover in this episode about planning for participation in Podcast Movement: The conference tracks include: creation; technical; industry; marketing; monetization; society, culture and advocacy; and audio drama/fiction. I am starting the conference with the Women's Networking Event promoted by the hosts of She Podcasts, Elsie Escobar and Jessica Kupferman. The event is sponsored by the team at Rebel Base Media and a fellow Youpreneur Academy member, Mark Asquith. I seriously looked forward to it every week. What makes it so different from all the other courses I’ve purchased over the years is the live, in-person element. It makes it so much more enjoyable, and I know for a fact I would never have made it through all this material if it were a self-paced, video course.” ~Adam C., Class 18D Alumni “If you are serious about producing podcasts and would like to learn from a true leader in the field, Chris Curran’s Podcast Engineering School is a huge value. This is a lifetime of experience that will benchmark your knowledge among the best in podcast sound engineering. I am now highly aware of the process, production, and importance of professional sound for podcast listeners – and I know how to make it happen!” ~Jim C., Class 17A Alumni “As a beginner in the world of audio, I really benefited from Chris’s Podcast Engineering School. Chris is a very good professor because he was very interactive with every single classmate and very patient with all the help he would give. After graduating I feel WAY more confident producing audio than I ever would have without this program. Overall, I highly recommend PES to anyone interested in learning the straight to the point no fluff version of professional audio engineering for podcast production.” ~Erika K., Class 17A Alumni “The Podcast Engineering School is an absolutely stellar course. It’s amazingly thorough while remaining focused on providing you exactly what you need to become a professional podcast producer.” ~Bryan E., Class 17A Alumni “Podcast Engineering School is a worthwhile and valuable investment for anyone who wants to produce a high quality podcast. Best of all, it’s all very practical, and I’m able to apply it immediately so I can “SOUND GREAT!” ~Barry G., Class 18B Alumni “I learned tons about recording, mixing tracks, adding effects to create higher quality podcasts, and so much more. I’m already applying these skills big time. Chris is a great teacher who really knows what he’s talking about when it comes to sound engineering. In episode 633 of the School of Podcasting, we are looking at Podcasting Events and asking, "is it worth attending?" We also touch base with Danny Peña who has created a movie about his story and his show Gamer tag Radio (that is now winning awards at Movie Festivals) to help introduce people to podcasting and to his show. Danny can point to one thing for his success, "Community." I drove down to Columbus to Ohio to hang out with him (along with Daniel J Lewis from the Audacity to Podcast). Danny met some of his audience and brought them backstage at the event and introduced them to some of their favorite gamers. Think about how huge that is for the audience members. Think about going backstage at the Super Bowl to meet Tom Brady. In this conversation you will hear: Danny put together an award-winning movie about his story and the rise of Gamertag Radio using iMovie. Today we are looking at not taking no for an answer. We are looking at trying new strategies for old problems. My friend Marcus Couch heard "No" multiple times every year when he tried to start a Chicago Bulls fan cast. He didn't give up. He tried and tried again. We hear his story of asking a sponsor to help. We all want more subscribers, will using a text tool like slicktext.com help by putting your subscription one click away? Speaking of new strategies, should you put together a focus group to see if your show is headed in the right direction? He now lives in California where writes, coaches, and podcasts (see Marcus Couach.com ). Marcus wanted to do THE OFFICIAL FAN podcast for the Chicago Bulls. He's had the domain bulllspodcasts.com for years. He asked the team, and they said "No." He asked the next year and the year after that. This went on a while. Marcus reached out to one of the Bulls Sponsors. Marcus was now part of the Sponsor's package. He turned a No, into a yes. He saw where one way was blocked, and kept looking for another path. He also used the strategy that bands do when trying to find a band member, he went to YouTube and found someone who had an audience on YouTube talking about the bulls. Marcus had the podcasting knowledge, a sponsor, and a passion, and his co-host Wyse Black had an audience. The two worked out a deal and now have launched the podcast with a sponsor, fan giveaways, and an audience. Why Your Podcast Needs a Focus Group 24:45 Rob Walch often uses this story of Marketing your podcast and how marketing will not save bad content (The Lone Ranger vs The Sixth Sense movies). So I decided to dig in deeper. Dave's equation for more listeners is The value in an episode multiplied by the amount of smart promotion = Total Downloads In a nutshell, it boils down to this. 1. Identify who your audience is 2. Determine what content they want to hear. 3. Create content that will inspire them to tell a friend (in other words, its good) 4. Go to where your target audience is 5. Make friends with them, and bring value to every conversation, listen for ideas for future episodes. 6. Then tell them about your show My advice before you start promoting it is to get someone who is not named Mom to listen to your show. These should be your target audience. You need people who will tell you if it’s good, or it’s not. The best marketing won’t save bad content (Think American Idol winners, think The Lone Ranger movie with Johnny Depp). The Lone Ranger According to Wikipedia, “The film grossed $260.5 million worldwide against an estimated $225–250 million production budget and an additional $150 million marketing costs. That means it lost approximately $10 million. On the other hand, great content will inspire word of mouth (Think the Sixth Sense). The Sixth Sense - per Wikipedia The film had a production budget of approximately $40 million (plus $25 million for prints and advertising). It grossed $26.6 million in its opening weekend and spent five weeks as the No. 1 film at the U.S. box office. It earned $293,506,292 in the United States and a worldwide gross of $672,806,292, ranking it 35th on the list of box-office money earners in the U.S. as of April 2010. Box Office Mojo estimates that the film sold over 57.5 million tickets in the US. In the United Kingdom, it was given at first a limited release at 9 screens and entered at No. 8 before climbing up to No. 1 the next week with 430 theaters playing the film. Why was this so successful? Because everyone who saw the Sixth sense told someone about it. They said, "You Must See This move." People who saw the Lone Ranger (myself included in this one) told their friends to NOT go see that movie. Before you go promoting it, you might want to make sure your content is going to resonate with your audience. Promoting a show that brings no value will only allow the world to know how your show should be avoided sooner than later. Get Some Coaching If you want an unbiased opinion, I have two options. I can go over your show into on the Podcast Rodeo Show, or myself and Erik K Johnson an go over your entire podcast on the Podcast Review Show. In the age of social media is email still relvant? If so, how do you grow your list? What makes a good lead magnet? Do I need a lead magnet? This is all discussed in episode 630 of the School of Podcasting Sponsor: Podcast Engineering School [1:38] Podcast Engineering School – next semester starts September 18th and runs through October 30th. The classes are live and Chris packs the 2-hour classes with tons of information Today I did a quick search on Indeed.com for “podcast engineer” and saw quite a few options Program Includes: LIVE Interactive Online Training Two Mentoring Sessions with Chris Curran Major Discounts on Software and Plugins Lifetime Access to the PES closed community Certificate of Completion EARLY BIRD PRICING IS NOW – SIGN UP TODAY AND SAVE BIG https://podcastengineeringschool.com/ What Makes a Good Lead Magnet? 3:23 Thanks to Win Charles from the Ask Win show, Matt Rafferty from the Author Inside You podcast, and Jerry Williams from the FBI Retired podcast for contributing Ryan Deiss at Digital Marketer defines a lead magnet as “a small chunk of value that solves a specific problem for a specific market that is offered in exchange for an opt-in. My buddy (and co-host of the Podcast Review Show) Erik K Johnston did a whole episode about lead magnets. Today we talk about email lists and why you might want to start using one. OptinMonster (which is a great tool/plugin for capturing leads) breaks it into seven parts: Solves a real problem – if your lead magnet doesn’t solve a real problem that your customer avatar has, or if it doesn’t give them something they really want, it won’t work at all. Promises one quick win – your lead magnet should promise (and deliver) one quick win for your avatar. In other words, it should help them to easily achieve something. Super specific – don’t create a lead magnet about something general. The more specific you are about the benefit of your lead magnet, the better it will convert leads. Quick to digest – PDF checklists tend to convert really well because they are so quick and easy to digest. eBooks or lengthy reports may make your prospects feel overwhelmed. High value – your lead magnet should have both high perceived value and high actual value. Instantly accessible – your lead magnet will work best if it is something that can be delivered right away. People love instant gratification. Demonstrates your expertise or Universal Value Proposition – when someone consumes your lead magnet, it should demonstrate your expertise or your unique value proposition. This helps turn leads into customers down the road. Here is a list of 69 effective lead magnets (no email required) Advantages of an Email List? 17:44 The biggest advantage of an email list is you are one click away from your desired call to action, and more than likely you have someone's undivided attention. Most people (hopefully) are not reading their email while driving, etc. You can email your list directly and not have the information appear on your website. You are in contact with your engaged audience. 2000 Facebook followers is not the same as 2000 email subscribers According to a 2015 study, 3.57% is the average open rate. So if you have 1000 subscribers, 35 will open your email Derek Halpern of Social Triggers sent his latest post to his email list and his twitter account Here are the results he got: 50 people clicked on his link from Twitter 1,200 people clicked on his link from his email list His email list might be twice as large as his Twitter following but it still generated about 24 times more clicks. Even your grandma has email. Where To Start? 21:38 Mailchimp is many times the place you start. Why? It' starts free (but if your list grows can be expensive). There are many, many companies out there. I've used Aweber before moving to Convert kit. Aweber is $19/month for 500 subscribers or .038 cents per subscribers Convert kit is $29/month up to 1000 subscribers or .029 cents per subscriber MailChimp is free up to 2000 subscribers but limits the number of emails sent out in the month to 12,000. If you have 1000 subscribers and wanted unlimited emails per month it would be $15 a month at Mailchimp Do I NEED an Email List? Do you need an email list when you starting a podcast, no. But, I hear time and time again that someone in year three pivots their show in a new direction and really, really wishes they had started an email list. Be Very Careful With Affiliate Links Both Amazon Associates (amazon's affiliate program) and Mailchimp have it in their terms of service that sending email with affiliate links is against the rules. Take the Time To Learn Your Email System One of the things you should do upon signing up for an email service is to take the time to go through whatever tutorials they have. For example, I use Convert kit and to make a long story short I'm not using half of the features. When I was at Podcast Movement, I went to their booth, explained my situation and the rep show the features I could be using, and show how easy it is to use. With this in mind, I still need to take the time to learn the system. There is no sense spending money on a system that sits dormant. Example of Podcast Lead Magnets Erik K Johnson has 17 Ultimate Podcast Interview Questions David Hooper of Big Podcast has 25 podcast episode templates (bottom of the page) Daniel J Lewis has 20 things you should do before recording every podcast episode (right sidebar) He also has an email list devoted to pointing out great deals at Podcastingdeals.com I have a resource to help you write better Podcast Episodes titles at www.schoolofpodcasting.com/headlines I also have a video series for those thinking of getting into podcasting that walks you through the first few steps at www.schoolofpodcasting.com/babysteps The Question of the Month 28:50 If you've attended any podcast event, was it worth it? If so, why? If not, why not? Please send those in by 8/24/18 go to www.schoolofpodcasting.com/contact if you are emailing them in please put "August Question" in the subject line. Jen and Vernon are fresh from their experience at Podcast Movement 2018 with lots of news to share! After 5 years producing The Social Strategy Podcast, Vernon calls it quits and tells us why. He is also excited to announce the launch of his new podcast, The Space Between! We also learn that there is no shame in pod fading, there is only shame in doing something that no longer inspires you. Podbean recently launched PodAds, and it has a lot of podcasters talking! PodAds was designed to help the indie podcaster monetize their show, and help the local advertiser reach audiences located in specific areas of the United States and the world. It's all very exciting and Jen and Vernon break down how it works, and encourage you to check it out for yourself. Podbean contributed to Rev's FREE Podcasting 101 Guide along with Resonate Recordings, Samson, Podcast Engineering School, and Social Media Rescue. The guide is available on Rev's site--no email required! I am honored to be in such good company, and deeply grateful for all the kind words. In looking back at my 13 years I noticed a pattern: How Podcasting Works Valuable content leads to relationships that lead to opportunities. The key word is VALUABLE content. Then you have to work at relationships, and you need to take advantage of every opportunity. Look back I see how: 6:00 Who are Dave's influences? I was listening to the Dennis Miller Option and he shared some insights into how he feels when he is at a party with "celebrities." If you are new to Dennis Miller, here are some facts from his Wikipedia page. Dennis Miller: Saturday Night Live 1985 to 1991 Dennis Miller show (last seven month ) in 1992 Dennis Miller Show Live 1995- 2002 winning five Emmys for HBO Hosted three-hour radio show on westwood one from 2007 to 2015 He also had shows on CNBC, and has done featured spots on many television shows. He is listed as #21 on the great comedians of all time top 100 chart from Comedy Central This is paraphrased from this show, " As far as being a celebrity, I'm complete "wobbliness." The moment I'm with some people who are famous I can do my little patter. I can make them laugh, and we can have the exchange that they want to have and I want to have. At the end (of the night), if they say, "Here is my number call me," when I get home and I'm alone, I don't tare it up, I keep them and think I'll call them someday. I NEVER get to those calls. I just think they didn't mean it. I would feel like I was cold calling them to sell them encyclopedias. It's a weird thing. " More Common Podcasting Mistakes 16:05 Are you ONLY putting a "jukebox" or "show player" for your podcast? This is where you have one page with all your episodes. For an example see http://becausepodcast.libsyn.com/category/Binge+Listen PROS This makes it easy to go to one page and click listen and let it play all of your episodes. Cons Ther are now show notes on your page. Any shows notes that appear are actually on your media hosts website (and the player is served in what is called an iframe, so technically while this appears on your site, it's like someone cut a hole in your site and you are looking through to the original site). It makes it very hard to share the episode Do You Have Extra Words In Your Podcast Name That Are Not Needed in Apple? In this example, I'm not talking about the title of your episodes but the title of your show. Try to avoid having people "Search for the show in Apple podcasts." If you do, you need to tell them EXACTLY what to search for. EXAMPLE The kookcast is a podcast with a very unique name. I would deeply doubt there are two shows with that name. If you go to Apple podcasts and search for kookcast it comes right up. However, if you enter "The kookcast" even with its SUPER UNIQUE name it does not appear in the top 300 results. From what I can see when you add "The" your show is ranked against all the other shows that have the word "the" in the title and it doesn't appear. So in your case you might need to have them search for your name instead of the name of your show. This assumes you are listed as the author of your show. Is Your Podcast Created by Unkown? If you search for your show in Apple podcasts and it shows the author as "unknown" you can easily fix this by going to the system you use to make your show (for example in Libsyn.com you can go to destinations > edit > Libsyn classic feed and add the author information along with owner, email, categories) and enter the missing information. The listing in apple should updated in about 24 hours. Do You Not Care About Your Android Audience? This one confuses me, but I see it all the time. I go to a podcast website, I see the show. I can click play. When I go to subscribe there is one and only one option. Apple Podcasts. If you are on android, you are out of luck, I hope you figure something out. Check out this article. It shows a map with android being one color and iOs another color. Europe is entirely android. see https://www.moontechnolabs.com/apple-vs-android-comparative-study-2017/ according to an article at statscounter, android currently has 74% of the market in Europe. see http://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/mobile/europe

In Which I Take Issue With Chris Curran Our loyal listeners may have noticed that our opening drumbeat, courtesy of our good friend Chris Curran, features Ralph’s name. But I want to know why Ralph gets top – and only – billing? Is this the Ralph show? I think not. So I issued a challenge to Chris to work my name into a drumbeat. Creatively. Let’s see what we get. Another Apology Last week Ralph apologized to various people and today I have to issue my own apology, to the great nation of the USA. In last week’s episode I mistakenly mentioned the Whopper as being an item you could eat at Mc Donald’s. Travesty! Are there enough mea culpas? I wonder. In Which We Admire Chris Curran After I expressed my demand for a drum track with my name in it, Ralph mentioned something that Chris did with his businesses that was very clever. Chris has a couple of businesses. One is called Podcast Engineering School, which teaches people how to professionally record, mix, master and engineer podcasts. The school is for people who want a career in podcasting. The other is called Podfudge, an agency that provides editing and marketing services to podcasters. Chris had one of his engineering school graduates produce The Podcast Engineering Show, which is Chris’s podcast. The show sounds great, which goes to prove that Chris is churning out qualified professionals who even HE is willing to hire and trust with his own show. He also hires his grads for his editing business. And Ralph thinks that’s pretty smart. It’s a way to market your product (in this case, school) – not by saying how great you are and not by talking about all the wonderful things you do – but by actually showing it. Show Don’t Tell We had an experience a few weeks ago where we went to a business dinner with colleagues, and in the course of the conversation we gave some advice to one of them about how he might improve his Facebook ads. A few days later, we were at a networking meeting with this same colleague. He stood up and told the room that after implementing our advice, he immediately got seven new leads for his business. We didn’t have to tell people that we know what we’re doing. He told them for us. And that’s worth more than any dollar amount you can spend on an ad. I know a woman who knits clothing. And she wears her own clothing. So when she’s out and someone says, “Hey, nice sweater!” She tells them she makes them for a living. It’s a great way to demonstrate that she stands by her own product. When you do a good job for people, when you stand by what you do, then your work will speak for itself. And if other people speak for you, all the better! A Travel Wrapup Last week we talked about our trip, what we spent and how we can budget next time. This week we summarize a Top Ten list of easy ways to save money so you can travel even if you don’t have a big budget. Bring food. Grabbing Mc Donald’s, grabbing a coffee or a donut or a snack can really add up. Eat at your destination but avoid expensive food traps. Bring water. Don’t spend two bucks a bottle at a convenience store when you can spend two bucks a case at the grocery store. Go where the tourists aren’t. Go to a beach town during the winter or the desert in the summer. It may not be your idea of the perfect vacation but you can still get away and do it a whole lot cheaper. Camp. If you’re adventurous, grab a tent and pitch it. Some campgrounds have great amenities like wifi and electricity. Use apps. Hotel apps can help you get really good deals. If you don’t mind the risk, you can get some great deals by just showing up and getting what’s left. Be flexible. Do things that you might ordinarily think you don’t want to do. With the right mindset you can make the best of things you might not have expected to enjoy. Use a credit card with points. Whether you get points that you can use for a purchase later, or cash back that you can use to pay for whatever you charged, take advantage of the opportunity. Find a library. The wifi is free and it’s a great place to work. Plus, if you’re the camping type, you can use the library to work instead of sitting in a tent all day. Hub it. Find one place to stay and travel out from there instead of moving from place to place. You can get much better deals on rooms sometimes when you stay a few weeks or a month. Keep receipts. If you’re working and traveling, you can write off at least part of the trip on your tax return, and that can save you money. Let People Help You We share war stories today about people who insist on doing things themselves. Ralph talks about trying to help our friend Sophia with her website, only to be un-helped by her interfering. To be fair, Ralph volunteered to help and Sophia wanted to make things easier for him – by doing some of them herself. The problem arose when she started doing things she didn’t understand, which got in the way of what Ralph was doing and ended up making everything take a lot longer and be a lot more complicated. In the end, they both could have handled it differently. Ralph by being clear about his role and what he would do, and Sophia by simply letting him do it. But we get it. When someone helps you, you feel a certain responsibility. You’re grateful, and you may feel bad about adding to someone’s workload. If that’s you, and someone has offered to help you, let them! Just find another way to thank them. A few weeks ago we called a colleague in the HVAC business to help us with a furnace problem. We didn’t ask or expect him to do it for free, but he did. Instead of freaking out and worrying about it, we simply bought him and his wife a gift certificate for dinner. People like to help. YOU probably like to help. So let people help you when they can, and then be grateful. Sometimes that’s enough. If you can return the favor, do it. DIY Madness Sophia wanted to be considerate of someone who was helping her so she tried to do things herself. But some people do things because they simply can’t NOT do them. We had a client for a month who micromanaged everything we did with his website, until we finally gave him his money back and told him he wasn’t ready to hire someone. He ended up getting a college kid to do it because he could sit there and point over her shoulder and bark orders. But at what cost? He could have afforded to hire someone. He just refused to. He wanted to control it himself. Except while he was micromanaging his website, he was not out selling. People who do everything themselves risk two consequences. One is doing a thing wrong. Professionals are professionals for a reason. We don’t replace furnaces or fix car engines, we call professionals. We don’t know how to do their job they way they do. We don’t know what we don’t know. The second is the opportunity cost. What are you NOT doing when you’re doing something you could have delegated? Delegating is a skill that more people need to learn. We Want To Eat Sophia’s Cows But that’s an apology for next time. More Things & Stuff If you’re thinking of a career in podcasting, check out Podcast Engineering School. Listen to the Podcast Engineering Show produced by one of the school’s alumni. If you're a podcaster, visit Podfudge for editing and marketing services. Check out our friend Sophia Lemon’s podcast Double Exposure. And her other podcast, Ridiculously Happy People. If you’re in eastern Canada and looking for a photographer, Sophia is one of the best you’ll find.

Today I'm using my new microphone for the first time! Actually it's over 30 years old - a vintage RE20 from the 80's I believe, and courtesy of Marc Johanssen. (join his Facebook group here). Yesterday I recorded session #50 with Roy Stegman using it, too, but that was before I spent time dialing in the settings on my channel strip to make the mic sound tip-top. NEWS: I'm proud to announce that I am now a resident expert (of audio engineering) in the Podcasters' Society! It's a wonderful community founded and facilitated by Daniel J. Lewis, a former guest on this podcast ;) It's a wonderful community for podcasters and producers who have already launched their show(s) and are ready to improve their show(s) big time. It's WAY more helpful than your average Facebook group, and I'm not knocking any podcasting Facebook groups because they are awesome, it's just that Podcasters' Society goes way deeper and wider in so many ways. *As I mentioned in the audio, here's my discount/affiliate link for Podcasters' Society: https://podcasterssociety.com/pes/ NEW GEAR: I purchased a Zoom H6 for on-site recording among other things. I especially like the solid build, the different microphone attachments, and most of all the backup recordings on the L and R which record at 12 db lower than the main recordings to provide a safety net in case there is some distortion on the main L and R channels. I also reflected briefly on Podfest again. Love that conference... It's getting close to Podcast Engineering School which starts online on April 4th. I commented on all the training modules and topics that will be covered. Even if you don't attend the course, these are some areas where you can improve your production value a lot. This week on the It's All Journalism podcast, host Michael O'Connell interviews Chris Curran, a podcast producer and founder of Fractal Recording and the Podcast Engineering School, about what goes into creating a really great sounding podcast.
I'm Chris Curran, and I'm on crusade against horrible sounding podcast audio! In general, podcasters and producers tend to have weak (or non-existent) audio engineering skills. That's where this show can help. By listening to this show every week you will gain an unfair advantage in the world of podcast production. Each week we will talk to a podcast engineer/producer and learn how they're producing podcasts - their equipment, their workflow, and advanced tips. Plus, we have fun ;) Me: Chris Curran, founder of Podcast Engineering School and Fractal Recording. http://podcastengineeringschool.com/ DID YOU KNOW........We exist for the purpose of helping you, so please comment below with any questions or remarks.
