Minister of Enterprise, Trade and Employment Peter Burke, T.D., has announced the annual results of the Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs) for 2024, showing that companies supported by the Local Enterprise Office Fingal created 197 net new jobs in 2024. This marks an increase from the 178 jobs created in 2023. The net jobs created by Local Enterprise Office Fingal-supported clients in 2024 was 197, which takes into account companies that amalgamated, ceased trading, and those that transferred to Enterprise Ireland. The total national figures for the Local Enterprise Offices across the country were also announced, with the LEOs now financially supporting 39,541 jobs across 7,176 companies. This represents the highest number of jobs supported by the Local Enterprise Offices since their inception in 2014. In 2024, 7,104 new jobs were created by LEO client companies, with a net job creation figure of 2,459. This represents a 7% increase nationally compared to 2023. The LEOs also continue to provide substantial funded supports to thousands of other small businesses nationwide through programs such as the Energy Efficiency Grant, Lean for Business, Green for Business, along with training and mentoring. Minister Peter Burke, T.D., said: "The 31 Local Enterprise Offices continue to be the primary anchor for economic development in communities across the country. Our LEOs ensure that every small business, regardless of location, has a support system available to them, no matter what their concern. The continued broadening of the Local Enterprise Office remit highlights the value they add to our SME community. It has never been easier for a small business to access support through their Local Enterprise Office, including companies looking to digitalise their operations, take their first steps in sustainability, or identify new markets. These areas will be key pillars going forward to ensure our small businesses can continue to compete both at home and abroad. Government is firmly committed to supporting them all the way." The Local Enterprise Offices were at the forefront of supporting small businesses across the country in 2024, helping thousands secure funding, upskill, and avail of support to become more sustainable and competitive. New supports, such as the Grow Digital Voucher and Market Explorer Grant, were also introduced to help small businesses digitalise and explore new markets. Oisín Geoghegan, Head of Enterprise at Local Enterprise Office Fingal, said: "The results announced today are a testament to Ireland's small business community. When faced with adversity, they have adapted, pivoted, upskilled, and did whatever it took to sustain themselves. The figures show that companies have seen the opportunities in the challenging trading conditions they have faced. The Local Enterprise Offices across the country have gone above and beyond in their support of small businesses, but there is renewed optimism. We are seeing new opportunities for Irish businesses, and as always, during tough economic periods, we see new ideas and companies emerge and flourish. This year will be no different, and as we continue to work closely with Enterprise Ireland and the local authorities to ensure our small businesses get the best possible support, there are certainly green shoots emerging across the country." Carol Gibbons, Head of Entrepreneurship, Regions and Local Enterprise at Enterprise Ireland, said: "2024 was a challenging year for business, and these very positive employment results are a testament to the dedication and commitment of the LEO network across the country and the ambitious businesses it supports. Key to the success of the LEO network is the close relationship it fosters with both start-up and scaling businesses across communities. It is particularly encouraging to see the breadth of new jobs created across the country and showing that if you want to start and scale a company, the supports are there to do it from anywhere in Ir...

On the evening of November 13, 1974, twenty-three-year-old Ronald DeFeo Jr. burst through the door of Henry's Bar in Amityville, Long Island, frantically yelling for help and telling the patrons that someone had killed his parents. When a small group returned to the house with DeFeo, they discovered that not only had his parents, Louise and Ronald Sr., been killed, but so had his four brothers and sisters—all shot to death in their beds with a .35 caliber rifle.During a police interview that night, investigators became suspicious of Ronald DeFeo. Not only was his story of a mob hit difficult to believe, but he seemed incapable of keeping certain aspects of his story straight during the interview. The next day, DeFeo broke down and confessed to the murders, explaining that he had hated his father and telling investigators, “Once I started [shooting], I just couldn't stop.”Ronald DeFeo's trial was one of New York's biggest news stories of 1975 and attracted considerable attention due to his attempt to mount an insanity defense and his frequent outbursts in the courtroom. In the end, the defense was unsuccessful and DeFeo was convicted of the murders and sentenced to life in prison. DeFeo's conviction should have been the end of the story, but it turned out it was only the beginning of what would eventually become one of the most notorious supernatural claims in American history.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!!ReferencesCarter, A.J., Soper Susan , Dallas Gatewood, and Sam Washington. 1974. Choosing the Right Professional Support: If you're unsure whether to seek a coach or therapist, it often depends on whether you want to heal or build. Consulting a professional can help guide that decision. After two weeks of non-stop action, the Glasgow "Super" World Championships  closed, as they began, with some stellar performances from some of the sport's biggest stars. As we head off for a super beer and a long lie down, these are RadioCycling's latest headlines...Worlds in motion... UCI president David Lappartient has hailed these Glasgow Worlds as the biggest success in the championships' history, but there are plenty of talking points in what has been an overwhelming (in all senses of the word) fortnight. We reflect on the sheer amount of racing, which has triggered admissions of burn-out among leading racers, as well as the quality of the action, which has been of the highest level right from the off.The "Remco Evenepoel to Ineos" rumours are rumbling on, fuelled by the Belgian's entourage and by a suggestion from multiple Grand Tour winner turned team owner and commentator Alberto Contador that a deal between the Belgian and the British team is "an open secret" within the peloton. Our man with his ear to the Remco rumour mill, Chris Marshall-Bell, picks over the latest reports and explains how bike manufacturer Specialized could be the deciding force in this affair.Tom Pidcock gave up his chance of going for a road race medal in order to focus on mountain biking in Scotland, and achieved his goal by finishing with a gold and bronze medal haul from his two off-road events. Both, though, were tinged with controversy, notably the UCI's late-minute reshaping of the rules regarding grid positions. We examine the issues, including the UCI's fudging of its own regulations. Among the many long-rumoured transfers that have been confirmed since August 1 was Tao Geoghegan Hart's move from Ineos to Lidl-Trek. We hear from Ineos team manager Rod Ellingworth about the Briton's departure from the squad where he's spent his entire career and why there's no hard feelings on either side. Finally, the Super Worlds is over, but there's less than a fortnight to the start of a super mountainous Vuelta a España. Weary Tadej Pogacar has said a firm ‘no' to racing, but plenty of big names will be in Barcelona for the start. We look at their final preparations and pick out the one contender who's made the Vuelta his entire focus this season as our favourite...Support the show

It's Eurovision week and while Ireland's Wild Youth fell at the first hurdle, this week's show looks at how our young footballers are beating the odds to compete on the European stage. Academy heads Mike Geoghegan (Waterford) and Craig Sexton (Bohs) drop by to discuss funding difficulties, staff shortages and the differences between Dublin and the rest of the country. Johnny Logan is on the menu at Rascals but our own Johnny is back in the virtual house with a viral Dan to discuss Galway rising, managerial clobber and the innocence of tunnel blocking teens. All with the usual undying support of Rascals Brewery, Collar and Cuff and Future Ticketing.

Thomas Geoghegan is a labor lawyer and writer whose latest book is The History of Democracy Has Yet To Be Written: How We Have to Learn to Govern All Over Again. MSNBC's Chris Hayes says of the book: "This book made me laugh out loud and also gave me glimpses of an entire horizon of possibility I hadn't seen before.” Indeed, while Tom's book examines the hopeless dysfunction of our political system (including amusingly describing his own effort to run for Congress), it's also a look at how we could make a much, much better system of government if we were committed to getting rid of the filibuster, making voting mandatory, restructuring congress, and passing the PRO Act. Even though we often assume that we stand on the cusp of an authoritarian end to democracy, we actually have within our grasp the possibility of making it far more stable and having a Congress that actually represents the people of the country. Today, Tom joins to discuss his book, telling us what it's like to run for Congress in Chicago in a freezing winter (not fun) and why democracy depends on making the labor movement flourish again."The labor movement is necessary to pull people into the political process. If it's the right kind of labor movement, it's going to have the goal of all true republican government: to help people govern themselves, to increase people's capacity to be citizens, to increase people's capacity to rule and take responsibility for all aspects of their lives." — Tom GeogheganSubscribe to Current Affairs on Patreon to unlock all of our bonus episodes and get early access to new releases.

How and why, in the latter half of the twentieth century, did informatic theories of “code” developed around cybernetics and information theory take root in research settings as varied as Palo Alto family therapy, Parisian semiotics, and new-fangled cultural theories ascendant at US liberal arts colleges? Drawing on his recently published book “Code: From Information Theory to French Theory,” and primary sources from the MIT archives, this talk explores how far-flung technocratic exercises in Asian colonies and MIT's Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE) inspired these varied and diverse audiences in a common dream of “learning to code.” The result is a new history of the ambitions behind the rise of “theory” in the US humanities, and the obscure ties of that endeavor to Progressive Era technocracy, US foundations, and the growing prestige of technology and engineering in 20th century life. Bernard Dionysius Geoghegan is a Reader in the History and Theory of Digital Media at King's College London. An overarching theme of his research is how “cultural” and “humanistic” sciences shape—and are shaped by—digital media. His attention to cultural factors in technical systems also figured in his work as a curator, notably for the Anthropocene and Technosphere projects at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. Duke University Press recently published his book Code: From Information Theory to French Theory (2023), based partly on archival research he undertook as a visiting PhD student at MIT around 2008.

You are good at so many things, but you are great at taking care of your kids and don't ever question that. Caregiver to caregiver what you are doing is hard, but you are so good at it.Raising Rare is so excited to share this episode with you. Susan Geoghegan is an amazing mom of two rare babies given the challenge in life of Mitochondrial Disease effecting the FBXL4 gene. Susan's journey into parenthood was not what she had planned, but as a business owner and wedding planner she soon learned that she was going to have to plan things in a much different way and pivoting always had to be an option. In 2016 Susan was experiencing a wonderful first pregnancy that quickly took a turn as she developed pre-eclampsia soon after starting the third trimester. As Susan was starting to stabilize they realized that her unborn daughter was crashing and needed to be brought into this world through an emergency c-section at 33 weeks. She was tiny even for a pre-mie and spent the next 77 days in the NICU. During her stay Susan and her husband were given the news that their beautiful baby had a Mitochondrial disease that effects FBXL4 gene and she was only the 31st documented case worldwide, but also that their was a 25% chance of this being passed to any future children as well. As a family it was decided very early on that those 2-5 projected years would be the best possible, and would be a life of impact. In 2019, Susan and her husband welcomed their sweet son Benji to the world, his diagnosis came much earlier as they had down genetic testing prior to birth. Lorelie passed in July of 2021 after coming down with a common headcold and a realization (and fear) of how fragile their health is as a family. Susan now experiences anticipatory grief as she sees signs in Benji of his declining and things that she recognizes happening with Lorelie that at the time they just believed was common due to her age. For Susan, therapy has helped with the grief but is an ongoing process in grounding and learning.Susan has truly taken on her promise to have Lorelie's life be one of impact and is truly giving back to other caregivers and the rare community. Not only do they raise money for current research at CHOP on FBXL4 gene, but she also started her own podcast, When Autumn Comes, and a foundation, The Apricity Hope Project. Susan's podcast has helped her connect with moms of rare kiddos but also bereaved moms as well. Both her podcast and foundation offer hope to caregivers and help shine a light for them when they are in the darkest parts of their journey. In the first 6 months as an organization, The Apricity Hope Project has sent 75 care packages (described as a package filled with items that you would expect to receive if your best friend was the one sending it), and offers hospital go bags filled with everything you might need to survive an unexpected hospital stay as well as some new and exciting projects that are just getting started.Susan would love to connect, please feel free to check out her website, podcast, or reach her by email.https://apricityhope.org/https://apricityhope.org/when-autumn-comes-podcast/hello@apricityhope.org

Bernard Dionysius Geoghegan traces the shared intellectual and political history of computer scientists, cyberneticists, anthropologists, linguists, and theorists across the humanities as they developed a communication and computational-based theory that grasped culture and society in terms of codes. In Code: From Information Theory to French Theory (Duke UP, 2023), Geoghegan reconstructs how Progressive Era technocracy as well as crises of industrial democracy and colonialism shaped early accounts of cybernetics and digital media by theorists including Norbert Wiener, Warren Weaver, Margaret Mead, Gregory Bateson, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Roman Jakobson, Jacques Lacan, Roland Barthes, and Luce Irigaray. His analysis casts light on how media-practical research forged common epistemic cause in programs that stretched from 1930s interwar computing at MIT and eugenics to the proliferation of seminars and laboratories in 1960s Paris. This mobilization ushered forth new fields of study such as structural anthropology, family therapy, and literary semiology while forming enduring intellectual affinities between the humanities and informatics. With Code, Geoghegan offers a new history of French theory and the digital humanities as transcontinental and political endeavors linking interwar colonial ethnography in Dutch Bali to French sciences in the throes of Cold War-era decolonization and modernization. Another interesting fact about John is that he's deaf. His book, Hear Today, Gone Tomorrow, tells the story of a man who, like many of us, depended on his hearing to earn a living, overcame the obstacle and continues to be an exceptional writer, researcher, and of course, family man.

Baseball and BBQ Episode #146 Features Pat Geoghegan from Save the Game and Janice Smella from SmellaQue BBQ with Guest Co-host, Doug Scheiding of Rogue Cookers Pat Geoghegan loves baseball and wants to save and grow the game.  Pat is part of a group that is dedicated to keeping baseball relevant, as it needs to have today's youth involved in playing and watching baseball.  Baseball is losing fans, and that means fewer eyes on the game.  The website for Save the Game, https://savethegameus.com/ has a petition they need you to sign which will support their argument that baseball is becoming a niche sport and changes are necessary if the game is to continue and grow.  The website provides lots of reasons and proves why baseball is losing fans and offers suggestions on how to fix it.  Pat is extremely passionate and working on assembling an impressive group of individuals with the same goal of saving the game.  Enjoy our baseball discussion and then visit their website, and together we can, hopefully, Save the Game. Janice Smella is back for part two. She loves to cook and is quite good at it.  As head cook for the SmellaQue BBQ team, three-time National Canadian BBQ Team of the Year in 2018, 2019, and 2021 she has the opportunity to indulge her passion for smoking and cooking outdoors. Her website poses the question, "So, who is Janice anyways?" The short answer is, "I'm just a gal that likes to cook." The long answer is much more than that. In addition to being a champion pitmaster, she is also an inventor of delicious recipes which can be found on https://smellaque.com/ and https://bushcooking.com/contributor/janice-smella/ She is also a television star, our words, not hers, after successful appearances on season three of Food Network's show, Fire Masters. Janice along with guest co-host, Doug Scheiding loves the science of food and hearing them talk is a unique experience, and we regret there is not more for part three.
