Special Edition of Podcast Insider ft. Paul Colligan In this special edition of Podcast Insider, Todd welcomes longtime friend and podcast industry veteran Paul Colligan. Together, they dive deep into how businesses—small or large, local or global—can leverage podcasting as a powerhouse marketing and sales tool. From identifying the exact goal of your show, to repurposing content for social media, to measuring real ROI (not just downloads), Paul and Todd share proven strategies and case studies that will help any business make podcasting an integral part of its growth plan. Today's Hosts: Todd Cochrane ft. Paul Colligan What Are You Trying To Do With the Show? There's no “wrong” goal—maybe you want to build brand authority, bring in local clients, or expand globally. Just be crystal clear on your specific objective. Paul's Four-Question Framework What do you want the show to do? How will you know it's doing it? Is it doing it? How do we make it better? This simple system keeps you laser-focused on results rather than just cranking out episodes. Niche vs. Broad Podcasting Example: If you only sell Nevada real estate, call it the “Nevada Real Estate Show.” Hyper-local can mean high-quality leads and conversions. Monetizing Without Major Downloads Case study: A financial advisor's show with fewer than 1,000 downloads per episode generated higher-quality leads—converting 1 out of every 3 calls. Interview vs. Solo Formats Learn how JJ Virgin shifted from interview-centric episodes to a solo Q&A style—resulting in better listener retention and less production hassle. Production & Branding Match your show's production level to the story you're trying to tell. “Caveman branding”: Your podcast title and artwork should immediately signal what the show is about. Repurposing Content Turn one Q&A livestream into multiple short podcast episodes, YouTube clips, Instagram Reels, and more—maximizing content reach while minimizing extra work. Choosing the Right Consultant & Tools Avoid the pitfall of “podcast consultants” who overpromise. Seek hosting and measurement solutions (like Blubrry) that have a proven track record and can align with your specific goals. Takeaways Set Clear Goals Before You Launch Whether it's lead generation, brand awareness, or direct revenue, define success metrics from Day One. Don't Obsess Over Downloads High downloads don't always translate into high conversions. Focus instead on engaging the right audience. Leverage Multichannel Repurposing Recording live Q&A or interviews once can yield multiple clips for social media, YouTube, and emails. Vet Your Advisors & Platforms Work with experts who understand your business model—and choose reliable hosting/statistics solutions. Podcasting is the future of content. Are you ready to master it? Join Dan Sullivan, Shannon Waller, and industry veteran Paul Colligan as they dive into the business of podcasting, from where it was to where it's going. With over 20 years of trailblazing experience, Paul shares secrets to podcasting success and the mindsets that separate the amateurs from the pros. Learn how to create a hit show and leverage this booming medium to skyrocket your business influence and growth. Here's some of what you'll learn in this episodeWhat it was like in the early days of podcasting. The factors that led to podcasting becoming what it is today. What entrepreneurs love about podcasting.Dan and Shannon's early experiences with podcasting. How podcasts let you find people who share your mindset and values. The type of people who are plugged into podcasting.Predictions on the future of podcasts. Show Notes: It takes less than five minutes to submit your podcast to Audible for free. And you're in the directory less than 10 minutes later. It's always mindset that stops people from trying something new. The value of the content needs to be understood as greater than its packaging. The best thing about podcasting is the speed of creation. It's easy to tell when a podcaster is following a script. In a good podcast, you don't know what the second question will be until you've asked the first question. If you try to control the experience of a podcast, you lose the authenticity of the end product. Listeners feel like they have a personal relationship with podcasters. Podcasting has had a profound impact on how politicians speak. People now use the podcast standard for judging all public speaking. Podcasts are only popular in countries where they have cell phones. The only problem with new media is when you treat it like old media. Resources: The Gap and the Gain by Dan Sullivan and Ben HardyPodcast: Podcast Payoffs with Dan Sullivan and Gord VickmanPodcast: 10xTalk with Dan Sullivan and Joe PolishPodcast: Shannon Waller's Team SuccessThe Team Success Handbook by Shannon WallerAI As Your Teammate by Evan RyanWho Not How by Dan Sullivan and Ben Hardydescript.comArticle: “Scary Times” Success Manual: How To Be A Leader When Times Get ToughArticle: Your Business Is A Theater Production: Your Back Stage Shouldn't Show On The Front StageThe Positive Focus®Once You're Lucky, Twice You're Good by Sarah Lacy

At Podcast Movement Evolution in LA people kept pitching me, and in a matter of seconds, I was able to tell if this person understood the podcasting market or not. Most did not. TWO TYPES OF PODCAST BUSINESSESMy friend Paul Colligan from the Podcast Partnership said, "There are two types of podcast companies. One that cares about podcasting, and the other that just wants some of that sweet, sweet podcast money." YOU NEED TO SOLVE A PROBLEMIf you want to make money with a podcast, you need to solve a problem. So that can be a product or service, but it can also be that you solve the problem of providing information that is not available anywhere else. THE TING ABOUT THREE YEARSI do need to clarify that I've said it takes three years to build an audience, and that is when people I interviewed for my book Profit From Your Podcast started making notable income. However, it's not the three years that enable them to make money. It is the quality of the content. Don't keep making episodes thinking, "If I can just make it 36 months I can retire." There is some luck and timing involved. NETFLIX CANCELS SHOWSWhy do I think that? Netflix cancels shows. They know everything about us. They know our likes and dislikes, and yet they make shows that we don't watch and get canceled. Why? Maybe it was bad timing or good old luck of the right person finding it and telling two friends...CONCLUSIONSo if you want to make money, you need to solve a problem. Think about everything you buy. Be it clothes, food, netflix, etc it all solves a problem. What problem can you solve?I can help at podcastconsultant.com and you can read my monetization secrets at www.profitfromyourpodcast.com/book

Podcasting 996 - Path To Success Or Early Burnout?

Many podcasters sacrifice the majority of their free time so they can podcast. Some of them seem to love that, while others wonder if they're missing out on what life has to offer. Which are you? You may have seen the news from China on the growing pushback against the “996” way of doing business, where workers to are expected (or required) be productive from 9:00 AM until 9:00 PM six days a week.  While I am in no way trying to conflate the hellish conditions exploited workers around the globe face every day with the “job” of podcasting, I can say that many podcasters do work incredibly long hours.  For many, 996 is just getting started. I know podcasters who are at it 8-12-7 or 10-3-7 kick. For many, that's their choice. I don't presume to know your individual circumstances, so I can't tell you how you should or should not spend your time, even on your podcast. But I can say that if you have a choice, and if you feel like you need to make a choice, it's okay to bug out early on your podcast from time to time. It's OK to take a day off from your podcast when you need it. Heck, it's OK to take the long weekend to do whatever you want. And yes, it's perfectly acceptable to go on vacation and just relax for a week or more. If you want to take a break, and if you can take a break, it's OK to take a break. Podcasting will still be here when you get back. I'd much rather have you in podcasting for the long run than see you burn out too quickly, as far too many would-be podcasters do. Do what's right for you. ----- Boostagram Corner!  Shout-outs in the episode to Paul Colligan and Andrew Clews for their support. Unconscious Bias Training Doesn’t Work!

Barbara Annis and host Paul Colligan kick off this episode with a story about Barbara’s husband, also named Paul, who had a negative experience during an Unconscious Bias training session. Barbara explains that Unconscious Bias does not work, and companies need to stop delivering that kind of training. She says it has a reverse effect on people because: It’s a band-aid approach that has no correlation to learning; It lowers morale; It is a waste of money for companies because there’s no return on investment.   Barbara insists that even the term has negative connotations. The first word, unconscious, is about helplessness, while the second word, bias, evokes blame. She described the work she did with a company where they removed the term Unconscious Bias and replaced it with Blind Spots. It is non-blame and focuses on a-ha moments of discovery, and new insights.   Paul and Barbara discussed the experience that people have in a Gender Intelligence training session where the focus is on Blind Spots. Barbara says that once they realize it’s not about blame, but about building understanding, everything changes. There’s engagement from the start, and it’s relevant to their lives, both professionally and personally. Barbara says it takes the divisiveness out of the conversation.   Barbara described a situation where a large financial services firm faced the largest gender discrimination lawsuit in the history of Wall Street. She says the legal action came on the heels of Unconscious Bias training in the firm, prompting the company to remove UB training from any mention in its culture.   Harvard business review article “Why Diversity Programs Fail”: https://hbr.org/2016/07/why-diversity-programs-fail   Paul reflected on the benefits of a Gender Intelligent conversation around hardwired differences between men and women, and the value each gender brings to the table. He says it’s about answering the questions, “what can we learn about each other, how can we perform better with each other, and what does each style bring to the game that gives us an advantage?   Barbara referred to a quote from Dr. Fernando Flores PhD, a linguistic professor at Berkeley. He said “You can stall or initiate anything through how you use language.” Barbara says it reflects the importance of using language that engages an authentic conversation. It can make it a transformational experience for men and women.   Find the Book “Be Gender Intelligent,” by Barbara Annis and Dr. Keith Merron: https://www.amazon.com/Gender-Intelligence-Breakthrough-Strategies-Increasing/dp/0062307436     Find Barbara’s first book, “Same Words Different Language” here: https://www.amazon.com/Same-Words-Different-Language-Intelligence/dp/0134513274     Are you interested in becoming a Be Gender Intelligent Ambassador? On this episode, Barbara Annis and host Paul Colligan discuss the some of the biggest challenges facing women in leadership positions. The pitfalls, identified through a survey of 2,000 women leaders, were based on two simple questions. What pitfalls they worked to avoid in their careers, and what pitfalls they may have fallen into.  7 Common Themes Were Identified Barbara says the results showed that, no matter where these women leaders lived, or what their career focus was, the same themes just kept popping up, again and again.  Take the free Introductory Program here: courses.genderintelligence.com/courses/introduction-to-e-learning Sign up for the full 7 Pitfalls program here: courses.genderintelligence.com/courses/the-7-pitfalls-for-women-leaders  Barbara and Paul discussed the themes and how they impact women in leadership positions. The top 7 pitfalls are: Making Bold Requests Self-Promotion Being Hard On Themselves The Loyalty Trap Assigned to Grunt Work Networking Negotiations Barbara shared a story about a group of male and female executives were all in the running for the CEO role at a company in Silicon Valley. She described a key gender difference that led to one of the male executives landing the position, in sharp contrast with the approach of his female counterparts. Barbara also reflected on the differences between men and women in terms of networking. Barbara says she’s convinced it all comes down to being strategic in one’s approach. Paul suggested that organizations could benefit by making sure male employees also understand these pitfalls for women. He believes this mutual insight into gender differences would allow men and women to worth together to overcome each of their pitfalls, allowing them to build on each other’s strengths. Barbara agreed and describing how some of her corporate clients came to that same conclusion. She believes this kind of acknowledgement and understanding of gender differences and the pitfalls of both men and women should begin in high school or earlier. Barbara told the story of a young female engineer who reached out to her after the engineer had hired a highly successful male career coach, only to discover that he constantly made her cry. In his mind, his confrontation style would motivate her, but instead it made her feel less confident. The female engineer later discovered that she was the first women he had ever coached. Barbara convinced her to fire the coach, and she recommended finding a new one who ‘had her back,’ and used a more positive approach in coaching. Tax Resolution Success Show
How To Prepare for the Affects of Covid-19 on Tax Resolution – Paul Colligan interviews Michael Rozbruch

Tax Resolution Success Show

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 3, 2020 25:42

Paul Colligan has switched seats with Michael for this episode of the podcast to ask some very important questions about the future of the tax resolution industry. [1:15] How do tax resolution practitioners get ready when we don’t have an idea what’s going to happen in the world of taxes over the next 12 months? Michael has experienced three major downturns during his 22 years in the business, and in his experience the years following a downturn are major opportunities for tax resolution. [2:40] Pre Covid-19, there were 13.2 million people already identified by the IRS as owing taxes. There will probably be another 10 to 20 million more collection cases coming up over the next few years. [3:15] We are going to see the largest influx of payroll taxes cases coming down the pipe very soon. The IRS is the only creditor in the world that can pierce the corporate veil without a court order, and this may lead to an additional Trust Fund recovery penalty tax case for every payroll case. [5:00] There were 30 million people that were planning to file on April 15th, but the filing date keeps getting pushed back. What’s going to happen to those people who won’t have the money to pay their taxes once it finally comes due? [5:55] The IRS isn’t closed; they’ve just reduced their activities, but when July 15th comes around and everything goes back to business as usual, all hell is going to break loose. [7:10] Michael teaches his members to never take their foot off the marketing gas pedal. When things get slow that’s when you should double down on your marketing to keep your pipeline full. When the floodgates open people are going to be turning online for solutions and if they can’t find you, they can’t retain you. [8:40] It’s more important than ever to have an online presence right now. Now is also the time to negotiate rates with radio companies as Michael hasn’t seen advertising rates this low for 18 years. Radio stations have inventory to sell and will be looking for ways to raise revenue so incredible deals will be available over the next couple of months. [11:10] The government is hungry and they’re going to be closing in soon. The tax resolution specialists that embrace marketing and make it the overarching umbrella for everything they do are the ones who are going to profit. [11:45] Most CPAs and enrolled agents believe that if they went to the best school that it guarantees success, but it doesn’t. In today’s world, marketing is what guarantees success. [12:35] If you’re in business, you’re in sales whether you realize it or not. Many people have a mindset issue around their business and marketing. They believe their deliverables are primary, but they have to come secondary to the marketing if they want to create wealth and become rich. [13:15] One of the major opportunities for tax resolution specialists lies in calling their past business clients and helping them understand what assistance and relief programs are available to them right now. It’s also the perfect time to help your clients do some financial planning in reverse and put them into the best situation they can be to minimize their tax settlement. There are a number of tips and tricks that you can do right now with your clients because you have the luxury of time. [17:05] There are a number of opportunities for accountants to help their clients get what amounts to essentially free money. [18:30] The SBA/PPE is not a long-term business strategy. If you haven’t done it yet the window of opportunity is closing. [19:55] The effects of the 2008 recession on Michael’s business lasted for three years. The same is likely to happen this time around. IRS problems have the habit of percolating over time. It may take some time for them to find you, but eventually they will and you need to be prepared. [21:40] Michael is telling people that focus on tax preparation work to begin looking for additional streams of income. Tax preparation was already commodified before Covid-19, and if it’s your only stream of revenue you need to expand your offerings now. [22:50] Michael helps licensed professionals start a tax resolution business from scratch, or if they already have a business, how to grow it to the level they’ve been hoping to achieve. He teaches the whole business of tax resolution from generating leads to closing clients and delivering the service.   Mentioned in this episode: Michael Rozbruch's Tax & Business Solutions Academy

We are in the middle of some strange times right now but even with the challenges we’ve seen so far, we’ve also seen several people connect better with their audiences. [1:55] There have been several unique opportunities that have emerged since the advent of COVID-19, and Ben happens to be right in the middle of a number of rapidly changing environments. [3:30] With all the changes to the regulatory environment, bookkeepers have been extremely busy helping business owners figure it all out. Everybody who has been waiting to do their books suddenly has an urgent need to get it all done as quickly as possible. [5:00] For bookkeeping professionals that are established, there has never in the history of time been a better time to be a bookkeeping professional. The word of the day in the industry is survive and just do what you can one day at a time. [5:30] We saw a similar cycle 12 years ago with businesses that weren’t prepared, or that weren’t really businesses. They were the ones that didn’t make it through. The most important thing you can focus on right now is how you can help your clients and do whatever you can to help them survive. [6:05] The urgency of tax day has been replaced by the urgency of getting your books in order to secure a loan. What we’ve seen so far hasn’t been as much of a stimulus as it was just enough to allow small businesses to survive. The only way that many businesses have been able to do that is by getting the benefits, and that means bookkeepers are instrumental. [7:40] There is no COVID-19 version of your books, they are either done or not done. Not having the information on hand means your business is leaving free money on the table. [8:05] Paul tells the story of trying to make Mother’s Day special and how different restaurants handled the lockdown. We hear a lot about the economic downturn but plenty of businesses are seeing a flood of customers that they may or may not be able to handle. [10:35] When it comes to economic turbulence, some types of businesses will thrive and some will suffer, but any business that isn’t prepared is going to run into major problems. [11:00] Ben always tries to have at least six months of operating expenses in his business’s savings account. If you have a team right now, they are nervous and there is no such thing as over-communicating and no such thing as giving away too much information. If you are secure, your people need to know that. [12:15] You should work with your clients in the same way. People can typically deal with bad news, what they can’t deal with is unknowns. Having a fight you know about is way better than not having any idea about what is going to happen. [13:15] Take care of the things that you can control. You may not know what is going to happen with schools in the fall, but you can get your books done and find out what your finances look like. [14:05] Everybody is worried, but being in a position to give someone answers can be very valuable. The bookkeeping industry is a recession-resistant industry and bookkeepers are in a position to really help business owners get through the current situation. When we do come through to the other side, those businesses are going to remember who was there for them. [16:40] Right now is a great time to start a bookkeeping business. There are no guarantees, but this may be the absolute best time to be marketing bookkeeping to businesses that desperately need the service. [18:30] It’s also a great time to be advertising since ad costs are low. The one caveat is that hard tactics are out and building relationships is in. It’s the perfect time for bookkeepers to focus on the top of the funnel. [20:00] Bookkeeper Business Launch will give you the fundamentals you need to start your bookkeeping business, but if you want to go far, it’s important to surround yourself with people on the same journey as you. The mastermind and community are huge assets to bookkeepers just getting started. [23:05] Bookkeeper Business Launch experienced its highest period of enrollment ever because more people are coming to the realization that being in control of their income puts them in control of their destiny. [24:00] Some bookkeepers have lost clients or have had to reduce their service fees, but that’s been offset by picking up new clients all over the place. Bookkeepers have to be flexible and creative enough to adjust to what’s happening in the world. [26:20] Life gives to the givers and takes from the takers. Are you a giver or a taker? Your clients need you more than ever so it’s a great time to start giving.

Since 1993, Alex Mandossian has generated nearly 417 million dollars in sales and profits for his marketing students, clients, and joint venture partners. His marketing strategies helped convert his personal annual income in 2001 into his monthly income by 2003. Then by 2006, this number became his hourly income. He also generated 1.2 million dollars in less than 29 minutes during a product launch.  He is an author and speaker who has appeared on stage with Tony Robbins, Suze Orman, two presidents, and other influential people. He is the CEO of MarketingOnline.com where he helps business owners and serial entrepreneurs grow their skill sets, mindsets, and balance sheets.  Alex knows marketing and shares a lot of great info today. He is also the host of the All Selling Aside Podcast. Alex’s marketing passion and knowledge is contagious, but we also explore why he started his podcast and how it has benefitted his already rock star business status.  Show Notes [04:06] Alex was born in Hollywood and lived in California most of his life. He did take an eight year stent in Manhattan where he cut his teeth on marketing. [04:38] In 1995, he started consulting online. He is a BG (before Google) marketer. He's had a lot of success and made a lot of money. [05:27] In 1991, he marketed Tony Robbins Personal Power. He worked for a media company that represented similar clients, and he got a behind the scenes look into their successes and failures.  [06:38] He moved to Marin County and launched an online product in 2000. He sold a how-to course called Marketing with Postcards for $247. [07:26] He continued to create more products. He built a funnel and had a SaaS product.  [07:59] He also wrote a course with Paul Colligan of Podcast Secrets and jointly published the The Business Podcasting Bible in 2007. [08:15] All of this taught Alex about the importance of repurposing content.  [08:50] He then launched his All Selling Aside Podcast in 2018. [10:02] The single biggest mistake that Alex has seen is people not choosing who to lose with their target audience. You have to let people go before letting people in. Tell your audience who you are not for.  [11:06] Tightly target your audience.  [13:11] Alex learned to tell people what he believes in instead of having an about page. His friend Roy Williams taught his this.  [16:36] If your beliefs are in alignment, you will always have a match. Knowing your beliefs are better than core values, because they are yours.  [18:26] Alex believes that seeding through storytelling is the new selling. [20:29] Alex speaks overseas and trains people overseas in digital marketing. He supports these emerging nations.  [21:45] His podcast is his legacy to get all of his stories out there. He uses an editorial calendar and does several episodes at a time.  [22:39] He has got tens of thousands of downloads. He looks more professional. He loves the quality, the audio, and how professional it looks. He will also probably repurpose the content into a book at some time.  [24:15] The podcast allows him to chronicle his stories, and people love them. He didn't realize that he could get a $100,000 client from a podcast, but he did about a month ago.  [25:09] His life has changed from the podcast. He is even going to bump up to two episodes a week. [26:56] A podcast is so much more intimate than the written word.  [27:55] Alex defines success for his podcast as never missing a week as long as he is recording.  [31:04] Alex's parents were teachers along with a lot of his family. Alex has learned from his family to become an effective teacher one listener at a time and clearly focusing on one listener.  [34:19] Alex always tells his audience what to expect in the next episode and gives them the title to it.  [36:14] Alex doesn't ask for a rating and review, he asks listeners to rate and share a takeaway from the show.  [41:33] Alex uses spreadsheets to keep himself organized. He has a title column and a story column and a call to action. He prepares his shows in advance and knows exactly what he is going to do.  [42:59] Planning and preparation make life less stressful.  [44:35] When Alex gets an idea, he just puts it in his iPhone memo app. [46:36] To learn more about Alex and his podcast, check out the notes on All Selling Aside.  [47:46] Darrell's takeaways: Follow the platinum rule. Do unto others what they want to be done. Choose who to lose. Tell people who you are not for. Then tell them who you are for. People hate to be sold, but they love to buy. Trust is to be experienced, not expressed. Creating a legacy with a podcast and being consistent. Are You Watching The Magician's Hands?

A quick glimpse behind the WHY of this funnel… On today's episode Russell goes on a mini tour of his new office and podcasts from two conference rooms and the kitchen. He talks about how you need to watch a magician's hands to figure out what he's doing, and how that relates to being a marketer. Here are some of the cool things to listen for in this episode: What it means to be a magician in marketing. Why Russell buys other people's products that he doesn't need, and why you should buy his Marketing In Your Car MP3 player, even if you don't need it. And why it's good to grow a business organically, but it's better to push it along faster by buying ads. So listen below to find out why you need to be looking at a magicians hands instead of getting distracted by what he wants you to see. ---Transcript--- What's up everybody, this is Russell, welcome to Marketing In Your Car. Now this is a special episode because I'm not in my car. In fact, I'm at the brand new office. We moved in this week and it's insanely cool and I'm not only in the office, I'm in an actual conference room, which is the first thing I've done in this conference room is actually talk on this podcast. I'm looking out and everybody is working. We all have standing and sitting desks. So everybody out here working standing and sitting. So exciting. Anyway, if you haven't seen yet, I've been Snapchatting and I'll probably Facebook Live Friday. Friday we get the big Clickfunnels sign in the office, which looks so cool. So as soon as that's here I'll Facebook Live this whole place so you guys can see it. You can see the bookshelf and everything. What's cool, Monday and Tuesday we had a certification event here in Boise. We were supposed to do it here in the office initially, but we didn't think we were going to get the office done in time, so we moved it back to a hotel. Then Tuesday, at certification I make everyone do a hack-a-thon, which they stay up  all night building funnels. Part of the cult-ture that we're trying to do is you need to get crap done, you just pull an all nighter and just get it done. So we taught them that and they did it. And then on Tuesday they went and presented all their funnels and everything and we gave away awards and it was cool. Tuesday morning I woke up like, man these guys have been killing themselves. How cool would be if they actually got to come to the office. So we chartered a bus, had the bus drive to downtown Boise, pick them up and bring them back. And now they're……. Anyway, they came to the office last night and it was so much fun to have everyone here and showing off the new stuff. People were like, “Is that really your bookshelf? Are those all your books?” And I'm like, “Yeah, I'm kind of a nerd. Sorry about that.” Anyway, it was so much fun. So now, today we're here. This is the first day we'll actually work the whole day. Everybody's here and it's exciting. One big fear I have is we have our FHAT event coming up Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday next week in the big conference room which is amazing. But it's got echo. I don't know if you hear echo in here. This is the conference room and it's kind of echo in here as well. We have a sound engineer coming to try to figure out how to put up paneling and stuff so we won't have those issues. But the problem is it's like 2 to 4 weeks to get those things fixed. So that kind of stresses me out a little bit on that side. Hopefully we get some of it figured out. We've got people coming and they're going to be hanging up sound panels and things like that in the conference room. Anyway, someone just came in the conference room so I'm going to walk out here. Now I'm going into the kitchen. The kitchen also has got a lot of echo in here as well. But we designed this because we do a lot of videos in the kitchen, so we made it a really nice kitchen so we can do videos and stuff in here. So it should be pretty office. So now I'm wandering. So fun to wander around the office, now I'm in the conference room. So anyway, I wish you guys could see what I'm doing, probably more interesting than hearing me talk about it. But it's so exciting. So what I want to talk about today, yesterday the Marketing In Your Car free MP3 player offer, we were paying affiliates $20 to give away a free MP3 player, and I think it ended last night at midnight. It's been fun watching a lot of our affiliates promote it and then seeing people's feedback. Tim Castleman, one of my buddies, he's been promoting it. He's like, “Just go buy it, you guys. Why are you not buying it?” and people are commenting why they're not buying it. It made me laugh so hard. These are all people trying to learn marketing. And they're trying to figure this whole thing out. They're studying, learning, following Tim, following me, following people and they're like, “that offer didn't make sense to me. I don't really want an MP3 player. I need to subscribe for free on iTunes.” All these things, all these reasons why they wouldn't buy. It made me laugh because we've sold a lot of them. I think we've sold, we're almost at 4 thousand sold, which is cool. What we're finding is for every single person who's buying an MP3 player, probably 5 or 6 people are subscribing to the podcast, even if they're not buying. So if you watch, I don't know if you guys are watching, but if you go to iTunes right now, and you go to the business section, we've been in the top ten ever since this thing has launched. The business section is hard to get in the top ten. Tony Robins is not in the top ten. Eric Ward is not in the top ten. All these legends are not in the top ten. Neil Patel is not in the top ten, we've been in the top ten for the last 2 or 3 weeks now. And it's like, I want, since you guys are my best people. You're hanging out, you're here listening, I want to reveal, show the curtain, behind the scenes of what's happening. You know how they say, magicians are doing a trick, but he's distracting you with stuff so you don't see what's actually happening, so you don't see his hands move when he's doing whatever that thing is that makes the trick possible. So he's doing misdirection stuff and leading you places and stuff like that. With marketing, it's kind of fun, my job. Most businesses is, it's like you're doing marketing, selling your product. Whereas, I'm doing marketing, selling my stuff. But for those who are watching, I'm hoping you are watching. Watching my hands, watching what the magician is actually doing because that's the most valuable lesson. Me giving my MP3 player, pre-loaded episodes is kind of a cool little thing, but why did I do that. Why am I doing that? What's the magician actually doing and watching that. I always tell people, I buy everybody's products. Usually I do not go through most of the products, but I'm buying because I want to see what the magicians are doing. What do they learn? If you saw the stuff I'm buying. You'd be like, “Russell, why are you buying another weight loss course?” and I'm like, “Because the weight loss dudes are really good at funnels.” “Why are you buying a thing on stocks? You don't even know what the stock market is?” I'm like, “I know, I have no idea how to do stocks. I don't even want to know how to do stocks. But the stock guys are really good at funnels, so I want to watch what they're doing.” I want to see what the magician is doing. So for those who are listening and those who are paying attention, and I hope you guys are paying attention, is watch these processes. Don't say, “I didn't buy Russell's MP3 player because I don't want an MP3 player. I'd never listen to it anyway.” Dude there's a lesson here. I'm not just doing these things for fun. I'm creating things and testing things and if they're working, you'll see me keep pushing them and keep pushing them. I look at right now, our podcast has grown insanely over the last little bit. We're in the top ten, we're consistently in the top ten, which is amazing. We're getting tons of, I mean tens of thousands of downloads a day, which is amazing. And it's because these things we're doing, if you're not watching, if you're not looking you will miss it. It was kind of cool, I did a podcast interview last week with Paul Colligan, who's the podcasting guy and he'll be, I think it goes live to day. And Paul is someone who's watching the magician. He messaged me like, “Dude, I've seen your podcast funnel, I gotta know what and why.” It was really cool. A really cool podcast with him, kind of explaining. All of his followers are podcasters. Podcasters are out there and they're trying to create good content to organically grow. And I'm like, “Organic growth is good, but it's hard.” I did a podcast every day for 3 years. We had 300+ episodes while I was organically growing it, it was good, we got followers, we got traction, but it wasn't until I created something that I could stimulate with paid ads that it grew dramatically. So for you guys, looking at that, look I can go on a blog all day long, but if I can't stimulate with paid ads, man that's a long time. Same with podcasting or whatever it is for you. But for this funnel, for the one you guys went through, a lot of you guys to get here. That was the vehicle, was the podcasting funnel. And it was a way for me to be able to pay for ads. And he, Paul basically was like, “There's nobody that can do this. You're the only person that can pay for subscribers profitably.” I'm like, “Yeah, because of the model.” Anyway, I hoping you guys again, are watching the magician's hand. Because prior to that we'd try to grow Marketing In Your Car and what we were doing is we were buying Facebook ads, trying to get people to subscribe. I'd ask John, “How many subscribers did we get from the Facebook ads?” And he's like, “I have no idea. There's no way to track it through iTunes.” He was like, “I'm basically just crossing my fingers and hoping that somebody subscribes.” We have no way to track it and test it. We're just dumping money at it and crossing our fingers. That's a horrible way to do business, stupidest thing in the world. That's what branding guys do. That's what companies that are backed by VC cash do. They just burn cash and they're stupid. Funnel hackers like us, we're smarter. We're looking at the ROI and it's like, I had to create this thing to be able to create the ROI. So what's cool about it, right now we're driving traffic through these funnels. We're paying affiliates $20 to give away a free MP3 player. But we know our metrics and we're profitable on the front end. I think we're close to about $30, might be a little lower than that. Somewhere around $30 we're making. And we're spending $20 to affiliates, but our ads are making about $10 – 15 to sell an MP3 player. If you look at that, we pay for the ads, we pay affiliates, get the MP3 player, we're profitable so we actually make a little money there. Not a lot, but enough to cover our costs. Then after we've covered those costs, like I said, a big percentage of people come to the page, never buy the MP3 player, but then subscribe to the podcast. And everyone who's, again iTunes doesn't give us the best numbers possible. But based on my guestimations, for every single person that's subscribing to, or that's buying the MP3 player, we're getting 4 or 5 people that are subscribing to the podcast as well. So I'm paying for that growth profitably. It doesn't cost me anything. So anyway, I just wanted to kind of lay that out for the guys who are paying attention and just thinking through that. Because organic is good, but if I could stimulate that with paid and be profitable with it, that's great. That's how I build a company fast. That's how I do it without VC cash and all the other crap we've been told you need to do to build a company. You don't if you're smart, the market will back you. They'll cover for you.  That's the magic of funnel hacking, what we all do. With that said, you guys. I appreciate you. I'm going to bounce. Get back to work and probably do some more podcasts from the office, find different cool locations and go from there. Thanks everybody. Talk to you guys soon.

On this episode of Rhodes to Success, Jessica Rhodes interviews Paul Colligan who is a YouTube expert, the Director of Content Marketing for InstantCustomer.com, and CEO of Colligan.com. Paul hosts The Podcast Report, and on today's show discusses twitter bombing, the importance of getting listed on New and Noteworthy, and how the podcasting conversation is moving away from tech and toward content.   Main Questions Asked: -       What do mean when you say, “It's not a massive play but it's a deep one?” -       Talk about ‘Twitter bombing.' -       Do new podcasters need to worry about New and Noteworthy? -       What are the best things you see podcasters doing?   Key Lessons Learned: -       Podcasting is new media, so you don't have to try and fit it into an old media format. -       The conversation is moving away from tech to content. -       A lot of people's main goal is to be all over iTunes; however, there is also Stitcher, and TuneIn, so your goal should be to be everywhere.   “It's not a massive play but it's a deep one” -       People think that the revenue in podcasting is downloads x CPM, but chasing downloads is not as smart as going niche. -       The more niche your audience is, the better you are going to be able to serve them. If you are doing it right, you will be able to make more money simply via downloads. -       As a podcaster, you want to bring your audience products and services they are looking for. -       When you have a deeper audience, they are more likely to act on the hosts' recommendations in purchasing products. -       It is better to be on someone's weekly ‘must listen' list than on someone's top 100 podcast list.   Twitter Bombing -       Because the only metric people care about is downloads, people are cheating the download game by Twitter bombing. -       Twitter bombers register hundreds of Twitter accounts and use popular and trending hashtags to trick people into clicking and downloading a podcast. -       An example of a Twitter bomb is “New song by Justin Bieber, click here! [link] ” The link goes to a podcast, which when clicked will count as a download.   New and Noteworthy -       Getting listed on New and Noteworthy will defiantly drive traffic to your show, but you need to ask yourself, “Where is New and Noteworthy on the list of things I should do?” -       If you have a show and get more than a dozen downloads, you will probably hit New and Noteworthy. That exposure might bring you some downloads, but there are things you can do that will bring you more. -       New and Noteworthy is not the normal path for normal people when finding podcasts. -       Most podcast listeners hear about shows from recommendations rather than searching New and Noteworthy listing. -       Do people listening to your show care about what you have to say, or do they care that you are listed on New and Noteworthy? -       When it comes to the New and Noteworthy algorithm, ‘subscribers over the last 24 hours' seems to make the most impact on getting listed.   Do you need 3-4 podcasts to launch? -       No. You don't need to have 3-4 shows before you go public. -       People tend to listen to the most recent episode, so any content loaded prior to that will have significantly less downloads. Therefore, you are more likely to get more downloads if you release episodes individually.   The music in today's episode was written by The Danger Os and produced by Nick Palmer.
