We are all members of The October Club You can feel it coming. The days haven’t completely surrendered to fall yet. Halloween is still somewhere on the horizon. But something has changed. Spooky season has arrived. And this week on The Leal Legacy Podcast, I’m talking about the proper way to welcome it. Because and this is important you can’t just go from summer directly into full-blown Pumpkin Spice insanity overnight. There needs to be a transition. Let Fall Come to You Part of what makes this time of year so special is the anticipation. The first decorations start appearing. Horror movies work their way back into the rotation. The nights begin feeling a little different. Halloween starts creeping into stores. Then, eventually, the Pumpkin Spice can flow. But we’ve got to earn it. There’s something to be said for allowing a season to slowly take over instead of immediately sprinting toward the finish line. And while I’m talking about new seasons, there’s a pretty literal new chapter beginning for Leal Legacy as well. We Have a New Studio This is a big one. I’ve officially landed a new studio space. After years of building, recording, designing, filming, writing, experimenting and figuring out what Leal Legacy even is, having a dedicated space for the next stage of that journey feels significant. It’s another home for the weird little universe we’re continuing to build. And there will be plenty more on that as it comes together. But spooky season also has a way of pulling old stories out of the graveyard. Which brings us to New Orleans. Halloween, New Orleans and Two Bat Heads One Halloween, I found myself in New Orleans. And somewhere in the middle of everything that makes Halloween in New Orleans exactly what you’d imagine Halloween in New Orleans to be… I got tattooed. Bats, on my head. Because apparently sometimes the appropriate souvenir from a Halloween trip isn’t a T-shirt or refrigerator magnet. It’s permanent. In the episode, I tell the story behind those tattoos and revisit a Halloween memory that’s managed to become a permanent piece of my own personal mythology. And maybe that’s what The October Club really is. It’s not a real club. There are no dues. There probably aren’t meetings. It’s just that feeling shared by those of us who understand that Halloween isn’t merely one night on October 31st. It’s the buildup. The movies. The decorations. The weather. The traditions. The memories. It’s letting the season slowly creep into your life until one day you realize… October has arrived. Even when the calendar says otherwise. Listen to The October Club, the latest episode of The Leal Legacy Podcast: [LINK] Welcome to spooky season. Shop Our Store. Send us Fan MailWe sit down with Doug McLaughlin of M&O Spirits to hear how a film-and-production background turned into a grain-to-glass distillery south of Columbus. We taste through Ta-Da, Pumpkin Spice, Black, Smoke, and a cask strength pour while Doug breaks down the process choices that make his whiskey stand out. • Doug and Mike's path from basement R&D to a fully licensed Ohio craft distillery • Why M&O sticks to 55-gallon barrels and waits for real maturity • The double oaking method using custom toasted and charred staves • Long fermentation for fruit esters and a cleaner, drinkable distillate • Ta-Da white whiskey: wheat-heavy recipe, multi-run pot distillation, quick oak touch for whiskey designation • Pumpkin puree in the mash and spice satchels in the barrel for a balanced holiday finish • Black vs Smoke: same mash bill, different distillation count, different flavor profiles • Cask strength tasting notes and how proof can mean concentrated flavour • Where to buy, distillery hours, and why some cask strength bottles are distillery-only • Our July 25 tasting event plug and why “try before you buy” matters www.scotchybourbonboys.com. Make sure whether you listen to us or you watch us to become a member, subscribe, leave good feedback, all that stuff. A lot of craft bourbon talk is hype. Doug McLaughlin from M&O Spirits shows what it looks like when the hype is backed by process, patience, and a distiller who can explain every decision from mash to bottle. We're joined by Doug (calling in from Asheville, Ohio) and we taste through the lineup while he lays out how M&O went from an off-the-books R&D basement setup to a fully legal, award-winning grain-to-glass distillery. We dig into the techniques that shape the flavor: a long 20-day fermentation designed to build fruit esters, pot still runs that change the entire personality of the same mash bill, and a double oaking approach that uses custom white oak staves toasted, charred, and smothered to lock smoke into the wood. You'll hear why Black (triple distilled) lands smoother and more “classic bourbon,” while Smoke (double distilled) keeps a bigger mouthfeel with brighter fruit and built-in campfire notes that shine in an Old Fashioned. Then we get into the fun bottles: Ta-Da, a wheat-forward white whiskey that surprises people who expect “gasoline,” and a pumpkin spice spirit made with real pumpkin puree in the cook and spice satchels aging in the barrel for years so the finish feels like dessert, not a candle. We also talk cask strength, non-chill filtering, careful cuts, and how small allocations impact where you can actually buy the rare stuff. If you're near Columbus, Doug shares how to visit, tour, and taste at the distillery, plus how to catch him at the July 25 event at Mother Stewart's. Subscribe, share this with your bourbon group, and leave a review so more people can find the show and the makers behind the bottles. We never thought we would see the day when you could by canned gueuze. The purist in us shudders at the thought. How could our sacred beer become something in a can? The practical side rejoices that we can grab and go with cans of gueuze for a warm summer day in the park. No heavy bottles to carry around. Tilquin Petite Gueuze is a 4% ABV drink on the go gueuze. It's light, refreshing and gives you a quick lambic hit when you need it. On the other hand we have Dry Dock Pumpkin Spice Bligh's Barleywine. This is a strong 13% ABV surprisingly good pumpkin spice beer. We aren't huge fans of anything pumpkin spiced. It was surprising to find such a treat. We think the Heaven Hill barrel aging gave it the edge. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #gueuze #pumpkinspice #barleywine

(3:00) The challenge is to celebrate but to get back on track. And it's “Pumpkin Spice” season—the “Jaws of the Fall.” (8:00) Football season and Halloween also add to the challenge. But Anna has your back on the football food! Go to her Substack blog and find a ton of dip recipes! Get Vinnie's e-book to get started with NSNG®! (28:00) It's always a great time to review the information in it! NSNG® stands for No Sugars, No Grains—the rule is simple, and you can lose weight if you follow it. Vinnie explains how carbs and fats work in your body. (32:00) ONE OF Vinnie's favorite books by Gary Taubes, Why We Get Fat and What to Do About It is available in the book club on Amazon So what can you eat? (38:00) Eggs, meats, fish, and seafood, and a variety of non-starchy vegetables, especially cruciferous ones. Cheese and other dairy products are good; however, some people are sensitive to them. Fats: a good olive oil, butter, and coconut oil. Fermented foods are great, too. Eat until you're full. Stop and then move on. (52:00) You can't eat anything with impunity, even healthy foods. The next Monday episode will be a continuation of this NSNG® 101. You'll be able to join the NSNG® VIP group when it reopens soon! If you are interested in the NSNG® VIP group, register here! NFL is back, a behind-the-scenes of the fantasy-football skit we filmed this morning, plus Trey's one-take pumpkin-spice latte throw that somehow made views but not money. From there, it's Target therapy, dads-night-out vs. moms, and a heated matcha debate. Mid-show we dive into hot-tub temps (petition for “male vs. female” settings), whether octopuses are really that smart, and a Chihuahua ancestry rabbit hole. We wrap with Jessica Biel's new show/pull-up goals, lost AirPods & Find My horror stories, automatic headlights, and a first-date hazard-lights tale (Patreon tease).
