Today, Dave and Jim start off by looking at the motivational forces of a podcaster. "I think you need to be about 55% passion so that you have enough, "I MUST do this, and 45% logic helps you then steer it in the right direction." You need both for success. Also, maybe NOT start a podcast. JOIN THE SCHOOL OF PODCASTING Join the School of Podcasting worry-free using the coupon code " coach " and save 20%. Today we are going to talk a little about Podcast SEO - (Search Engine Optimization) There are types of players that media hosts provide that are often called: Show Player (instead of an episode player) Podcast Juke Box Binge Box There are WordPress plugins like Simple Podcast Press and Fuse Box but I'm also talking about the players you get from our media host. Especially one that provides multiple episodes (which is what we are primarily focused on today). Those players are in what is known as an "iframe." The bottom line as while that player looks like it's on my website, it's actually from my media host (Libsyn). I'm not an "anti-sow player" but I am "anti - the only player on a website is the show player." Why? As those players only appear on your site, you get almost zero Google Juice (if not zero) from that type of player. Getting More SEO and Google Love For Your Podcast While it is tempting to have one "Set it and forget it" type of player, what I recommend in addition to that type of player is to treat every episode like a blog post. The blog post attracts Google. Google sends people to your website, and because they stay longer (hopefully because they are listening) which leads Google to think your content is really good and sends more traffic to you. But doesn't this then require more work? Yes. Yes, it does. Do you want to be found in Google? You have to do the work. I Just Want You To Make Informed Decisions My goal is to make sure you understand the consequences of your choices so you can make good choices. One thing you can do to grow a podcast substantially faster is to COPY others that have done it…. I’m a fan of copying and stealing. Not maliciously of course, but the concept of modeling and adapting stuff. I’ve done it all my life. Podcasting is no different, look at what is working then see how you can spin off a similar concept that works. Today, I’ve done one. Guess and do it. Find out if it works for you :) MY CHALLENGE. Take ONE of these ideas and test it out next episode or new few episodes. Then Tag me on IG @Luisryandiaz so I can give you a shout out! “Don’t ask. Demand it.
Feedback From Previous Show Randal Black is an educator and heard our episode where we revealed some things that didn't go quite right. Randall has a saying that he learned from a Fortune Cookie, "Failure is feedback, and feedback is the breakfast of champions."Check out Randall at www.randallblack.com Sponsor: Podcasts Guests A great way to grow your audience is to be interviewed on other podcasts (as they have podcast listeners). Many podcasters love to boost their network by doing an interview show, but maybe you're having a hard time finding guests. PodcastGuests.com helps you find guests for your podcasts for free PodcastGuests.com will feature your podcast to its more than 4,000 users to find qualified guests that meet your requirements Podcastsguests.com helps you be featured on other shows and helps you find guests for your show. Sign up at PodcastGuests.com/sop Podcast SEO with Transcripts Many people feel that if they put a transcript of your show as your blog you have found the easy way to create "show notes." This is often spurred on by a John Mueller (John Mueller - Senior Webmaster Trends Analyst - Google ) stating, "So having some kind of textual information on that page helps us as well, so that we can actually rank that page appropriately. Then when someone brought up transcripts he said, "If you have a transcription of the podcast, that’s even better, because then all of that information is available for us to actually index." Source. An article on Seach Engine People's website stated that "After transcribing all their audio content, the radio show This American Life (TAL) found that 6.68% of search traffic is attributable to transcripts" So who do they do this? Each transcript is published on a separate web page that is linked to the main episode page (see example). Read full report Two more studies found that pages that added transcripts earned on average 16% more revenue than those without; meanwhile, Youtube videos that added captions gained 7.32% more views overall. If transcripts are hard to read, then this can increase your bounce rate. A bounce rate is when someone comes to one page on your site and then leaves. Google can see this and (it was thought) to hurt your Google Rankings. However, in an article from Search Engine Journal from Gillam Hunter, it stated, "Don’t worry, despite the “professional opinion” of many SEO cowboys, bounce rate isn’t part of Google’s algorithm. No, having a low bounce rate won’t give you “ranking benefits.” In that same article, it stats that one way to boost your rankings is through better copywriting. So the question is a transcript better copywriting? I guess it depends on your current copy. For me, we don't write like we talk and we don't talk like we write so when I start to read a word for word transcription my mind gets stressed and I leave. What do you do in that situation? I've love to hear 888-563-3228 If you want to have transcriptions on your site, but somewhat put that "backstage" there is a cool plugin called Simple Podcast Press that allows you to copy and paste your transcripts and yet have then only appear when a website visitors clicks on them. He refers to them as Clutter-Free Transcripts, and if I was going to implement the transcripts, I would probably use this plugin. I already use it on my Ask the Podcast Coach website Transcriptions Tools Rev.com If you don't mind paying $1/monute rev.com has great quality (a human is doing the transcription service) Temi.com Temi is $6 an hour (or 10 cents a minute) and for a robot, not half bad. I've used it, and if you have the time to proof it a bit it's cool. I liked that you can enter the name of the speakers, and export as a word doc. You can also listen back at faster speeds. Reportex.io Reportext.io is an interesting twist. They sync the transcript and the audio. When you delete the word out the transcript it deletes it out of the audio. This works for REALLY obvious mistakes, but not for micro edits that need a surgeon's hands. For four hours of work, you are looking at over $53. You can test it for free. When I downloaded the text file, the formatting was pretty bad for time stamps. For me (as you can see) I write a blog post for my podcast (So I don't really need a transcript). But I had zero show notes and wanted a way to make them, Temi would be an economical way (assuming I had the time to tweak it) to get show notes. Smooth Business Growth – 15 Minutes Of Pure Marketing Strategies Proven To Move The Needle
Hani Mourra is a dad, softwarepreneur, and the founder of the Repurpose.io, a software designed to help content creators automatically publish their Podcasts and Facebook Lives to all major media platforms and grow their audience faster. He’s also the CEO and founder of Simple Podcast Press Plugin, a company that specializes in online software for content creators. Main Questions Asked: What is Repurpose.io and how does it help content creators? Are content creators nervous about repurposing content? What does Simple Podcast Press do? What are some mistakes that podcasters do? How difficult is it to get started with Simple Podcast Press? Key Lessons Learned: Repurpose.io Repurpose is software that is meant to automate the creation of content in different formats and publishing it to a variety of platforms. You can create one piece of content like a Facebook Live and then create a set of rules that upload the video to YouTube, convert the video to audio and then upload it to Libsyn so you can use it as a podcast. Content creators are cautious about reusing their content but people consume content in different ways. People have different learning styles and having your content in a variety of formats is a good way to reach a larger audience. Repurpose doesn’t ask you to change your workflow, it takes over after you hit the publish button and does everything automatically. Repurpose also comes with templates for when you are converting audio to video, that makes uploading a podcast to YouTube easy. It also adds a Call To Action link in the first two lines of the description so it’s always visible when the episode is viewed on YouTube. Simple Podcast Press Simple Podcast Press started out as a tool that focused on automating publishing your podcast onto your WordPress site. The focus later became the player itself and the buttons that encourage the user to take action. It’s customizable for whatever platforms and actions you need and also encourages the listener to opt in to your email list. It also has an option for custom buttons that allow you to give away custom content that is specific to that episode. Another great feature is the clickable timestamps, they make it very easy for the listener to zero in on exactly what they want and creates a better listener experience. When it comes to the opt in box, it’s important to offer something that is short, actionable, and valuable. Podcasting Many podcasters edit too much, focus more on the content than the presentation of the episode. Ask for feedback and provide the content that your listeners are asking for. Email the segment of your list that opted in for the content that makes sense to them, don’t blast your whole list if it’s a topic that doesn’t interest them. Recycle your episodes with tools like MeetEdgar and Social Jukebox. Send people to your site to listen, don’t send them a link to the mp3. Don’t neglect Facebook, Facebook videos often have more views than the same video on YouTube. Podcasting is not usually the core of your business, you should focus on creating good content without spending hours on manually posting it on various platforms. Simple Video Press Simple Video Press is a WordPress plugin that brings in all your YouTube videos and creates blog posts for each video. It also incorporates the comments on the video automatically. Simple Social Press does essentially the same thing but for Facebook Live videos. Final Tips If you are a content creator, save yourself some time by using the suite of tools that Hani has built. Don’t be afraid to repurpose and recycle your content in different formats. Thank you for listening! If you enjoyed this podcast, please subscribe and leave a 5-star rating and review in iTunes! I was listening to the Book Feed the Muscle Burn the Fat and he relayed the story of a man at a Tony Robbins event (Tony is a major Business Guru). He told Tony that he had done EVERYTHING to grow his audience. Since he had tried everything Tony asked him, "Tell me the last 100 things you've tried." To this, the man answered, "Well I haven't tried 100 things." Tony then stated, "Then tell me the last 50 things." The man replied, "I haven't tried 50 things" Tony replied, "Then tell me the last 10 things you've tried." It turned out the man had tried about four things. We think we've tried everything, but there are more ways to connect with your audience, many of them that require just a little bit of time to setup up some technology. Today we need to look at ourselves in the mirror and ask, "Have I really done everything I can to promote my show, connect with my audience, and increase my reach? I think if we look deep into our hearts we know there is more. Here Is The Low Hanging Fruit Social media: You should be promoting your show on the social media channels. There are plugins such as social warfare. There are automation tools like Social Jukebox. Media hosts like Spreaker and Blubrry will publish your audio file as a video on YouTube. Spreaker will tweet out about your episode. Blubrry will create a sample of your show to tweet out and paste on Facebook. Libsyn will post to Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, iHeart Radio, LinkedIn, Blogger, Tumblr. Podcast Directories: There are four main directories you should be listed in. Apple Podcasts (formerly iTunes), Stitcher, TuneIn, and Google Play Music. Do You Have Subscribe Buttons On Your Site? One way to keep your numbers going up is to get people to subscribe. This includes buttons for ANDROID. Subscribeonandroid.com is a free site from blubrry where you can point people to that site (using your RSS feed) and if they don't have any apps to subscribe they will be prompted to download one. My friend Daniel J Lewis has a great plugin call Social Subscribe and Follow that creates amazing looking subscribe buttons Do You Have Share Buttons on Your Website? There are plugins (again I love social Warfare) that make it easy for your audience to tweet out your show. There are players like the coolcast player, the Smart Podcast Player, the Simple Podcast Press player. Don't get hung up too much on players as 80% of people are listening on on portable devices. With that said, can people share your episodes from their phone? Local Meetups I've had three people sign up for the School of Podcasting and I got to be on TV all from meeting local podcasters in Ohio. If you don't have a local meetup, do what I did. I created one. In the words of my friend Glenn "the Geek" Hebert, it's not who you know, it's who knows you. Check it out at www.meetup.com I run a local podcasters group for Northeast Ohio www.neohiopodcasters.com Reach Out to Other Similar Podcasts Some of my best friends are my "Competition." Daniel J. Lewis from the Audacity to Podcast, Ray Ortega who does the Podcasters Studio, Mike Dell works for Blubrry and does the Podcast Help Desk, there are others as well. Reach out to them and see if they'd like to co-host an episode or a segment, or be interviewed, or... or ... or.. Remember there really isn't any competition in podcasting. They can listen to you on Monday and your competition on another day of the week. It's not like radio where you are both on at the exact same time. Reach out to Businesses? If I did a show about weddings, I would reach out to every dress shop in the area and see if I could put some CDs at the check out for exchange for a link to their site, or a mention in the show. Go Record People at Events You can get a portable recorder for as little as $99 for the Zoom H1 or just use your phone. Then give these people your business card, and tell them they will be on a future episode. You do have business cards right? There are TONS of ideas Speaking of Daniel and Ray, we do a show together called the Podcasters Roundtable and we did an episode pointing out ways to promote your show (how to grow your audience from 100s to 1000s). The point here is you can't think about these ideas, you have to do them. In a recent (not safe for work) video Gary Vaynerchuck explained that he would Google his topic and connect every blog/podcast about his topic. He said 1 in every 347 will write your back, and that is better than zero. You Need to Quit Reading, Quit Watching, Quit Listening, and Start Doing If you're thinking of getting into podcasting, you can read articles, get confused cause some say to launch with 15 episodes, and some say (like me) it doesn't matter. Some say New and Noteworthy is the goal, and others (like me) say it's not that great. You can't improve what you don't start. How NOT to Make Money In Podcasting She's back! Jessica Kupferman runs the JKM Agency has a fun story today. In the same way that you learn new skills when you start podcasting, you will learn new skills when you take on a sponsor. You will need to learn how to read an advertisement. It's not as easy at it sounds. If you just read the bullet points, you can be boring. If you stray too far from the bullet points, you may forget to hit all the talking points. Today she talks about someone who had to redo an advertisement three times. The lesson is, read all the paperwork that comes with the sponsor. Know what you HAVE To say, know what you are ALLOWED to say, and then try to say it in an entertaining fashion. If you mess up, you don't get paid for that sponsor. For more information about getting a sponsor for your show check out Jessica at http://www.jkmagency.com Because of My Podcast Story Jessica Rhodes of Internet Connections had a live panel on her latest episodes. No matter what you do to repurpose your content, there's always more you can do. I know, that might sound a little depressing or overwhelming (how much more can you possibly do, right?), but the good news is that there is a lot of automation happening in this space and tools that are coming out to streamline this process. Which is why I was super excited to have Hani Mourra back on the podcast this week. If you haven't listened to my previous episode with Hani, you can listen to that here. Hani is the creator of the Simple Podcast Press plugin as well as a couple other WordPress plugins. Hani has launched a new SaaS platform called Repurpose.io. Repurpose does exactly what you think it would do, it repurposes your content. Not all of your content, but for those of you who create audio and video content, you're going to want to jump into this as soon as possible. Repurpose is currently by invitation only, but not from the exclusive sense. The first founders will get access in February (yes, I'm super excited to be one of those founders). Hani wants to make sure everything is working smoothly and the initial adopters are up and running (smart process). Questions I asked Hani What have you been up to since our last interview? (we had to catch up a little bit) For the listeners who may not be familiar with you, can you share a little about your business and what your WordPress plugins are? Let's talk about Repurpose.io. What made you decide to launch a web app for this as opposed to a WordPress plugin? How has creating this product differed from creating a WordPress plugin? How did you decide on pricing for your platform? Can you explain what Repurpose.io is? Where can people find out more about Repurpose.io? What You're Going to Learn Why Hani decided to go with a web app as opposed to a WordPress plugin How he's decided which features to launch Repurpose with Why he considers Repurpose a platform as opposed to a web app Which integrations Repurpose will launch with Why Hani considers himself an 'automation freak' When you can get access to Repurpose.io (and where) To say I'm excited about Repurpose.io would be an understatement. I have always loved repurposing content, this just gives me a way to automate it and measure which channels give me the best ROI. Mike Dell from podcasthelpdesk.com and was saying he thinks they drag out the stories too long. Using Two Instances of Skype on the Same machine 8:00 Live365 Live Streaming System 09:26 Live365 has partnered with Blubrry to create podcast2radio.com which is $89 a month. Dave explains how he has had a streaming station and doesn't get that much traffic. He is paying around $15 a month. Dave us getting around 70 listeners a month. It depends on what format you stream, and how many total listeners you can have at one time. So with Live365 are paying for unlimited listeners, and when you first start off you don't need it (this will obviously depend on your genre, and your audience). My peak listener number was 7 at the same time. You can list your station in iTunes Radio, Window Media Player, TuneIn, and other sites to be in directories (just like podcast). Dave feels they may be a little early (and that they need to taylor this to podcasting). Jason Bryant said he blocked over 300 ads on their site (that's a bit crazy) What is Going to be the Big Thing In 2016 For Podcasters? 20:19 There are tons of people creating custom players for podcasters. Clammr has already stepped up their game. Bookmarks are pretty cool. Do players add to downloads? Probably not but they add to the experience. Dave uses Simple Podcast Press on this site. It would be nice if there was a player or app that made it easy to "take notes" in the app There may be a bit of a divide between the NPR type podcasts because they are getting all the press because they have friends on the press. There may be a bit of divide between pro and amateur podcasters How Do Get Money and Conversions with Podcasting? 26:50 CPM (pay per thousand downloads) is a horrible way to monetize a podcast. Dave explains to an "Internet Marketer" the ins and outs of podcasting and how it is a "Value for Value" model. You need to develop a relationship with your audience. It takes time to develop a relationship (just like you do with your friends). Any sales is all about relationships. I interview Glenn the Geek on the School of Podcasting who is making a living using Sponsors without selling CPM. Hear that episode here. Directories Vs Apps Sticher/Spreaker/iTunes Confusion 33:25 Dave and Jim help explain the differences between these tools, and the difference between media hosting, directories, and "podcatching" apps. In some cases (Spreaker) a directory is also a host. Do I Need and Expensive Microphone? 37:40 No, you can get the Audio Technica 2100 for around $50, or package it with a pop filter and stand for around $100 a BestPodcastinerGear.com (Dave's Amazon Site) Some microphone's don't work for everyone. It depends on the timbre of your voice. My Laptop Does Not Have a Line Out/Line In - Mix Minus Issue 44:18 Dave uses the Griffin imic to add a soundcard that has a line in and out. Using Chrome Book To Podcast: What Kind of Computer Do I Need 46:35 It would depend the application you would be using the record. Should Non-Tech People Be Podcasting? 53:00 This is a great question. If they are afraid of technology and don't want to learn, then they need to outsource the technology end. This is not their strength, and unless they are willing to wade through the learning curve, then they should hand it off. If they don't have the budget to hand it off, then they need to learn how to do it on their own. Blab Community Tired of Podcasters Complaining About Audio Quality 56:55 It seems Blab.im users are tired of hearing podcasters talk about the importance of getting a good microphone. While it's nice to set the tone and fell of the show, you can get away without it. In regards to it sounding under water, its because you are using the streaming version of the audio which has been compressed for streaming (NOTE: This episode is using the audio from blab.im) 4:20 Resources for Production Music. Check out Audio Jungle for more check out podcastresources.com Jim uploads any music to YouTube to see if it will get flagged. 7:43 Dave talks about not getting distracted by the chat room. We also talk about getting in trouble with YouTube an how they block videos. It seems to get hyper focused if monetization features are turned on. SquareSpace and Podcasting? 14:55 Mike from 2980network.com wants to know what are our thoughts on SquareSpace? We find that people who start using this platform end up wanting to do the "Cool" stuff that people on WordPress are doing (and they can't_. It sounds like we need to go check them out and see how they have improved. It sounds like if you don't mind the inconvenience of adding the redirect for a third party stat service like Blubrry (use the coupon code sopfree) to get better stats. Their RSS feed is not robust. 18;54 Mike Dell from Podcast Help Desk chimes in on SquareSpace. Clammr Numbers 26:14 Do clammr plays mean downloads? Not really. If someone clicks on the "Hear More" button that will count as a download, but I'm not sure if those will show up in your download stats. Simple Podcast Press makes it easy to create clammrs on your website. 27:50 Overcast.fm will turn time stamps into click able links. See if you type 27:50 its a clickable link that takes you to the 27:50 mark in my show. COOL. You don't need any special formatting. They are also making charts based on most tweeted. 29:55 Clammr updates coming to make things easier. Proofing Your Own Stuff 40:48 Here are some tips to help proof your own stuff. Give it a few days before editing it so you cal listen/read with fresh ears and eyes. Print out the show notes and read them out loud Grammarly is a great tool (its a spell check/grammar checker on steroids) Read things backwords. This takes the context and you'll find typos. 45:42 Hemmingway is a tool that grades your text and can convert to html. Podcasting News 51:28 Rivet Radio. Adds Podcasting (the top podcasts) to their app. This is also available on Android. Welcome to Nightvale is now available as a book. Great Uses of Podcasting 55:02 Jim tells of a manufacturer of Cheerleader Uniforms that might start a podcast.
Hani is a dad of two beautiful girls, an online marketing coach, and software engineer who has helped produce hundreds of videos and podcasts for his clients. He is also the creator of Simple Video Press and Simple Podcast Press, two WordPress plugins that automate publishing of videos and podcasts to your WordPress site. He is extremely passionate about creating software tools to help entrepreneurs generate more leads and grow their businesses online.
Today we have a few tools to peak at. One allows you to record your podcast or go live, the other allows you to add your Blab.im sessions to your Wordpress website, Ray Edwards will teach you how to write better pages, and the last one allows you to book guests. Spreaker Studio For Windows and Mac Spreaker has been around a while, and if you are looking to do live streaming this is a great platform. They also are great if you don't want to go live. Their new Spreaker Studio software enables them to move away from the Web Based version they had before that relied on flash technology (which was not compatible with iPads, iPhones, etc). They have had Spreaker Studio apps for a while (also impressive) and now there are desktop versions to go along. Connect More Than One USB Microphone With EASE. This has been a problem that wasn't easy to solve in the past. Now if you have multiple hosts with two USB microphones you can easily connect up to three USB microphones into ONE computer. It's pretty amazing and easy to setup. It also integrates with Skype. This takes adding some additional software, but it takes just a few minutes and it worked like a charm. The best part is there is plenty of documentation so you don't have to guess what to do. You can create playlists (great for people doing podcasts of music), you can fade from one song to the next, there are buttons that you can assign sound effects to (again with plenty of documentation and tutorials). If you are person who does their show live, you also have a chat system right in the software. The only thing you need is a Spreaker account to get it to fly.You can get a free month of spreaker media hosting using the coupon code sopfree. Simple Live Press Blab Automation Tool Right now Blab.im is HOT. This is a FREE platform that makes it super easy to create a live show and have guests pop in and out. It's new and in beta, but it has promise. Hani from Simple Podcast Press (a great plugin for podcasters looking to build their e-mail list) has come up with an easy way to have your videos from Blab.im import into your Wordpress site. You can set it so you have to approve them before they are put on your website or have them automatically posted. You can add buttons again to grow your email list, your followers on blab, and more. The best thing is Hani. He is open to suggestions as the plugin has been out less than a week. My request would be to allow me to replace the blab.im video with a YouTube version later (to build my views on YouTube). For more information go to www.simplelivepress.com Here is a quick video I created showing off how easy it is. Bookly Appointlet Plugin There are tons of services like Appointlet, and Schedule Once for managing bookings. Most of these have a monthly fee (around $10). I discovered the Bookly plugin and it is super powerful. It ties in with you Google Calendar, and you can control every. This includes the color, your services, your staff, you payment options, your hours of availability, holidays and more. Here is a quick video Ray Edward Copyrighting Course I'm a HUGE Ray Edwards fan, and he is giving away a ton of free content on how to write better text on your blog. This could be to grow your business, or to grow your audience. He is a MASTER, and I always walk away feeling smarter after listening to him. To check out Ray's free tutorials go to www.schoolofpodcasting.com/rayedwards Launching With Multiple Episodes Does Not Automatically Equal Downloads There are people on the Internet who are saying "If you launch with 8 episodes (or 3, or 5) you get 8 downloads when someone subscribes. This is absolutely false. Once a person is subscribed, they need to go into the Podcasts App (or iTunes or Overcast.fm) and manually download you back catalog. As podcasting gets hotter and hotter, there will be more people jumping into the space that may not giving great advice. Interview With Hanah From PodClear/Blab.im Speaking of Blab, they recently purchased Podclear.com and today we get some behind the scenes insight into Blab from Hanah. Many people have dreams and skills that could support those dreams. But they don’t always know it. In this episode of Chasing Dreams, Aimee J. is chatting with someone whose dreams took shape as he put his skills to work. Hani Mourra is a software engineer who somewhat stumbled into the internet by helping a friend get some videos onto YouTube. The friend began to see great traffic on his videos and encouraged Hani to consider making a business out of what he was doing, somehow. Listen in as Hani shares his story with Aimee. There’s no doubt you’ll find something encouraging to prompt you on your own dream chasing journey. TWEET: Small steps, from one #dream to another. Hear Hani Mourra’s story on this episode Many times the dream takes shape through the things you learn on the way. Hani Mourra spent many years blogging about video tips on his site www.EasyOnlineVideoTips.com. It was in those years of blogging that Hani learned a lot about how to assess the needs of a market, hone ideas for the market, and developing a project for a trial launch in that market. It was a great time of learning that equipped him for the path ahead. As he began thinking through what he’d learned and started applying it to an idea (Simple Video Press) the excitement started to build. The dream was taking shape. Hear how Hani sees those years of trial and error and learning, and how he put them into practice in practical ways - on this episode of Chasing Dreams. Taking action: where life comes to the dream. Hani’s ideas existed only in his head. If they were going to come to life and benefit people like he thought they would, Hani had to take action. That’s when the dream began to come to life. Just like childbirth there’s a lot of struggle to bring the idea to life, a lot of pain in learning how to get it out of your head and into reality. But as Hani started working on his Simple Video Press plugin it did begin to take shape. What is your dream? Why aren’t you getting started, taking action to make it a reality? Listening to this episode may be dangerous: If you’re not ready to take action, that is. Hani never had a dream to build a software empire. You learn by doing and trying. That’s what Hani believes because that’s what he experienced. As he started trying to create his first plugin, he learned how to adapt the skills he was learning to new ideas and projects. One after another they came together to produce a software company that’s helping many video and podcast producers. His dream was vague and undefined at first but as he took action, small step at a time, his dream began to take shape. What can you move to move in the area of your interests, to get started working on something you enjoy? Hani’s story could give you some insight into what those things might be, so be sure to listen. TWEET: Many times the #dream takes shape through the things you learn on the way The Chasing Dreams Podcast is all about you and your dreams. I was lucky enough to get to hang out with Jeff Bradburry of the Teachercast network at Podcast MidAtlantic. Jeff is helping teachers utilize technology (like Podcasting) in the classroom. I first met Jeff on a Podcaster's Roundtable and was amazed as he is doing everything LIVE. The one thing that impresses me with Jeff is he truly understands his audience. These (in some cases) are people who have struggled with technology, and are now looking to embrace it and improve the lives of students. Jeff understands that a teacher may call "audio on a podcast (no RSS feed" a "podcast" (when by definition it's not) but instead of splitting hairs, he stays focused on the goal (inspiring learning in the classroom with technology). Go Have a Baby or Three Jeff was at an event when his wife went into labor. She was three months early, and Jeff had his hold booth setup. As you can see to the right. Jeff's booth is first class (GO BIG OR GO HOME). So you might be just a little nervous about running out the door and leaving all your equipment behind. His audience knew Jeff's situation (pregnant with triplets) and told him over and over "Go, we've got you covered" (and they did). His audience trusts Jeff, and in this case he trusted his equipment to his audience. Go Inspire a Conference: Your Show Started THIS... Jeff had gone to a conference and spoke about it, and it turns out his audience was listening. They were so inspired by the idea they started an edcamp in their city. So there was no event, Jeff starts a podcast and BOOM now there is an event where there was none. Not only was their an event but a group of people enjoying it, and improving their lives. Why? Because Jeff started a podcast. Being Seen as an Expert Jeff has worked with some major brands (Microsoft, Pearson) and Jeff always bring his "A game" and takes advantage of every opportunity that comes his way and that has lead to him getting a new job and allowing him to move to a better location for his new (larger) family. I love it when the good guys win. Go check out Jeff at www.teachercast.net Voxer App Turn Your Phone Into a Walkie Talkie Jeff did a quick demo for me at Podcast Midatlantic and I was surprised how addicting Voxer is a free app that allows you to create a group "chat" where you can share audio, video, and text. It's pretty cool and I could see people making private chats for their listeners. Dave reflects on his trip to Podcast Mid Atlantic and talk about enjoying having people create good content that pushes you to do better. Competition is a godo thing when it pushes you to be better. He explains how there really are "original" ideas. The case in point the iPad is simply an update of the Walkman. Live Does Not Equal Good Dave talks about the new show Best Time Ever and while it was LIVE, it was all over the place. He had a woman who was singing a hit from 1979 along with extreme pogo sticking, with a stunt in the middle. Who is the audience for this stuff? Hani Mourra - Simple Podcast Press Hani Mourra really enjoyes developing tools to help people marketing their business online. His passion is to help people generate more traffic to their site through various strategies he has used that work in today's market. Hani acknowledges that it isn't easy, but there are several things people can do in order to get the ball rolling. Two of the main WordPress plugins Hani developed are called Simple Video Press and Simple Podcast Press. The idea is that when you publish a video or podcast on various plugins, it automatically adds those episodes or videos to your website. Each of the videos or podcasts has a specially designed email optin box below the episodes or videos. Hani recommends picking the tools that work for you. You don't need a lot of plugins because that will slow your website down. However, the tools you do choose, make sure that they actually help shave time off your operating procedures. Hani loves technology, video, podcasting and has a lot of fun spending time in this industry. What Hani found when he talks with people is that they just want the solution and they want things that help them to minimize the time they have to allocate to creating content. Keep it simple and that's a big reason why he included "Simple" in the name. I like taking complex problems and making them simple. -Hani Mourra Hani Mourra Likes to Keep Things Simple Hani is a big beleiver in picking tools that you need and are helpful to your business. The more time you have to be creative, the more likely you are to develop better content. Hani kept simple in his mind throughout the entire development process. Hani has an engineering background and so he enjoys solving problems by taking complex problems, breaking them down and finding a simple solution with a user-friendly interface that makes it easy for any user to perform tasks in a shorter amount of time. Hani started a blog called easyonlinevideotips.com so that people that visited the site understood the solution was going to be easy. Hani made it so the user would add a minimal amount of information and then the software would do the rest. Hani is a big Apple fan as a simple user interface. His a minimalist. He doesn't even put a case on his iPhone because he doesn't like the look and feel of having the case on the phone. Podcast sponsored by: When it comes to podcasting I have a few personal rules after the basics are met (best audio quality and valuable content come first). We all know I'm a huge geek about the visual side of things so after having had my podcast for a while I knew I wanted to put a better looking player on my individual episodes than the default player from PowerPress (no offense to them, they pretty much keep everything going with their plugin, but the players are a little dull). Enter the Simple Podcast Press by Hani Mourra. Could it be more Awesome? :-) Yes, that's the fantastic player that you're looking at below the image in the post. What I love most about the Simple Podcast Press is that it's geared towards marketing with your podcast. It's not just a good looking player, it takes everything one step further by adding buttons, opt-ins and reviews on your site. What you might not know is that before launching Simple Podcast Press Hani created and released Simple Video Press (which I've also purchased but haven't gone through my site yet to swap out videos. I'll get to that later this summer, so stay tuned for videos on that as well). [tweet_box]"I love that feeling of solving problems." @hanimourra http://thewpchick.com/63[/tweet_box] Questions I asked Hani: 1) What's your backstory? (What brought you to WordPress Plugin development) 2) What are your thoughts about the premium WordPress Plugin space? 3) What have been some of the challenges you faced when launching the plugin? 4) How did you decide to do a podcast plugin? 5) Do you have your own podcast? 6) What were some of the features that people wanted that surprised you? (for the plugin) We went a little sideways in our discussion about podcasting and what you can do with it (which I think you'll enjoy as well), which is one of the things I love most about these interviews (letting the conversation flow organically and see where it takes you). Hani also shared what his plans are for launching his upcoming podcast and why he wants to do an audio and video podcast (something I want to add to my podcast as well, may as well record the video at the same time, right? More on that front coming soon too). What You're Going to Learn 1) How to keep podcasting SIMPLE 2) Why you should focus on content 3) Why you still need PowerPress (by Blubrry) 4) The different ways you can pull your reviews into your site with Simple Podcast Press 5) How Hani's initial focus for the plugin was automation... then his customers dictated what they really wanted 6) How you can grow your subscriber list with the Simple Podcast Press [tweet_box]"I just listened to what people wanted and gave them that. They do have support (I had to use them once when my downloads stopped working for no reason). Podcasts.com kind of dodged the question to a yes/no question. Podcasts.com came on the scene recently so I sent them: 1. How do you make money (business plan). A: Some of the podcasts have ads on their searchable directory index page on Podcasts.com page. Those ads pay for the costs. 2. Do you change my mp3 file name? 3. Do you change my mp3 ID# tags? 4. Do you change the bit rate of my show (stereo/mono/bit rate) A: 2 – 4 – Those are all part of our management portal. These are yes no questions, and when you don’t answer them I assume the worst. 5. Do you supply an RSS redirect in the event I don’t want to use your service. A: We do not at this time. 6. Is there a way to show my rss feed from my website (that I use to manage my show) instead of the RSS feed from podcasts.com A: You could create a redirect URL on your site which you can give out and have it just redirect to ours. Notice the tech support person is trying to get me to redirect my traffic to their website. (Or its a person who doesn’t understand podcasting, or they don’t want to display anything from your website). Check it out here Simple Podcast Press - Grow Your List and Subscriptions [7:25] Today we interview Hani Mourra the man behind the Simple Podcast Press plugin for Wordpress. We all want podcasting to be easy, we want to grow our audience, we want subscribers, we want promotion, and this tool does all of that with a 2 minute install. You can add links to itunes, stitcher, soundcloud, as well as a download button. You can also have button for people to subscribe to your email list (so if you're using someone like Aweber or Mail Chimp). With these tools you can boost your subscribers and your email list. Another great feature is the ability to make clickable tweets with a few mouse clicks. This can make it super easy for your audience to share your show. The plugin will also help create easy to remember links like www.schoolofpodcasting.com/427 that link to the episode (again making it simple to share) Lastly if provides the latest reviews from iTunes right in your dashboard. I was worried as I am already using PowerPress (for my player) and Pretty link (for my easy to remember links). The plugin does not have any conflicts with these plugins and in the case of PowerPress can easily switch the player on your website and all the back catalog. This means by installing this plugin you can an email sign up on every episode. That's pretty cool when you are someone like me who has over 400 episodes. The best part is if you're not happy with it, you can get a refund as there is a 30 day money back guarantee Want a Coupon For the School of Podcasting?
