When Mark Batterson was 22 years old, his church plant in Chicago failed. “It was embarrassing. It was discouraging. It was a little confusing, to be honest,” Mark said. However, God used that closed door to redirect Mark to start a church plant in Washington, D.C.—this time with a very different outcome. Today, he's pastored National Community Church for nearly 30 years and launched Kingdom-focused businesses to help people in his city.  “I want people to hear my heart here that prayer is not outlining our agenda to God. It's about God outlining his agenda to us.”Hear Mark share his story and more Biblical wisdom on this episode of GPS: God. People. Here's a simple 5-step method I created to help stay calm, present, and grounded when you're facing uncertainty and bracing for the unknown. In this episode, I'm diving into a mindset strategy that helped me through a really intense week filled with anxiety and uncertainty. When life feels overwhelming and fear creeps in, it's so important to have a simple plan to stay grounded. I'll walk you through the exact five steps I used to calm my mind, stay present, and truly enjoy the moments that mattered most. If you ever find yourself stuck in a cycle of worry, these steps will help you find your way back to peace. Action Plan: 1 - Acknowledge your awareness: Notice when your mind is jumping ahead to worst-case scenarios — awareness gives you back your power. 2 - Set a clear intention: Decide to stay grounded and present, even when challenges are looming. 3 - Focus on your breath: Take three deep, intentional breaths to signal to your body that it's safe. 4 - Tune into your senses: Name three things you can see, hear, or feel to anchor yourself to the present moment. 5 - Redirect your thoughts: Practice gratitude, flip a negative "what if" into a positive one, and envision something you're excited about. In this episode, Cindy Esliger talks about choosing to opt out of toxic dynamics in the workplace. We don't need to continue trying to win the approval of toxic coworkers. We can disengage and break free from the harmful patterns. It isn't about giving up, it's an act of self-protection and empowerment. Cindy explains how to identify toxic dynamics and provides guidance on how to step back and reclaim our control and confidence. To help us see the truth behind motives, Cindy identifies five common tactics used to camouflage toxic behavior: 1) Manipulation, 2) Gaslighting, 3) Devaluing others, 4) Entitlement, and 5) Dismissiveness. These behaviors are often subtle and cumulative. Over time, they play into our self-doubt and create a toxic atmosphere. To turn our attention away from them and back to what we can control, Cindy offers these steps: 1) Reframe our role, 2) Detach emotionally, and 3) Reclaim our narrative. In the effort to disengage, toxic people can have extreme reactions, which make the effort more challenging. Cindy offers four ways to stay grounded while reclaiming our control: 1) Stop trying to change them, 2) Hold boundaries, 3) Stop feeding the cycle, and 4) Redirect energy. Once we have successfully disengaged from the toxic workplace scenario, we can focus on healing and growth. While toxic workplaces are draining and demoralizing, they don't have to hold us hostage. This episode shows how to get our power back. Resources discussed in this episode:Guide to Disengaging from Toxic Workplace DynamicsAstronomic AudioConfidence Collective—Contact Cindy Esliger Career Confidence Coaching: website | instagram | facebook | linkedin | email

Dr Justin Coulson's Happy Families

Play Episode Listen Later May 14, 2025 19:46 Transcription Available

We take a deep dive into the increasingly visible “furry” phenomenon among young people. What is it? Why is it happening? And most importantly, how should parents respond? From identity development to mental health concerns, online risks, and compassionate parenting strategies, this episode tackles the hard questions with clarity and care. KEY POINTS: Furries are individuals who adopt animal identities ("fursonas"), often through costumes, behaviours, or online personas. The trend is increasingly visible in schools and online, often linked with broader identity and mental health issues. Studies show high rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation among those identifying as furries. The furry community may offer temporary escape and affirmation, but it often delays deeper emotional work. Online spaces often amplify and affirm furriness, making digital monitoring essential. Role-play is a central component, particularly attractive to neurodiverse young people seeking to manage anxiety. Strong family relationships, boundaries, and compassionate but clear guidance are essential. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: "If I have a child who wants to bark at me, I want to tell them how much I miss hearing their voice." – Kylie Coulson RESOURCES MENTIONED: University of Waikato Study (2018) – A key study exploring furry identity and mental health (link provided in episode show notes). HappyFamilies.com.au – Parenting resources and support. FurScience.net—Referenced with caution due to affirmation bias. ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Set clear, compassionate boundaries – Affirm your child's humanity while being loving and firm. Monitor digital activity – Block furry content and supervise online platforms where furry communities gather. Redirect creativity – Encourage healthy outlets like art, drama, and team sports. Strengthen real-world relationships – Help children build social connections offline. Seek professional support – Engage a qualified psychologist who explores root causes, not just symptoms. Respond with compassion, not punishment – Let your child know they are deeply loved and seen, even when their behaviour is difficult. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Yuri Bukhenik returns to the stand for continued cross-examination by defense attorney Alan Jackson, followed by redirect examination by special prosecutor Hank Brennan. Sgt. Bukhenik acknowledges the inversion but maintains that the footage accurately represents the events.  Text Message Controversy: Bukhenik faces intense questioning regarding inappropriate text messages sent by former Trooper Michael Proctor, including derogatory remarks about Karen Read. The defense scrutinizes Bukhenik's supervision and response to these messages. Brian Higgins' Involvement: The defense explores the nature of the relationship between Karen Read and ATF agent Brian Higgins, examining flirtatious text exchanges and suggesting potential motives rooted in jealousy. Bukhenik testifies that he found no evidence indicating animosity between Higgins and John O'Keefe. Evidence Handling and Timeline Discrepancies: Questions arise about the timing and documentation of evidence collection, including the seizure of Read's SUV and the discovery of taillight fragments. The defense highlights inconsistencies in reports and timestamps.  Redirect Examination: Prosecutor Hank Brennan seeks to reinforce the integrity of the investigation, addressing the defense's claims and emphasizing the procedures followed during evidence collection and analysis.

In this solo episode, Lisa goes deep on something we all wrestle with: worry. When the world feels out of control—between the headlines, politics, money stress, and everything in between—it's easy to fall into the loop of fear and overthinking. But Lisa's here to remind us: you might not control what's happening around you, but you always have a choice in how you respond. This one's part personal story, part tough love, and a whole lot of practical wisdom. What You'll Hear in This Episode:Worry feels productive. It's not. That hamster wheel of “what if” is just mental noise. Lisa breaks down why worry isn'tthe same as taking action—and how it's often just our brain trying to feel safe in unsafe times. Worry is a habit—and habits can be broken. Lisa opens up about a time when she was drowning in debt and anxiety, and how she realized that worry had become her go-to emotional addiction. She shares what it took to finally stop feeding it. Your focus = your reality. Whether it's your bank account, your health, or the state of the world—what you pay attention to expands. Lisa talks about reclaiming your focus and using it to build possibility instead of more fear. A 4-step practice to shift out of worry: Catch the pattern: Notice when you're looping or commiserating—and stop indulging it.Ask better questions: Is today actually any different than yesterday? Has something real happened, or is your brain spinning stories?Redirect your energy: Focus on what you do want or what brings you a sense of peace, even if it's something small.Take aligned action—if it's needed: If you can do something, do it. If not? Let it go.Self-parenting through discomfort. Breaking the worry cycle means feeling some things you've probably been avoiding. Lisa explains how to ride the wave instead of letting it run your life. You don't have to do it alone. If your nervous system is fried and your thoughts are running the show, it might be time to get support. Lisa shares how coaching and mentorship can shift everything—fast. You don't have to wait for the chaos to stop to feel peace. Choose how you want to feel now. Psalm 42:1As the deer pants for the water brooks,So pants my soul for You, O God.Charles Spurgeon wrote:"As man can bear hunger much longer than he can bear thirst, he may continue without food for days but not without drink. So the psalmist mentions the thirstiest creature and the most ardent of the natural passions. He does not say, 'So I long for my former grandeur,' or, 'So I long for my friend,' but, 'So I long for you, God.' His soul had only one longing, one thirst; and every power and every passion had united itself to that one desire."In this episode, I will share how Psalm 42 and this quote by Spurgeon helped redirect my soul back to the One Thirst above all others. Thirst for God is my answer, my primary goal, and my primary need. All the other thirsts take a lesser place.I will end the episode with another redirecting quote by C.S. Lewis, which inspired the song “Draw Me Near”—which I'll play for you. If you would like to support this podcast with a monthly or one-time donation, thank you!https://www.sherriyoungward.com/supportTo find out about upcoming gatherings and new projects, please join my email list atwww.sherriyoungward.com

Overthinking is a waste of time, so why do we do it? Some decisions do require extra thought, but most of the thousands of decisions we make each day can be made more easily. It's easy to get stuck in an overthinking loop that causes stress, costs money, and keeps you from accessing your creativity. If you're ready to start moving past overthinking and actually take action, the 5-step process I'm sharing in this episode is for you. Even if overthinking has been a long-standing pattern for you, it is possible to make quicker decisions more confidently. In this episode, you will learn about: How the same traits that make you successful can also lead you to overthink. What I learned about overthinking in my early PR agency days. How information overload can get you stuck in overthinking. The pressures of past successes and how they often enable overthinking. How to know when it's actually time to pivot and move on (or not). The biggest reason you need to stop saying yes to everything. A reminder that you can't control all the variables to success. The 80% confidence rule and how it can help you take action faster. An exercise you can do today to help you create a reality check.   Today's episode is brought to you by LinkedVA. In this Think Thursday episode, Molly dives into the neuroscience of fear, mindset shifts, and the power of helping others to create a positive ripple effect on both our lives and mental well-being. She explores how shifting from fear to action through acts of generosity and kindness can help you step out of emotional paralysis and into purposeful living. Drawing on neuroscience and real-world studies, Molly shows that helping others isn't just a good thing—it's biologically rewarding and transformative for your brain and life.Key Topics Covered:Understanding Fear and Its Impact:Molly discusses how fear and uncertainty can trigger the brain's fight-or-flight response, paralyzing us emotionally and mentally. She highlights how this response, while useful in physical danger, often leads to negative coping mechanisms like doomscrolling or turning to alcohol. The Neuroscience of Helping:A 2016 neuroimaging study revealed that acts of generosity activate the brain's pleasure centers, leading to a “helper's high” through the release of endorphins, dopamine, and oxytocin. Molly emphasizes that this isn't just a feel-good moment—it builds long-term satisfaction and resilience.Becoming the Helper:Inspired by Mr. Rogers' famous quote about “looking for the helpers,” Molly takes this concept a step further by asking listeners how they can become helpers themselves. By contributing to others, we not only uplift those around us but also improve our own mental health.Actionable Takeaways:Acknowledge fear as a natural, biological response and recognize that it's not permanent.Redirect fear-driven inaction into small, purposeful acts of generosity.Understand that helping others can create lasting changes in your mindset, with potential to reduce reliance on negative coping behaviors like drinking.Identify one small act of kindness you can perform today and notice how it impacts your mood and motivation.Notable Quotes:“The good news is that fear isn't a permanent state, and we can shift our brains out of fear by engaging that prefrontal cortex.”“When we help others, we don't just improve their lives; we improve our own.”“Helping others is biologically rewarding. It's one of the most natural ways to feel better and shift out of emotional paralysis.”Supporting Research:2016 Neuroimaging Study on Generosity2009 Life Satisfaction Study: Acts of Kindness and Well-beingEpisode Resources:Join Our Facebook Community: Alcohol Minimalists: Change Your Alcohol HabitsWant to Dive Deeper?Check out Molly's e-book Alcohol Truths and learn more about balancing your relationship with alcohol using neuroscience and practical strategies. Are we focusing on the heart of the matter and making an impact? [03:18] Have you ever questioned why someone hasn't taken your free advice? Could it be because they didn't pay for it? [04:01] When people pay, they pay attention. Allow these people to become paying clients. [05:01] One thing I implemented was 15 minute Spotlight Coaching conversations to allow people to be paying clients on a small scale. [06:59] Learn language to set boundaries when you feel like you're being taken advantage of or you know that if the client pays there will be more impact. [08:03] "I'd love to make sure that we have time to dive into what we had planned to go through today." Then redirect the conversation. [09:40] Story can be a huge time suck. [12:00] "That sounds like a really interesting story, but let's shift gears because we do have a limited amount of time today and talk about how we might work together to reach our goals." [13:01] The importance of having a pre-frame for the call. "It's been so great learning about you now let's jump into what we talked about earlier." [14:17] It's really about setting boundaries. You can change your language depending on how you know the person. [15:18] "I love our chats, but because we have to talk about our business, maybe we can set up another time to catch up." Keep your boundaries clear. [16:52] Say everything in a really kind way. Be patient and let the person transition. [17:27] Use selective amnesia and move on in the conversation.   For more actionable sales tips, download the FREE Closing The Sale Ebook.   Find Nikki: Nikki Rausch nikki@yoursalesmaven.com Facebook | Twitter | LinkedIn | Instagram Sales Maven Society Work With Nikki Discussion To download free Resources from Nikki: www.yoursalesmaven.com/maven

Visit us at shapedbydog.com    Counter Surfing and other naughty dog behavior problems can feel unsolvable, but they don't have to be! I'm sharing an easy 3-step formula every dog owner needs to know for what to do. The challenges any one of us could have with our dogs will vary with our dog's age and experiences. But no matter if we have a puppy, rescue dog, or a dog who has been in our family for years, the MRI approach can be applied to any problem that needs to be solved. And don't worry, I'm not really suggesting an MRI, but it's a handy and memorable acronym to put into action, and it's all in this episode for you.   In this episode, you'll hear:   • How to apply the 3-step formula to solve any naughty dog behavior or challenge. • The ABC's (Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence) of dog behavior and training. • A real-life example of using MRI to stop counter surfing with puppy Waffles. • Everything you need to know to Manage, Redirect, Intensify (MRI) • The importance of redirecting your dog's attention onto more appropriate behaviors. • How to ‘Manage The Don't, Intensify The Do' in your training for better long-term results. • My approach to turn common dog behavior challenges into training opportunities. • How to use games like ItsYerChoice, Hot Zone, Reinforcement Zone. • How to be intentional about using all the things that are really reinforcing to your dog when your focus is on intensifying the ‘do.'   Learn How To Play ItsYerChoice: ItsYerChoice Summit - https://recallers.com/iycsummit-join/   Resources:   1.
