As a self-proclaimed “refugee” of the corporate world, Robert Finkel brings to the table decades of experience working in venture capitalism and private investment for his most recent undertaking—brew pubs. What started as a personal passion shared with colleagues to give them a taste of the craft beer experience, Robert has constructed into a successful grouping of botanical brew pubs, known as Forbidden Root, in which Robert's team of alchemists join classic ingredients to create innovative flavors. This month’s daf is sponsored by Minneapolis Hadran group in memory of the father of their organizer Shira Krebs. “Shira’s father Jerry Katz, Gershon Pinya ben Yitzchak Lev haCohen z”l, loved learning and family beyond all else. He raised three daughters and a son to be dedicated to Torah learning, And his legacy lives on not only through his family, but through our Hadran Minneapolis group as well. He passed away two weeks ago, and he will be greatly missed”.  Today's daf is sponsored by Ellen Golub in loving memory of Ruth Calish Weiss on her first yahrzeit. "Ruth was a pillar of strength to Israel and the Jewish people. She was an inspiration to daughter Debra (& Robert) Finkel, and grandchildren, Max, Hannah & Aliya.   Today’s daf is also sponsored by Mindy and Eric Hecht and family in loving memory of Mindy’s father, Dr. Charles Feldman, Yitzchak Tzvi Ben Yaakov v’Leah, on the 10th yahrzeit, which was on the second night of Chanukah. “We miss him dearly and know that he would have loved to be part of this great learning endeavor.” Today's daf is also dedicated from myself and the Hadran Zoomers to Sharon Russ on the sudden loss of her mother on Shabbat. Our thoughts are with you.  Rain on Tuesday nights and Friday nights is considered a good thing as people are generally not on the streets on those nights – why? A different version of the story of Honi the Circle Maker is brought. Another Honi story is told regarding Honi’s surprise when he saw a man planting a carob tree when the fruits will only grow after 70 years and he will not even see the fruits of his labor. Honi ends up sleeping for 70 years and awakening to seeing the grandson of the person who planted the trees enjoying the fruits. When he goes to see what happened to his family, no one recognizes him. In the Beit Midrash as well, he is unrecognizable, even though his magical powers still seem to be prevalent. He dies out of sadness. Stories are also told of Honi’s grandchildren and their role in also bringing rain. What is the difference between the strong ones of Israel and the pious ones of Babylonia? Other stories of told of Rabbi Yona and his son Rabbi Mani and the strength of their prayers.

EstoBro and TV welcome Robert Finkel, aka Dr. Thunderc*ck and DJ_DadSlam, who is a part of the podcast's fantasy football league. The Gents of the show wanted to welcome him on to wrap up Spooky Szn for Oktober; and what better way to do so for his birthday? The collective begins the show discussing the hot topic on the history that was made with the 600th touchdown pass thrown by Tom Brady, and the poor deal that was made by the fan who received the football from Mike Evans of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The cold open holds a good debate regarding memorabilia from sports to music (12:00) before going into the primary topic discussing the genre of metal (18:15) and where the music's origins derive from horror themes. EstoBro appreciates the analysis Dr. Thunderc*ck has on metal, including the history of the genre, the branching of different subgenres, and why the elements are important for Halloween. The birthday guest also wants to draw an appreciation for other horror elements (41:25), which includes horror video games that are highly addictive. While our guest wants to avoid talking about his shortcomings in fantasy sports (50:40), it does not help that the Buccaneers played against his team, the Chicago Bears. Dr. thunderc*ck shares his opinion about the Tampa sports market and why baseball is truly boring. The show wraps with the autumn edition of "Who's got the munchies?" with deciding which is better between pumpkin or apple flavor when it comes to the gathering theme of the season (63:30). Follow Dr. Thunderc*ck on his Twitch channel for DJ_DadSlam at twitch.tv/dj_dadslam and Twitter @DJ_DadSlam for more of his wild antics and hot takes!

For most of us, once we are in the working world, travel is something to do on vacation.  Academics have the opportunity to take a sabbatical and live and work in another country with their families. As the world economy continues to become more integrated, many lawyers and other business professionals end up finding themselves on international business trips.  Some in-house lawyers have the chance to spend time in other countries when they are temporarily transferred to international offices. Lawyers who work for large international law firms, also have this chance.  But for most lawyers in private practice, international travel is limited to vacations and the occasional business trip.  Robert Finkel, is a lawyer who figured out a different path. For many years, Bob had been in private practice at a mid-sized firm; but he and his wife had a strong desire to spend time living in Israel with their three children.  They had visited the country many times, but they knew living there would be different. Since they were not independently wealthy, they knew that at least one of them needed to continue to work. One option was for Bob to leave his role partner of a law firm in the Boston area, Morse, Barnes-Brown and Pendleton and find a legal job in Israel.  This presented some challenges. So Bob came up with a creative solution. He would continue to work for his firm but work remotely from Israel.  In this episode, I speak with Bob about how he made living abroad a reality and what were some of the challenges and benefits to him professionally and personally. Bob is a partner at the New York firm Moritt, Hock and Hamroff. Bob has over 30 years of experience as a tax and business lawyer. His practice focuses on the areas of individual and business taxation including tax controversy and tax litigation.

In this episode, we stepped up to the bar and ordered a couple rounds of Atomic Alcohol. The podcast collected ten examples of nuclear themed wine, cocktails, and beer with names, history, or other interesting connections to nukes. Why do breweries and wineries go to the nuclear well so many times? Could a beverage change how you think about the atom? How many drinks can the podcast team have and still sound reasonably intelligent? Tim Westmyer, Gabe, and special guests Will Saetren (@WillSaetren) and Eric Gascho (@EricGascho) answer these questions and more. BJ Pichman is the head brewer at Forbidden Root brewpub, Chicago’s “botanic beer” producer. As a homebrewer, he found a niche brewing pilot batches for recipe development consultants, and that eventually that got him a gig brewing the earliest batches of Forbidden Root’s first trials for their namesake root beer-inspired concoction designed by Randy Mosher and Robert Finkel.  Eventually that concept would develop into a full-fledged craft beer brand and brewpub, and while botanics are still at the heart of the operation, BJ has also developed a strong portfolio of hoppy beers, most recently of the New England variety. And they’re really good.  This week, he also launched his collaboration with Fernet-Branca, a bitter, herbal liquor that posed a perfect challenge for the team. The result, called Frenetic, might be the beer that finally puts this crew on the national map.
