His School of Podcasting show has over 2.5 million downloads. To learn more, visit www.schoolofpodcasting.com. He has helped hundreds of people plan, launch and grow their podcasts, and he is the author of the book Profit from Your Podcast: Proven Strategies to Turn Listeners into a Livelihood. Dave is also a featured speaker at events. In 2016 Dave joined Libsyn (the largest podcast hosting company) as part of their tech support team. In 2018 he was inducted into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame. Find all his shows at www.powerofpodcasting.com. The School of Podcasting features step by step tutorials, to shape your idea, record your concept and publish your message to the world. It also includes a private Facebook group to network with other podcasting minds. It also includes group coaching sessions (60-90 minutes twice a month) and “Lunch with Dave” sessions (short 30-minute coaching calls) so you are never alone, frustrated or lost. It also has a 30-day money-back guarantee. For more information see www.schoolofpodcasting.com/start. Highlights from the Interview Dave Jackson helped me start my podcast. I went through the School of Podcasting coursework in October 2019, planned my podcast in November 2019, and launched it in December 2019. It worked for me, and I would recommend the School of Podcasting to anyone, especially pharmacists. I attended office hours and lunch meetings for additional support from Dave. The additional coaching was valuable. Getting help from the School of Podcasting Facebook Group was also valuable. When I wanted input and ideas from other podcasters, Dave and the students in the Facebook Group were happy to help. In summary, I had a good experience with the School of Podcasting. Much like pharmacists are one of the most accessible healthcare professionals in the US, Dave Jackson is a very accessible podcasting coach. Podcasting opens doors. People will be guests on a podcast who don’t typically make themselves available to the general public. Having a “why” for starting a podcast is important. Knowing who the podcast is for is important too. When a podcast host has a clear picture of why they are podcasting and who they’re talking to, it helps them determine what to talk about and ultimately helps them achieve their “why.” My podcast has helped me get back out there socially after isolating myself for years to focus on raising a child with a disability. I have positioned myself as a pharmacist/voice actor/podcast host publicly and made connections, built relationships, and grown my social media connections because of my podcast. Should someone have a solo show or an interview show? Both! Interview shows build your network. Solo shows grow your influence. Because of podcasting, Dave secured 3 jobs. Most recently, he joined Libsyn. Dave and I both participated in the 30-day NaPodPoMo challenge. NaPodPoMo is "baptism by fire.” The challenge gets you comfortable with podcasting in 30 days. You don’t have to publish everything you record. It’s ok to practice your podcasts before publishing them. With solo podcasts, I create show notes before I record. If I make a mistake, I can edit and redo. Do you have a podcast? Do you go to conferences? You could get interviews at conferences. This could lead to press for the conference and sponsorship for your podcast. Dave mentioned Glenn the Geek from Horse Radio Network. Glenn got sponsorships after hosting a booth at a horse-related conference. Plus, his listeners/target audience was there, and he got to meet them. Dave gave examples of podcast monetization from his book: Profit From Your Podcast: Proven Strategies to Turn Listeners into a Livelihood. In one example, Mark from Beyond Bourbon St. Podcast increased business for a New Orleans-based tour guide company and got them as a sponsor in return. Chris Krimitsos, Chief Creative Officer of the Podfest Multimedia Expo recommends Dave’s book to those interested in making money with a podcast. Pharmacies can have podcasts. Sharing the “101” stuff on the podcast helps customers be more informed. Once patients/clients/the community find you, they will consume your other episodes and maybe even your entire back catalog of episodes. In this case, a podcast is not your business. It’s your business card. You can make warm leads and build a relationship through a podcast. If needed, you can hire someone to do editing, artwork, and a blog post (show notes).

A 2017 Inductee into The Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame, Rob spent many years focused on the early development of the internet, the world wide web and technology with a nationally syndicated radio show called WebTalk World Radio Show, which started in 1999 and went through to 2006. If 2020 has taught us anything, it's that we can't predict the future — not even the future of podcasting. But today’s guest believes that podcasting is more vital than ever as we think about how we can connect in the era of covid-19, and beyond. Rob Greenlee is a pioneer of the podcast space. He got his start in podcasting in 2004 with the first nationally syndicated radio show "WebTalk World Radio Show and was inducted into the the Podcasters Hall of Fame in 2017. Rob’s been podcasting for over 15 years and today he serves as the vice president of Content and Partnerships at LIBSYN. He currently co-hosts the "New Media Show", a weekly audio and video podcast that streams LIVE on NewMediaShow.com/live. I brought Rob onto Podcast Ally to speak to the trends to be aware of as we look to the future of podcasting. He chats about: What it was like being a pioneer in the podcast space The key differences between podcasts and radio The benefits -- and the risks -- of the influx of advertising into the podcast space Why he believes comedians completely changed the trajectory of podcasts Why podcasters should create content that they're passionate about rather than focusing so heavily on what they think their audience wants How podcasts are an important medium for connection, especially during the pandemic Please check out Rob’s podcast New Media Show for more commentary on the podcast industry. You can find the New Media Show at https://newmediashow.com/ or wherever you listen to podcasts.

Hello, I’m Hillary Rubin and this is the 12th episode of the Create Like A Mother Podcast. On my quest to reconnect with my creativity, I was lucky to sit down with a woman I adore and miss dearly - the one and only Elsie Escobar, who introduced me to podcasting back in early 2000’s when we were both teaching yoga and as she says it, we did all the things. We did… Elsie’s quirky, rebellious and raising her two girls UNCONVENTIONALLY. We’re going deep into Creating A Safe Space For Children to Thrive. We talk about ... HOW motherhood is about creating yourself again and again... WHAT changes in parenting as our children grow up... HOW Interruptis shows up when an idea comes in while washing dishes… AND so much more! We unpacked why she chose homeschooling, family meetings and dealing with the pushback from society. I even took notes… Buckle up, get ready for the wisdom nuggets… AND Thank you so much for listening, sharing and reviewing this podcast. Remember this is your safe place to hear what other mamas who are just like YOU do to stay connected to their creativity. It'll be something like I've been podcasting for three years. There are these other podcasters who I'm pretty sure are buying their audience. They're spouting their numbers, and they're gigantic. How am I supposed to compete with somebody like that? I totally understand that question. Here are some things to consider: You Can't Compete Because its a good visual. How would a seventeen-year-old boxer compete against the champion who has held the title for six years? You don't put that kid in the ring. He's going to get killed. The experience, the stamina, he just isn't ready. He is completely out of his league. But I've Been Podcasting For Three Years But Dave, I've been podcasting for three years. You say that in some cases, you know people who are really starting to make a difference with their podcast at three years mark. To this I say"Uh-huh," but here are some things that we need to think about. We never know what's going on behind the scenes with a podcast. You might have a job (or two) and a spouse and some kids. The other podcast may not have any of those. Can you imagine how much free time you would have to promote if you didn't have any other activities and could focus on your podcast 100% of the time? So if you look at podcasters from the outside, there's a person with a podcast here, and another podcaster over there and you think they are the same and they are not. We have no idea what is going on behind the scenes. They might have a background in selling and your background is in teaching. Radiolab thanked 25 people at the end of their show. I am an army of one. Can I compete? In 2015ish I was up for a Podcast Movement Podcast Award and one of the shows in my category was Reply All. I was competing against them. I've also had my Logical Weight Loss podcast compete against Jillian Michaels. Can we compete? Yes. The minute you turn on the microphone you are competing. Some of the things these teams of 25 use you don't need (original music?). While great production is like icing on a cupcake, if its all icing (and no cupcake) that doesn't work (see serial season two). The Two Things That Kill a Podcast BABIES Babies are so selfish. It's all about them. All they scream is feed me, wipe my butt, I want a nap. That can really get on your nerves (kidding). COMPARTING YOUR PODCAST TO OTHERS When you say "how do I compete" at the hear you are comparing your show to others, and that can seriously do nasty things to your content. If you ever feel yourself comparing yourself - STOP. STOP COMPARING YOUR SHOW TO OTHERS. You need three things to create good content: Your attitude Your health The support of those around you (see this episode for a deep dive into this subject). There is no competition I am a co-host on the Podcasters Roundtable with Daniel J. Lewis and Ray Ortega. Technically both of these people are my "competition" but they are not. Why? Because you can listen to me on Monday, Daniel on Tuesday, and Ray on Wednesday. As long as you deliver value, you're safe and don't have to worry. You Can't Buy An Audience You can buy an opportunity for people to hear your show, but you can't pay them to listen. Your podcast needs to provide value so they will come back because they want more. Holly Barey is beautiful. In 2004 they put her in a Catwoman suit, spent a million dollars to my $82 million (a loss of 18 million). On Rotten Tomatoes the movie has a ranking of 9 out of 100 with 197 people voting. In 2009 Disney worked on a movie called John Carter based on a popular book. According to Wikipedia is the most expensive movie ever created. It was a super popular book. It's kind of a sci-fi fantasy thing. It had a young, hot actor from Friday Night Lights, which was a very popular TV show here in the States. Yeah, they lost $200 million on that movie You cannot buy an audience. And upon the release, it received a mixed critical reception. In other words, it wasn't any good. There are great visuals. It had a great soundtrack. It had great action sequences. But the biggest criticism was toward the characterization and this thing called the plot that movies have, and you kind of need a good plot, you need a story. It's the content. It's delivering value. And apparently, this movie did not deliver value because it lost them $200 million. And I remember seeing all the ads for this movie, that all the promotion. Before You Start Spending Money to Grow Your Podcast I see a lot of people who say, "I'm not getting enough downloads and they turned to Facebook ads or advertising an overcast or Spotify or Castro (all podcast listening apps). They are trying to get the word out about their show. You can buy eyeballs/earholes but you can't buy an audience because an audience is someone who comes back for more. Do What Your Big Networks Can't Answer every email (in my travels big shows don't do this) Get your audience on the phone. In the book Superfans (and in the Colin Morgan Interview on Podcast Juinkes) Pat Flynn and Colin Morgan talk about reaching out to random members of their audience via the phone (you can get a free Google Voice number, or Podcast Voicemail to mask your real phone number). How do you provide great content? You know who your audience is. How do you know what they want? You talk to them. You are a Jetski, they are a cruise ship. You can change your content in record time. They can't. You are much more flexible. They are not. You need to identify your weaknesses and your strengths. You also need to identify your "competition's" strengths and weaknesses and don't try to cover the same area whey they will unquestionably squash you. Go to where they are. In some cases, if a show is so big they can't go out in public. You can, and while you're there you can get feedback on how to make your show better. Be sure to poll your audience. This can be as simple as "what do you like about the show, what do you wish I would do differently?" If you want to ask, "How did you learn about the podcast" so you can do more of that. There is More Than One Way To Measure Success Keep in mind there are more ways to measure success than downloads. These includes: Is your show successful (are you achieving your "why?" Comments on your website Email responses Social marketing interactions Business metrics (new customers) The Right Podcast Equipment Webinar On February 26th there is a free online webinar at www.schoolofpodcasting.com/webinar where we will go over podcast equipment and the best option for you. Podcasting can be fun and fulfilling when you don't have to band your head against a wall to release a simple episode. At the School of Podcasting, we show you in videos how to export your show in the proper format. We show you how to order the right plan for your podcast so your media host matches your strategy. We help you podcast frustrating free. Join today at www.schoolofpodcasting.com/start The New Academy of Podcasting Let's start off with the positive. Wondery, a company with 82 employees and revenues (according to growjo.com) of around 15 million per year organized a new "Academy of Podcasters" and will launch a Golden Mic awards in 2021. Per their website, "The Academy is professionally run by an Executive Director and an Account Manager. These roles are overseen by a volunteer Board of Governors who set the strategic vision and goals of the organization. 17 Founding Members will establish the organization and guide its initial creation with a goal of 1) moving The Golden Mics into a key recognition position and 2) encouraging growth and networking of the Academy and the industry. Members are individuals in the podcast industry who are part of one of the Academy’s Peer Groups; each Peer Group will vote on its respective categories for The Golden Mics." So it's great that big companies with big budgets are going to be promoting podcasting. This is a good thing. Someone Needs to Learn How to Google The companies listed above need to learn how to do some Google searches. When you come in with a "We've arrived" mentality, you can easily offend those who have already been here working in the trenches. I mean who do you think you are the pilgrims? The larger media companies keep saying things that seem to just ignore history. For example, an article that came out THIS WEEK stated that " Born in the halls of public radio, podcasting has emerged as one of the fastest-growing businesses in media over the past few years." Podcasting was NOT born in the halls of public radio. It was born in a hotel room where Dave Winer and Adam Curry met. In the past, I've just let them roll off m back, but I remember someone from one of these companies who stated there weren't any women podcasters in the early years (completely erasing people like Mignon Fogerty and Murr Raferty. Who can forget Steve Jobs referring to podcasting as "Amateur Hour." So when I approached Hernan Lopez the founder and CEO of Wondery that there HAS BEEN a “completely peer-based, not for profit, fully representative" awards show and I had won such an award he apologized. I'm Not Saying Get Off My Lawn Lopez was at an educational conference stating a lack of education. I'm not saying get off my lawn. I'm saying Marc Maron didn't invent podcasting (nor did Serial) and if you want me to greet you with open arms, it would be much easier if you would stop kicking me in the balls. To the best of my knowledge, the Adamy of podcasters which controls the Hall of Fame is still in existence. It hasn't had a ceremony since 2018 due to a lack of sponsorship. This is sad. While some may feel this is just a bunch of friends slapping each other on the back, if you do some research that it's not just old white guys but women and people of color (granted the majority of the recipients is middle-aged white guys because when podcasting first started THOSE WERE THE PEOPLE WHO WERE PODCASTING. So I look forward to seeing the spotlight the new academy will point at podcasting, and just ask them to quite saying things that make use feel invisible or worse, erase the past. Dave Jackson is an award-winning podcaster who has been podcasting since April of 2005. He recently has nine podcasts, four of which have over 250 episodes each. Dave is best known as the host of The School of Podcasting, where he’s helped hundreds of people launch podcasts. His podcast is primarily about starting a podcast and growing your influence. In 2018, Dave was inducted into the Podcasters Hall of Fame. In this episode, he talks about how he first discovered and started podcasting. He shares a beautiful story of one of his unintended consequences when he was still new to podcasting. He also talks about how he deals with impostor syndrome. “So many times we think we have to be perfect—we have to know this or I don't know this or that—you just have to know more than your audience.” In this episode, Dave really deep dives into his story of how and why he started his influence. Scott Johnson is the founder of the Frogpants Podcast Network and a host of 9 podcasts including The Morning Stream, the Instance, Current Geek and Filmsack. Scott has won multiple awards for his podcasts and was inducted into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame in 2018. Scott and I talked about his intuitive process for bringing people into his network and his idea that 'you get the chat room you deserve' We also spoke about how he built an event to help build community - Nerdtacular.
2-Minute Tip: Greet Your Audience A lot of speakers pace back stage or pound coffee or try to deal with nerves in other ways before going out to speak. Instead, go out into the audience as folks are arriving, and greet audience members. Have a brief chat to get to know folks. This accomplishes a few things. It gives you something to do and gets you out of your own head It gives you information you can leverage in your talk to better connect with the audience while you speak It gives you a friendly face to look out at from the stage It let's an audience member feel heard and gives them a favorable impression of you Post Tip Discussion: Meet Dave Jackson About 10 years ago, my team and I were looking at ways to integrate this brand new podcasting thing into our corporate training and brand evangelism efforts. I was already a fan of the medium, so I started listening to podcasts about podcasting to figure out how we could do it. Ultimately, I turned most of that project over to Tim Garber who appeared on this show way back in episodes 10 and 11 and who you can still hear at the end of every episode today. But all that is how I found with Dave Jackson whispering in my ear from the School of Podcasting as I tried to find my way to a taxi at the Philadelphia airport in 2008. I've been a fan of Dave's work and all he's done for this medium for a long time, and I'm thrilled to have him on the show today. One of the most important lessons in this chat is that while Dave is an experienced speaker, he still gets nervous before a talk. And then he does the talk anyway. He also still takes the time to rehearse, practice out loud, and try the stage before folks come in. There's a lot more in today's conversation, too. So who is Dave? Dave Jackson started experimenting with audio on the Internet in 2004. In 2005 he launched his first podcast and soon launched the School of Podcasting (the Internet's first site dedicated to helping people learn the right way). His accomplishments include: 3.2 Million Downloads 3044 Episodes Director of Podcasting for the New Media Expo Featured Speaker at Podcast Movement 2014- 2018 Featured and Keynote Speaker at Podcast Mid Atlantic and Podfest Orlando 2018 Inducted into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame Unlike many other “geeks” who know how to podcast, Dave's been a technical trainer for over 20 years. This means he not only understands the technology but can explain it in a plain English “geek-speak free” environment. He has a Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Akron (Specializing in technical education). While there are other podcast consultants, Dave believes his experience sets him apart in regards to helping folks make sense of the entire podcasting process. He not only help with the “how,” but also explains the why, and makes sure new podcasters avoid common podcasting pitfalls. Dave's won awards at fortune 500 companies for hi customer service. In a nutshell, he cares. Today I talk with Noah Tetzner who starts the History of Vikings five months ago, and when the average podcaster is getting a little under 2,000 downloads per episodes, Noah is getting 10,000 downloads per episodes. I wanted to know what he's doing to grow his audience so fast. Noah Tetzner Wanted a Show About Vikings But Couldn't Fine One He Liked 1:58 Like many podcasters, Noah found some podcasts that weren't bad, but they didn't really fit 100% of what he was looking for. What did Noah do? He started one of his own. Is he a big tech nerd? No. Did he come with a pre-made audience? No. He found guests that had more than a heartbeat (like some shows) he found guests who could bring value. In this interview you will also hear how: Noah is buying ads on other history shows to promote his show How much Noah is spending per show How reviews seem to be boosting his chart position, but may not do much for downloads How he appears on shows as a guest even if they are not about history He is building relationships with fellow podcasters and his audience His strategy is to do your research and be genuine Not everything he tried worked How he overcame Imposter Syndrome to start his show How he is now pursuing monetization His main priority is growing his audience. Check out his show at www.thehistoryofvikings.com Mentioned: www.newandnoteworthy.info Podcast Rewind: Where Has Dave Been? 19:15 Big Podcast: Podcast Longevity, Failures, And How To Know If You'll Make It In Podcasting Podcast Envy: Dave Jackson, School of Podcasting, on Impostor Syndrome and Podcasters Hall of Fame Unstructured Podcast: Dave Jackson The Word From Mouth: SEARCH, ADOPTION, AND MOVING THE NEEDLE IN PODCASTING – WITH DAVE JACKSON Want to interview me on your show? Contact Me What I Learned From My Podcast Focus Group 24:54 I am in a "Mastermind" with a graphics person, a lawyer, audio editors, and more. We are all podcasters and share our opinions on how to grow each other's podcast. It's free (you don't need to spend 5,000 a day to be in a mastermind - start one today). Here are some of the things I learned: I don't expand enough on what people get so they see the value My bullet points were out of order and I put the best bullet point at the bottom of the list You're not really saying what people are getting I had too many options to choose from I need to take my testimonials and sprinkle them through the sales copy So What's This Have to Do With Your Show? Sometimes you need an OUTSIDE opinion to find things that are RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU. We Need To Talk: Setting Your Podcast Expectations 31:30 There are people with 10 downloads who want to monetize their show. There are people with five episodes that want to quit their day job. Here is another way to think about this and set expectations A musician has written their first five songs. Can they make a living? An actor has gone on five auditions and might have a lead on a commercial. Can they make a living acting? An author has five manuscripts and an agent. Can they make a living as an author? The answer? It depends. The odds are not in your favor, but it's going to take TIME. Many "overnight successes" took YEARS to get their big break. If your sole reason is to make QUICK MONEY, and you are bringing NO AUDIENCE, the odds are stacked against you. STEP ONE OF MAKING MONEY WITH YOUR PODCAST So many people hear crowdfunding and focus on the funding, and forget that step is one is create a crowd. They put the cart before the horse. How do you build your audience? In a nutshell, it boils down to this. 1. Identify who your audience is 2. Listen to them and determine what content they want to hear. 3. Create content that will inspire them to tell a friend (in other words, its good). I refer to this is "deliver value." 4. Go to where your target audience is 5. Make friends with them, and bring value to every conversation, listen for ideas for future episodes. 6. Then tell them about your show Step 7 would be repeat steps 2-6 Ready to Start a Podcast? Here at Simply Designed Life Podcast, we've mostly discussed work-life balance from the female perspective, but what about the male perspective? I think it was around Episode 10 with Jennifer Ghymn on Writing and the Interculture Life around the 14-minute time mark that we wondered how men juggled work-life balance. To follow up on that conversation, and in honor of the Father's Day weekend, our next couple episodes will be dedicated to the male perspective of productivity within the context of work and family life. First up, we have comedian Andy Shaw of Instafather, and then next week it's Super Joe Pardo, who's the founder of the Mid-Atlantic Podcast Conference and host of The Business Podcast. We'll hear these "Super Men" discuss their journeys and hacks for getting it all done. At any rate, I'm stoked to introduce our next guest whom I had the pleasure of meeting at the fabulous Blog Connect Conference in Philly, hosted by the amazing Chrystina Cappello and team ;). But before that, I wanted to announce that I am excited and honored to be competing in this year's Podcast Movement's PMx Competition. What is PMX exactly? PMx is an adaptation of TEDx talks with a competitive spin. I will have 15 minutes to give my talk in front of four judges, competing with 11 other contestants for the chance to receive the PMX championship belt, be recognized by the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame, and be automatically selected to speak at Podcast Movement 2019. PMx will be on Monday, July 23d from 9am – 3pm EST at the Marriott in Philadelphia, PA. Less than 40 days until I take the PMx stage at @PodcastMovement - no pressure right? A big Shout out to Cypress Resources who will be sponsoring the competition. According to a Communications Research Study, people fear public speaking more than death, and so for me, this should be an interesting challenge to see whether or not I could rise to occasion, own it, or "Bring it On" like in that cheesy, but feel-good, 2000 rom-com with Kirsten Dunst, but most of all, impact those who share the same fears as myself but take courageous action and speak out in spite of those fears. Anyway, enough about the competition and me, let's get into the conversation with Andy Shaw. Who is Andy? Andy Shaw is a full-time college admissions marketing director, a father of twin 3-year-old girls and a 5-year-old boy, an improv comedian with The Oxymorons, a social media consultant, and an avid fan of Black Mirror on Netflix even though it is terrifying. He's made a goal of helping new dads gain confidence with Instather.com, sharing his own stories and practical advice on fatherhood. He's the upcoming author of The New Mom's Guide to New Dads, a book based on helping moms figure out what dads are thinking and how to get them more involved by raising expectations. While all of these jobs and roles may seem like a lot, Andy has watched his incredible wife give birth to twins so he's just gonna keep quiet. Quotes from Andy On Parenting If I accidentally yell in the heat of the moment, my kids are gonna take that a lot more personally than if I just yelled at a stranger who just cut me off on a highway, right? My kids, I have to see them every day, they just don't disappear right down the highway. (13:17) On Tackling Most Important Things (MIT'S): So Pomodoro, 25 minutes on, 5 minutes off, but also priorities so I can list out my priorities for the day, whether it's for career or at home and I always do them in chunks so I always make sure I'm tackling my biggest priorities for the day. So at the end of the day and the week, I know no matter even if the kids are crazy or everything falls apart, I got some of my biggest tasks done. (16:58) Know Thyself You can't be the best at everything. If you’re trying to be the best at everything, you’re probably the best at nothing. Pick a couple things... The more aware you are of what you like and don’t like, know what your strengths are,
Because of My Podcast: Free Tickets 2:00 Brad from the Cinema Guys ( www.wearethecinemaguys.com ) explains how he was approached by a small local Cinema Chain who listens to his podcast. Brad worked a deal that enables him to get tickets to movies. Brad (being the cool guy he is) is using them as a give away for his audience. He has also worked to do a screening of Brad's all-time favorite horror movie, "John Carpenter's The Thing." They get to introduce the movie and then do a Q&A afterward. For more information go to www.schoolofpodcasting.com/affiliates Why Knowing Your Why Matters 8:00 It keeps you focused. You are no longer distracted by things that don't help you achieve your goal. If you know why you're doing something, you can see the results clearer. This enables you to spot the small victories that then motivate you to keep going. It is then the motivation that enables you to try again. When another small victory comes along, you get another dose of motivation, and a pinch of this thing called confidence. How My "Why" Gave Me Super Powers I had been wanting to lose weight, and over the last year, I have been going up and down. I would get down to maybe 218 lbs, and then go up to 221 or 222. I wanted to get up and go to the gym in the morning. I knew to drink lots of water, and get plenty of sleep. I knew what to do. However, when I listed my priorities I wrote down things like rewriting my book More Podcast Money, I needed to update some tutorials at the School of Podcasting, and take a class on SEO. Nowhere in there is anything about my health. That's when I realized why I wasn't losing weight. It simply was not a priority. I got a call from letting me know that I was being inducted into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame. The minute I hung up the phone, I said out loud, "Well somebody's getting up early tomorrow." While it is somewhat weird, as I normally try not to care what people think of me, I knew there would be lots of pictures. I even hired a photographer to take pictures during my presentation. Suddenly, like a light switch, I had willpower. I had focus. I had a purpose. No longer did I need to watch TV. I realized that most of the taped TV shows I use to watch rarely delivered any real value. I could take that time and use it at the gym, or walk around, or cook healthy food, and THAT would deliver value to my goal of losing weight. When You Know Your Why You Can Make it Through the How “He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.” -Friedrich Nietzsche The two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you discover why you were born.– Mark Twain Apple Podcasts hits 550,000 Podcasts I listened to my first episode, and in it, I mention in April of 2005, there were maybe "4000" podcasts. This article says in 2005 there were 3000 podcats, now there are 550,000 and according to this TechCrunch article, there have been Fifty billion episodes have been streamed/downloaded since launch. The new numbers include 18.5 million individual episodes representing 155 countries, in more than 100 languages. So in 2005 when I was explaining to people how cool podcasting was, and how awesome it was that you could "teel the software to watch this site" (better known today as a subscription) and that you didn't ' need a Mac, and you didn't need an iPod to listen. IT WAS PAINFUL as many people just didn't get it (it took a while for me to get it). But I knew the potential power of podcasting, and I had quit listening to radio, and I wanted people to experience the same joy I had found. It didn't seem hard because if I helped ONE person understand and start listening to podcasts, and I had ONE more person to talk about Dawn and Drew with, it was worth my time and effort. When you know you're why the "work" doesn't seem like work. It just seems like something you do. When I first started playing the guitar it was BRUTALLY PAINFUL, but I knew I wanted to play. I wanted to be like my brother (who played) and so the pain wasn't so bad. I knew it was temporary, and I could make it through the how. My "Whys" I get to help people (my background is in training. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Education specializing in Technical Education from the University of Akron) It's creative (my hobbies are music, writing, photography, poetry). It's geeky (I get to play with software to build websites, track downloads, and more) I get to leave a very small fingerprint on the planet. Neither of my marriages produced any children. The word "Legacy" seems a bit much, but you get my point. I am meeting and creating great friends. It's helping me to pay off my student loans If I lost my job today, I would have a cushion of money coming to tie me over (and in reality, I would probably be able to the School of Podcasting Ful time) I'm not sure what I would do with my free time if I didn't. Your Why's Might Be: Share your knowledge Get your message out out Promote a business Stay connected to friends and family Be seen as an expert Open the door to possibilities Find like-minded people Inner office company communication Educate Entertain Getting the Motivation To Start I just listened to a great episode of the You Wanna Do What? Podcast by Monica Rivera where she interviewed Jeff Haden about motivation. It was a really good interview and had some great insights into motivation. Including: You only need enough motivation to start. If you set small achievable goals, those "little wins" give you the motivation to try again and keep moving. So some examples of small achievable goals my be Buying your equipment Plugging everything in and making your first recording Getting your artwork Publishing your first episode Syndicating to Apple, Stitcher, etc Getting 10 downloads for an episode Getting 50 downloads an episode When accomplishing these little milestones, it feeds your motivation to keep going. 25:10 Brenda from My Tech Toolbelt explain how her kids are grown, and while she is thankful for her job, it can be kind of boring, and she is podcasting because she enjoys learning. Yes, there is a lot to learn but as she put it, "It's fun. It's exciting, and I've already got two press passes (to be continued)" 27:37 Jim Collison from The Average Guy Network (and my Co-host for Ask the Podcast Coach) is a lot like me. We both love being around people, we both love helping people. We both like to talk and to influence people to help them do things. The #1 Killer of Motivation and Why Podcasting is Like Golf 30;03 There is a reason that employees at companies are strongly urged not to share their income amount with other employees. If two people share that information, one person is leaving that meeting upset. So when people share how many downloads they get in a Facebook group, and their numbers are three times as many as you, ignore it and instead of focusing on their numbers, focus on your audience and how you can serve them. If two golfers shared their scores, someone is going to think, "WHAT?! How is that person better than me? Well, there are a number of factors: Better equipment More experience Better coaching Better attitude More athletic More time to practice So if you came to me and said, "I can't believe they are better than me! And I answered: Your sound quality is very distracting You have half as many episodes They have a completely different niche They have more time to promote their show They have a budget to market your show and you don't They have no children and you have five They went to the School of Podcasting and you watched outdated YouTube Videos Wouldn't you be able to see why someone might be getting more downloads than you (and keep in mind, there are more ways to measure podcast success than downloads). So unless you want to detail your podcast DON'T COMPARE YOUR SHOW TO OTHER PODCASTS. Heli PR77D Microphone Shootout 35:02 The Heil PR77D is basically a Heil PR40 with a bass roll-off switch, and something that will look very cool in any videos. It comes in black and purple and retails for $249 where the Heil PR40 is $308. You will hear these with my mic preamp the DBX 286 $199 off during the shootout. In today's shootout, I compare it to an Electrovoice RE320 $299 Audio Technica AT2005 $79, Audio Technica BP40 $349, Blue Yeti $129 The Heil PR77D has that traditional warm Heil Sound. When I switched it voice mode (which cuts out frequencies below 120Hz) it seems a little too clear for my voice). It comes with a nice black velvet bag to keep it in. It's a very sturdy microphone, and I love the retro look. Of the microphones above, the only one I steer people away from is the Blue Yeti unless you PROMISE to read the manual, buy an over-priced pop filter, and use it on a boom arm. I personally use the Electrovoice RE320, but I liked the warmth of all the Heil Microphones and I need to play with it a little more to see how the proximity effect is (if it has more bass when you get close to it). The rear rejection seemed about as good as the other microphones. Today it's 5 AM again, and I can't sleep. I'm slowly starting to work on my speech as on July 24th, 2018 I am being inducted into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame. It's really an honor and its humbling. Person and person have been leaving a message saying how it was, "Overdue," and "Well Deserved." They thank me for all the hard work. Hard work? Somewhere I got a gene where I just love to help people. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy, so it really wasn't hard work I got to be creative. I got to play with technology I got to help people. This wasn't hard work at all. Thanks for listening
Have you ever thought, "Oh someone is already doing a podcast about my subject." If so you need to listen to today's show with James Cridland of podnews.net who saw there were other sites and newsletters featuring podcast news, but he thought they were missing something. He had been doing newsletters and working in the radio industry for years, so he decided to start a newsletter (that became a podcast, and an Amazon Flash Briefing) and has really come out ahead of the pack. Today James peels back the curtain on what planning went into the show, and what tools he's using to pull off a daily show. Because of My Podcast: I'm Going to be Inducted into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame 1:34 I got a call last week from Gary Leland was surprised to hear that my peers have selected me to be inducted into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame. I am humbled, honored, and a whole lot of other emotions that I can't quite digest yet. Become a School of Podcasting Affiliate and Earn Money Referring People 3:57 You can earn money referring people to the School of podcasting and earn commissions each month they stay subscribed Go to www.schoolofpodcasting.com/affiliates James Cridland Shares What it Takes to Make A Daily Show That Knocks it Out of the Park 5:41 I brought James on as he is just crushing it with his newsletter on Podcasting. He seemed to just appear and is just crushing it. So in this interview, we hear: His planning and how he practiced first before launching He realized his environment changes as he travels and he needed to be able to produce it from any computer How he emersed himself in his niche as step one, and he uses https://www.inoreader.com/ as his freed reader (tutorial on inoreader) How does he choose which stories to spotlight How he uses newsletter analytics to understand his audience What stories are the most popular He codes his own website and uses Sendy to manage the email list What advice does he have for someone wanting to be an expert in their field As a person with a radio background, what do you think radio feels about podcasting? His thoughts on people buying their way up the Apple Rankings Marketing your podcast, and explaining it to future listeners What percentage of his downloads come from his Amazon Daily Briefing His thoughts on editing and the optimum length of a podcast He loves to listen to Death in Ice Valley, Hamish, and Andy, Reasons to be Cheerful Check out James Daily Podcast News Show at www.podnews.net [click_to_tweet tweet="I knew consistency would win in the end" quote="I knew consistency would win in the end"] Isn't Email Dead? 42:40 But wait, isn't email dead? According to some studies, email is four times more effective at reaching your audience than Facebook. (source) If you are looking for outreach, that may be social, if you're looking to boost sales, or get your audience to click on Something than email is still the king. An article that just came out a few days ago explains how 58% of people "check their email first in the morning vs 11% Facebook and 2% Twitter. 2.6 billion people have email vs 1.7 billion for Facebook. The article states that "It turns out that 77% of consumers prefer email over social media for permission-based promotional messages." (source). The only problem I have with the article is that it's from option monster who helps you get email sign-ups. What Makes a Good Lead Magnet? 44:16 The best lead magnet ideas typically come from your audience. It's a question someone asks, and it's a really good question. What problems can you help them solve? What would lessen their stress, save them time, or help them reach a goal? Here are some Lead Magnet ideas Poll results (you can use a free tool like Google Forms to create a poll) Reviews of Services see www.schoolofpodcasting.com/headlines Question and Answers Ebooks Webinars Mini-Courses www.schoolofpodcasting.com/babysteps Checklists Spreadsheets Toolkits Planners Guides You could make many of these with free tools such a Google Docs and then Save it as a PDF. What Email Service to Use? 47:05 Many people start out with Mailchimp as it's free. As James said in this episode, if things start taking off it can get expensive quickly. Keep an eye on your subscribers. I'm currently using Convertkit, but to be honest I never used any of the cool marketing tools they have. I should have stuck with Aweber. With that said, as I look into using marketing tools, I've heard a lot of good things about Active Campaign which seems powerful. Ready To Get Your Podcast Going? 51:25 I would love to work with you to get your podcast going. If it's already going, I'd love to help you grow your audience. In this debut episode of Season 2, I speak with She Podcasts co-host, Elsie Escobar. Elsie shares her journey of finding her authentic voice, including her struggle to communicate as a young person and the ways in which uncovering her blind spots has informed and improved her communication with others interpersonally and as a podcast host. Tune in for insight into making podcasting not only an inclusive platform for diverse voices, but also in considering how we can make podcasts more accessible to listeners. With that responsibility I feel powerful. There is no way I am going to let all of these people down, because I am representing.” - Elsie Escobar “We have so many blind spots that we don’t see. Sometimes parents, sometimes culture, sometimes privilege...is sheltering us. We don’t see the totality of who we are sometimes.” - Elsie Escobar “When I feel and sound the most at ease there is a lower quality, there’s a less rushed quality [to my voice].” - Andrea Catherine “How do I cultivate a platform where all voices are welcome and included without disregarding my own privileg?” - Andrea Catherine “You’ve got to be intentional about the clarity of your message in reaching it out. You’ve got to look at your own stuff and ask, ‘Are all of these conversations the same?... Would I benefit from opening up to other types of people, to other places, to other experiences?’”- Elsie Escobar “First, always listen.” - Elsie Escobar Meet Elsie: I am a ten year plus veteran in the industry and inductee to the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame. I know the heart and soul of podcasters and podcasting beyond Apple Podcasts and public media. It is with this primary point of view of the average podcast listener (via thousands of hours of podcast listening) and independent podcast producer that I bring a unique perspective to the podcasting industry. My passion within the industry is podcasting’s rapidly-changing environment, impact, access, community building, and advocacy.I welcome the opportunity to elevate existing conversations around podcast consumption and initiate ways to reach new listeners above focusing on metrics, advertising and monetization into social change and using podcasting as a tool for personal growth and transformation.
I started this year off great. I was losing weight, as time went on, I began to YoYo. So while I'm still down 5 lbs from the beginning of the year I wasn't making much progress. Over the memorial day weekend I dusted off my favorite to do list tool todoist.com and it was a mess. I cleared out all the old stuff, and I got focused. So I had to decide what would be my number one focus. I had a few. I'm working on a new version of a book I originally wrote in 2012 call More Podcast Money. I might do a revamp of the School of Podcasting's website (even though I did one five months ago, but there is a new bright and shiny tool for websites ---oooohhh. I am working on turning a diary form 1995 into a podcast called the History of the Band Six Shooter. Then I noticed something. None of my priorities included the phrase "Lose weight," or "Eat less, exercise more." THAT is what I was not losing weight. It wasn't a priority. That was on Monday. On Tuesday the 29th, I got a call from a friend of mine letting me know that a group of my peers has chosen me to be inducted into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of fame. The ceremony is in two months. The minute I got off the phone I said to myself. YOU WILL GET UP AND GO TO THE GYM. The interesting thing was, this was not a question, this was not a possibility, this was a fact. Sure enough, Wednesday rolled around and at 6:45 AM I was in my shorts on the way to the gym. I was doing High-Intensity Interval Training on a treadmill sweating my butt off. So what changed? My Why. Look, I know that if I don't exercise and eat bad food I will gain weight. I increase my chances of cancer, stroke, diabetes, and include any other horrible diseases you want here. For some reason, those don't motivate me. Don't get me wrong. They SHOULD, but if I'm gonna be honest they don't. Maybe I'm a fool and think that I'll be lucky and dodge those bullets. This like ignoring that you are putting water in a bucket and eventually it's going to get full. You see eventually it will get full. So for now, my appetite is gone, my motivation is off the charts and I'm hyper-focused. The ceremony is July 24th. What happens after July 24th? Well, hmmmm. My goal is I will develop healthy habits and just keep on doing what I'm doing. There is that negative voice in my head that says, "Sure, go ahead and do your little exercise stuff, do your healthy eating, whatever, I'll be back." For now, I'm going to ignore that voice and politely go tell him to piss off. That voice is always there, always will be there, and the more I learn to ignore it the better I will be. So if you're why isn't inspiring you to do the right things that lead to weight loss, find a new why. I'm here to tell you the right "why" can make a world of difference. Hello listeners! This week we have a conversation with Elsie Escobar. Elsie Escobar is a ten year plus veteran in the industry and inductee into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame. She knows the heart and soul of podcasters and podcasting beyond Apple Podcasts and public media. It is with this primary point of view of the average podcast listener (via thousands of hours of podcast listening) and independent podcast producer that Elsie brings a unique perspective to the podcasting industry. Her passion within the industry is podcasting’s rapidly-changing environment, impact, access, community building, and advocacy. Elsie welcomes the opportunity to elevate existing conversations around podcast consumption and initiate ways to reach new listeners above focusing on metrics, advertising and monetization into social change and using podcasting as a tool for personal growth and transformation. Elsie has a mentorship group The E-League and it went live for the Spring session this April 2017. Elsie’s biggest focus is on "podcasting advocacy" meaning bringing awareness about podcasting and podcasters to those that don't know about it, or that don't know "all the things." We talked about all the things from living in El Salvador to studying theatre and how Elsie got into podcasting back in 2006. I'm back from podcast movement, and I had a blast. I also have insights from one of the hardest assignments I've done in a long time. My Impression of Podcast Movement 2017 Nothing cooler than being picked up at that airport by fellow podcasters Marcus Couch from WordPress Plugins A to Z. We haven't seen each other face to face in about 10 years. We cranked some cool metal on the way to the Marriot and it was like old times. Then I get the then Marriot and I get to meet my co-host Jim Collison from the Average Guy network, and I go over to his table and there sits the one and only Steve Stewart and Mike Dell. So for me, the Summar Camp aspect of Podcast Movement is in full effect. The coolest line I heard all week was relayed by Paul Colligan (another person' I've known for 10+ years) and it came from a Dan Klass session. Dan (who is a former comedian) shared how often at comedy clubs you will have multiple comedians perform in an evening - and yet they all use the same microphone. The point? It's not about the tech. I roomed with Erik K Johnson from podcasttalentcoach.com, and he had stated that it would be awesome if he could meet a web developer who needed help with his podcast, as he was a podcast consultant who needed help with his website. I get into the elevator, introduce myself to everyone in the elevator and it turns out that one of the people is a web designer thinking of starting a podcast. When we get out of the elevator, on of the first people who see is Erik. I felt like I was in a Christmas movie and it was going to start to snow. I saw Harry Durran from Podcast Junkies and Dr. Ryan Gray who has given up his practice to do podcasting full time and Harry introduces me to Natalie Jennings who happens to be taking head shots at a reasonable price. She shows me a few samples of people, and I'm hooked. I can't wait to see how they turn out. The few peaks I saw of what she did was amazing. See her at http://www.nataliechampajennings.com/ I found out in Paul Colligan's session that if you are in Google Play Music, you are also on the Google Home portable audio speaker. I also know of a cool double secret project that is going to make recording double-enders via a browser very cool. I was on a panel with Ray Ortega, Daniel J. Lewis, and Addy Saucedo on what is inside an RSS. This was an insanely nerdy topic, but due to the recent Apple announcements we had some interested parties and I thought we pulled it off well. The bonus is I got to hang out with some cool friends. The Coolest Thing I Saw At Podcast Movement 2017 While there were tons of great sessions at PM17, as a vendor (I work for Libsyn.com - use the coupon code sopfree to get a free month) I don't get to attend any sessions. I did see something that was way cool. I met Alissa Daire of the Maximize Your Strengths show. I see her the first night, and she is in a group of people and we get talking about Strengths Finder, and she becomes a ping pong ball bouncing off the ceiling with energy. She's super nice, and it was great to catch up with her as I had met her last year. The next night, I'm standing at the Luau event, and here she comes. She explains how "I'm done." She's tired (as many people are), and she is considerably less energetic. Pat Flynn walks over, he's very witty and a super nice guy. Then the subject changes to strengths finder results, and it was like watching a time release video of a flower blooming. Her energy came back, her smile came back, her body language completely changed. It was amazing to watch. I saw this a few more times. It's late, and people have had a few adult beverages, then I ask them about their show, and BOOM, the body language picks up, the eyes are open a bit wider, the voice is a little louder. Later, Paris from Gamertag Radio got star struck when Cara Santa Maria from the Skeptics Guide to the Universe walks by. I offered to go bring her over. He got shy, so I did my best Steve Austin (the six million dollar man, not the wrestler) imitation across the showroom floor. I had no idea she was an Emmy Award winning journalist. I bring her over and embarrass Paris. Danny Peña is there, Jim Collison is there, and the minute Paris explained that he really did listen to her show the body language changed. For me, I think of it as being in your "first impression" mode and then finding out that you're among family. For the Best Content - Put a Time Frame On it I spoke about how I got lucky to be able to induct Dan Klass from the Bitterest Pill into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame. The presentation should last three minutes. I had hoped that three minutes would be longer than I thought. I wrote out my first draft. It had some bits about history and podcasting in 2005. It had examples of how the show made me feel. I made a joke about how the more I talk about his show, the more I sound like a stalker. I listed his accomplishments. I started the stopwatch and went into the presentation, about half what through I glanced at my phone and I was already at 5 and a half minutes. Oh boy...... What Was the Purpose of This Presentation? I had to go back and ask myself, what was the purpose of this presentation? The purpose was for the person sitting in row 7 who had been podcasting since 2015 and had no idea who Dan Klass was. It wasn't about me. It wasn't about being funny. I was about answering the question, "Why is Dan Klass in the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame." For me, this was a big opportunity, on a big stage, and I didn't want to mess it up for myself, or Dan. It was time to edit. Anything about me went out the door. The history lesson of iriver portable players and synchronization cables went up in smoke. Most of the stories I had about Dan might not go over if you didn't listen to his show. Only the things that HAD to be said would stay. I listed his accomplishments. I thought of the funniest thing I had heard on his show (he referred to his two-year-old daughter as Princess Tirade for quite some time), and the most memorable episode (of ALL podcasting) is episode 102 Mass Murder where he talks about what it's like when your Uncle is murdered, and you're walking past TV cameras escorting your mother to the funeral. It's at the end, I highly suggest you listen to it. I had pointed out that Dan was one of the first to try premium podcasting (this was YEARS before Patreon) and it didn't work well. That was negative, so I just pointed out that he was a pioneer and not afraid to try new things. I HAD TO POINT OUT, that Dan had been sharing stories a DECADE before Serial was on the scene. Dan was creating engaging stories in a box in his garage, and he did it without a team of 19 people. That had to stay. To make it entertaining, I thought of throwing in some old Baptist preacher tricks of getting people to repeat words. This came to me in the shower. It would make me stand out, but I was deeply worried about being too entertaining (again, this was all about Dan). Looking back, that was a dumb thought (you're not going to outshine Dan Klass). Just Because There Are No Time Limits in Podcasting Doesn't Mean There Shouldn't Be To fine tune my presentation I had to: Identify my audience Identify the purpose Make it entertaining I know some of us want to record it and publish it. I truly, always believe a podcast can benefit from editing. This is especially true if you are doing interviews. Because of My Podcast Devin Caroll Devin from the Big Picture Retirement podcast shares how he didn't' want to start a podcast but sure is glad he did. He just released episode 34, and his co-host has already billed $10,000, and Devin has billed $6,000 and has a client who will bring in $20,000. I bet you might think, they have a huge audience, right? Nope, according to Devin, they are averaging 534 downloads an episode. Darren Dake of the Coroner Talk podcast started a podcast in 2013, and started a podcast, but it didn't last. He really loves being a death scene investigator so he started the Coroner Talk podcast 2014. This lead to numerous opportunities: He started to make connections with people He now gets around 15,000 download a month He was asked the be the trainer supervisor for his state. He wrote a few books that has lead him to speak at conferences multiple times He includes going to different states to talk He created online courses for his "Coroner School" and is now taking off and now he is on track to make a six figure income from his speaking and his online courses. Please Notice: This wasn't overnight This wasn't easy. Your audience must always come first. Some Thoughts On Opportunities “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” ― Winston S. Churchill “We often miss opportunity because it's dressed in overalls and looks like work” ― Thomas A. Edison “Failure is only the opportunity more intelligently to begin again.” ― Henry Ford “I believe that every single event in life happens in an opportunity to choose love over fear.” ― Oprah Winfrey Unfortunately, there seems to be far more opportunity out there than ability.... We should remember that good fortune often happens when opportunity meets with preparation. Thomas A. Edison There comes a moment in every life when the Universe presents you with an opportunity to rise to your potential. An open door that only requires the heart to walk through, seize it and hang on. The choice is never simple. It's never easy. It's not supposed to be. But those who travel this path have always looked back and realized that the test was always about the heart. ...The rest is just practice. Jaime Buckley Spend eighty percent of your time focusing on the opportunities of tomorrow rather than the problems of yesterday. Brian Tracy Missed Opportunities I do a show called the Alexacast that is all about getting the most out of your Amazon Echo, Dot, etc. So I have an audience that is tied to Amazon. One might say they are Amazon "Super Users." Yet then Amazon Prime day came, and I have an audience that is tied to Amazon, and I barely promoted it. I should've made a big deal about this, and made it an event. Know What Opportunities Are Coming Up I found two sites that show special days. These are: https://www.daysoftheyear.com https://nationaldaycalendar.com By knowing when all these special days that come up, you might be able to make a special event to encourage your audience to interact with the show. Sometimes You Need To Ask I heard Dan Klass from the Bitterest Pill is being inducted into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame. I'm a HUGE Dan Klass fan. So I asked if I could do the induction speech to introduce Dan to an audience that may not know Dan like I feel I do. Sometimes Opportunity Are Based on Previous Actions Because Jared and Dan from Podcast Movement had called on me in the past and I delivered "the Goods," and I had acted professionally in the past when I worked with them, I was given the opportunity to induct Dan. This puts me on a big stage. If I show people that I can handle the big stage (I've been a keynote speaker at some conferences) I can show the world that I can bring value to your event. I’m excited to bring this Episode #25 of the Mother’s Quest podcast to you with a podcasting leader, mentor and community builder extraordinaire- the insightful and passionate, Elsie Escobar. A podcaster herself since 2006, at the time of this recording, Elsie is getting ready to be inducted into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame at the upcoming Podcast Movement conference. Among many accomplishments, she’s being recognized for her two impactful shows about podcasting The Feed – The Official Libsyn Podcast and She Podcasts, the podcast for women about podcasting and new media from the woman’s point of view. Elsie has a lot to say about podcasting… she’s a self-proclaimed die hard podcast junkie, who especially loves to help women like myself find clarity and power in our voice and shift the narrative to focus on the things that matter most, not the numbers or downloads, but the transformative power of podcasting and expanding our podcasting audience. Elsie and her She Podcasts partner Jessica Kupferman have developed together an incredible Facebook group with thousands of members, many of us mothers, on a quest to bring our mission forward through podcasting while showing up fully for our children in the magic and also the mess of motherhood. Pursuing podcasting and motherhood is Elsie’s She Podcasts partner Jessica, who dedicated this week’s episode to Elsie herself and spoke about Elsie’s tremendous empathy. This empathic quality of Elsie’s comes through in our conversation in the way she talks about “creating space” for her children, for her passion, for dialogue that elevates and for understanding the needs and behaviors of podcast listeners. In this episode, we cover a lot of territory, from Elsie’s roots in El Salvador and how she saw her mother reinvent herself after they emigrated to the US to the power and potential of podcasting to reach the ears of those who are underrepresented and need it most. It was such an honor to have this time with Elsie, to experience her fire and passion first-hand and hear her call to amplify women’s voices, change the conversation to the things that really matter, and bring the transformative power of podcasting into our communities. Elsie gave me a personal challenge to step outside of my digital comfort zone and go to my local library to find mothers where they are and bring Mother’s Quest to them. I’m inspired to expand and stretch my voice, my impact and who I reach and welcome into my community. I hope this conversation will inspire you to do the same. This Week’s Challenge: Elsie gave me a personal challenge to step outside of my digital comfort zone and go to my local library, mother’s groups, or homeschooling co-ops and talk to someone in person about the Mother’s Quest Podcast. She also shares another challenge to everyone to affirm, and share something that you love. Do it until sharing what you love expands, gets to the language that matches up with us, and enables you to eloquently share things that drive you. Again, do this challenge in person, and not online. Topics discussed in this episode: Consciously cultivating our podcast messages and giving podcast listeners “words they can repeat” and integrate into their own lives. Elsies’ upbringing in El Salvador, move to the United States when she was 9, and seeing her mother step up and reinvent herself after emigrating to the United States. “Creating space” for conversations with her children, especially when emotions are charged, and how her own partner spoke honestly with Elsie during difficult days after her children were born. Using podcasting as a venue to create a more feminine impact, looking beyond more traditional masculine metrics. How having the right business coaches has helped Elsie be everything she can be. The importance for Elsie of being true to herself and how that enables her to attract people who support her and forms her community. How socio-economics and cognitive behaviors affect the growth of podcasting The importance of expanding podcasting to those who are underrepresented: seniors, those who don’t have access to healthcare, the ones that feel alone, people battling addiction, people who need to hear a voice that is like theirs A challenge to move beyond our digital comfort zones and reach into communities to expand our podcast audiences Resources mentioned in this episode: DeRay Mckesson involved in Black Lives Matter She Podcasts The Feed: The Official Libsyn Podcast Joyful Courage Podcast Episode on Brain-informed Parenting The E-League, Elsie’s Podcast Coaching Program Podcast Movement 2017 Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame 2017 Thinx Panties Ep 24: Intersectionality and the Age of the New Heroine with Elizabeth Cronise McLaughlin Announcements Q & A on the Transformative Power of Podcasting with Erica Gordon – Let’s continue this conversation inspired by Elsie’s episode with a Q & A in the Mother’s Quest Facebook Group with side business success strategist Erica Gordon of the Moms With Dreams Podcast, the week of August 13th, exact day and time TBA. Guest Interviews or Co-Hosts -Spotify Accepts Podcast Submissions, should you expect to get in though?-Your comments We discuss “Show Guest Interviews or Co-Hosts: What Format is Best?”Solo, co-host, or guest? There are a few different podcast formats you could try:- Only you: You’re the host, the one host, and the only host.- This can work but you must have a talent for connecting with listeners, rare talent - You + one other standing host: You co-host with same partner for every episode.- This can work well, is a matter of chemistry between the two, but is a gamble- You will find with good and regular co-host you can build a solid/loyal audience- You + guest: You interview with a new guest on each episode. - You could also have a standing co-host + guest, but complicated- This format brings new perspectives, opinions, stories, voices, and talent to every episode. Your guests will share their episodes with their audiences, too, serving as advocates that will help you grow your listener base.Spotify Accepts Podcast Submissions, should you expect to get in though?-Accepting less than 10% of submissions, so don’t count on or expect to get into Spotify-Spotify is focused on creating curated playlists for users, thus main reason they are very picky on shows they add - https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfKJ76t_tPV2jugdX14NeajSfp7EV0hcgjVki1GEGuoeyJvDw/viewform?c=0&w=1 Listener Comments: Linda Irwin I personally listen to a show for the content not the numbers, but others feel differently.

Gary Leland returns to What's The Word to chat about his show, "The Gary Leland Show." Mr. Leland is an entrepreneur, podcaster and co-founder of Podcast Movement. He was inducted into the Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame in 2016. Gary moved to Texas from South Carolina in 1979 with less than $10 in his pocket and he immediately started a new job as a door to door salesman selling storm windows and doors. In 2000, Gary created softballjunk.com, which was the first website for women’s fastpitch softball equipment. The softball videos he has edited and produced for FastPitchTV have been viewed millions of times. In November of 2004 he heard about a new technology called podcasting, and produced his first sports podcast by December of that same year. By 2006 Time Magazine included Gary’s podcasting website in their list of The 50 Coolest Websites on the Planet. Website: www.garyleland.com Twitter: @garyleland

http://www.Libsyn.com (Libsyn) has been around for a very long time…since 2004 to be exact - and has carved out it’s own massive space in the podcast industry. Hosting and delivering media files for some of the most popular and lucrative podcasts in history like https://directory.libsyn.com/shows/view/id/wtfpod (Mark Maron), https://directory.libsyn.com/shows/view/id/nerdist (The Nerdist), and Dan Carlin’s https://directory.libsyn.com/shows/view/id/dancarlinhh (Hard Core History), Libsyn is definitely the big dog in the media hosting backyard! I’ve known about Libssn for a long time. Heck, I’ve worked with the Libsyn interface for over 3 years now since about 90% of http://www.PodcastFastTrack.com/clients (my clients) are hosting their files on Libsyn. As a result, I’m currently hosting my media files in all sorts of places (you don’t want to know. But in this conversation I was so impressed with the incredible things Libsyn has to offer, I’m in the process of switching my files over to Libsyn for good. I know you’re going to be amazed by at least one thing on this episode. And I almost guarantee you that even if you already host your files on Libsyn, you’re going to learn something you didn’t know.
